"hand in unlovable hand, that's how the lyric goes, right?" with a sorrowful smile, you weakly hold out your hand to your side. so much has happened, so much time has passed, and yet none at all. it's amazing, it's terrifying, beautiful, disgusting, everything and nothing.

"well, you are coming down with me," mars muttered with a dry laugh, he looked away as he firmly grasped your palm. he had spent so much time running after you, trying to ground himself in what he knows... and it was for everything and for naught.

recognizing the feeling of everything in the room, you both inhale. the jumpsuits that had been torn and mended, hats and helmets that have gone flying and have been stuck to your heads, gloves that felt more like your hands with them than without. the portal's power was in full before you both.

the swirl, the damned blue. the echoing voices from all over and inside, hearing bits and pieces from your own respective experiences. turning to your head engineer, reminiscing one of the nicknames you had given him long ago during one of your 'portal adventures' again.

"mars?" turning to you with a question prepared, you finished. "there is so much i wish i could tell you. i want to tell you all of what had happened and what could have... but-"

he cut you off. "captain," squeezing your hand, tears threatening the corners of his eyes, he finished your inside joke from lifetimes ago. from when you had first boarded the ship, the introduction to your family. ...well, who would've been your family if it had turned out different.

"i hope we both die."

nodding to each other, sad smiles decorating your faces, you both look ahead. taking synchronized steps towards the portal, neither of you mention the tears coming down your faces. you both hug each other desperately, almost clawing each other with how much was behind it, crying properly. letting your emotions unload themselves from your backs was difficult but needed.

too bad it’s cut off before you get catharsis.
