also my copy of A Wizard of Earthsea was clearly once used by someone taking a class on it, which means it has little notes and underlines. This is my favorite so far:
Tumblr media
[underlined text] Now through the grey fog bloomed a blur of red, as the Kargs set fire to the thatch of a house.
In the teeny tiny margin, someone has written "bad"
yeah, buddy, it sure is!!

now on the podcast Backlog Books (link in pinned post)
A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin
Ged was the greatest sorcerer in Earthsea, but in his youth he was the reckless Sparrowhawk. In his hunger for power and knowledge, he tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. This is the tumultuous tale of his testing, how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death's threshold to restore the balance.

Books Read in October
In the Garden of Iden by Kage Baker (for the podcast)
historical science fiction romance?? Is that a real genre?
The Whispering Skull by Jonathan Stroud
Fair Game by Patricia Briggs
I have officially burned out on the Briggs books. They’re still good. I’m just tired of them and need a break. That’s what I get for reading 8 of these books in a month </3
The Hollow Boy by Jonathan Stroud
The Creeping Shadow by Jonathan Stroud
The Farthest Shore by Ursula K. Le Guin
Also a surprisingly creepy read! I listened to the audiobook. I was kind of ambivalent about the narrator. But it was a good time, nonetheless.
Little Thieves by Margaret Owen (for the podcast)
The Empty Grave by Jonathan Stroud (for the podcast).
This whole series was very good.
Up Next:
More Vorkosigan Saga, whenever those books arrive. (today? pakiges? for me?)
Since I have the next 2 months of podcast scripts kind of figured out already, I’m attempting to add some non-fiction to my rotation. We’ll see how it goes. I’m open to non-fiction suggestions! I’m easing my way in, so I’d rather read something fun than challenging and dark.

You're reading the wizard of earthsea?? Jsgstsgsjsi i read it as a child and am rereading it now it hits hard especiallly cuz i have my 13yo self's perception of it to compare to
Yeah! I've read the first 3 Earthsea books now. I never read them when I was younger, so I don't have any nostalgia to compare them with, but I've been enjoying them immensely.
I'm definitely going to read the rest, eventually. I may end up reading Le Guin's entire catalog 😅

32 and 45? I'm trying to get back into reading, any other great suggestions in fantasy would be great too!
Oooo
32. Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
An excellent one! Bree goes to an early college program to run away from grieving her mother, and stumbles into a magic secret society on campus, populated by descendants of the knights of the round table.
Lots of talk about grief and systematic racism.
(also on my podcast :) )
45. The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula Le Guin
An Earthsea book! These are short, good reads. They're almost fairytales. Beautiful writing. You can read them as standalones.
Arha is the priestess of the Nameless gods, taken from her family as a child to serve the gods. She's told how powerful her gods are but all around her are signs of their decaying worship. And then a wizard appears, seeking to steal a great treasure from the labyrinth of the Nameless ones.
send me a number between 1-72 and I'll tell you about a book I read last year! (Already done: 18, 25, 27, 32, 45)
