We went for a relaxing drive yesterday to Surrey, BC. A friend and his wife own a vineyard there, Vinoscenti Vineyards. We enjoyed some great wine, food and the visit! We dropped off some cigars for them to share with guests as well! @2000cigars #2000cigars #2000cigarsdelivery #vinoscentivineyards #bcvineyards #surreybc #buybclocal https://www.instagram.com/p/CSGX01mLcKJ/?utm_medium=tumblr

We like to hit the hills early on a ski day. The snow is less chopped up, and you can enjoy the slopes with more freedom (and fewer people). But of course, this means that we get pretty peckish around mid-morning. Thanks to years of parenting, I don’t leave the house without some snacks. - These locally grown dried whole blueberries from @wildcoastfruitco contain no preservatives, additives or artificial flavours. A touch of non-GMO pure cane sugar adds a wee burst of tart sweetness, hitting the spot until lunch time. #fuelyouradventure #buybclocal #ad http://ift.tt/2iWJlh5

The latest Pod Pack beer I'm tasting is the Wave Walker Helles Bock by Ucluelet Brewing on Vancouver Island. The Pod Pack again is a selection of 4 beers made especially to support the Pacific Salmon Foundation.  One dollar from the sale of every Pod Pack will be donated to the Pacific Salmon Foundation to help their efforts in preserving wild B.C. salmon stocks, a vital food source for the southern resident killer whales.  Who is Wave Walker? Wave Walker (L-88) orca was named since he was first spotted riding the wave from his mother’s slipstream. The 28-year-old orca is now the only living member of the L2 family group. A Helles Bock is a beer typically made in the Spring.  It is generally a bit sweeter, is malty with a light hoppiness.  And has a higher alcohol content. The  Ucluelet Brewing Wave Walker Helles Bock comes in at 6.8% alc, a strong beer.  It has a clear, medium amber colour.  Light sweetness, hops, caramel, light toastiness, and sweet spices on the nose. It is medium-bodied, off-dry with a caramel malty flavour.  Light hoppiness.  Medium-sized bubble but fairly smooth.  Lingering hoppiness bitterness and some saltiness at the very end.  Very easy to drink.   You can buy the Pod Pack, to help support the Pacific Salmon Foundation which supports our orcas and salmon, at this link: https://vibrewing.com/product/podpack2021-4x473ml/ Here is a url with pics and descriptions of our L-pod orcas: https://orcaspirit.com/the-captains-blog/meet-the-whales-of-l-pod-in-2019-from-the-southern-resident-killer-whale-population/ @vibrewing @ucluelet_brewing_co @pacificsalmonfoundation #beer #charity #VancouverIsland #bock #wavewalker #cicerone #buyBClocal  https://www.instagram.com/p/CPmJj_vMY5E/?utm_medium=tumblr

On my way back to Vancouver from my drive around BC, I stopped in Merritt for lunch.  I checked online for recommended restaurants and identified Kekuli Cafe @kekulicafebannock, an indigenous-run restaurant, that uses #bannock (frybread) in many dishes as well as other indigenous foods, such as venison and saskatoon berries.  I had to stop to try their food, and really enjoyed my dish.  Their signage says "Don't Panic...We Have Bannock!" I ordered a Frybread Tipi Venison Taco.  Instead of a taco shell you get the frybread, which is then topped with lettuce, shredded cheese, and salsa, then to top it all off, cooked ground venison.  Lots of flavour and I really like eating it with the frybread instead of a taco shell.  Much more substantial.   They have a wall full of pictures of famous indigenous actors and athletes.  I've included a pic of that for you to view as well.  If you are passing through Merritt, please drop by the cafe.  There are still other dishes I would like to try. #indigenous #indigenouscreators #indigenousinstagram #indigenousentrepeneur #indigenoussmallbiz #nativeowned #nativebusinesses @kekulicafemerritt #buybclocal https://www.instagram.com/p/CVLQqNrJBsN/?utm_medium=tumblr

Today I am visiting the oldest brewery in #Nelson, BC.  The @nelsonbrewingcompany was established in 1991.  It isn't on the main street, Baker St, but about 5 blocks uphill (steep), and you are rewarded with excellent beer and a great view.  I tried their:  - Clever Fox Apricot #Saison - 14 Grahams Per Litre Hazy #IPA - Hooligan Pale #Ale - Faceplant Winter Ale All are very tasty. But my favourite is the Saison.  I enjoy the lighter body along with apricot and swee spice flavours.  The 14 Grahams was also very nice if you are an IPA lover.  It has citrus aroma, with grapefruit and cardamom flavour, and is quite hoppy. The Hooligan Pale Ale has a light nose with a mix of toastiness and charcoal.  Medium acidity.  And last the Faceplant has a creamy malty flavour.  Give them a try. I don't know if you can buy these in Vancouver, but if you can feel assured you are getting tasty #beer. #craftbeer #beerporn #beers #beerstagram #instabeer #beergeek #beerlover #beerme #buybclocal https://www.instagram.com/p/CUyRdQEvk8V/?utm_medium=tumblr

Do you like to enjoy Forbidden Fire? Sounds naughty but is a tasty distilled spirit from apples and enhanced with aromatic spices. From the distillery, @forbidden_spirits In #Kelowna, "The Phoenix emerges from the ashes cloaked in the fiery taste of warming cinnamon, aromatic spices, and just a hint of sweet caramel - awaken your senses on the wings of our Forbidden Fire. Distilled entirely from our premium estate-grown apples. Truly a libation for all new beginnings. Dare to rise!" If you have tasted Fireball, this is similar but not quite as strong, if I remember correctly. I'm enjoying it on ice while I sit on my patio on this semi sunny day, as tomorrow should be a downpour! Do you like an #apéritif to lead you into a fabulous dinner? Wolf & Grouse 2019 is a  bittersweet apéritif made via a collaborative project between Paul Brunner from Blue Grouse Estate Winery on Vancouver Island and Alex Gallé, a Belgian designer and the entrepreneur behind Monteluz Pisco.   On Blue Grouse's website they describe, "Wolf & Grouse 2019 is a bittersweet apéritif with fresh notes of flowers, orange peel, and bitter gentian root that is light in alcohol but powerful in flavour. Perfect to be mixed with tonic or flavoured sparkling water and ice or even a little of Blue Grouse Estate Winery’s very own Paula sparkling wine and lemon juice." Plus it is only 6% abv so you can easily enjoy 1 or 2 glasses. I had the opportunity to try this apéritif on its own and mixed with tonic water and a slice of orange.  This apéritif is easy to sip on its own; its not too heavy or too bitter. But adding tonic water adds some brightness and fizz to this apéritif and makes it that much more enjoyable.  If you like Aperol you will like this. You can purchase Wolf & Grouse 2019 from the @bluegrousewines website. https://www.bluegrouse.ca/product/Wolf-and-Grouse-Apertif Thanks to Leeann from @townhallbrands for mixing this #cocktail for me and others in her office to try together. #cocktails #bar #drinks #bartender #mixology #cocktailbar #drinkstagram #wine #mixologist #cocktailsofinstagram #cocktailtime #bcwine #buybclocal https://www.instagram.com/p/CRFNayysHEm/?utm_medium=tumblr

Did you know that you can make spirits using apples? Vodka, Brandy, and Gin made with apples? It's true and it is being made by Forbidden Spirits Distilling Co in Kelowna, using apples from their orchard, plus some apples from other sources. They have some beautifully designed labels for their bottles, with the "Adam and Eve" theme running through them, thanks to apples. They have a modern 5500 square foot distillery and tasting room.  Drop by to visit them and enjoy a cocktail!  I received sample sizes of their: Forbidden Vodka Rebel Vodka  Wallace Hill Whisky (from grains) Eve's Original Gin Adam's Apple Brandy While you are enjoying a cocktail at the Distillery, why not stay for a #concert?  Every weekend over the summer they are having a concert with local musicians.  Tickets are very reasonably priced.  Megan Lauridsen in Concert is upcoming for a $10 ticket. I will be trying these spirits on their own plus if I can mix a few cocktails.  If you have not purchased the book "Cocktails, Mocktails and Garnishes from the Garden" by Katie Stryjewski this may be a good time to get it and start making cocktails with Forbidden Spirits!  Stay tuned for my upcoming IG posts.
