The Church Moving Forward: Teach The Faith And Aid The Oppressed
Fr Jimenez is a priest of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, and before that taught science and math at Havenscourt Middle School and later at Castlemont High School in Oakland Unified School District
From his experience in parish life and the life of families in public schools, his advice for those who live with doubt and discouragement about any good happening in the world or difficulty in trusting people is to focus on The Church's vital mission, to celebrate mass provide the sacraments to those in need, instead of turning the mass and the sacraments into a political statement or a means to power or as a vanity project.
Second, is to pass the faith on of The Apostles, the light of truth to help guide people in their lives, rather than politically edit what the Faith teaches. The Church must change the world, not let the world change The Church
Finally, we must keep focus coming to the aid of those most in need

Betty Reid Soskin (Charbonnet; born September 22, 1921) is a retired ranger with the National Park Service, previously assigned to the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California. Until her retirement on March 31, 2022, at age 100, she was the oldest National Park Ranger serving. In February 2018, she released a memoir, Sign My Name to Freedom. She spent her early childhood living in New Orleans until a hurricane and flood destroyed her family's home and business in 1927 when her family then relocated to Oakland. She graduated from Castlemont High School. During WWII she worked as a file clerk for Boilermakers Union A-36, an all-black union auxiliary. Her main job was filing change of address cards for the workers, who moved frequently. In June 1945, she and her then-husband, Mel Reid, founded Reid's Records in Berkeley, a small black-owned business specializing in Gospel music. They moved to Walnut Creek in the 1950s, where their children attended better public schools and an alternative private elementary and middle school. The family encountered considerable racism, and she and her husband were subject to death threats after they built a home in the white suburb. She took over management of the music store, which led to her becoming active in area civic matters and a prominent community activist. Reid's Records closed on October 19, 2019. She served as a field representative for California State Assemblywomen Dion Aroner and Loni Hancock, and in those positions became actively involved in the early planning stages and development of a park to memorialize the role of women on the Home Front during WWII. Those efforts came to fruition when Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park was established in 2000, to provide a site where future generations could remember the contributions women made to the war effort. In celebration of her 100th birthday the West Contra Costa Unified School District renamed Juan Crespi Middle School to Betty Reid Soskin Middle School. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CizoSX4rIoO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

How To Help The Mentally Ill: Look To Jesus Healing The Leper
The priest, teacher, and chaplain at the Archdiocese of San Francisco, California, father john Jimenez, graduated with a bachelor of arts in social work from San Francisco University, and taught at Castlemont High School in Oakland
In chapter 2 of the Gospel of Mark we see Jesus manifest a sign of the kingdom of God in the healing of a leper living on the fringe of town, in the isolation of a desert
In those days, lepers had to live apart from everyone else because the disease could easily spread upon touch or presence. Yet, Jesus seeks this person out. Today, many who are homeless in our society are also mentally ill. Perhaps they once had a good job, even a family. Then, a nervous breakdown trying to live up to a fast paced society, or live up to an image or peer pressure on social media, or propagandized to use marijuana and succumbing to it's addictive contents, and gateway to smoking heroin, and now recently, fentanyl
Maybe they were depressed, victimized by abuse growing up in a culture of sexual dysfunction, or perhaps hurt by a profound infidelity, which objectification often leads to, and now living with a deep sense of lack of self-worth.. Instability, lack of trust, become schizophrenia and inability to connect or find direction or meaning, lost in a sea of cultural and familial breakdown. How do we treat those whose behaviors say, "I'm unclean! I'm unclean!"?
Years ago when I was chaplain at SF General Hospital, I met an elderly man in the psych unit named Bill. For years he lived on the street, sleeping in doorways, living on handouts. It was hard to say if his mental illness was just from the instability of living on the streets, or some other trauma, being on the front lines during the Korean War, bombs going off, the constant tension of always being on alert for attacks, the horror of seeing your friend step on a land mine and explode in front of your eyes.
After all he had been through, it was amazing to see the effect of a stable, caring environment that the psychiatric unit had on him. Here he did not have to fend for himself against attacks, past or present, here he had people who listened and were interested in him, here his own religious upbringing of prayers and devotion could awaken again and bring him back to a relation with God and our bond with the good God has created.
For those who are displaced by our high tech society, here is a way to work instead for the Kingdom of God
