-beans of various types-
The fourth son of the Cao household was leading a one-man war in the courtyard of the main house. His name was Cao Zhi, and he was a little boy of five years. Old enough to wear proper trousers, though his hair was still shaved in the middle and braided into two ox-horns on the sides. His sword was a stick, and his horse was a broom. Cao Zhi ran this way and that, leading soldiers that only his eyes could see.
“Crossbows back, ji forward! Hold fast and prepare to engage!” He had plenty of brothers but preferred to play alone. It wasn’t as much fun, but at least there was no one to scold him for being annoying or twist his arm when he talked back.
Victory was at hand, such was his concentration, Cao Zhi did not hear the horses arriving at the main gate or the servants rushing out to greet “Lord Cao!” A moment later, a man dressed in a short, plain riding coat stepped quietly into the courtyard and stopped under the shade of a tree to watch him.
“One more push, men! Calvary to the left and right! We’ll break their arrays and put them to route!”  Most people would have been surprised to hear such a young child recite word-perfect battlefield commands at an age when most were singing nursery rhymes. The man in the shade watched him attentively without speaking a word. There was a complicated expression on his face.
Cao Zhi turned around and finally noticed that he had attracted an audience. The instant his eyes alighted on the man, his face split into a gap-toothed grin.
“Eldest Brother! Eldest Brother!” he cried and ran forward with his arms outstretched. Then, he remembered that his half-brother was now a man grown and the Heir Apparent to boot, so giving him a big hug was Not Proper anymore. He quickly stopped and bowed. “Greetings, Elder Brother. Zhi hopes you have travelled well.”
“I did, thank you,” replied his eldest brother, Cao Ang. He returned the bow, and his movements seemed a hundred times more refined in the boy's eyes. “I trust you’ve been in good health, Fourth Brother?”
“Yes. I am well.” Cao Zhi said, suddenly feeling very shy. It had been nearly a year since they had last spoken. Cao Ang left home as a brother and returned as a lord, capped and gowned, with a sword at his side and a dusty whip hanging from his belt. Between working in the civil service and accompanying Father on campaigns, there was a noticeable change in his manners and speech. The fifteen years between them suddenly felt as impassable as a mountain. Cao Ang had become impossibly tall, grand and grown-up. Almost more imposing than Father.
Perhaps it would be better if Cao Zhi played in the inner courtyard, out of his brother’s way. “May I take my leave, Eldest Brother?”
“Hold it,” Cao Ang commanded. His face was stern, but there was no mistaking the humorous twinkle in his eyes. “Did you think I wouldn’t notice? How dare you approach your liege with your weapon bared!”
Cao Zhi realised that he was still holding onto his stick. He giggled and made a show of putting it into his belt, in place of a scabbard. “Please forgive your vassal’s impudence.”
“I fail to see what’s so funny, young man.” Cao Ang said, dead serious, which only made his little brother laugh harder. “I could have been run through!”
It happened just like that. As swiftly as a burst of water unblocking a choked-up stream. Any lingering awkwardness was gone, and the two of them began chatting and laughing like no time had passed.
(To be continued)

Comprehensive Biography of Cao Ang
Cao Ang (曹昂字子脩; d. Spring 197) was a noble during the Late Han dynasty. He was the eldest son of Cao Cao, and would sacrifice his life for him after Zhang Xiu ambushed them.
Life
Cao Ang was born to Lady Liu, the eldest of Cao Cao's sons. He had a full sister, the Princess of Qinghe, and a full brother, Cao Shuo.[1][2] However, Lady Liu died young, so Cao Cao's main wife, Lady Ding, raised Cao Ang as if he were her own son.[1]
He was nominated as Filial and Incorrupt.[2] Around Spring 197, Cao Cao was tricked by Zhang Xiu at Wan, in an ambush. His steed, Absolute Shadow, was hit in the legs and cheek, rendering it incapable of running. Cao Ang saw this and knowing he himself could not ride horses well, gave his own horse to Cao Cao in order for him to escape. Cao Ang died, probably from the barrage of arrows.[3]
Postmortem events
When Cao Cao was seriously ill and bed-ridden, he allegedly sighed and said,
"I have always followed my intentions, and my heart never felt troubled. But supposing that I died and became a spirit, if Zixiu asks, 'Where is my mother,' what would I reply with?"[1]
After Cao Pi succeeded Cao Cao and became Emperor shortly after, he was recorded saying,
"My Filial and Incorrupt elder brother would certainly have his share [of land if he was still here]."
Around 202, Cao Pi would later posthumously promote Cao Ang to the rank of Duke of Feng, and in 203, had the Duke of Fan; Cao Jun's son, Wan, adopted into Cao Ang's line, as Cao Ang had no sons, and enfeoffed him as a duke.[4] Around 205, Cao Ang was later posthumously promoted to Prince of Feng.[5]
Family
Cao Ang had no sons of his own. Cao Wan was adopted into his line.[4]

Yu the Great and Sun Wukong's Staff
This is my answer to the following reddit question:
Did the Ruyi Jingu Bang, as a tool used by Da Yu, exist before the novel?
Monkey's golden-hoop iron staff can be traced to the khakkhara and iron rod respectively used by his precursor in the 13th-century JTTW. The story doesn't mention anything about Yu the Great. The demi-god's connection to the staff is, as far as I know, unique to the standard 1592 edition of JTTW.
This association probably came about in a couple of ways. For example, there is a Chinese graphic similarity (and possible totemic connection) between Yu and a specific kind of monkey:
The generic Chinese primate names have identical pronunciations or spellings to those of the earliest Chinese emperors. For instance, the character 猱 (Nao) is considered as the ancestral name of the royal family of Shang dynasty (商朝 ca. 1600–1050 BCE) (Cao, 1997; Wang, 2001). This word is used to denote a primate species that is good at climbing. Similarly, the character 禺 (Yu) represents a long-tailed monkey. This word is the same as the character 禹 (Yu), a legendary emperor well known for his brilliance in regulating floodwater (Huang, 2011). This association between primates and the earliest emperors indicates a possible totemic status for primates (Niu, Ang, Xiao, et al., 2002, p. 91).
(The aforementioned Yu (禺) monkey was apparently well-known, for it is referenced several times in the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhai jing, 山海經, c. 4th-century to 1st-century BCE), a popular Chinese bestiary, in order to indicate the shape and size of certain primate-like animals (Strassberg, 2002, pp. 83, 84, 91, 99, 104, 122, 123).)
Tumblr media
Also, Yu is known for imprisoning Wuzhiqi (無支奇 / 巫支祇), a monkey flood demon, beneath a mountain in Tang and Song-era folklore. This likely influenced Sun Wukong's punishment under Five Elements Mountain.
Therefore, all of this probably led to the author-compiler of the 1592 JTTW associating Monkey's staff with Yu the Great and his efforts to end the world flood.

i really like writing about boring people. i like putting the most mid guy in existence next to the protagonist suffering from glorious purpose. here is a guy with no special skills, no blessings from the narrative, no outlandish identifying traits. and he can be just as interesting as the other guy as long as you make him feel real. banality is sublime to me.

Finished Unchained Love and I gotta ask. WHAT THE FRICKETY FRACK WAS THAT ENDING??? I have so many questions. Spoilers below.
Tumblr media
The questions off the top my head are- 1. Did Bu Yin Lou and Xiao Duo just run off into the sunset? No problems in their escape?
2. Did the emperor die? Or was he deposed? When he fell, I hope he had a heart attack.
4. What happened to the rest of the Zhaoding Bureau? Did they escape properly?
5. Was Yu Zun’s lie discovered? I mean, what are they gonna do if the Emperor demands to see the body?
6. Did He De take over the country? Or does Murong Gao Gong continue with his mad tyranny?
7. Was Empress Dowager released?
8. What was the point of Cao Chun Ang's fake death scene? So bizarre.
There were some good bits, though. 1. Peter Ho's high pitched voice in the last few episodes was so chilling. Excellent acting.
2. I loved the scene where Bu Yin Lou slaps Murong Gao Gong and tells him what's what.
3. The action scene where Xiao Duo fights the soldiers send by Bu Yu Lu. Beautiful!
4. The entire attempted coup. Fantastically done.
5. Solid start. I really loved the beginning of the story.
6. The scene where Murong Gao Gong makes Bu Yin Lou stab her cousin. It was visceral. (What was the point of him living through that, though? The guy was never mentioned again).
7. I loved that Eunuch Sun got his just desserts. He was such an enabler.
This series left me with such mixed feelings, though. When I saw the start, I was excited and hoped for a matured, forbidden love story in a cut-throat political world. This series had it ALL! Great set up, good actors, decent production quality, and a very strong start. The problems started with the way the leads fall in love. It just... happened.
And I get it. Sometimes, that's how it is. But not once did I feel like the foundation of their love was strong enough to go against practically the entire imperial power. Some of the choices the script writers made were actually lazy. Like Rong An's plot. She could have been a formidable villain, but she was cast aside for half the show. The issues with censorship didn't help the show either.
That said, credit where credit is due, the characters were done well. They are well rounded characters, each having shades. I also liked that the female lead was shown to be someone unabashed for being who she is. It's a refreshing change. The performances were solid too.
Overall, I will give this somewhere between 6.5-7 stars out of 10. I cannot in good faith give it a full 7.

Heroes of Chaos Review
Second book about Liao Hua's life in Baptiste Pinson Wu's series, covering 190-196. Three parts (plus epilogue) for this tale.
The battles are better, Huluo Gate for example is very well done and dramatic, one gets the sense of the power of a certain mighty warrior, also some very good playing into how the central plain figures feel about the figures of the north like Dong Zhuo and the fear of tribes. Also Zhang Fei still amuses me.
The battles tend to be well done, varied in style with a sense of tactics (and competent opponents) but fairly short with focus on what it means for Liao Hua, his role in it. With the early part of the civil war (the title should give a hint which early warlord this focuses one), there was a risk of battles dominating but it avoids that, the battles are enjoyable but are carefully spaced.
If Liao Hua in the first book is a growing child, learning and not able to take up arms, this second is Liao Hua as a young soldier. Confident in his abilities, in his lord but with a lot to learn (and not always appreciating that). The training allows to build new characters around Liao Hua and bring in figures like sergeant-major Yu Jin and some adviser figures while figures like Xu Chu, Lady Bian (love their scenes) and Cao Ang remain. While you see the efforts being made to become an army that can fight, the sense of improvement as a miliatry man for Liao Hua and others.
I even liked Chen Gong. For which I can almost forgive Baptiste.
His chosen master who is not quite the smooth rising figure that the novel paints him as while still being a charismatic and wily figure, he is error prone and emotional. Brilliant and clever but like Liao Hua, though older, still also with much to learn and one sees his journey and development progressing.
The ability of characters to grow, to learn, to change is very much still there, just changed to a miliatry situation. While also not shirking away from this being a period of warfare, including one of the most brutal camapigns of the time is covered in this book, but balancing it with little moments for characters to celebrate, a bit of humour, an awareness from the characters at what is going on.
Baptiste does well in ensuring outside events and wider land situation is properly presented while keeping the tale focused on Liao Hua and friends. Of why certain events matter, leaving little bread-crumbs for events to come for the history fan (and I think people who aren't aware of the histories will like the teases/foreshadowing) while letting there be surprises.
While there was one thing that I felt hadn't quite built up enough in parts 1 and 2 for the moment in part 3 to have the impact it was going for, there is enough about it for me to look forward to how it unfolds. Generally through, it has really built well into setting up book three and how events will play out.
For history fans, there remains the fun cameo's of lesser known figures (Chu Gong in book one for example) to spot, some figures that get a little sidelined usually are done in intresting ways (there is a certain Han figure I was really pleased with how he was done), great foreshadowing (particularly around Liao Hua the narrator), it is nice seeing neglected parts of Cao Cao's early time in Yan covered and there are lovely cultural touches. Liao Hua does, given this is a novel about Liao Hua, have a more prominent role (though not all he does succeeds) and Baptiste does add some fiction of his own but would say, with the two books, he has earned the right to see how those changes play off in long term.
So yeah, I enjoyed the second novel. The long term development goes well, I like many of the characters, I enjoy the moments we spend with elderly Liao Hua and I am looking forward to book three and seeing how certain things play out.

Was Zhao Ang actually killed during the Battle of Mount Dingjun? Or was it just a weird coincidence that Zhao Yong who was around at the time happened to have a similar name and hold the same appointment as the former?
It's hard to say. I don't think we should be too quick to assume that they are one and the same.
First Zhao Yong, because he's easier. There's actually only one reference to Zhao Yong, in SGZ 2.
Xiānzhǔ ordered Huáng Zhōng to climb high and drum and trumpet to attack them, greatly defeating [Xiàhóu] Yuān's army, beheading [Xiàhóu] Yuān and Excellency Cáo's installed Yì Province Inspector Zhào Yóng and others.
A helpful footnote adds:
This is the only extant reference to a Zhào Yóng 趙顒, but it has been proposed this may be an error or another name for Zhào Áng 趙昂. For Zhào Áng and his wife Wáng Yì 王異 see the biography of Yáng Fù 楊阜 in SGZ 25 and its annotations.
That summarizes it pretty well. It's not an outlandish assumption to make, but we also shouldn't jump to conclusions.
Everything recorded about Zhao Ang comes from the biography of his countryman Yang Fu (SGZ 25.2), and particularly from passages appended by Pei Songzhi from Huangfu Mi's Liènǚzhuàn 列女傳.
Huangfu Mi tells us that he fought against Ma Chao at Qishan, which would have been in January of 214. It says nothing of him after that. The base text of Yang Fu's biography indicates that he was enfeoffed for his efforts against Ma Chao, but it also says nothing further about him.
I found no source saying that Zhao Ang was ever made a provincial inspector. And in my opinion, the characters characters 顒 and 昂 are not at similar. They look different, they represent different sounds, they have different meanings. For one to become the other takes more than a misplaced brushstroke or a misheard word.
Let's talk about mistakes. SGZ has a few, and one very good one comes from Ling Tong's biography.
When the matters were finished and he was about to leave, it happened that he fell ill and died, at the time aged forty-nine years 事畢當出,會病卒,時年四十九。
Why do we assume this is an error? Earlier events in his biography make it clear that he was born in 189, which would make his death in 238. The trouble is that the events immediately prior to his death took place in 218. Even if Ling Tong simply settled down for 20 years to do nothing, it would not have been phrased this way. On top of that, no other biographies mention Ling Tong after the year 218. He is notably absent from the major battles against Liu Bei and Cao Pi in the next few years. It is difficult to imagine him being excluded if he was alive. For these reasons, it is widely accepted that this SGZ passage is in error. Someone mistakenly wrote 4 instead of 2 and the error was repeated.
These things happen. The name Zhao Yong may be such an error. But I don't think the evidence is strong enough to say that for certain. There are other explanations that are at least equally plausible. He may have been a kinsman of Zhao Ang, for example, elevated because of his family's service. He might have been an entirely unrelated person; Zhao is not a strange surname.
Now, it's possible that I missed a reference to Zhao Ang being made the provincial inspector during that time. If so, I think the theory becomes much more likely. If Zhao Ang didn't have the position, though (and I do not think he did) I don't see why we should suppose Zhao Yong is the same man.

Comprehensive Biography of Zhang Xiu
Zhang Xiu (張繡; d. Autumn 207) was a warlord based in Wan. He was one of Cao Cao's most dangerous opponents in the years before the Battle of Guandu, with their skirmishes often ending in victories for him. Despite his military prowess, however, Cao Cao had more resources, so he chose to surrender, being received gracefully. He later served Cao Cao as a general, helping out Cao Cao stomp out the Yuan clan in the north.
Ancestry
Zhang Xiu came from Zuli County, Wuwei Commandery. He was Zhang Ji's "kinsmen-son", meaning that though from the same clan branch, he was one generation below Zhang Ji.[1]
Early life
While Bian Zhang and Han Sui rebelled in Liang Province, Qu Teng killed the Chief of Zuli; Liu Jun. Though Qu Teng made Zhang Xiu a county official, Zhang Xiu was resentful of him. He would spy on Qu Teng and later killed Qu Teng when he got the chance. The entirety of Wuwei Commandery respected him for this deed. Soon, he recruited young men into his army, gaining him a fearsome reputation.[2]
Around 192, Zhang Xiu followed Zhang Ji into Chang'an and helped him kick out Lü Bu. For this and other achievements, he was made General who Establishes Loyalty and enfeoffed as Marquis of Xuanwei.[2] Zhang Xiu at this time became acquainted with Jia Xu. As turmoil in Chang'an grew worse and worse, Zhang Xiu said to Jia Xu,
"We cannot stay within here for long. Sir, why not leave?"
Jia Xu replied that he'd rather stay in Chang'an than leave for the Emperor.[3] Eventually, Zhang Ji, from his initial garrison at Hongnong Commandery, travelled south to attack Rang in a desperate bid to get food for him and his troops, only to be killed. Zhang Xiu inherited Zhang Ji's troops and garrisoned at Wan, where he and Liu Biao allied.[2] It seems that Zhang Xiu was successful in feeding his troops. Also at this time, Zhang Xiu sent a messenger to Jia Xu, inviting him to join him. Jia Xu accepted, and Zhang Xiu made him his main strategist.[8]
Wan
In Spring 197, the powerful Cao Cao led his army to the Yu River, threatening Zhang Xiu.[2][4] Zhang Xiu and his troops surrendered, only for Cao Cao to become close with Zhang Ji's widow, gaining Zhang Xiu's fury. When Cao Cao heard of Zhang Xiu's anger, he was annoyed and secretly planned to kill Zhang Xiu. However, Zhang Xiu heard of the plot and was even more angry.[2] In addition, Cao Cao was handing out gold to Hu Che'er (胡車兒), who was very close to Zhang Xiu and known for his bravery. Zhang Xiu was fearful that Cao Cao would influence Hu Che'er to assassinate him.[5] Later, following Jia Xu's strategy, Zhang Xiu asked Cao Cao to move to a high position that led to Cao Cao's camp, which was agreed. Then he asked,
"My chariots are few and heavy. I ask for your consent to let my troops wear armor."
Cao Cao agreed, not thinking anything was off.[6] Previously, Zhang Xiu set up a large banquet for Cao Cao. While Cao Cao was very drunk, Zhang Xiu and his generals were contemplating to act, only to see Cao Cao's bodyground, Dian Wei, watching them with glared eyes. Frightened, Zhang Xiu and the others did not act at that time.[7] Now in a favorable position due to Jia Xu's plan, Zhang Xiu ambushed Cao Cao with armored troops before he could fully realize it. Cao Cao was caught unaware, with his son Cao Ang and his nephew Cao Anmin being killed.[2]
Standing his Ground
Cao Cao fled to Wuyin, with Zhang Xiu in pursuit, ignoring the protests of Jia Xu. Cao Cao was able to defeat him, forcing him to withdraw to Rang to protect it.[2][4] Jia Xu later told Zhang Xiu to attack Cao Cao's force, now led by his generals, but an incredulous Zhang Xiu replied,
"I did not heed your words, thus we came to this point. Now that I have been defeated, why should we pursue them again?"
Jia Xu said that Cao Cao was occupied with something else and would be defeated. Zhang Xiu thus attacked Cao Cao's force, defeating him. Zhang Xiu later asked Jia Xu,
"I used elite troops to pursue a retreating army, yet you said I would surely be defeated. When I retreated, I used my defeated soldiers to attack a victorious army, yet you said I would surely triumph. All of such is just as you said. Why when it was opposite did all come true [for you]?"
Jia Xu replied that though Zhang Xiu was strong, he was no match for Cao Cao's tact, but though Cao Cao's generals that led Cao Cao's force were brave as well, Zhang Xiu was stronger than them.[5] Zhang Xiu would withstand constant attacks from Cao Cao with the support of Liu Biao.[2] As Cao Cao withdrew to Xuchang, he angrily said to his advisors,
"When I had Zhang Xiu's surrender, I made a mistake by not quickly taking hostages, hence we came to this point! Gentlemen, observe me! From today and afterwards, I shall not be defeated again!"
Concurrently, the counties of Nanyang and Zhangling rebelled against Cao Cao in favor of Zhang Xiu. Cao Cao sent Cao Hong to try to attack him, but was repulsed, so Cao Hong garrisoned Ye County, withstanding attacks from both Zhang Xiu and Liu Biao.[4]
In Spring 198, Cao Cao besieged Rang for two months before concerns over Yuan Shao led him to withdraw. Zhang Xiu once again pursued Cao Cao with support from Liu Biao. As Cao Cao was retreating to Anzhong, he also sent a message to Xun Yu that stated,
"The enemy has come to pursue me, but though they travel several miles each day, I have a plan for them. When I reach Anzhong, the defeat of Xiu is certain!"
The allied forces of Zhang Xiu attacked Cao Cao on both his rear and front, but were not able to achieve a total victory. Overnight, Cao Cao dug tunnels in strategic spots, smuggling in supplies as well as setting up an ambush. When dawn reached, Zhang Xiu's army thought Cao Cao escaped, so they gave pursuit, only to be ambushed and gravely defeated.[8]
Joining Cao Cao
Around late 199, when Cao Cao was at a standoff with Yuan Shao, Yuan Shao sent an envoy to Zhang Xiu, asking him to ally/join with him. Zhang Xiu was about to agree to it, when Jia Xu said to the envoy,
"Return with our apologies for Yuan Benchu. If brothers cannot tolerate each other, then can they tolerate national scholars of the world?"
A shocked Zhang Xiu exclaimed,
"How could you come to this?"
Later, Zhang Xiu asked Jia Xu privately,
"If so, then who to join?"
When Jia Xu told him to join Cao Cao vaguely, Zhang Xiu replied,
"The Yuan are strong and the Cao are weak. Also, we and the Cao have a feud. Why should we follow him?"
Jia Xu said that one: Cao Cao had the authority of having Emperor Xian; two: Yuan Shao does not hold Zhang Xiu in high regard because he already has a large army, but Cao Cao does not, and is more likely to welcome Zhang Xiu warmly; third: Cao Cao, having grand ambitions, will forgive Zhang Xiu so they can work together. Zhang Xiu agreed and led his troops to surrender to Cao Cao once again.[2][8][11][12] Despite their previous animosity, Cao Cao shook his hands in a friendly manner and set up a feast for him. To solidify their new-found alliance, Cao Cao had his son Cao Jun wed Zhang Xiu's daughter, and also promoted Zhang Xiu to General who Raises Might.[2]
Fighting for Cao Cao and Death
Zhang Xiu fought in the Battle of Guandu in Spring 200, where his fighting skills helped Cao Cao out. For this, he became General who Defeats the Qiang.[2]
He followed Cao Cao to defeat Yuan Tan at Nanpo in Spring 205, where his service was acknowledged by an increase of 2,000 households to his marquisdom.[2][a]
During Autumn 207, while following Cao Cao to Liucheng in order to fight the Wuhuan, he perished along the way.[2][13]
Cao Pi Anecdote
According to the Weilüe, an angry Cao Pi said to Zhang Xiu,
"Sir, you killed my elder brother! How can you bear to have the face to look at others!"
Zhang Xiu allegedly committed suicide afterwards in fear. However, this is likely hearsay.[14]
Family
Zhang Xiu had the aforementioned daughter as well as a son, Zhang Quan. Zhang Quan succeeded Zhang Xiu as Marquis of Xuanwei, only to associate with Wei Feng and his minor rebellion. He was executed and the title of Marquis of Xuanwei abolished.[10]
