HBO Max has released the first image from its upcoming special “Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts,” which is premiering on Jan. 1 — and it shows stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in conversation in the Gryffindor common room. The program was taped at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.
The reunion will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the eight-movie series that began with “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” which was released in November 2001. “The retrospective special will tell an enchanting making-of story through all-new in-depth interviews and cast conversations, inviting fans on a magical first-person journey through one of the most beloved film franchises of all time,” reads its logline.
All eight “Harry Potter” movies are currently streaming on HBO Max.
“Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts” will feature talent from the movies, including — according to the press release — Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Tom Felton, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Mark Williams, Bonnie Wright, Alfred Enoch, Matthew Lewis and Evanna Lynch.
J.K. Rowling, the author of the iconic book series, will not be interviewed in the special, but will be shown in archival footage about the movies. Because of her anti-trans comments, which have been condemned by the core cast — Rowling has become a figure of instant, and seemingly permanent, controversy in the passionate and vast “Harry Potter” fandom.
Earlier this week, HBO Max released a short trailer that didn’t include Radcliffe, Watson or Grint, but teased other alumni — like Coltrane (Hagrid) and Lewis (Neville Longbottom) — receiving their invitations to attend the reunion.
“Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts” is produced by Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Warner Horizon at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London — The Making of Harry Potter. The special is executive produced by Casey Patterson of Casey Patterson Entertainment (which was behind “A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote”) and Pulse Films (“Beastie Boys Story”).

Anthem’s summer reading list – everything you need to know about the latest magazines on the block
Tumblr media
This year saw drastic shifts in New Zealand’s ever-changing media landscape. As we endured lockdowns, we also faced months of uncertainty about the future of our most loved magazines, many of which have entertained and educated us for decades. With previously owned Bauer Media titles back on the shelves, as well as brand new titles, we can breathe a sigh of relief this crucial touchpoint of our culture and identity has new life.
To keep up to date with who’s who and what’s changed in the media landscape at the end of this tumultuous year, we’ve put together our summer reading list with our top reading recommendations for the festive season.
VIVA
VIVA magazine celebrates New Zealand’s ‘good things in life’, from fashion and beauty to food, design and travel. There was something special about leafing through Issue 01 shortly after the magazine took a leap from a weekly New Zealand Herald supplement to a full-glossy quarterly magazine in its own right. The first quarterly instalment, explains editor Amanda Linnell, is about Celebrating Aotearoa Now by reflecting on how 2020 has been a year that has “pushed us all to explore where we’ve come from, and discuss where we want to go”. As such, the content and characters that feature give the magazine a fiercely inclusive feel, with many wahine toa gracing the pages with their individual stories of creativity, ancestry and identity. A must read is Emma Espiner’s feature, an essay titled ‘Looking backwards to the future’, in which she reflects on how her Radio New Zealand journalist husband Guyon Espier was an unlikely modern champion bringing the te reo language to mainstream airwaves, despite initial reluctance from old fashioned or change-fearing listeners. VIVA is the perfect magazine for life-style enthusiasts, foodies and fashion lovers with a big skew towards women through the content’s deliberate inclusivity drive. The publication offers a voice for those who are champions for diversity and inclusion with reputable leaders who have compelling stories to tell - including food, beverage, fashion and FMCG clients.
Ensemble
Ensemble is an online magazine providing fashion and lifestyle news with a strong insider’s perspective. This insight comes directly from its industry heavyweights’ founders, former FQ Editor Zoe Walker Ahwa and industry face, Rebecca Wadey (ex-Kate Sylvester, Jo Malone London and MAC). Their byline is ‘for both intelligence and whimsy’ – a perfect escape in a Covid-landscape. Ensemble’s four content pillars are culture, fashion, beauty and people – writing content for a high-socioeconomic audience who are concerned with conscious consumption, the business of fashion, style trends and industry related issues. The magazine’s investigative journalism is Melanie Reid-esque in terms of quality and often provided anonymously from scrupulous sources. It balances the content nicely with light reads and trend reports.
Woman
Woman is an online and print magazine targeted at women 30 plus with articles on the latest in celebrity news, entertainment, local events and Kiwi women who stand out in their field of expertise. Published by Sido Kitchin’s School Road publishing, the magazine has a little bit of everything - from fashion, gardening, cooking, market appeal, beauty, art, home, wellbeing and book reviews. The features highlight inspiring stories of women who have achieved big things, including political editors Jessica Mutch McKay, Jane Patterson and Tova O’Brien who dive into their experience on the campaign trail during this year’s election.
Haven
Haven is New Zealand’s newest home and living magazine aimed at owners and renovating enthusiasts. The monthly magazine provides design advice, decorating inspiration and gardening tips, as well as showcasing local home, homemakers, food ideas and homeware trends. Haven’s content pillars are:
-          Edit – homeware trends and style influencers
-          Live – Kiwi homes that cross styles, locations and living situations
-          Transform – style ideas and advice for room makeovers
-          Grow – green spaces
-          Eat – recipes from Nici Wickes
The magazine targets everyday New Zealanders, rather than only featuring high end, lifestyle properties. It also profiles the interesting Kiwis who occupy the homes too, rather than just being homes focused.
SCOUT
Scout is a monthly, glossy magazine that pays homage to Aotearoa, New Zealand and the beauty we have on offer for Kiwis and, when our borders open, international visitors. We enjoyed learning about places through the eyes of a range of contributing writers, from Stan Walker on his home city  Tauranga, and Peta Mathias on Tairua. We also enjoyed reading about places we have been meaning to visit but never have, such as Tiritiri Matangi in Hauraki Gulf. The images are beautiful, and very authentic and true to life, rather than a polished tourism façade. The target market would be the domestic tourist or Kiwis wishing to explore their backyard. It appears to be a magazine for a wide demographic, that is not too high brow or elite, and accessible and relevant for many.
Thrive
Thrive, another magazine brought-to-market by School Road Publishing, is focused on all things health and wellbeing. Editor Wendyl Nissen has 20 years’ experience writing about wellness and vouched in the first edition that all content included in this magazine is “authentic and science based.” Each issue includes 3-4 long-form articles, ranging from day-in-the-life pieces that profile well-known Kiwis, to how to maintain DIY health and wellbeing practices from home. It’s relevant to anyone wanting to pay more attention to mindful living and comes full of tangible suggestions you can implement in your day-to-day life.
Tumblr media
North & South
This long form current affairs magazine is back. The monthly is targeted at informed Kiwis aged 35–64 who are “endlessly curious about the country they call home.” Using a blend of investigative journalism, essays, profiles and reviews, the magazine explores everything that is complex and fascinating about New Zealand. The first issue since the magazine came back into publication under its new independent ownership asks, “are we better off on our own” in this ambiguous Covid era? A must-read is Damian Cristie’s feature “Closed” that explores everything that is at stake as we considering when, and how, we can re-open our borders. Donna Chisholm also writes a fascinating piece about how scientists at the Centre for Brain Research are studying tiny pieces of brain tissue to find treatments for Alzheimer’s, autism, epilepsy and other neurological conditions.
Metro
Metro has relaunched under new independent local ownership. The revamp sees it become a quarterly (formerly bi-monthly) magazine, with bigger issues featuring the best of New Zealand. Online, Metro plans to develop several digital platforms to give Aucklanders insider knowledge of their city. It’s great to see proper long form features back. The features were all well written and highly relevant to the narrative of the last few months and beautifully designed. It’s still the best food section in any New Zealand publication. We also love that Alex Casey is a columnist, it’s a perfect fit for Metro. There is so much content in here, it’s the type of magazine that will live well on your coffee table to keep coming back to.
Fashion Quarterly
FQ sees a welcome return for New Zealand’s style conscious. The magazine is aimed at women aged between 20-49 with content including shopping guides, new trends and style inspiration. The features dive into local breakthrough designers, sustainable fashion, conscious consumption, at-home skincare and self-improvement. The December issue arrives months after its publication came to an abrupt halt in March, with a clear re-focus on inclusivity and commenting on social and environmental issues readers care most about. Jacinta Fitzgerald’s essay “Where to from here?” is an interesting exploration of fashion’s most unforeseeable year and the future for sustainability in an industry that has an unsustainable track record.
Capsule
They say times of adversity provide opportunity, and Capsule is a prime example of this in action. Following the closure of Bauer Media NZ in April, Kelly Bertrand, former Deputy Editor of New Zealand Woman's Weekly, joined forces with a group of other former magazine editors to launch Capsule, an online curated collection of smart stories and relatable rants. Capsule is aimed at savvy, strong, intelligent and stylish Kiwi women who want to know what’s happening, what’s trending, what’s new, and what’s worth talking about. Capsule aims to deliver clever content that resonates and connects deeply with Kiwi women and helps them feel successful, informed and entertained. The range and volume of content that Capsule covers means there’s something for everyone and every mood – you could be reading a Samsung vacuum cleaner review one moment, then learning about creating workplace opportunities for young Kiwis living with disabilities the next. Having just signed on a content partnership with Stuff, we can expect to see a lot more of Capsule in the near future – and we can’t wait.
Tumblr media
Woman’s Day NZ and The New Zealand Woman’s Weekly
After a hiatus following Bauer Media’s collapse, Woman’s Day and NZ Woman’s Weekly are back in full force to serve celebrity gossip and royal family scandal. The weekly print publications are primarily aimed at women aged 35 to 60 and in addition to reporting on the latest Hollywood red carpet faux pas, they deliver gripping real-life reads, affordable fashion, easy nutritious meals, quick beauty tips, entertaining puzzles and more. Overall, these publications provide entertainment and escapism – perfect beach reading material.

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts
Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Return to Hogwarts
It’s been 20 years since tweens, teens, and young adults first got through to Platform 9 3/4. Yes, it’s that long since the first installment of the film franchise enchanted a generation, which is still waiting for owls to deliver their acceptance letters. Two decades following the release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and a decade after the release of the last film of the franchise Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, relive the magic of Hogwarts with its most beloved characters in Casey Patterson’s 2-hour special!

Catch juicy deets like Watson crushing hard on Tom Felton (Lucius Malfoy) and production shenanigans revealed for the first time that will amaze Potterheads and casual streamers alike!
Peacemaker
Peacemaker
Superheroes are relied on to keep the peace. For DC’s Peacemaker who takes his job so seriously, he is not averse to using force to achieve it.
A spin-off of The Suicide Squad (2021), Peacemaker follows the titular “super”hero (John Cena) recovering after the near-fatal gunshot wound he suffered at the end of the film. Proving that fighting for peace is a mission that’s never done, Peacemaker brushes off his injuries and takes on a new project with a new team of misfits including Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), and Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji). Also in the cast are Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, and the great Viola Davis in a cameo as the terrifyingly comic-accurate Amanda Waller.
Euphoria Season 2
Euphoria Season 2
When Euphoria dropped in 2019, it easily became a smash hit. It tackled the very present issues of drug abuse, sex, and trauma plaguing today’s youth starring a talented cast led by Zendaya — all while serving up eye-catching fashion. The first season ended on a cliffhanger that detailed the complications of drug dependence. It showed how getting clean is very much an uphill battle, as Rue (Zendaya) relapsed after separating from girlfriend Jules (Hunter Schafer).
Euphoria Season 2 zooms in on this: How everyone is dealing with their own traumas and problems. Incredibly gripping arcs and binge-worthy episodes ahead!
Batman: The Long Halloween Part One
Batman: The Long Halloween Part One
It’s Halloween in the crime-riddled city of Gotham. Vigilante superhero Batman is in pursuit of a serial murderer with a penchant for, well, killing during holidays!
In the first part of this animated series based on DC Comics’ 1996 limited, Jeph Loeb-penned series of the same name, Batman (voiced by Jensen Ackles) finds company in police officer James Gordon (Billy Burke), district attorney Harvey Dent (Josh Duhamel), and Catwoman (the late Naya Rivera’s last role before her passing in July 2020). In hunting for the killer, Batman discovers how everything is connected all while confronting his own ghosts.
Directed by Chris Palmer, the 42nd film of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies is set in the same timeline as Superman: Man of Tomorrow and Justice Society: World War II.
The Gilded Age
The Gilded Age
It’s the 1880s and the Big Apple is bustling — from old money, families lording over society to the nouveau riche keen to muscle in by building palatial mansions across Manhattan. Then there are the poor immigrants, people of color, all of whom are trying to survive and maybe climb up the social ladder if luck would have it.
Thus sets the stage of The Gilded Age, Julian Fellowes’ love letter to old America. Starring Christine Baranski as society matron Agnes van Rhijn head to head with Carrie Coon as the wife of a robber baron, Bertha Russel, the series lets you into a New York long gone. Epic. Dramatic.
Raised by Wolves Season 2
Raised by Wolves Season 2
In the first season of Raised by Wolves, viewers were treated to otherworldly imagery of the planet Kepler-22b — where androids (played by Amanda Collin and Abubakar Salim) raised human children following the Earth’s destruction. The children grew up as atheists, only for a colony of religious human survivors landing on their planet to spark conflict.
The first season ended with more questions than answers as the simple premise felt like the tip of an iceberg, where everything might just be connected. Off of an Emmy nomination, the second season now seeks to unravel the mysteries of this sci-fi masterpiece by showrunner Aaron Guzikowski and Ridley Scott (executive producer-director).
Catch all of these and more only on HBO GO — by availing the HBO GO 4-month pass powered by PLDT Home! The HBO GO 4-month pass promo is open to all PLDT Home Fiber & DSL Subscribers. To avail of the HBO GO 4-month pass promo, visit pldthome.com/hbogo.

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN.
It was late afternoon in the early spring of 2012. I was following a large entourage as they navigated their way through the bowels of the Lexington Avenue Armory on the east side of Manhattan. We were escorting a legendary performer to a specially designed room backstage that had been constructed with one purpose in mind: That it be fit for a Queen. I had been part of similar celebrity entourages many times over the years, but I had never been as nervous as I was that day. Like a love struck school boy about to meet his crush, I anxiously followed the crowd.
Throughout my career I was fortunate to havemet some of the world’s most famous people. Presidents, rock superstars, heavyweight champs, and Academy Award winners. But this was different, I was about to meet my very favorite artist.
Aretha Franklin had been rehearsing for her appearance on the TV Land Awards where she would be honored the following night. Getting her there was no small feat. Executive Producer Casey Patterson had been trying to get her for years, but Aretha is a famously tough to book for anything. She travels only by bus, had been experiencing some recent health issues, and is notoriously…um….“prickly”.
So I follow this group, consisting of Aretha’s handlers, TV Land staffers, and production crew as they made their way to a lovely makeshift salon. It had been meticulously decorated by Casey and her team. There was beautiful fruit and flowers all about, and some lavish gifts carefully chosen for the living legend in our midst.
I was only part of all this because I was then President of The Viacom Entertainment Group. But on that day, I was there as unabashed Aretha Franklin fanboy. I arrived that afternoon with a canvas Amoeba Records tote bag stuffed with my favorite Aretha vinyl and a sharpie. I looked like someone who stands outside a Broadway theater late into the night, waiting for the star to come out and sign their program. In other words, VERY professional.
Aretha sat down on a lush velvet couch, scented candles burning all around while Casey presented her with those extravagant gifts. We all watched as she opened them with the glum boredom only a true diva could muster. As she finished, Casey introduced me. “Aretha, I’d like you to meet my boss Doug Herzog….blah..blah…blah”. She looked up and eyed me suspiciously with cocked eyebrows. She could care less. I immediately began gushing, telling her what a big fan I was. And then I sheepishly asked her if she wouldn’t mind signing some albums? The look on her face told me she was neither amused or flattered. But quickly, and with a deep sigh and some resignation, she took my vinyl and started to sign. An uncomfortable quiet fell over the room as we all just stood around and watched her do this. I hate dead space moments like that and always feel compelled to break the ice. So impulsively, I decide to double down, and blurt out… “Hey Aretha, can I give you a kiss on the cheek?” I’m not entirely sure what I was thinking, and that awkward quiet turned instantly to an icy, stone cold silence. Time seemed to stand still, everything froze, and all the air left the room. Casey was so mortified she might pass out (If you want a truly accurate account, you should track her down).
And then “The Queen Of Soul”, global music superstar, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, and “Diva of all Diva’s” glances up and shoots me a look that could kill. Maybe it was pity, maybe she just wanted to get the hell out of there, maybe she was just being a benevolent queen granting one of her loyal subjects their greatest wish, but for whatever reason, she kind of rolled her eyes and nodded yes. I heard several deep breaths as I leaned in and got my peck on the cheek.
I think she may have even smiled. At least that’s what I tell myself. In retrospect, I suppose I should have just knelt and kissed her hand like they do on “The Crown”. I had humiliated and humbled myself, but it was all worth it. She’s Aretha Franklin for crissake. I have been a fan for as long as I can remember.
I knew all the hits growing up. I have written often about how my mother turned me on to so much great music. Aretha was her favorite and soon became mine as well. It was albums like “Young, Gifted, and Black” and “Live At The Fillmore” from the dawn of the seventies where I heard mom wearing the grooves out.
I started to get deeply interested in her music digging back through her amazing Atlantic catalogue. I became obsessed not only with her, but the legendary producers and musicians who helped make all those early recordings. Unfortunately I never got to see her perform live during her heyday. Those early records with their soaring, soulful performances still give me chills. I get a thrill when I listen to them to this day.
Much has been written about her amazing voice, but as an amateur music blogger I don’t feel qualified to explain it. I’m sure it’s something you can understand better by merely listening. Gospel, soul, jazz, or pop, Aretha is arguably one of the the great vocalists in popular music history. More than just The Queen of Soul, she is one of the greatest singers of this, or any generation. She sang about sin and salvation. Equal parts Saturday night and Sunday morning. embracing the blues and the night life on one tune and finding a spirit in the dark on the next. She might take you to the dark end of the street, or get lost in a daydream. Aretha could take one of Otis Redding’s signature songs and instantly make it all her own, or hijack a Simon and Garfunkel hit and take it to church. She demanded respect, made you think, reminded you she was a natural woman, yet still needed a do right man. She sang as passionately about the struggles that divided our country, as she did affairs of the heart, serenading you with soul and her amazing grace. A one of a kind voice and artist, that has never been equaled.
This is a heartbreaking and crushing loss for anyone who loves music. Over the years I was able to see her perform many times. The performances were generally uneven, and often downright disappointing. Her post Atlantic career on Clive Davis’s Arista as a full blown diva, was not for me. But I always had those glorious early recordings (and now Youtube) to go back to (not to mention the memory of that stolen kiss on the cheek).
In a beautiful song written by her sister Carolyn, Aretha sang of trying to find an angel to set her free.
Today the angels came for Aretha.

LND Post 2 of 3
For this post, my aim is to give a play-by-play of the "highlights" of the production, as nearly as I can remember. I've been ridiculously overthinking how to write about such a widely-despised (with plenty of good reason) show, so I'm endeavouring to forget all of that and just describe the experience like one would about any other show. I went in expecting more or less a carbon copy of the revamped Australian production that was filmed and released on DVD a few years ago. Little did I know it had been revamped yet again for the Hamburg production! So, a mixture of those two is what we're getting in the US Tour, and I must say it works. There are still significant areas of weakness, ones that have been present from the beginning and, quite frankly, there's little left that can be done about it. This will be long, and there will be spoilers for the two people on earth who don't already know the entire plot.
With that in mind...
Act I
Prologue
"'Til I Hear You Sing"
I don't know that I'll ever grow used to this song being the first in the show. However, it's certainly better than Mme Giry wandering around Deserted Phantasma and Fleck's cheesy transition into the main narrative: "Remember how it was? Remember??? (HINT HINT The rest of the show will be a Flashback, I hope you understand clearly now, I CLEARLY said the keywords Was and Remember!)." Still, having spent eight years being used to Ramin's rendition, it's difficult hearing anyone Not-Ramin perform this song right off the bat, before spending the whole show growing accustomed to their voice. Still, Gardar Thor Cortes was wonderful.
Scene 1: Coney Island 1907
"The Coney Island Waltz"
The Trio (Fleck, Squelch, Gangle) were phenomenal throughout - voices, faces, goofy antics, everything. Their tight harmonies on the eerie-sounding trio-bits...YES. Apart from the few lines sung by the Trio, this scene remains mainly instrumental. And it's where The Set is first revealed in all its monstrous, shiny, spectacular spectacle. I can't remember exactly at what point in the music this happens, but the stage suddenly bursts into life - carnival lights come on, the ensemble wander about dressed as various performers and hawkers, and my favourite bit, The Carousel (one of the animals is a White Boar, probably actually a warthog, but I am calling it a Whyte Boar because King Richard. End of story.). The Carousel is the first (if I remember correctly) set piece to showcase the Turntable, which will be present throughout the show (and at times make me very nervous for the performers' safety).
It was this scene that indicated to me that, although my friend and I were in theory only watching this show for the music and weren't expecting much otherwise, this was going to be a much more exciting production than we'd anticipated.
Scene 2: Onstage at Phantasma
"Only For You"
This, of course, is one of the cheesy 'Erik's Cheap Vaudeville Trash' scenes/songs from which one doesn't expect much to begin with. But it is the first time you hear Meg's voice. Mary Michael Patterson is amazing (get used to it, they were all amazing) - come to think of it, she may have been my favourite voice in the entire cast. Maybe. And it's hard not to at least be entertained by the stunts and antics in this scene.
Scene 3: Madame Giry's Office
"Mother, Did You See?"
This is one scene whose Aussie Revamp Changes disappointed, and still disappoint me. It probably does flow better this way, with Giry griping about Erik behind his back rather than actually to his face (though she'd probably not be afraid in the least to complain to his face). Hmm, come to think of it, it's more like Erik wouldn't bother hanging around with the Girys all that much except when necessary. Still, I liked this scene as Giry Confronts The Phantom, because it meant more Erik-solos. They took away Erik-solos and gave them to the Girys. Boring.
"Christine Disembarks"
No idea why the Playbill has this listed under "Giry's Office," when, uh...she clearly didn't walk right off a ship into Giry's office. Oh, well.
This scene is always entertaining with all the reporters running around throwing out so many wellknown names...and then there's "CHRISTINE!!" Dramatic Lights...reminds me of Norma Desmond's "YOU there..." entrance, except there is of course NO comparison, please don't kill me.
It's also sad because you see Raoul and Christine for the first time and notice all is not well with them.
Scene 4: Pier 69
"Arrival of the Trio"
"The Journey to Coney Island"
Not much to add. See "Christine Disembarks." Oh, and love Erik's shameless "Come to me, Angel of Music" plug just before transitioning to the hotel.
Scene 5: The Hotel
"What a Dreadful Town!"
The (short) transition from "Journey to Coney Island" to this remains one of the show's most epic moments. Any and all opportunities to showcase that amazing orchestra, feature specific instruments, etc - take them all! We'll eat it up!
Cue Raoul's first big Showcase My Voice moment. Sean Thompson is perfection. Unfortunately the song indicates Raoul has become a hardened, angry man with a bent for too much drinking. But, but but - here comes one of those wonderful changes - he actually relents and sits with Gustave to look at the toy music box, and even attempts making conversation about said music box. It's only for a few seconds and gets interrupted by someone at the door, but it was a much appreciated few seconds. What They Did to Raoul (or, I suppose, what Forsyth did to Raoul) remains one of the show's most upsetting aspects.
"Look With Your Heart"
Have never cared for this song, and still don't. But the scene itself is sweet.
"Beneath a Moonless Sky"
There's no helping this song. It needs to go. It tried to be another "Point of No Return," and failed miserably and embarrassingly.
"Once Upon Another Time"
Not the deepest or most profound lyrics ever written, but those tight harmonies! "We love, we live..." sends shivers down my spine every time. And Gardar and Meghan's voices complement each other so well!
"Mother, Please, I'm Scared"
This bit is meant to be nerve-wracking on so many levels... Erik's first time meeting Gustave, Erik threatening to make him "disappear" if Christine won't sing for him... But in reality this scene makes me collapse into hysterical giggles.
Erik setting Gustave up on the railing and Christine freaking out that he's going to fall - classic Mum and Dad right there.
But this is the best bit: "Who ARE YOU?!" "IIIiiiiiiiii am your ANNNNNNGEL of MUUUUSIC, and I am DYINNGGGGGG, Christine!!!!!1111oneoneone.” There's really no way to deliver these lines and NOT sound cheesy, so poor Meghan and Gardar did their best. But his delivery of this silly line showed one of his great qualities - he's very expressive with his arms. He's running towards her with arms extended zombie-style while crying "Iii am your angel of music..." It's hard to describe, but it was brilliantly amusing.
Scene 6: Backstage
"Bathing Beauty Rehearsal"
"Dear Old Friend"
Not much to say here... This song is always entertaining. Raoul's "I need a DRINK" line gets me every time.
Scene 7: The Lair
"Beautiful"
So, so so many surprises happened in this final scene of Act 1. I had no idea there had been any significant changes here. Gustave is singing "Beautiful," when all at once he begins playing the ending of "The Phantom of the Opera." And then proceeds to sing some of it. I began hyperventilating here and didn't really stop until intermission.
"The Beauty Underneath"
Admittedly, the transition from New-Beautiful to Beauty Underneath isn't the smoothest transition in the world, but it hardly matters.
New-Beauty Underneath is...wow. Although I have a certain fondness for the original London version, it always seemed rather out-of-place. This version fit so well, and the whole scene overall is one incredible, if overwhelming, spectacle. My only real complaint is that it's so "chaotic" it's hard to follow at times. I think, though, that's sort of the point.
Here is a scene where the Turntable seriously stressed me out. Gardar, crouched down with his hands on Casey's shoulders, does this backward-crouching-walk on the Turntable going the opposite direction. It feels like this walk lasts forever (in reality it's probably not long at all) and he seems to be walking so fast and the whole time you just think he's going to end up falling on his rear, bringing Casey down with him, and getting trampled. Yes, yes, I'm sure they had everything under control. But it was nerve-wracking to watch.
"The Phantom Confronts Christine"
I've loved this scene since the original cast album, and still do. I like how they've added Erik asking for forgiveness and giving Christine permission to leave, but her choosing to promise him that she'll sing first (foolish as that promise may have been). And the bit about Gustave being his "saving grace" - one of the only good things about the entire plot.
"Ten Long Years"
I always thought this was a bizarre way to end the act, but it seemed to work here. It helps that Karen Mason is a Powerhouse of a voice.
To Be Continued

War for the Planet of the Apes - Previs reel from Halon Entertainment on Vimeo.
War for the Planet of the Apes - Previs reel w/DVD footer
Directed by Matt Reeves
Duration: Previs Team US – 10 months; BC – 6 months; Postvis Team – 11 months
HALON reunited with our Dawn of the Planet of the Apes collaborator, director Matt Reeves, for War for the Planet of the Apes utilizing previs very early in the production process. Working closely with Reeves, we planned a number of huge sequences for the film. We developed proprietary tools and pipelines to render our previs on the Unreal Engine, which provided for more realistic lighting, dynamic effects and an overall higher level of visual polish, which translated to a more effective means of communicating the Reeves’ ideas to the production. Our efforts continued on-set where we provided rapid turnaround previs and techvis to assist the production as needed. In post-production, we generated postvis for several hundred shots in the film, working closely with editorial and WETA to ensure a unified look and level of polish. Throughout, we have used just about every tool in our creative arsenal: using both keyframe and both in-house and WETA motion capture in order to tell Matt Reeves’ epic story. Our contribution past the postvis phase, and our team came full-circle completing finals for many of our previs and postvis shots. Halon Team Credits

10 best movies of 2016!
Seems just about a right time to talk about movies.
2016 was a bit underwhelming but hey! We all love the movies and some of them in this past year where worthy of a celebration.
So, a regional Indian movie (Not Sairat) and a South Korean masterpiece have cropped up this time in my list.
Here are my 10 best movies of 2016:
10. Patterson
Tumblr media
A poised observation of the little things in our routine lives. A tale of defeats and triumphs as the day goes by. And some beautiful poetry along the way makes this effort a wonderful piece of art. “Adam Driver” gave a performance worthy of challenging even the likes of Denzel Washington and Casey Affleck but guess what, he was not even nominated for an Oscar.
9. Thithi (English: Funeral)
Tumblr media
Thithi (English: Funeral) is a 2016 Indian Kannada drama film co-written and directed by Raam Reddy. A wizened old man, over a hundred years and counting, suddenly keels over and dies. And sets into motion an absurdist comedy of manners which uses death to make gentle yet stinging points about life. Consisting of a cast of non-professional actors from a village in Karnataka this is India’s finest movie of 2016. Now available online with subtitles.
8. Arrival
Tumblr media
There is no thought without expression. An idea however profound it seems to you does not really exist until you can write it down or in some cases put in on film. Denis Villeneuve’s latest effort is highly effective and impactful by focusing on the very thing that affects and impacts us - Language.
The ability to put forward an idea that “The future can influence the past” and to have the skill and craft to put it on film is heavenly. This is  Denis Villeneuve’s finest effort and he already has “Prisoners”, “Incendies”, “Enemy”, “Sicario” on his CV to name a few. The movie bends time and isn’t linear. You only learn this at the very last scene. This itself should be reason enough to watch this.
7. Green Room
Tumblr media
A punk rock band is forced to fight for survival after witnessing a murder at a neo-Nazi skinhead bar and the further the film progresses the more your nails get bitten. Well, need any more motivation?? It starts the supremely talented “Imogen Poots”. :) Just drop everything and watch this mad mad effort put on film.
6. Ahgassi (English - The Handmaiden)
Tumblr media
Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden is a must-see, at least for those who don’t mind a little graphic violence and kinky sex to go with their misdirection. The extreme South Korean director of ‘Oldboy’ and ‘Stoker’ has made a love story, one where the lovers aren’t related or vampires or anything! To get to it, you just have to peel back all the layers of deception, just like the characters do. Available online with subtitles.
5. Manchester By The Sea
Tumblr media
Firstly, this is a horribly depressing movie.  I repeat, this is a horribly depressing movie.
But Kenneth Lonergan deals with the topic of grief is such a sublime manner that you are bound to remain invested in this one. Finest screenplay of 2016 with Oscar worthy performances from both Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams. Thankfully, Oscars got one of them right. Casey is stupendous on screen dealing with grief and loss.Michelle Williams deserved an Oscar for this scene alone (Refer pic above). It’s very hard not to break down during this scene or many others in the movie.  Manchester by the sea is a lot like unrequited love - Depressing but gorgeous.
4. La La Land
Tumblr media
Just go watch this for the finest opening scene to any movie ever. Period.
Then go watch this for everything that follows. Magical stuff from Damien Chazelle (Whiplash fame). Absolutely magical.  Music, dance, dreams, love and Emma Stone. <3 A combination that only can be seen at the movies. A combination to cherish.
3. Frank & Lola
Tumblr media
A psychosexual damaged love story, set in Las Vegas and Paris, about love, obsession, sex, betrayal, revenge and, ultimately, the search for redemption.
Michael Shannon is world class. And well, the supremely talented “Imogen Poots” gives a Oscar worthy performance and well! She wasn’t even nominated. A story that puts love in its most damaged form and excels.
2. Forushande (English - The Salesman)
Tumblr media
No one better than Asghar Farhadi to depict human relationships on screen. Rightfully won the Oscar for the best Foreign film.
This guy from Iran just keeps getting better.  This movie will strangle you but keep your pulse just enough for you to suffer.
1. Deadpool
Tumblr media
If I had to pick one mainstream movie that did not disappoint, and in fact delivered much more entertainment than I expected, it would be the hilariously potty-mouthed Deadpool. The film beautifully roasted all the clichés of superhero movies and was a fresh new addition to the increasingly decaying genre.
Easily the finest movie of 2016.
Notable mentions: I’m Not A Serial Killer , Elle

Latest story from https://movietvtechgeeks.com/la-la-land-stranger-things-atlanta-sweep-2017-pga-awards/
'La La Land,' 'Stranger Things' and 'Atlanta' sweep 2017 PGA Awards
“La La Land” is easily sweeping up all the awards this year, but Netflix’s “Stranger Things” jumped in on the action along with “Atlanta” for the 28th annual Producers Guild Awards (PGA).
The musical comedy-drama went up against “Arrival,” “Deadpool,” “Fences,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Hell or High Water,” “Hidden Figures,”  “Lion,” “Manchester by the Sea,” and “Moonlight,” but was able to come out the winner which was presented by Dustin Hoffman.
The guild recognized the candy-colored musical with its Darryl F. Zanuck Award for theatrical motion picture production Saturday, a prize that often precedes the best picture Academy Award. (Last year was an exception, when “The Big Short” won the guild award, while “Spotlight” got the Oscar.) The nominees for the guild’s top film prize echo Oscars’ best picture nominees this year, with the exception of “Deadpool,” which made the cut with producers but not the film academy.
But the guild’s celebration at the Beverly Hilton Hotel of the year’s outstanding film and television productions had a decidedly political tone, as President Donald Trump’s ban on refugees and visitors from several Muslim countries triggered protests in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle and other cities.
“Our America is big, it is free, and it is open to dreamers of all races, all countries, all religions,” singer John Legend said as he introduced “La La Land” at Saturday’s untelevised ceremony. “Our vision of America is directly antithetical to that of President Trump. I want to specifically, tonight, reject his vision and affirm America has to be better than that.”
Ezra Edelman, producer and director of “O.J.: Made in America,” which claimed the guild’s documentary prize, echoed Legend’s sentiments.
“Please keep telling stories that are about our humanity,” he said.
Other winners Saturday included “Zootopia” for animated feature, “Atlanta” for episodic television comedy and “Stranger Things” for episodic TV drama.
Presenters included Justin Timberlake, Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, Nicole Kidman, Jeff Bridges, Kerry Washington, Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese. Veteran producers James L. Brooks, Tom Rothman and Irwin Winkler received special awards.
Dustin Hoffman presented the night’s top prize. As producer Marc Platt accepted for “La La Land,” he said, “The power of cinema cannot be denied and has no borders … We must believe love can change our lives, much as it can change the world.”

Sketch comedy, potluck, political satire, lip syncing, drag queens, kid-friendly rock and roll and animated, nostalgic purple grapes: these are a few of our fans’ favorite things. And it turns out that the esteemed voting committee for the 69th Primetime and Creative Arts Emmy Awards likes them quite a bit too.
Between VH1, Comedy Central, Spike, Nickelodeon, and our Paramount Television production studio, Viacom brands scored 18 nominations.
Take a look at Viacom’s diverse roster of brands and the eclectic shows that impacted TV’s most prestigious award celebration:

VH1 – 8 Nominations
In April, VH1 announced its new tagline: “Where pop culture comes to party.”
Two of the network’s most buzzworthy shows—RuPaul’s Drag Race and Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party—truly exemplify this sentiment and embody VH1’s brand. They’re also up for Emmy awards.
Following its most-watched and highest-rated season to date, RuPaul’s Drag Race garnered the most Emmy nominations out of all Viacom shows, snagging eight bids for its groundbreaking series.

Drag Race strutted over to VH1 from Logo earlier this year after host RuPaul Charles’ won an award for best reality show host at the 2016 Emmy Awards.
“The Emmy win really cemented the show in mainstream pop culture, and VH1 is more broadly available in homes across the U.S.,” said Pamela Post, VH1’s original programming senior vice president in an interview with IndieWire. “[The network switch] was an opportunity to broaden the show’s viewership even further.”

VH1’s Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party also earned a nomination for outstanding host for a reality or reality-competition program. The VH1 show premiered last fall, and viewers were clamoring for a taste of the unlikely duo’s hospitality. The hosts delivered one of the most lit parties in unscripted TV, bringing along a bevy of celebrity guests, chill vibes and smokin’ side dishes—which proved to be a recipe for stellar ratings.
youtube
“The show’s premiere episode debuted to three million viewers,” wrote Business Insider, “Winning its time slot and becoming 2016’s highest-rated new unscripted show on cable for 2016.”
And while the D-O-G-G has yet to win a Grammy, VH1’s cult show offers the hip-hop legend a chance to win his first Emmy.

COMEDY CENTRAL – 7 Nominations
Comedy Central, an enduring favorite among the Emmy voters, brought in seven nominations this year, including one for South Park’s iconic Member Berries episode—in which animated grapes accommodated the fictional town’s nostalgia for the past.
At first, the sour grapes incessantly dropped pop culture references from yesteryear, but quickly evolved to giving sentient reminders about racist ideologies from the “good ol’ days.”

Drunk History, The Daily Show With Trevor Noah and Broad City all earned nominations for episodes and themes that are, for the most part, politically provocative, with progressive themes, diversity and topical conversation.

NICKELODEON – 1 Nomination
Outstanding Children’s Program • School of Rock
Nickelodeon’s dazzling slate of live-action and animated shows have earned Emmy attention in the past, and this year is no exception. The no. 1 brand in kids’ entertainment was recognized for its Paramount Television-produced musical sitcom School of Rock.
youtube
The show is lauded by both critics and parents for teaching kids the merits of teamwork, self-confidence and loyalty through the school of hard rock—aka a fictional prep school.
Its combination of charming gags and original, head-banging beats (along with guest stars like Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz) has made diehard fans out of the show’s target demographic—kids ages 6 to 15. School of Rock was adapted from Paramount’s wildly successful feature film of the same name, and is now in its third season.
SPIKE – 1 Nomination
Outstanding Structured Reality Program • Lip Sync Battle
Spike’s Lip Sync Battle earns an Emmy nomination for the second consecutive year.
In recent years, Spike has attracted a broad set of viewers with a focus on powerful storytelling and universally beloved shows, like Lip Sync Battle. This fall, the network will officially rebrand as the premium Paramount Network.
Think of Lip Sync Battle as a stripped-down version of fellow Emmy favorite RuPaul’s Drag Race, hosted by LL Cool J. Unlike Drag Race, where the contestants compete for a cash prize and the coveted title of “Next Drag Superstar,” Lip Sync Battle features known stars vying for a kitschy Lip Sync Battle Championship Belt. The winner is determined by a rousing round of applause, rather than a panel of judges.

But Lip Sync Battle has earned a massive, diverse audience with its low-key pageantry. Spike TV brings together a menagerie of oddball celebs like Anne Hathaway, John Legend and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to bust out bizarre dance moves and sing karaoke. The network actively eschewed creating a “brand” for Lip Sync Battle, opting instead to make the show as all-encompassing as possible. Executive producer Casey Patterson told Vulture in 2014 that this tactic reflects the broad spectrum of lip-sync fans.
youtube
“Lip-syncing is for everyone,” said Patterson. “If you go online, it’s dads and daughters, it’s moms, it’s women at work, it’s ageless, it’s genderless.”
This approach is what made Lip Sync Battle Spike’s highest-rated program, and its one reason the show will stick with the network when it changes names early next year.
PARAMOUNT TV – 2 Nominations (1 shared with Nickelodeon)
Outstanding Children’s Program (in association with Nickelodeon) •  School of Rock
Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (Original Dramatic Score) • A Series of Unfortunate Events (Netflix)
Viacom’s production and distribution unit works behind-the-scenes to create our own content and hit shows on other networks, including Netflix’s recent mini-series 13 Reasons Why and Fox’s Grease Live, which won four Emmys at the 2016 ceremony.
This year, Paramount TV earned an Emmy nod for its work on Nickelodeon’s fellow Emmy hopeful, School of Rock. It also was nominated for creating the ethereal, haunting score for Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Mark your calendar for the Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 17 at 8 p.m. on CBS, hosted by Comedy Central alum Stephen Colbert.

What a Toronto Raptors Rebuild Could Look Like
This article originally appeared on VICE Sports Canada.
Of the difficult questions the Toronto Raptors must answer this offseason, the biggest one, the one that stands to shape the direction of their franchise for years to come, is not entirely theirs. Kyle Lowry will become an unrestricted free agent in the coming days, and it's his choice whether to leave or stay—assuming the team wants him—that hangs over everything, the first domino in a complicated chain of decisions the Raptors have to make this offseason.
Should Lowry want to stay, the Raptors then have to decide whether they, too, want to continue the relationship and keep trying to compete with this core. There is a reasonable argument to be made that the Raptors should take a major step back regardless to maximize their chances at winning a championship down the line. There are no right or wrong answers or opinions in the tear-it-down-for-a-title vs. stay-good-and-entertaining debate, so if Lowry stays, you can argue either way.
If Lowry opts to leave, though, there's little sense in running things back. Retaining Serge Ibaka is financially plausible but would stand to more or less cap the team out with a much lower ceiling and little recourse of replacing Lowry, either by position or by talent. The Raptors face a tough call with Lowry and the core in general because they risk getting stuck in the middle, and that's an even greater certainty with a DeMar DeRozan-Ibaka core. That group probably tops out around 45 wins and one playoff series win, and the financial flexibility gained by letting Lowry walk isn't enough to see this group growing to substantially more. Lowry is the team's ceiling, and the tank-or-compete decision is made substantially easier if he leaves.
It's by no means a certainty the Raptors will go this route, and you are justified in hating the idea or loving it—this is a visceral, philosophical question with an answer that will vary by perspective—but if the Raptors were to tear things down, here's what it may look like.
Lowry Walks
Again, the biggest domino is Lowry leaving. Unfortunately for the Raptors, the sign-and-trade option that allowed them to recoup a pair of picks when Chris Bosh departed is a relic of a previous collective bargaining agreement. The sign-and-trade option still exists, but the player involved can no longer receive the extra year his prior team can offer him and the larger raises—Lowry doesn't stand to make a penny more this way than signing as a true free agent. (That the Raptors can offer him up to an estimated $55.1 million more than anyone else remains the reason they're probably still his most likely landing spot.)
That means a team like the Philadelphia 76ers has little reason to surrender an asset to facilitate the move. They can offer him the exact same deal with cap space. A sign-and-trade would only return the Raptors an asset if Lowry wants to land on a team without the full cap space required to sign him, which means Toronto can't necessarily bank on getting something in return. That's tough, but that's the nature of the current collective bargaining agreement.
The Other Free Agents
As covered, it makes little sense to spend to retain Ibaka if Lowry leaves, if Ibaka would even be amenable to that. Keeping P.J. Tucker might then be nice from a culture perspective, but the 32-year-old just spent four seasons in that role with the Phoenix Suns and would probably seek employment on a contender rather than a now-rebuilding Raptors squad. Patrick Patterson might suddenly make sense on a short-term deal to increase his value after a tough end to his 2016-17, but the money he'd command would probably be better spent taking a flier on an upside play.
If the Raptors let all four free agents walk, they would have $81.2 million in salary committed to 11 players and their first-round draft pick, good for about $19.8 million in cap space.
Shop DeRozan
The Raptors might do this quietly because of how much he means to the franchise, but they'd almost certainly try to find a new home for their all-time leading scorer in a rebuilding scenario. DeRozan will turn 28 this summer, and while he's the consummate example-setter the Raptors would want around a young core, the team wouldn't figure to be competitive again until he's on the downside of 30. It could be a case of doing right by the player, too, rather than subjecting him to those tough rebuilding seasons.
With four years and $111 million left on his deal (the fourth year is a player option), DeRozan isn't the easiest of trade chips to make work, but because he signed slightly below the max before the final cap spike, he only stands to take up about 27 percent of a team's cap rather than the 35 percent full-max free agents can command. He's not a perfect fit for the modern NBA with a middling 3-point stroke and shaky defense. He's also the league's best mid-range scorer, is coming off the most efficient scoring season of his career on incredibly high usage, has taken strides as a playmaker, and seems to get better every year.
Photo by Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports
Who might want him is complicated, and Raptors fans dreaming on a top-five pick in return probably need to recalibrate. Magic Johnson wants a star to build the Los Angeles Lakers around and Nike would surely love a player who modeled himself after Kobe Bryant while growing up in Compton returning home to take over not just Bryant's team but also his sneaker legacy. But DeRozan isn't a tidy fit with head coach Luke Walton's style and the Lakers already have a few young guards they're building around (and, if they keep their pick, could draft another in June). Charlotte, Dallas, Denver, and the Knicks are all varying degrees of interesting, and if the Raptors floated his name, there would surely be offers.
Trading one of the best players in franchise history is tough. DeRozan is too good to keep, though, in terms of assets left on the table and because he'd raise the team's level of play too high to truly tank.
Other Trade Chips
Toronto could try to trade pretty much whoever isn't nailed down and young, but the options are fairly limited. Cory Joseph could be dealt easily but is still just 25 and on a good deal for at least one more year. DeMarre Carroll's contract becomes less burdensome if the team isn't in the tax, and it might make more sense to try to let him rebound rather than using the stretch provision on him in this case. Jonas Valanciunas might still be deemed superfluous given the other centers on the roster, and at 25 and with some theoretical untapped upside could have a market. But his value is probably at a nadir with the center market as flooded as it is, so he, too, might make more sense as a hold.
The Raptors already have seven players on their first contracts plus a pick incoming. They would probably want to keep at least two or three of their remaining veterans around as culture-builder and stop-gap minutes-eaters, at least while their value is rehabilitated.
Free Agents to Chase
With just shy of $20 million in potential cap space, and substantially more if DeRozan was dealt without taking significant salary back, the Raptors could take a flier or two on younger free agents with upside. This summer's market isn't exceptionally flush, and the Raptors wouldn't want to tie up too much money with a handful of players hitting restricted free agency in 2018 (including Norman Powell), but they might not keep their powder dry entirely.
Among names who would fit the timeline, aren't centers, and have some degree of upside depending on the price, are Otto Porter, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Tony Snell, Tim Hardaway Jr., Shabazz Muhammad, Andre Roberson, Joe Ingles, and a bunch more. The RFA class is pretty deep, though it obviously comes with complications and the ability for other teams to match offer sheets.
And there's Dion Waiters. Obviously.
Dwane Casey's Status
Whether or not the Raptors will trust head coach Dwane Casey to carry out their "culture reset" is somewhat unclear. There's more of a case to be made for it if the Raptors are staying competitive. If they're tearing down and rebuilding, it may make sense to shift in another direction with a fresh voice with player development experience. Whether that's someone on the staff (Nick Nurse or Rex Kalamian), an outside hire, or the promotion of Jerry Stackhouse following an immensely successful season with Raptors 905, the coaching chair would almost definitely be under evaluation. Taking the chance on Stackhouse, who is going to be an NBA head coach one way or another at some point, would seem the best path in a rebuild.

Looking Ahead
Here's where the realities of a teardown kind of sink in. This isn't a sure thing, and it's not a quick fix. Tanking, or whatever you want to call it (does a "strategic step back" work?), is the best way of acquiring a superstar on balance of probability, and acquiring a superstar is the best way to compete for a championship. Really, though, the odds are still quite slim—you can tank and lose the lottery multiple years in a row (even finishing dead last, the chances of landing the No. 1 pick are just 25 percent), you can be hit by injury luck, things can break right but the timing is off or you make the wrong call (shout out to Primo pasta and sauce), or everything can go well and you still find yourself in the same position Toronto's been in the last two years, with a very good team trying to make the jump to great.
The Raptors would probably be looking at two seasons in the mud, at a minimum. They might be able to land an extra first-round pick in the 2017 draft, but it probably won't be a top one. The draft is strong, though, so maybe Toronto comes out of it with two more solid building blocks. With the league light on tanking teams in the near-term, Toronto's path to a high pick in 2018 might be an easy one, and Chad Ford has called the top of the 2018 draft "spectacular" (with a drop-off after the top tier). Local product R.J. Barrett is currently the No. 1 recruiting prospect for the college class of 2019 (2020 draft class) but could reclassify for 2018, which would put him in line to be a high pick in 2019. You can almost see the #GrinAndBarrett hashtag starting to trend in Toronto.
You can start to see why some like this approach. Draft talk is exciting, and prospects are fun. With strong leadership, it's easy to buy into a long-term outlook and trust the process. It's hard, though. About as hard as the position the Raptors find themselves in if they want to compete, just different. It means at least a few years of being bad, trusting you'll develop talent well, banking on a few breaks in timing and ping-pong balls and health, and hoping it all doesn't just lead you right back to this same spot.
