Interviewer:  What’s the most fun that you’ve had on the set?  Cassidy Freeman:   You know it’s funny, I think that staff fighting scene went from the most fun to the most painful in a matter of the seven or eight hours it took to film.  [laughs]  So that’s a strange dichotomy for that scene.   But I love fighting, I love being physical during a scene because it allows you to not really think about what you’re saying too much.  It’s easy when you’re just standing there in a business suit to think too much, so when you’re being physical it’s really fun.  I love to get in there and do it. I do have a stunt double.  It’s mainly for the stuff where I get thrown or where my body may actually get hurt, because they can’t really afford to have Tess in a cast, it’s a difficult to write into the script.   Maybe one line about how I broke my arm or something.  But all the fighting stuff I do, Justin and I both did completely ourselves, which is fun.  It takes a lot of work, it takes rehearsal.  We had to work together a long time off screen to be able to have that fluidity with each other in the fight. Oliver always touches Tess with a gentle and protective affection. She’s very aware of this and it allows her to feel safe with him - even when she doesn’t want to admit it. 

With everyone else in Smallville, Tess had to maintain her stoic, controlled, authoritarian persona to feel safe, but not with Oliver.

On the island, the way Oliver’s hands softly brush against hers as he unclasps Megan’s bracelet, or the way he runs his fingers through her hair when he pulls out her scrunchy and looks into her eyes oh so romantically, he instills a feeling of trust within her that goes deeper than any other betrayal that may be unresolved between them.

“I think that Tess and Oliver have a lot of history. I think that they know each other very well, and it kind of mirrors reality. I didn’t know anyone else on this set and Tess didn’t know anyone else either before, so it lends some history between the two of us.“ –Cassidy Freeman

Tess knows Oliver would never use his physical strength against her and that he would never, ever threaten her.  Tess has given him chances and reason to retaliate against her with force, she threw KNIVES at him for god’s sake, lol, but for Oliver, hurting her, or even threatening her with violence is NOT an option. I truly don’t think it even goes through his MIND as an option.  And you gotta admit, she pushes him pretty far during their fights!  ;)

Oliver welcomes Tess to run a little bit freer. He enjoys annoying her and pushing her buttons whenever possible. So if she wants to throw vases and bo-staffs at him, so be it. He understands her powerful energy and doesn’t try to tame it.

This also contributes their sexual attraction.  It’s easy for her to fall into his arms (at least when she forgets she’s mad at him), the way she did in Committed.  She feels freer to express her passion with him.  

Security isn’t boring to Tess, it’s liberating.  And Oliver makes her feel safe. He sets her on fire and inside her heart, she knows that she’s cherished whenever he’s touching her.

Even in Checkmate when he is completely shutting her down, he’s also running his thumb gently back and forth over her hand.  Even at his angriest, his touch remains loving.

And when Oliver sees Parasite and Livewire attacking Tess, he can’t bear to see her hurt and stops at nothing to rescue her from danger.

Their relationship may be filled with unresolved passion, longing, and feelings they continue to deny, but the soft, respectful way he always touches her remains one of the most romantic things about Tess & Oliver.
