The renters market right now is insane. (Like 5000 sometimes 7000 dollars a month for RENT) I've managed to find a place but he refuses to go lower than 3000 down but the rent is doable with my income. But I have been on medical leave since early February due to seizure like activity while I was working. I still have my job and should be returning in April from medical leave. What’s the greatest challenge when it comes to working on cars? Much as it is with any other hobby: space. Cars are really big, and even though houses also are, those houses are designed for the old-fashioned belief that families will only have a mere 2-4 cars. Keep in mind: that number’s for the whole family, not for each member. I know, right?
So, the obvious answer: just let the cars flow out of the garage. Keep the nice ones under cover, and then put everything else in the driveway. When the driveway fills up, park ‘em in the street. When the street fills up or the neighbours start opening fire on sight, park ‘em in the alley, or on another street where they don’t get quite so jumpy. Bribe a bylaw officer to tell you when someone calls them in. Walk around the neighbourhood every night, pop the cars in neutral, and roll them back and forth a few feet so it looks like the car left and came back and is therefore not the hated slur of “abandoned.” Kindergarten stuff.
Of course, this means that you are spending a lot of your time and money just possessing cars. And storing them in public view means a lot of threats: raccoons, insurance lobbyists, and teenage hubcap thieves. So is the correct answer to get rid of the cars that you’re not actively using, or at least the ones that don’t run? No. With that kind of prejudice, how are you supposed to collect a whole shitload of useless cars?
My answer: park ‘em at uninhabited houses. Lots of these houses have been cropping up now that the mysterious oligarchs who own them keep being introduced to gravity in exotic foreign countries. When you park your car there, it’s on private property, so Johnny Law can’t get involved even if there’s no registration or insurance. If you’ve ever had trouble selling a car, you can leave it on the property and it will get included into the foreclosure proceedings, along with whatever junk parts you want to fill it up with (I recommend mouse-chewed seats and carpets.) And teens with criminal intent will stay away, because a creepy old house is the ideal place for smooching and/or getting murdered by a dude in a hockey mask. The hockey mask industry could use the money; it’s been a tough year. Everyone wins.

My brother works in storage and tells me about the loads of stuff people abandon. It seems like a fascinating thing to see what people held onto for a long time and then choose not to keep. Do you save all sorts of neat stuff or limit yourself to slides, photos, etc.? I feel like I'd lose my mind picking out cool stuff to buy but then just end up with storage units to hold it all, thus perpetuating the cycle.
I am horrible about this. If something's exceptionally neat, I have to have it. Goodwill Outlet has aided my disease. I might try to limit myself to this or that, but my collections keep growing... I'm just yardsailing along looking for old magazines, hoping there are slides in that boxed carousel in that soup box under the next table, and suddenly I become a collector of View-Masters or staplers. (and yes, I do have a storage locker for my stuff, but that's because I currently live in a 14x14 bedroom that isn't my own).
Yeah, about what people keep or abandon, let me tell you a story: I used to live down the street from this house that it was clear had been abandoned. The real kicker was the paperwork from the court blue-taped to the front door about the house being in foreclosure... seems the people living there bailed in the middle of the night in March, it took until May or June for the mortgage company to catch up with this fact, and the house was going up for auction on July 21. (And on July 24, a Coldwell Banker for-sale sign appeared out front. I presume someone bought it in October, since it's not like the bank was going to spend anything to make it appealing or habitable!) I walked around the house to have a look, and it seems that after they abandoned the place they realized "oh hey, we forgot ____" and broke in through a bedroom window, carted off with whatever, and left the back door unlocked in case they thought of anything else. :) So of course I wander in and had a gander. Did I mention they left suddenly? The kitchen was mostly intact contentwise, so apparently where they are they didn't need pots and pans. The beds had been removed but the dressers were there, hanging open. There was a literal pile of fifty years' of people's lives in the livingroom, including photo albums and memories. This place was amazing in the quantity of "why wouldn't you take that if you were leaving?" stuff, but it was clear there was plenty of values things they were able to get in the truck and skedaddled with. I grabbed a milk crate I found in a bedroom and loaded it up with photo albums and maybe a few other things, bungeed it to my ten-speed (it had a rack, heh), and got out of there, locking the back door on my way for grins. There's so much I could have taken for myself or resale but nope, others should happen upon the bounty the same way I had who might need it more. Here's one of the 126-film photo prints from that house; it’s ridiculous what you can figure out about people from what they leave behind:

It's hard wanting EVERYTHING and my room is getting kinda filled with things I need to sell or find a place for, but I am able to tell myself "no, I don't need that, I'll just take a picture of it" most of the time. Unless it's pictures. Then I take those. :)
