My print for @carpenoctemzine! I was inspired to make this by looking at a lot of old art noveau pieces specifically from france in the 1890's. Most designs of that era just so happened to be opera posters or advertisements for theaters. So I decided to do my own supernatural twist on it, with the dripping blood from a set of fangs to make a frame befitting the art movement!

Soroush’s vision tunnels at the sight of the first ruby drop, his breath quickening. He unconsciously leans forward. Blood spills over Ismail’s arm into a waiting vessel, rich and stark against the polished metal, the same deep red as pomegranate seeds.

There’s a heat coming off it. It’s tempting, comforting, even. It begs to be enjoyed and savored. Soroush wants to dip his hand in it, feel it in the grooves of his fingerprints, suck each and every finger clean.

“Well?” Ismail says, impatient. The wad of cotton pressed against the incision is stained and already browning at the edges. The tourniquet lies on the floor between them like a discarded snake skin. Ismail watches him. “Is that enough?”

It’s not. In truth, it’s never enough.

Carpe Noctem: Vampires Through the Ages is an anthology of original art, comics, and historical fiction about vampires around the world. I’m contributing a short story about a Heian-period vampire titled “The Kumo Diary,” which follows a Meiji-era scholar’s assistant who discovers an old manuscript that she initially mistakes as a lost chapter from The Tale of Genji. It was a lot of fun to write about Heian-period demonic women, and I also enjoyed doing research in order to put together the Meiji-period frame story. I’m very proud of the twist at the end, and I hope readers will get a pleasant chill from the gradual transformation of the two narrators’ distinctive voices.

My short story's titled The Night Fortune's Devil and it's about gay vampire pirates! Here's the excerpt I promised:

Luckily, the Night Fortune cut through the blue waters of the Caribbean without trouble, now turning golden with the dying sun rays. It really was a sight to see, how the light played with the ocean, how the virgin islands gleamed white-and-green as they sailed past, each one a perfect Eden for them to disembark upon and explore if they so wished. When Guillermo had left his chains behind and joined his first pirate crew, he hadn’t expected the selfless beauty that the world would shower upon him unprompted. He had craved freedom, no matter the pain, and though there had been lots of that, the breathless wonder had never left him. It truly was Paradise on Earth. And, like in all other man-made paradises, devils lurked.
