Sung to the tune of “The Boxer” by Simon & Garfunkel
I am just an orphan And my story’s often told, I have gambled my existence On Alaundo's mumbo-jumbo, Such are prophecies. All lies at best, Still, a man hears what he wants to hear And disregards the rest.
When I fled my home In Candlekeep...

prisma's eldritch blast ⚡
Tumblr media
thinking fondly of my dnd candlekeep party. i can't wait to play with them again! this is our warlock, prisma, casting a nat 20 eldritch blast on a flying sword. she killed it instantly and i felt like that moment was important to illustrate hehe
the folks at ko-fi got to see early versions of this! thank you to ate emily, ate rachel, and jo!
id in the alt text and under the cut.
id: a digital illustration of prisma casting an eldritch blast at a flying sword, while willow shields her face. prisma is a small yuan-ti/changeling with purple skin and hair, wearing purple robes with star embroidery. she is floating in the air as a bolt of purple lightning blasts from her hand. it splits across the left side of the illustration and through a grey sword flying through the air. before the sword, willow puts her arms up to cover her face. willow is a longtooth shifter with brown skin and ginger hair with a white streak, up in a ponytail and in two small braids in front of her ears. she is wearing small white gloves, a pink half-cape, and a purple dress. her eyes are covered, but her fangs are visible in her grimacing mouth. id ends.

I’ve been getting into DND and other tabletop-style RP games lately, and wanted to share some of my art from this period.
First up is Cricket. He was one of my first DND characters that I recently retooled for a new campaign. He’s always been a cleric, but never a very good one. Worst guy you know makes himself indispensable by becoming the party healer, etc. In his first iteration, I distributed his stats abysmally, dumping everything into Dex and Cha because he’s less an acolyte and more a conman. These days, he’s still got terrible stat distribution, but now that he’s a Wereraven, he’s at least got a respectable Con modifier.

Yesterday I ran "The Price of Beauty" from Candlekeep Mysteries and gotta say, I quite like it. Granted, I changed somethings so it'd work better for my group (Made the 3 attendants into men) and I feel like a lot of it would not go as it did with a more experienced group, the group I was running it for was like entirely new to DND, but it was a fucking blast! And also my longest session ever, it somehow went on for 8 hours!

What The Fuck, Candlekeep?
The level 3 mystery, Book of the Raven, has some really horrible ableism at the centre of it’s plot. I’ve seen reviews saying it’s a bad oneshot, but nothing I found mentioned ableism and I have to address this.
As soon as this character was first mentioned, I was uncomfortable. And it got worse and worse the more I read and reread it.
Specific details under the cut (big tw for ableism, tw child death, spoilers for the oneshot)
The players are exploring a chalet, and learning about the people who once lived there, a baron and baroness and their two daughters. The daughters are first mentioned in the description of the graveyard, where we learn that they were called Sylphene and Heluthe, and died aged six and nine respectively. Heluthe’s headstone reads “our pride and joy, gone too soon.” Sylphene’s says “beloved daughter, may she find peace at last,” and already I was finding it odd that the one who lived longer is the one that said “gone too soon”.
And then it describes what you find if you dig up the graves. Sylphene’s “skeleton shows signs of hideous deformity.” This is where I really started to go What The Fuck. At this point, me and my friend were both wondering if it was describing cause of death, because it was hard to believe that anyone would describe physical differences like that. But no.
And it gets worse. In another room you can find the baroness’s diary, which contains information on her experience at the chalet, and “the tribulations of her daughters, whom she adored.” Here’s the paragraph about Sylphene. Prepare yourself.
“Sylphene, the couple’s firstborn daughter, was bedridden, having been born with terrible physical deformities. The baroness was glad that Sylphene could be housed in the chalet, to keep her far from the public’s eye. A nursemaid was hired to watch over the child when the baroness was away. The baroness describes Sylphene’s death at the age of six as “merciful”, and there’s some indication that the baroness had a hand in it”
And we’re still not done.
The main purpose of the oneshot is for the players to find a gateway to the Shadowfell. Sylphene was a “tortured soul” so her grave became a shadow crossing.
To use the crossing, the players have to dig up her grave.
I don’t even know what to say at this point, it’s all so not ok in so many ways.
Candlekeep was published in 2021.
tl/dr: they describe a child as “hideously deformed”, say she’s better off dead, and then make the players dig up her grave.

Sometimes I remember that the private bathhouse for the MONKS at the library MONASTERY is literally called the Warmwet and I wonder what gay person, or deeply oblivious straight person made that call, and all the people on the creative team who were like “yeah that sounds normal”

So in this latest installment of Valiant plays Baldur's Gate, Clarell the half-elf got to find out that she is both the product of sexual assault by Bhaal the god of murder and that her foster father banged her mom. Both disturb her on some visceral level but not as much as the thought that perhaps all the Bhaalspawn may have killed their mothers in childbirth if her birth was at all indicative of how Bhaalspawn are born. And now she gets to have some nice character development worthy guilt. The shit this girl has to go through I swear.

promise ✨
Tumblr media
meet angelus! he’s prisma’s assistant, and he doesn’t like fairies. this is fantine promising to stop bullying him for not knowing how to read, because truth be told he was this close to throwing faer off the ship to baldur’s gate. promises are a Big Deal to fantine, as a fairy. in fact at this point in the story there's a promise fae isn't keeping that is making faer very uncomfortable….
the folks at ko-fi got to see early versions of this! thank you to ate emily, ate rachel, and jo 💕
id in the alt text and under the cut.
digital illustration of fantine and angelus, looking at each other while fantine has faer fingers crossed. angelus is a tall goliath barbarian with dark brown skin. his dark locs are tied up in a ponytail. he is wearing a bright pink leather harness that crosses over his chest and pink short shorts. he has tribal tattoos on his chest and arms, a necklace made of teeth and beads around his neck, a goatee, and a thin, twirly moustache. he is holding a large baguette. his expression is displeased. fantine is a small fairy bard with brown skin and fluffy brown hair done up in pigtails, secured with grey butterfly hair ties. fae is wearing evil eye earrings, a red half-cape, and a green dress with long sleeves. a sparkle of magic hangs over faer head. faer index and middle fingers are crossed, and fae is looking up at angelus with a nervous smile. id: digital illustration of fantine and angelus, looking at each other while fantine has faer fingers crossed. angelus is a tall goliath barbarian with dark brown skin. his dark locs are tied up in a ponytail. he is wearing a bright pink leather harness that crosses over his chest and pink short shorts. he has tribal tattoos on his chest and arms, a necklace made of teeth and beads around his neck, a goatee, and a thin, twirly moustache. he is holding a large baguette. his expression is displeased. fantine is a small fairy bard with brown skin and fluffy brown hair done up in pigtails, secured with grey butterfly hair ties. fae is wearing evil eye earrings, a red half-cape, and a green dress with long sleeves. a sparkle of magic hangs over faer head. faer index and middle fingers are crossed, and fae is looking up at angelus with a nervous smile. id ends.

Is summer the best time of year to stock up on non-holiday-scented scented candles?
It is generally not a good time for the vast majority of scented candles.
Scented candles tend to have high melting points. This means that the waxes are in a constant state of high temperature at all times and so are more likely to be burnt off if they are not protected from overheating. For non-scented candles, this may not be a big problem, since they do not have scent, but for a scented candle, it's a major concern. The wax for a standard 100% soy blend candle melts at about 130 C, and some fancy ones can even get up to 150 C. (This website is an interesting source on how different blends of unscented waxes fare at different temperatures.)
Scented candles also have a lot of wax "bound up" in the scent itself. This means that there are a lot of complex chemical reactions taking place that will take time to finish. This means the wax can burn off quickly, leaving behind the aroma of the scent.
For this reason, scented candles that smell like holidays are not a good idea. They all have complex chemical reactions that will take a while to get started, so if you don't burn them off while they're still fresh, the scent is not going to last. If you don't burn them off right away, you may end up smelling your house or your clothes or your hair or your skin. For more information on all the holiday scented candles available, check this website.
Another consideration is that scented candles are less likely to melt during a power outage, because they are usually made with waxes that are not very volatile.
The only reason to bother stocking up on scented candles during the peak of the holiday season is if you are willing to spend some extra money. Scented candles aren't a bad buy at retail, but they're only worthwhile if you plan to give or sell a candle as a gift, because only scentless, unscented candles are good for this purpose.
