There is something about Essek and Molly and Caleb all supporting each other and dealing with their respective trauma that really resonates with me.

I don't really believe in monogamy, but I do believe in love. Life is so overflowing with horrible shit we can't change, that to limit ourselves when it comes to the the only good thing that has ever happened to humanity (aka: human connection) just seems stupid to me.

Some people find their greatest joy in choosing their one and only person. My Gf and I find that joy in letting people into our hearts. In sharing the bitter sweet ups and downs of love and loss and mutual healing. To see that mirrored by my favorite fucking characters. God damned. It's so cathartic.

I'm gonna gonna go cry in bed about my ginger catboy and his two purple boyfriends now. This is a gentle reminder to allow yourself to connect and be vulnerable. Because life is nothing if we refuse to live.

Alex blinks at Reggie, hands on his hips. "Did you seriously just boop me?" he asks.

"You're just so boopable!" Reggie replies, smile wide and cheesy.

"So not the time for it!" Alex says, throwing his hands up in the air and then gestures at himself. "I am a literal catboy!"

"I mean it's only ears and a tail..."

"Only ears and a tail yet!" Alex retorts back. "Thus not really the time for nose boops!"

"I mean it's always time for nose boops," Willie comments from the doorway, coming in and gently taps a finger against Alex's nose. "Boop!"

Alex hisses and bats Willie's hand away, which only makes him smirk and repeat the gesture on Reggie who lets out a playful giggle. Then turns back to Alex. "Now, do you want to know what I found or are you gonna continue to be all catty about the situation?"

"Not. Funny."

Reggie smother a laugh into his hand but then adopts an expression that's all innocence when Alex's glare lands on him. Willie keeps smiling through it all and pulls a large and dusty tome from his bag. "Had to practically smother this out from under Caleb's nose. Whoever cursed you was wicked mad, this is some serious joojoo."

"And you're sure it wasn't Caleb?" Alex asks.

"Look, Caleb is an asshole of a guardian, but he likes you and Reg, he wouldn't do this. Plus he told me once when he was very drunk that he spent some time as a duck, he wouldn't infect anyone with a similar fate."

Reggie snorted a little. "Caleb Duckington... wonder if they make capes and top hats that small."

"They totally do," Willie replied. "Clementine got photos, and she gave them to me to avoid getting fired. I'll show you once we fix our boyfriend."

"And maybe reverse it onto whoever did this," Alex retorted.

"No way man, I am not messing with revenge spells. The counter curse is bad enough," Willie said. "You have to be a mega powerful mage to pull something like that off and I'm middling at best."

"It's not gonna involve blood is it?" Reggie asked. "Because you know I don't do blood."

Willie opened the book and skimmed the spell once more. "No blood or any other bodily fluids required, no. But we might need a few candles."

"How many is a few?' Alex asked, remembering the time his boyfriends attempted romance and instead got the fire brigade involved.

"Seven," Willie replied. "Plus some chalk."

"There goes the security deposit," Reggie remarked.

"I think the sacrifice will be worth it since I am not a big fan of the whole tail thing," Alex snarked. "And if either of you even think of touching it..."

"So pets are out of the question?" Reggie asked with a forlorn expression.

"Just do the damn spell already before I get fleas," Alex replied.

"Sure thing hot dog," Willie said, but then booped Alex's nose once more. "Sorry, couldn't resist."

Thankfully the countercurse worked, and Alex was fully human once more. Though he did wonder at his lingering reaction to the catnip that clung to Reggie's clothes after he got back from the shelter, and the way he melted when Willie scratches behind his ear.

It's probably nothing... right?

"Get away fron Daddy Andre, you nasty bEAST!1!1!!!!2" yells the Catboy, including somehow yelling the exclamation points and numbers.

"Not until he trims me and braids me into his own hair!!!!" Yells the asshair.

Profoundly disturbed, Andre locks the window and pulls the drapes closed, then quickly does the same with the others, so the sitting room is cloaked in darkness. As much as he hates the cat-man-thing, he admittedly hopes it will win against the clump of butt hair - he wishes he had burned it in the fireplace while he had the chance!

Peggy finishes stoking the fire. "Who is Caleb?"

"Some rebel conspirator, no doubt," Andre says grimly. One with an apparently ungodly hairy backside. "Perhaps I should pass his name on to Captain Simcoe..."

i read the lavender bush by @canyon-wizard and then wrote the bulk of this in two days. they’re not really related fics but specific pain points held my attention. i’m very thankful for the attention this fic has gotten, it really surprised me but i’m glad people like it!
