LA ABADESA (2024)
Synopsis
In the 9th century, Emma of Barcelona (c. 880-942), a 17-year-old girl, is named abbess in order to repopulate and Christianize border territories in 897. Upon arriving at the abbey, she will have to overcome the mistrust aroused by a woman determined to fulfill her mission, which will lead her to confront nobles, like her brother Count Guifré II Borrel of Barcelona (874-911), peasants and the nuns themselves. Despite everything, Emma will show that it is possible to challenge established power structures. Although she will pay a high price to get it...
Emma is willing to carry out the commission of her deceased noble father, Count Guifré I of Barcelona, Guifré el Pilós (840-897), founder of the House of Barcelona: convert the abbey that he founded in 885, the Monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses, for which she is now responsible into the engine of change and transformation of a society that comes down. She must help with all her resources to help the lands that are emptied due to hunger caused by border wars, which in turn are a consequence of the ambitions of the feudal lords of the area.
Emma acquired small or large properties with which the monastery came to have a territory equivalent to that of a county. Her sovereignty was also similar to that of a countess: by concession from her father, her domains were exempt from all interference from the neighboring counts, whom she knew how to oppose with resistance.
On cinemas: Friday 22 March
Filming began in January 2023 at the Loarre Castle, and included scenes filmed at the Turó de la Seu Vella, until concluding at the end of February 2023.

Loarre
First a bit about the rooster here at the campground. I’m not sure if it thinks it’s a dog and it cock-a-doodle-doos instead of barking or what is going on with it, but it’s crowing endlessly. Thankfully it’s not unpleasant.
This morning we did the walk up to and around the castle. It really is stunning (sorry about all the photos) and incredibly intact given it was first built in the early 1100s. You can see why it’s been used in movies.
Not quite as hot today but still warm enough that a shandy was in order once we got back to the campground. This was followed by a quick dip and lunch.
We chilled a bit this afternoon before head into Loarre town. We did notice as we were leaving that the sky behind us was looking pretty black. Anyway Loarre is a lovely little village with heaps of history and the church was really lovely. Mind you I nearly jumped out of my skin when the bells tolled as we were in the bell tower. I was only relieved we were in the stairwell and not on the platform with the bells as we had been moments before 😳
We had planned on having a drink in Loarre but the wind picked up rather dramatically and while we had prepared for rain in our short absence, wind was another thing. So we headed straight back and gathered up all our belongings as they were asunder and brought in the awning.
Battened down we headed to the bar for a g&t. The storm never really hit us. It pretended to rain and we had lots of thunder and wind but by 8:30pm it was pretty much over. By this time we’d showered and had nibbles and dinner in Tessi, very snug.
We did venture back out to enjoy the last of the evening and another lovely sunset.

@asongofstarkandtargaryen Do you remember the film La abadesa, the one I told you some months ago that was looking for its cast? Well, I got good news:
Antonio Chavarrías finalizes the filming of 'La abadesa' in the castle of Loarre.
The film will hit theaters in the fall of 2023. During the fall, the production company held numerous casting sessions in Huesca and Zaragoza to find several of the leading actors and extras. The director Antonio Chavarrías finalizes the filming of 'La abadesa' at the Loarre castle, where the team has been working for several weeks in January and February. The Romanesque fortress of La Hoya de Huesca has once again become the setting for a film set in medieval times as it is a unique location due to its beauty and history, according to the producer. Ridley Scott filmed 'Kingdom of Heaven' at this monument and, more recently, Paul Urkijo chose it for 'Irati', about to be released.
In the film, Chavarrías explores the most human and personal side of a historical character, Emma (Daniela Brown), a young abbess who decides to assume her power to face a patriarchal and dominant world in a society that relegated women to a role socially secondary and without content. The plot takes place in "a dark and violent time". A 17-year-old girl is named abbess and is commissioned to repopulate and Christianize border territories and those at war with Islam.
It stars Daniela Brown, known for her work in series like 'Días Mejores' or 'Com si fos ahir'. She is accompanied in the cast by Blanca Romero ('After', 'Bajo Sospecha', 'Bienvenidos al Edén', 'Física o Química'), Carlos Cuevas ('Merlí', 'Historias para no dormir', 'Smiley'), Ernest Villegas ('La luz más oscura', 'La Caza') and Oriol Genís ('Todos mienten', 'De la ley a la ley').
'La abadesa' is produced by Oberon Media (Mónica Lozano and Antonio Chavarrías), Wanda Visión (Miguel and José María Morales), Saga Films (Hubert Toint. Belgium) and Icono 2020 AIE. It has the participation of RTVE, TV3 and Aragón TV. The film will hit theaters in the fall of 2023 by Wanda Visión. Film Factory will handle international sales of the film. Likewise, the Aragón Film Commission, the Provincial Council of Huesca-Tourism of Huesca and the City Council of the Huesca capital have collaborated.
According to its director, 'La abadesa' is "a story that brings us closer to an almost unknown era, very hard and full of contradictions, to focus on the confrontation of three different, complex and antagonistic female worlds, that of Emma, Eloísa and Clara, only united by their status as women in a world that denies them any of their rights."
Antonio Chavarrías, born in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona), is a screenwriter, director and producer of films such as 'El Elegido', from 2016 (world premiere on Netflix), 'Dictado', from 2012 (Berlin FilmFestival - Official Section) ; 'Las vidas de Celia ', 2006 (San Sebastián Festival - Official Selection); 'Volverás', 2002 (Best Director and Special Mention at the Mar del Plata Festival; Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Photography at the Ariel Awards) 'Susanna'; 1996 (Karlovy Vary Film Festival).
