#HARPERSMOVIECOLLECTION
2023
I watched Lurking Fear (1994)
This movie bills one of it's main actresses wrong. Her name is Ashley Laurence, but is Ashley Lauren in the credits. That should tell you something about this Full Moon Production.
(I watched this after watching something I hated and very late at night, so maybe I was over enthusiastic writing this review, but I had fun)
People trapped in a church fend off ghouls in a small town graveyard in this low budget film loosely based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft.
C. Courtney Joyner is a director of several Full Moon films. Sequels to several of their franchises mostly. He's also a writer of cowboy novels. It doesn't really matter, he's not a great director, but he's making a decently fun bit of "so bad it's good" stuff here.
This movie has Jeffrey Combs, who may be the greatest actor to ever grace B-films. No matter how bad the film, Combs gives it his all and makes at least his scenes worth watching.
Ashley Laurence, of Hellraiser 1 and 2, is also here and pulling the hot commando thing off pretty well. It's super 1990's and I find it hot. Sue me.
Anyway, with all this and a few solid supporting actors working their way through awful dialogue alongside some other mediocre supporting actors, there's a bit of shine coming off this turd. And, I say turd with the utmost respect.
Digging through the Full Moon back catalog of films can be a daunting task. Let's just say some of their offerings are "so bad, they're just plain bad". Full Moon Productions is at their best when they are making movies that don't take themselves too seriously and which put their budgets into practical effects and fake blood. Lurking Fear does this while giving us likeable, if very one dimensional, characters. It doesn't waste it's small budget either. Very few locations are used and there are very few wasted moments. In a film that only spans an hour and seventeen minutes, there's not much time to waste.
This brings me to a pretty big point I wanna make. If you're making a low budget horror there's a formula you should stick to that makes it easier and more fun. Keep the story and the scope small and the cast and characters big. Trap a bunch of people in one place and send monsters after them and I'll watch. John Carpenter did it, Tales From The Crypt did it, From Dusk Till Dawn did it, All three of Romero's Dead movies did it. It keeps characters from having to make stupid decisions to get themselves in danger and it keeps the money focused on the horror stuff.
Lurking Fear is by no means amazing, but it's fun and funny and great for a bad movie night. Noticing the ways they cut corners to save money is part of the enjoyment and that's the way a good/bad movie should be.
There's hilarious female mud wrestling, a monster that talks super funny, a pointless narration, cheesy gore effects, and more. If you haven't sat down to a shiny turd in a while, I'd suggest this.

RESTORED! REJUVENATED! REBORN! By the end of the 1960s the boom in Old World gothic horror had begun to wane in the face of present day terrors like the Vietnam war. In response, American filmmakers brought horror out of the past and into the present, and the classic movie monsters packed their bags and headed for the New World. Count Yorga, Vampire was among the first to successfully transpose the classic vampire, cloak and all, to a modern day setting as the Count - played unforgettably by Robert Quarry - arrives in the United States and settles in a Southern California mansion with his mysterious "brides". A drive-in favourite from the moment it was released, a sequel soon followed. The Return of Count Yorga ups the ante and sees the sardonic Count on the streets of San Francisco, his sights set on an orphanage as a potential source of sustenance. Director Bob Kelljan (Scream Blacula Scream) delivers a one-two punch of classic cult cinema mixing chills, thrills, style, and suspense with a knowing wit that revels in the genre trappings. Presented in all new restorations by Arrow Films from new scans of the original camera negative, The Count Yorga Collection is a full blooded feast to die for!

Happy birthday to Lurking Fear, released today (on video) in 1994! Fun fact I learned from watching the film with commentary (by director C Courtney Joyner): Jeff broke a tooth on set and had to fix it with candle wax until he could get to a dentist.

Class of 1999 (1990)
"Yes, but these androids were supposed to educate the students."
"Battle droids, Miles, battle droids. Military surplus, marked to be shipped to Central America for the ten-year war. That is, until the DED called. It seemed they were having a little problem in our schools. I said: 'No problem! All we have to do is marry our war machine with the basic educational model'. Wonderful results. You should have seen those Washington assholes, they were amazed. And now we've got a military contract worth billions."
"I see. So they've been waging war with my students."
"Isn't that what all teachers do?"
#class of 1999#mark l. lester#1990#C. Courtney Joyner#Bradley Gregg#traci lind#malcolm mcdowell#stacy keach#Patrick Kilpatrick#pam grier#John P. Ryan#Darren E. Burrows#Joshua John Miller#Sharon Wyatt#James Medina#Jason Oliver Lipsett#Brent David Fraser#Jill Gatsby#Sean Hagerty#Sean Sullivan#Lester's previous Class of 1984 may have been a hot mess‚ but it worked its way up to that. Through gradual escalation of assault between#Teacher and students‚ we see how easily things get out of control and deadly violence erupts (I mean it's slightly more hysterical than#That and it's thinly disguised exploitation film but still). His bizarre scifi sequel? Jettisons any idea of gradual (and indeed any hint#Of brain) in the opening few minutes‚ as acid jazz Ron Swanson rocks up to a troubled inner city school slash warzone with killbot teachers#An unusually fussy and ineffective Malc McDowell can only squirm and shrug as‚ quelle surprise‚ the death drones start savaging the#Naughtier students. Cue much violence‚ some surprisingly nifty FX‚ a lot of high octane nonsense‚ and Pam Grier taking her top off in a#Scarily literal sense. This is absolute grade A 100% certified baloney‚ but it's a hell of a ride too. Apparently it was Stacey Keach's own#Idea to have that bleach blonde look and white contacts‚ which... Stacey‚ man‚ wtf was going on at home? Utter nonsense and as far removed#From reality as the first film‚ except in the opposite direction‚ and with a lot more flamethrowers. Montessori would've been proud
