SUBJECT: Lemon Maid 🍋
Our subject matter for this contest is a girl who is bold and at times even a bit sour. She is hard to ignore and definitely has a brash personality but works well with most others. She works within the Kingdom's castle as a housekeeper but takes her job quite seriously. The challenge is to create a Lemon Maid character as if you were either a concept artist/illustrator working at a animation studio in today's day and age. We are looking for either a finished concept art piece or a full illustration showing off the character. We are leaving the personality up you as the artist and we love seeing a characters perceived personality in what they wear, the stance, their colors, everything you can include. So have fun with this one and push yourself to create a "sweet" looking lemon drop character!
For this contest, we are looking for you to explore character design, color combinations, and overall presence. There should be a memorable "look" to the final submission that can capture any viewers attention and give you an idea of who that character is. Your creativity is what we are looking for most, so go wild and have fun with a character design that is as equally compelling as it was to create! We are looking for bold and with the color rind of the lemon, that bright yellow should definitely make a statement!
The JUDGES
To give more weight to the contest, I have enlisted some Zesty good artists as guest judges to give insight when choosing their top choices for the golden award!
Tim Von Rueden (vonn) - I’ve been doing more traditional work recently and love exploring contrast with subtle shading. I have been teaching for 5 years with CG Cookie and am looking forward to seeing the entries on this one!
Gawki - She has a keen eye for color and bold design. Ki has a imaginative nature to her work and is reflected in the color choices and characters she creates!
Sean Price - Coming from a tattoo background, Sean understands the importance of contrast and flow within a composition. Also known as the swoop master.
Jonathan Hamilton - A master of ambient occlusion shadows, Jonathan (Tsuaii) is a phenomenal rendering artist and creates soft yet strong final pieces that always leave an impression. You can watch his tutorial that he did with us on Painting with Ambient Occlusion.
Sycra - As a teacher, he is constantly challenging others to learn and has grown to the great artist he is today because of it. He has a strong sense of shape language and I recommend checking out his videos!
Sketchgeek (Tyler Johnson) - Tyler is a trained caricature artist and professional freelancer having done countless work within the Board Game industry. He has a strong sense of shape and design and will be looking at some great silhouettes for the character submissions!
KiKissh - KiKi is another new judge this time around and has strong bold lined characters full of personality and shape language. They make expressions look effortless and has a keen eye for creating poses that are full of life.
