Please, do rant about how chainsaw man is a masterpiece and it's going to have an impact on modern shounen
thank you so much for prompting me to talk about this. i have so much to say about it. im about to write an essay. manga spoilers are a given but here's the warning just in case.
firstly, fujimoto has such a strong grasp of visual storytelling. i know that this seems like a pretty baseline statement for a mangaka but i genuinely think his grasp on it in particular is spectacular. he works so much into his panels and even the placing of the characters in the frame is important.
it's a really obvious element of his work and it's both plot-driven and comedically driven, which makes it all the more compelling. oftentimes in chainsaw man, comedic scenes are indicative of a greater power hierarchy present within interactions (especially with regards to denji and makima).
makima plays a maternal role in the story and is, undoubtedly, a character fujimoto took a lot of care in writing and drawing. she's always in positions of power and almost always the focal point of panels and scenes she's present in. her sexuality as a woman is used as a weapon knowingly and she's presented as both mother, lover, and leader to denji and within the art of the series (which serves to highlight denji's deep-seated need for affection of all forms).
in fact, a lot of her positioning in the series is very maternal. even when she tears pochita from chainsaw man's chest, she is cradling his head as a mother would a babe. her chains come from her womb and diaphragm, often thought to be the location of the solar plexus chakra which dictates personality, ego, identity, personal freedom, choice, and authenticity. which is fitting considering her position as the control devil and her attempt to rob denji of his personhood. (honestly i could go on about makima and motherhood forever. i saw a tiktok about it a little while ago and ended up diving down a rabbit hole of thought).
it's also really interesting to me that denji serves as both comedic relief and a tragic character, as well as being the main protagonist of his story. it's not unheard of, but it is unique and it makes the story stand out within the shonen genre (naruto did something similar but with an entirely different message and theme). it makes denji compelling and incredibly human.
that trope within itself is nothing new. it's somewhat common. however, what I've noticed about chainsaw man is that denji's comedic relief is almost always indicative of a greater theme. his motivations being purely sexual and romantic are, originally, presented as a comedic aspect of the series meant to introduce you to the type of person denji is. however, after reading the series, it quickly becomes an ominous indication of his ability to be easily manipulated, as well as the extortion of those qualities that lead to his (and makima's) eventual downfall and the climax of the story.
a lot of popular shonen media contains some levels of deeper analysis, but chainsaw man does it in a way in which the plot is actively dependent on that further analysis. i think csm kind of took the shonen genre and introduced a deeper level of thought to it I've only seen in a few other examples (jjk being one of them) and i think that what will come out of it is shonen manga with deeper symbolism and heavier themes.
i think chainsaw man's popularity in particular is gonna end up contributing to a greater shift in shonen and action manga towards more deliberate placement of themes and underlying messages.
that's not to say that other shonen mangas LACK those underlying messages, but i am saying that chainsaw man's popularity is largely OWED to that when it is usually the other way around. and chainsaw man, even in the first week of its anime release, is already HUGELY popular for those reasons.
i think that sometimes there is a belief with popular shonen animanga (and action media in general) that in order for it to be popular, you need these cash-grab scenes and characters. it seems to me that a lot of shonen maintains this idea of serving the palpable and blatantly obvious first and the darker second, whereas chainsaw man absolutely does NOT do that. chainsaw man puts the ugly (and somewhat comedic) aspect of tragedy in your face and then asks you to analyze it to find something even uglier and more meaningful underneath, which is a breath of fresh air in the shonen genre to me.
so all this to say: i think that chainsaw man's popularity is gonna lead to a greater shift in the shonen genre that brings analyzable media and themes to the forefront of what's considered "marketable". im really excited to see the works that come after this and what inspiration they take from it.
i realize that im not saying anything new about chainsaw man. all of these things have probably been said before and in greater detail, but from my perspective (as someone who really values composition in manga panels) this is how i see it. and NONE of this is to say that other shonen genres lack this deep of messaging. chainsaw man is, however, where i have noticed it the most of the shonen i have read.

if horikoshi wanted to kill someone he should’ve made it ENDEAVOR, not bakugo or any of the kids for that matter. or aizawa, everyone else is on the table but he needs to start with endeavor
you’re so right for saying this. i get that endeavor is having his redemption arc but i really... i don’t think there is redemption to be found in what he did (nor do i give a fuck). i think he can change as a person but redemption is out of the question.
and im not saying that means he HAS to die... but if it was anyone it should have been him. ur right for saying that.
like katsuki already received retribution for his actions in a way that was fitting for his actions. ppl love to talk abt the “swam dive off the roof” incident but if we think about what he’s done to atone since then.. he’s received his karmic narrative retribution. by literally... throwing himself in front of what appeared to be a death blow meant for the boy he originally said that to. it is equal retribution in all senses of the term.
katsuki bullied izuku and told him to die > katsuki doesn’t acknowledge his wrong doings > katsuki faces his inferority complex in regards to izuku > katsuki is willing and takes STEPS to die for him > katsuki apologizes.
so yeah... ur right... from a narrative standpoint it should NOT have been bakugou. at this point i feel like it’s making a whole lot of shit happen to him that doesn’t make sense for his character arc, nor does it make sense for the actual structure of the story which tends to follow a general “bad action > retribution > redemption” arc. it just seems like using it as a shock factor or fear factor in order to further the story... which would make sense if it were ANYONE else. character deaths to further another character’s development are common in writing. they did it with nighteye. but i think the fundamental difference is that it just doesn’t do katsuki justice. it really doesn’t.

on one hand im hoping now with jjk season 2 people will FINALLY stop mischaracterizing gojo and see that’s he’s more than just a “manchild womanizer”. and on the other hand im not ready to see my timeline flood with just toji. its already bad enough with them and his manga panels but there’s also the problem with people not caring about his character either and only seeing a “dilf”
it’s gonna be a time for sure. see im honestly just afraid for the violent mischaracterization that will ensue AFTER the star vessel arc. i am truly and deeply afraid. I’m afraid for when people will start saying with their whole chest that gojo satoru is evil and a sadist who thinks he is god. I’ll scream.
I’m ALREADY tired of the toji dilf speak!!!! I’m not emotionally prepared to be bombarded with images of him. like yes he is sexy but I just…. we already went through this is feel like. history repeats itself. also he’s so plot important and his lore in particular is so cool im sad that he’s def gonna be reduced even further than he already has been

is it just me or is it irritating that people hate on himeno for taking denji home, yet stay silent about makima, as if making your teenage employee grab your boob isn’t gross as hell (amongst other things she’s done). i wish people would talk about her behavior more in the fandom overall. i feel like people don’t acknowledge it as much because a good amount of the fandom is only looking to hyper-sexualize makima, which also rubs me the wrong way. i hope what i’m saying makes sense since i’m bad at articulating
honesssttlllyyy yeah this makes absolute sense. i think that not talking abt makima the same way we talk abt himeno is like... missing a crucial part of what csm is about beneath the surface. like this is a manga about manipulation and control. there is a REASON both makima and himeno are older than denji and in positions of power over him while ALSO pursuing him sexually (whether out of a need to 1-up others or manipulation).
to look at makima and say that their age and power difference isn’t as important or as negative in a sexual context as himeno’s is (i think) a vast misunderstanding of the story. like they BOTH are taking advantage of him because they have power over him. himeno because she clearly has a complex about makima, and makima because she aims to control the chainsaw devil.
i have a lot of conflicting thoughts abt this particular part of the story, but i find it really difficult to organize them. mostly because i still think, despite her actions, himeno is largely painted as a hero and martyr within the story while makima is the overall antagonist. i actually think it’s quite interesting the way the fandom has taken those two characters and their relatively similar actions and attributed the villainy to himeno and the "heroism” to makima. i think this can largely be attributed to the fandoms general preferences, but i also think it can be attributed to the way the characters are written. himeno remains human to the viewers and denji and is therefore fallible, where as makima (even before she is revealed to be the control devil) feels largely inhuman and above fallibility.
but i’m getting off track. the moral of the story is that yes, i def think you are right. there’s a reason both of those characters pursue denji sexually and are both older than him and in a position of power over him. it’s literally ALL about control and manipulation.
and it’s DEFINITELY frustrating to see makima hyper-sexualized for the same actions because she is “hotter” to the overall fandom. it’s very frustrating to see.
also... i have WAYYY TOO MANY THOUGHTS ABT THIS PARTICULAR VEIN OF CSM ANALYSIS. like... i cannot gather my thoughts for shit so i APOLOGIZE if this is incoherent or means/says absolutely nothing. i have that thing where u have a lot of thoughts u wanna get across but you can’t formulate them properly and it makes me want to CLAW MY CHEST OPEN.

i feel like a lot of people water down satosugu and took that line “my six eyes tell me you’re geto suguru by my soul knows otherwise” and ran with it just to ship it and ignore how actually important they were to each other. esp THOSE certain women who you can tell fetishize mlm seeing that panel and they’re just like “omg they were in love” “gay!” like bro…
i literally seen someone get attacked a while back for saying they shipped satosugu platonically and not romantically. they talked about how geto was important to gojo’s character, they’re platonic soulmates, and how it affected gojo more than meets the eye. In the comments people were telling them “you clearly don’t understand the manga then” “they were gay get over it” like how do you water down a character’s importance to another’s THAT BAD? i try not to point fingers its mainly a certain demographic of people doing it too
i agree with most of this except for the concept of seeing them as romantic meaning that it’s watered down. i don’t think this is necessarily what you’re saying, but i don’t think romantically shipping them is watering-down their characters or their importance. i def see what you’re saying with like.. certain groups of people.. but i also think that reading them as romantic is a completely valid way of looking at satosugu.
i think there’s this idea that romance and romantic attachment is inherently less important than platonic (which is seen as “serious”). i could get into how i think it’s because romance is commonly tied to femininity but that’s an entirely separate conversation and a super long one 😭😭😭 though i hear what you’re saying but i personally think looking at satosugu romantically can be just as powerful and impactful as looking at them platonically.
that being said, it does feel like a lot of that is used purely for shipping purposes, but i don’t think that takes away it’s meaning. yes, it’s an important comment of gojo’s that indicates a deeper level of hurt, grief, and resentment within him, but it is also a REALLY strong indication of gojo and getou’s attachment to each other. i think even reading that as ship content is a really valid and interesting way of looking at it because it IS about his connection to getou. it IS about how much he cares for getou.
though that’s kinda off topic from what you were saying 😭😭😭 i guess all im adding to this is that i think reading satosugu as romantic and reading that moment as indication of a romantic connection doesn’t necessarily water-down their importance... but it IS annoying when it’s done in a way that purely fetishizes queer men rather than acknowledge the importance to their character arcs. i feel u.

Hey I finished reading part one of chainsaw man and like I don’t understand why people call it a masterpiece. Like the first half was great and the revelation of makima was great but afterwards it became messy and the plot just disappeared.
Like really? Makima reasoning of fucking everything up is bc she’s a fan of OG chainsaw man? There’s zero background information about the OG chainsaw man other than what makima said in the manga. Characters with the exception of aki, power, angle, denji aren’t even fleshed out and they just died like that. There were no hints that denji power erased devils existence like NOTHING was fleshed out or informative. The ending was so bland ig, like I was expecting some explanation but no, I received nothing. Chainsaw man is only great when it comes to fights, artsyle, and making people uncomfortable, but the plot wasn’t going anywhere and completely erased itself from existence.
Like people was hyping up the manga so much and I agree the hype was worth it until after makima revelation. I’m the type of person who likes good written plots like attack on titan or cliche shouen plots but not boring like jujutsu kaisen. Of all shouen manga I read I feel like chainsaw man is the only one I don’t feel like continuing. I’m in part 2 now and I don’t feel like forcing myself reading it, waiting for something great to happen or waiting for the PLOT to come back.
Anyways I’m just wondering if you can convince me to continue it.
hmmmmmmmmm while i can see what you're saying, i kinda disagree.
chainsaw man part 1 is exactly that... part 1. im under the assumption that the things we're going to learn about denji and the og chainsaw man will continue to develop as the series goes on, but i can see what you're saying about it not feeling fleshed out. but it's also not over yet.
as for csm being a masterpiece, i personally think that that part comes in with the visual storytelling. fujimoto's art is fantastic at indicating tone and power through the positioning of his characters, as well as putting symbolism within the art itself. i think fujimoto's skill shines through in the way he demonstrates denji being manipulated by the people around him, as well as how he goes about telling denji's perception of love, sex, and human connection. it's a manga about manipulation, set in an alternate universe.
imo, chainsaw man really shines when you read between the lines of what's being presented to you at face value. if you're reading the manga at face value... then you're only seeing one aspect of it. it's really clear that fujimoto put a lot of thought into the interactions his characters have in the manga, as well as how he positions them in the frames themselves. i think this is actually ESPECIALLY true for makima and the way she's portrayed.
also, when it comes to fleshing out characters, i agree that some weren’t fully fleshed out but i also kind of look at it as like... some characters are present to push the narrative forward. sometimes they aren’t fleshed out and that’s totally fine. like while i love the violence fiend, i don’t feel like the plot suffered because we didn’t get his backstory or like... a full character arc for him. he’s a side character, sometimes they aren’t fleshed out. i wanted to see more about kobeni, but i think she’ll come back later and we’ll learn more. the story isn’t over yet, so more information about characters is going to keep coming. it makes sense to me that they haven’t laid everything out already... bc that’s the continuation of the plot lol
fact is though, if you didn't like it, then it's probably just not the manga for you and that's totally fine. you don't have to like the story the way i do or even agree with me that it's a masterpiece. it's media, everyone is going to read into it differently. i just happen to think it's worth looking at further than face value because when i read it that way, it completely changed the way i see the manga.
though i am going to say... if you don't like jujutsu kaisen... you probably will not like chainsaw man. they're very similar series and fall into a super similar genre. jjk functions the same way, with its characters and stories having more depth (imo) than just what's being presented at face value. i happen to find jjk to be very interesting and well-written (aside from the way it treats its female characters on occasion) and that's probably why i like chainsaw man as much as i do. i enjoy media analysis and those two series happen to be ones that benefit GREATLY from it and have a lot to unpack.
i think you and i just happen to have differing opinions about the series we enjoy bc while i love aot, i think both jjk and chainsaw man have more coherent plots (though neither of them are finished yet). that's not to say i don't like aot and think it's good, i just think that csm and jjk are better.
anyway, i don't think i can convince you to like or continue csm if you don't already like it 😭😭😭 especially if you don't like jjk (since they're p much the same genre)

⚠️csm spoilers⚠️
i wish i could agree with you about chainsaw man being a masterpiece but i feel like the only people who can say that are the ones who were able to read it through without spoilers😭. They’re the only people who’re able to truly appreciate and praise csm and fujimoto’s work on it. That statement’s true don’t get me wrong but I can’t like wholeheartedly believe that yk? When you try to read it having already been told what happens, you get to the end and it’s like “oh… so this is what everyone’s hyped this up for…. kay moving on” . Chainsaw man is good but personally not as good as everyone said it would be, I had to force myself through every chapter bc i wanted to see why it was named the best new gen manga. If I hadn’t been told “everyone but denji dies” before I started it, I’d probably agree with you
i have no idea what this has to do with the actual quality of the storytelling 😭😭😭 im so sorry i had a whole response typed up but i genuinely just... im lost.

no no you’re right and that’s what i was trying to get at but i guess i worded it weird😭 i like satosugu both platonic and romantic but most that look at it romantic ONLY look at it that way and only like the ship for that purpose. so like if someone says they don’t like the ship or sees it as just friends then they’re told they “didn’t understand the manga” which is just annoying
LOL no no i understood what u meant!! i just got reminded of something while i was reading it and wanted to talk abt it as well bc it was on subject.
i think of satosugu as both depending on how im looking at them / how im reading into the text. but it DEFINITELY irritates me when people boil their relationship down into something that feels really surface level, rather than acknowledging their individual effects on the other. feels super SUPER fetish-y.
it also feels fetish-y when people claim that the ONLY way to look at them is as romantic. especially since jjk (and gojo SPECIFICALLY) is so multi-faceted and has SO MANY different ways of reading into the story and its characters. feels like it's not just doing getou and gojo a disservice, but the entire series. ya know?

with mha season 6 starting tomorrow, what aare you most excited to see? like fights, characters, a certain scene
ya know... this is gonna sound absolutely insane but i actually... am not overly excited for the season 6 premiere. after reading the manga, i realized i like like manga version of bnha MUCH better than the anime to the point that im a little worried that it won't do the story justice.
though if i had to say anything, i'd honestly just say that the battle when the heroes fight gigantomachia, as well as twice and hawks having their... moment... yk?
though if i'm being fr... i've had such aggressive chainsaw man tunnel vision... it's the only thing im thinking about LMFAOOO
im also excited for bnha to take on a darker/more serious tone in general, esp since the manga RLY does change in tone from this point on, yk? im also not sure if it's gonna be in this season but im READY to see lady nagnant FR

omg can we talk about gojo’s past for a sec bc it feels like the little insight they gave us during his past arc was pretty much nothing, like they gave us crumbs of bread. I’ve been meaning to chat abt jjk for a hot minute bc gojo’s backstory bothers me SO BAD bc i dont know how he actually came to be nor why he’s a single man clan. “when gojo was born the balance in the world tilted” okay what hospital was he born in so i can look through medical records, talk to the doctor that was there that day, something, anything. like where are his parents now? why doesnt he have any siblings? what happened to them yk? it seems like everyone just kinda brushed that over and don’t talk abt it🫤
i have a theory on why his parents arent in the picture but i feel like it’s probably dumb to even mention💀
PFTTT pls talking about gojo with me is like opening an enormous can of worms u cannot even begin to fathom the depths of. he is so... i have so so many thoughts abt him.
i gonna put this below a cut bc it is LONG and contains jjk manga spoilers
anyway, gege never rly did explain what happened to the rest of the gojo clan, nor how gojo came to be the only living member of it. i think that they were slaughtered, though i'm not sure how. the most likely theory for this is that they died because their limitless technique was powerful and other jujutsu families were threatened by that power. it makes sense, especially since limitless is a technique that is passed down within the clan and belongs to the gojo clan only.
i also think it's likely that people knew that the birth of the six eyes holder, as well as a limitless technique user, would alter the balance of the world, so the gojo clan was killed off in an attempt to avoid the birth of another user like that. essentially, a retaliation for the sole purpose of keeping gojo satoru from being born (take this in context with the fact that the elders of the jujutsu world had been planning to/wanting to seal gojo for a very long time).
that being said, i am always especially intrigued by gojo being the reason the jujutsu world's balance was altered. i think that its a fantastic way to describe just how rigid the power system is, as well as highlight how important satoru is when it comes to the actual lore of the jujutsu kaisen world.
i also think it is incredible foreshadowing bc if there is one thing we know about nature, it is that nature always corrects itself. gojo satoru altered the power system of the very world he existed in and as a result, spurred all curses to become stronger as well. so i don't think it's far-fetched to say that the gojo clan may have been wiped out by jujutsu society itself (as in, those in charge) to prevent his birth altogether and avoid another "age of the six eyes" (referring to someone who uses both the six eyes and limitless technique) in which all curses and sorcerers see their power raised to levels that only exist when a holder of limitless and six eyes exists.
along this same vein of theory, i also think it's likely that kenjaku attempted to wipe out the gojo clan in an attempt to keep another six eyes from being born and preventing his plans (whether it was him directly or him through a surrogate). since the six eyes, master tengen, and the star plasma vessel are linked by fate. it seems likely that kenjaku would try and stop that connection by preventing the birth of another six eyes by eliminating (or attempting to eliminate) the entire clan.
however, fate is unavoidable and inevitable. gojo satoru, destined by fate to be a holder of the six eyes, is an unavoidable force. because he is linked to the jujutsu world by fate, his birth was similarly unavoidable and i don't think it's too unlikely to assume that gojo was born by a miracle that somehow allowed the survival of his mother long enough for him to be born.
i also think that gojo is the LAST of the six eyes to be tied in this particular way because of the birth of toji fushigurou, but i digress.
anyway, those are my thoughts on THAT.

cal I’ve been fighting for my life defending bakugo on tiktok since 364 came out🥲. i said they were hypocritical a few hours ago to one bc they were just screaming “these kids don’t deserve to die in this war that wasnt meant for them” but it suddenly doesnt apply to bkg; they haven’t responded in a while and im scared they might be tracking my IP address 🧍‍♀️
no bc... it's crazy and insane. both the direction the story is going and also the current fans on tiktok. i literally skip videos abt it now because my fragile heart can only take so much before i physically jump through the screen and rip throats out with my teeth.
i really hope they aren't TRACKING YOUR IP ADDRESS?? please that's HORRIFYING.

its the fact that aki showed up asking for denji but didnt even realize what he was doinggg😭 and he was SMILING. thats the prt that gets me bc i think he really didnt even know. such a clever thing on fujimoto’s part but easily the most sad way I’ve seen someone die, to die like that and not even be aware??☹️
right?? like he was so happy. it’s really the happiness in death that made me :( because there is something so absolutely tragic about that. about the fact that he’d found a reason to live but was still made to be oblivious in death.
the concept of ignorance being bliss for aki and how he was never given that choice. his family was killed, he was forced to reckon the existence of devils, and called to a greater purpose of devil hunting. and it’s all because he was never given the chance to remain ignorant to that life path. then in death, when he finally wants to keep living, he’s ignorant again. and it’s bliss. except this time his ignorance means (once again) leaving the people he loves behind.
bye. ill cry.

i cannot tell you how many accounts on tiktok I’ve blocked since them mha leaks came out. the way they’re that excited over a child’s death?? personally i dont think he’s dead but even if he is, why are yall holding hands and jumping for joy..
and they completely ignore ALL of his character development over something that he said in the first episode when even deku himself forgives bakugo and still considers him a friend. idc i will always be ten toes behind him
no i just.. like yes ppl enjoy media in their own way but it's.. it's only okay when it's my way /j. like i cannot FATHOM someone looking at katsuki where he is NOW in the manga character-wise and being like "ah yes... he DESERVES IT."
like... are you insane??? in a legal sense??
