⚠️ ATTENTION UK COMRADES ⚠️
never in my life did i think i would be making a post like this but here goes.
what's happening in the university of brighton?
during the past week, the university of brighton has announced 110 staff redundancies in a bid to save almost £18m.
meanwhile, senior management have recently shelled out an almost identical sum of money to buy out the lease of a sports facility on campus - a decision which nobody asked for or wanted.
these redundancies will be finalised at the end of june and will have a catastrophic impact on learning conditions, which rely on the expertise of our lecturers. though the ripples of this decision will be felt throughout the university, it explicitly and disproportionately targets 'non-profitable' degrees such as humanities, arts, social sciences, etc.
for the staff made redundant, it could mean the end of their academic career due to a surplus of unemployed academics as a result of sector-wide lack of funding for teaching and research. this is also happening during a cost of living crisis.
lecturers on work visas could be forced to leave the country and may not be able to support their families. those who aren't made redundant will suffer from increased workload, larger class sizes, inability to conduct research and more students per member of staff.
the university of brighton offers a fantastic range of unique, interdisciplinary courses in the heart of the uk's queer capital, allowing our vibrant student community to benefit from intimate seminars that immensely benefit our learning. with some of our departments being cut by more than half, the loss of these will be absolutely devastating.
in the e-mail the student body were sent, we were told the redundancies 'wouldn't affect us', with zero acknowledgement of the relationship students build with their lecturers.
this is an attack on the job security and dignity of our valued body of educational staff. the vice chancellor, who takes home around £250,000 a year, said she 'needs to pay the gas bill'. we say human beings over buildings.
the student body cannot allow this. this sets a dangerous precedent for workers all over the country.
so what can we do to help?
let them know that this not okay. voice your concerns to the vice chancellor debra humphris, who can be contacted at [email protected]
spread information. tell your friends. kick up a fuss. stand in solidarity with staff and students. contact your local representatives and encourage them to offer support. jeremy corbyn has already given his!!
consider following @ uobsolidarity on instagram to stay updated.
here is a petition you can sign and some relevant news articles. here's how to find your mp.
SOLIDARITY FOREVER. FUCK GREED. PLEASE BOOST!!!

First research flight images from innovative balloon-borne telescope Astronomers have successfully launched a balloon-borne telescope which has begun capturing images of the Universe on its first research flight. The super pressure balloon-borne Imaging Telescope (SuperBIT) was flown to the edge of space by a helium-filled NASA scientific balloon the size of a football stadium where it will help researchers investigate the mystery of dark matter. SuperBIT has already taken its first images on this flight, showing the "Tarantula Nebula” - a neighbourhood of the Large Magellanic Cloud where new stars are being born, and the collision between the “Antennae galaxies” NGC 4038 and NGC 4039. SuperBIT is a collaboration between Durham University, UK, the University of Toronto, Canada, Princeton University, USA, and NASA. It launched from Wānaka, New Zealand (Aotearoa) earlier this week, following a two-year delay due to the Covid pandemic. Carried by seasonally stable winds for about three months, it will circumnavigate the southern hemisphere several times - imaging the sky all night, then using solar panels to recharge its batteries during the day. SuperBIT flies at 33.5km altitude, above 99.5 per cent of the Earth’s atmosphere. It takes high-resolution images like those of the Hubble Space Telescope, but with a wider field of view. The science goal for this first flight is to measure the properties of dark matter, a heavy but invisible type of material. Dark matter is all around us but poorly understood. SuperBIT will test whether dark matter particles can bounce off each other, by mapping the dark matter around clusters of galaxies that are colliding with neighbouring galaxy clusters. Various theories about dark matter suggest that, during a collision, some dark matter might either slow down, spread out, or get chipped off. The researchers say that if they can map dark matter leaving the collision, they could finally start to learn what it is made of. Professor Richard Massey, of Durham University’s Department of Physics, said: “It takes the gravity from an entire galaxy to move dark matter and SuperBIT will look at clusters of galaxies that happen to be colliding with each other. “Essentially, we’re using the largest particle accelerators in the Universe, to smash lumps of dark matter and see where the bits fly. “If dark matter goes ‘crunch’, or if bits are chipped off, we could finally start to learn what it’s made of.” Although dark matter is invisible, SuperBIT will map where it is by the way it bends passing rays of light, a technique known as gravitational lensing. While telescopes on the ground have to squint through the Earth’s atmosphere – meaning their view can become blurred - space-based telescopes get a clear view of the light that has travelled billions of years from the distant universe. SuperBIT is the first ever balloon-borne telescope capable of taking wide-field images with resolution limited only by the laws of optics. During its final test flight in 2019, SuperBIT demonstrated extraordinary pointing stability, with variation of less than one thirty-six thousandth of a degree for more than an hour. SuperBIT cost about $5million/£4.1million, almost 1,000 times less than an equivalent satellite. Not only is helium cheaper than rocket fuel, but the ability of SuperBIT to return to Earth via parachute meant the team could tweak its design over several test flights. Reusable spacecraft can also be reconfigured and upgraded. For example, the development team buy a new camera shortly before each launch, because modern detectors are improving so rapidly. Using cutting-edge technology has kept SuperBIT young. The team already has funding to upgrade SuperBIT’s 0.5 metre aperture telescope to 1.6 metres, which would boost light gathering power tenfold, with a wider-angle lens and more megapixels. The relatively cheap cost may even make it possible for a fleet of space telescopes to offer time to astronomers around the world. KAS, I AM ON MY KNEES.
You can't just write about Siegenthischier royalty AU in your tags without continuing!!!
Okay so I did three of the things on my very lengthy to-do list and drank a cup of coffee and a litre of black tea so let’s do this
FIRST of all, fuck monarchies, there is no divine right of kings, second of all this is MY sexy imagine and EYE want to see Jonas in a crown.
So Jonas is a crown prince of a country in the style of Luxembourg with a constitutional monarch and representative democracy and the military of Switzerland. This is as much thought as I am willing to put into the politics of this post, thank you 🙏 He’s expected to take over as monarch after his grandpa dies — he’s one of only a few grandchildren but he’s the oldest and his parents died tragically, so it’s basically always been him. He bears it gracefully, always stays the course, never does anything to bring disgrace upon himself or his family, unlike his cousins. Basically perfect and everyone loves him and feels confident that their country will be fine with him, especially as his grandpa gets older and his health starts to fail.
Jonas does his required 2 year military service and then goes to Kings College London for his university education. He’s studying international relations and modern languages (I don’t know how bachelor’s degrees work in Europe so let’s just go with the idea that he is Smart and Studious) but takes philosophy classes when he can because he wants to. Everyone expects him to spend all his time partying with British royalty in London and like he’s supposed to be spending time in the UK to find a wife in one of the many royal branches, but he mostly keeps his head and sticks to hanging out with his classmates. He’s not big on partying or wild nights out at clubs, prefers a normal night out at a pub with classmates or going to football games with his friends. Again he is VERY aware of the pressure on him when he takes the throne in a couple years and he’s not interested in rocking the boat. Better him than any of his dipshit cousins, basically. He loves his country and he won’t fail his people.
ANYWAY, he goes out to a pub one time with some guys from one of his philosophy classes and they’re all complaining about the grades they got on their papers and arguing with Jonas because he got the highest marks despite not even being in the program, that’s so unfair!! And he agrees to buy them a round of drinks “to make up for being smarter than all of you” which no one takes gracefully, but they’re all laughing and it’s a good night out.
Goes up to the bar, it’s crowded. You see where this is going. Guy gets shoved into him, spills beer all over his shirt. It’s Nico. “Oh god,” says Nico. “I am so fucking sorry.”
Jonas isn’t even that bothered because he knows an opportunity to meet someone when he sees it and he’s, well. He’s not stupid. Nico’s cute and flustered and his eyes are very dark. He spends the next fifteen minutes chatting up Nico, who he leans very quickly is an absolute delight and VERY funny, until his classmates start hollering at him across the bar to hurry up with their drinks. Jonas buys the entire bar a round of shots and goes home with Nico.
AND THEN OF COURSE THEIR GREAT ROMANCE BEGINS. Nico is an international student at LSE getting a BSc in Politics and Economics so he can go home to Switzerland and work in the UN or in some related think tank – he did an internship over the summer with Economic and Social Council working on sustainable development in small rural communities in central Europe and he’s VERY excited about the future he’s creating for himself – working hard to help people, being involved in international politics, doing his best to help the world develop into its best self. Jonas finds out very quickly that Nico has SUCH a big heart – for his family and friends, but also his country, and for the world. Nico wants to help people! Jonas is unclear why he chose the UN if he wants to make an immediate difference int he world – Jonas’s country has had to work with UN and he knows how slowly the wheels of change turn. But he won’t crush Nico’s spirit for anything.
They fall in love so fast that it’s actively embarrassing for both of them but man, when you know, you know, right? They meet each other’s friends, they spend so much time together for the next three years. Nico knows who Jonas is bc a) politics nerd, b) hard to miss the bodyguard trailing them home that first night. Nico spends approximately five minutes being starstruck over it that first time and he gets over it because it’s Jonas.
They don’t spend summers together and they keep it pretty tightly wrapped because if they do get engaged and married, it’s going to be HUGE news for the monarchy when Jonas and Nico aren’t able to have children of their own. No one even knows Jonas is gay except his brother – and Nico. There are always rumors of course, but most people who pay attention to such things just think Jonas is probably secretly dating a Belgian princess. Jonas misses Nico so much during the summer though, beause Nico sends him updates all the time on what’s he’s doing, and meanwhile Jonas is doing royal stuff. Watching anxiously as his grandfather’s health declines. Meets heads of states who slyly introduce their daughters. Is forced to go to a dance class, which kills him, bc Nico is literally doing micro-economics stuff in Romania and having a blast and Jonas just wants to be with him so bad, anywhere in the world. He just wants to be at Nico’s side, always.
Their education is wrapping up, it’s a couple nights before graduation, and Jonas and Nico are MUST MAKE A DECISION. Do they stay together? Do they break up? They can’t keep it under wraps as easily once they graduate. It’ll be harder. Jonas will start taking a more active role in his country’s politics; Nico has multiple job offers lined up already. Jonas confesses to Nico how lonely he’s been growing up, how isolated he’s always felt being told he’ll be king, how empty the thought of being king is, how devoid of meaning his life feels as it rolls out in front of him, decades of isolation and loneliness like he felt growing up. He loves his country and his people and he knows they love him but – it’s a terrible thought to do it alone. He would like to be able to see Nico sometimes. He can’t face the rest of his life with nothing. It doesn’t have to be permanent, it doesn’t have to be big, but he doesn’t want to NOT be with Nico.
Nico’s like, okay! Let’s get married. Jonas is like, well that is not REALLY what I meant, but Nico’s already kissing him so okay, they’re getting married. Jonas calls his brother and is like, hey, I need dad’s ring. his brother, who knows all about Nico bc Jonas got extremely drunk last summer when they were at the lakehouse hiding from their cousins and told his brother all about Nico, just laughs. Sends an overnight courier with both their parents’ rings. Jonas gives his dad’s ring to Nico the next afternoon, who looks so happy he’ll burst.
They go out to a pub that night to spend some time with friends and maybe they’re a little too cosy because, hello, they just got engaged?? And the British tabloids, who always have a couple people trailing Jonas these days as he graduates, because they’ve figured out there is definitely SOMEONE in Jonas’s life, just have not figured out who, catch Jonas and Nico in a very quietly intimate moment through a window. Dig up as much info on Nico as they can. Publish it. The story explodes.
Jonas basically has to go IMMEDIATELY home, skip his graduation, and have a series of the worst conversations in the world with various royal advisors, various politicians, and, most awful of al, his grandfather, who is shattered that a) Jonas is gay (no heir) and b) Jonas didn’t TELL HIM he was gay so he couldn’t support him (he loves Jonas), and c) Jonas got engaged without even talking to him first (THEY ARE A ROYAL FAMILY.)
Meanwhile Nico graduates without Jonas in the crowd :( weh
Things are a liiiiiittle rocky for a couple weeks until Nico can make it to Made Up Not!Luxembourg for a press conference. Jonas is so glad to see him that he could collapse and they have the LONGEST hug in the airport that unfortunately so many airport employees take pictures of. But like it’s Jonas! The whole country loves Jonas! And all they know about Nico is what press offices have been able to dig up on him! And Nico seems like a nice guy, they think? He’s smart and he’s engaged in the world? Someone found a photo of him volunteering at a youth hockey camp in Switzerland and he looked like he was kind?
The press conference is extremely well attended not just by local press but by foreign press and Jonas is so glad he speaks so many languages and he considers it a blessing that Nico is Swiss and speaks three languages. It’s a mess. So many questions all at once. The media coordinator is hollering at them all to shut up. The whole thing is being livestreamed on local TV AND the internet. Who is Nico? Since when is Jonas gay? Why is he marrying someone who isn’t royal and isn’t from their country? Is his grandfather ashamed of his decision or his sexuality? What are Nico’s intentions for the crown? Do they think Nico is equipped to rule alongside Jonas.
“Nico will be a good leader for our people,” says Jonas, when the press relations people threaten to shut the entire conference down if people don’t give Jonas a chance to speak. “He has a degree in politics and economics from London School of Economics and has done extensive work with the United Nations.”
He takes Nico’s hand. The ring on Nico’s hand is very visible in the light of the cameras. Jonas is wearing a ring too – it’s much plainer than Nico’s, but it belonged to Nico’s grandfather. Nico gave it to him last night after they got back to the palace, when they got a quiet moment to themselves in between the chaos.
“And I love him very much,” Jonas says simply.
Nico smiles so brilliantly at him in that moment that no camera in the world can miss how much he loves Jonas. When Jonas looks back, the whole world sees the same.
FIN!!
I love them….

Russell's passport - 1979/80
The Bath Bankers
PulpWiki: Extracted by Stephen Bray from an interview with their bass guitarist, Paul.
I met Russell on the [Business Management] course at Bath Uni in 1979, and we became friends because of that. The course started in October and was mostly filled with kids from well to do families, and Russell and I were in the minority of kids from ordinary working class backgrounds.
It was in the days where suddenly it was OK to join a band even if you couldn't really play. I got a bass guitar and played some rudimentary riffs, Russell was on guitar, and we had a keyboardist called Steve and a singer whose name I can't recall. No drummer. We knew Steve and the singer socially. The band was formed from scratch, driven by Russell, (of course) and i think the band started after Xmas. Russell came up with the name.
We didn't do any covers. It would mostly have been thrashy punk stuff, but I also recall a spooky discordant repetitive melodic song about a fairground and some scary people who worked there! That was the only decent song we did really which I recall got some good feedback from the reviewer at the arts barn. He wrote for some sort of Uni fanzine I think. I looked up [Pulp's] 'Fairground' on Youtube and the skeleton of the song is in there! Amazing!
We did a total of two gigs. One was at the "Arts Barn" at the Uni and one as part of a big music day which culminated with a performance by The Vapours. So in a way I can vaguely claim to have "supported" The Vapours, though they started at 10 p.m. and we were on at 10 a.m. [Editor's note: In April/June 1980, The Vapors were on a UK tour and played at Bath University on 21st June which was presumably this gig]. A local band called Alarm Clox who had a 7" single out were also on that bill.
We didn't do any recordings - recording something back then was a bit different. I do recall a photo of the Vapours gig but looked in my old shoe boxes of photos and couldn't find it.
As a sideline to the band, Russell ran a fanzine called "The Bath Banker" back then and one edition included an early review of a Pulp gig in Sheffield whilst he was back home in the summer holidays (of 1980). [Other than that, Russell didn't mention Pulp. I wasn't at the gig that they played at Bath Uni].
We were on a sandwich course, so at the end of year one we went off to a work placement for six months. In the meantime Steve switched Universities and the singer disappeared from Uni and we never got going again. After we disbanded, I wasn't such close friends with Russell as before and I was pretty useless musically. It was me who lost interest and sold my bass and amp for cash to buy a hifi system.
I did go up to Sheffield in 1982 [actually 28/2/1981!] to stay over at his dad's house and go to see The Fall and Cabaret Voltaire at the Polytechnic. Russell must have liked The Fall, but I think he was more interested in Cabaret Voltaire
Russell was strange and very different and not really dictatorial at all. He arrived at Uni in 1979 with his live in girlfriend, so the Uni wouldn't help out with accomodation. His Hitler moustache and stary eyes made him stand out. He had a left field style of thought process. Generally unconventional when lined up with the Bob Wigley anally retentive types on the course. Also a ironic / wicked sense of humour. Of course he shared my own "underground" music tastes. He was interesting and wasn't condescending I liked him.
A while back I was looking up ex course members who got famous and wiki'd Russell. [The wiki stated that] he got a first class honours degree. He was [actually] the least interested student and got a 3rd. I never knew why he applied for the course to be honest. It was full of posh people who wanted to go on and run big companies. A couple succeeded (Justin King - Sainsbury's and Bob Wigley - Unilever)
--------------------------------------
[Wikipedia now says Russell got a 2:1]

Ok i’ve been raging over this for weeks and I know tumblr is too America/UK centric to care but fuck the Dutch immigration policy can give trump and the tories a run for their money. it’s evil under normal circumstances... but lately it’s been anything but normal.
There is ONE official place where refugees can register as asylum seeking in the Netherlands - in some village in the North East. Officially it’s a place where people can register and stay for a few weeks (and get a “bed, bath, and bread”) while their case is processed and then they move onto either a permanent place to live or leave the country if their country of origin is deemed safe. That’s what it’s supposed to be. That’s the official policy.
UNOFFICIALLY this place is hell. The place has been packed for MONTHS. People have been sleeping on chairs for months because there aren’t enough beds available and the past few weeks people have even been sleeping OUTSIDE.
Tumblr media
This is the front page of a big national newspaper from last week - and it’s only gotten worse (the headline says refugee camp on Dutch soil).
This week 700 (!!!) people have had to sleep outside per night. Tents and other camping supplies donated by people living in the area/local businesses have been banned and taken down because the cameras around the place can’t see into the tents to know what’s going on inside and people might hide weapons or stolen goods in there. (that’s the official statement)
There are constant reports in the news of people fighting and general “unrest” in and around the centre. Which isn’t very surprising since these people are packed together in overcrowded dorms or sports halls (if they’re lucky).
This week a THREE MONTH OLD BABY DIED (officially the cause of death is unknown but I doubt the living conditions - people were sleeping in the centre’s sports hall - helped) and today DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS stepped in (which has NEVER happened before in the Netherlands) and they immediately rushed two people to hospital.
One man was having a HEART ATTACK and another was diabetic and hadn’t had any insulin for A MONTH.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(AzG = Artsen zonder Grenzen/Doctors without Borders)
Also in the news today - unaccompanied minors who get interviewed by immigration officers to determine whether they can stay or not get asked questions they often don’t understand. The official reply to this news? “we’ll do better next time”.
People are sleeping outside, there aren’t enough toilets or food and water... and it’s 32 degrees Celsius today (around 90F).
This is (supposed to be) a civilised country. We have universal healthcare... and this is how we treat people feeling from WAR.
The problem is that the centre is understaffed and the people coming there have nowhere else to go.
The organisation that helps refugees here tries to find places to stay for them but a lot of cities downright refuse to take in refugees (unless they’re white Ukrainian women and children). They bought a hotel to house people in and the people living near said hotel tried to buy it from under them so there wouldn’t be any refugees coming to their town (they failed, all of the papers have already been signed) and people are protesting all over the place because they don’t want brown people (especially brown men) in their city/town.
I heard a woman on the radio this week talking to a journalist about how she only saw men in the refugee centre in her area and that they should just “go back to where they came from and fight for their country”.
TLDR: the Dutch immigration policy is evil, 700 refugees slept outside last night, a three month old baby died, and Doctors without Borders had to step in and rush people to hospital.

Extract:
Independent bookselling times are hard, though and Rais is unsure if the shop, established in 1974 – and that has endured almost five turbulent decades – can withstand the current challenges from the Taliban.
“Very few are buying books now,” he says sadly. One of the consequences of the Taliban takeover has been a mass exodus of intellectuals and others who were part of the book-buying demographic when UK and US forces were in situ in Afghanistan.
“I will keep the bookshop open as long as possible, maybe the Taliban will ban it or destroy it,” he shrugs.
Rais has lived through different rules in Afghanistan and was twice imprisoned during the Soviet era, first in 1979 for a year, and then again a year and a half after his release. He says he experienced torture and mistreatment while he was in jail, including sleep deprivation and being forced to live in freezing conditions.
...
Rais’s bookshop is believed to have the largest collection of books about Afghanistan, expressing a variety of different views of historical events, all under one roof. Along with textbooks for students in areas such as medicine, engineering and languages are many rare books that Rais has found safe hiding places for in case his shop is targeted.
“I have secure places in Iran and Pakistan for some of the books,” he says.
He speaks six languages and says regretfully that he has forgotten a seventh that he was previously able to speak – Russian.
After obtaining a master’s degree in civil engineering at Kabul University, he thought it would not be possible to make a living out of engineering and decided to try to turn his love of books, which he had developed as a teenager, into a business.
Along with his enormous and diverse collection of Afghan books he loves classics including works by Tolstoy, Balzac and Hemingway, and his favourite, the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi. “I loved reading Shakespeare’s Othello in Persian,” he says.

Uebert Angel – Man of Gold or Man of God with double identity?
Tumblr media
In different meetings with undercover reporters who identified themselves as Chinese criminals seeking to wash dirty money through the Zimbabwean economy, waxing lyrical, self-styled prophet and Zimbabwe government official, Uebert Angel who was caught on hidden cameras in the Al Jazeera investigation named ‘Gold Mafia’ assured them, they were in safe hands because unofficially, he is the number two man in Zimbabwe and has the full blessings of the president to sign agreements on behalf of Zimbabwe.
When they told him they wanted to launder over a billion dollars, Angel told them he has laundered several millions before, but never done billions, however, he could launder their billions, with his diplomatic red tape and the money would be delivered directly to his home and nobody would touch it.
He also assured them that they would have no problem at all freely buying and selling gold from Zimbabwe in the money laundering schemes.
The 40-something-year-old flamboyant British-Zimbabwean has always had controversies around him. Born Uebert Mudzanire, he lived in the UK before moving back to Harare to establish the headquarters of his church, Spirit Embassy.
Double ID cards
When in  March 2021 he was appointed Presidential Envoy and Ambassador-at-Large by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, issues came up in the news about his double identity.
News sources in Zimbabwe dug out his two national ID cards. The first ID card has the registration number 83-099297X83, and was reported to have been issued at the Zaka registry offices in Masvingo in 1996. The second card with the registration number 29-195587H83, was said to have been issued in Gweru in the Midlands a year later.
The date of birth on both cards is the same, September 6, 1978, but the card numbers are different.
The report indicated that he used the 1997 ID to secure a Zimbabwean passport with the number ZE 306043.
However, the news reports pointed out that his British passport, number 464932598 which was issued on November 6, 2009, had a different date of birth from the one on his Zimbabwe national ID cards. The British passport has March 4, 1972 as his date of birth.
The reports further said on March 9, 2021, he appeared before a Harare lawyer, Tichavona Mutebere, and made an application to change his name from Uebert Mudzanire to Uebert Angel Snr claiming he was born on September 6, 1978, a birth date inconsistent with his British one but consistent with his two Zimbabwean national IDs.
Interestingly, Angel’s biological brother, Samson Mudzanire, with national ID number 83-066977R83, was born on April 14, 1972. The reports are wondering how his mother, Rose Mudzanire, gave birth to two sons in 1972 within 40 days of each other.
Fake degree
In 2008 the US government published a list containing thousands of names of people who have obtained fake degrees, from Bachelor to PhD degrees from a diploma mill in Spokane, Washington State.
The United States Department of Justice through Operation Gold Seal published the list of fake degrees bought from the phony Saint Regis University, which was eventually shut down.
Tumblr media
On the list is the name Uebert Mudzanire and beside it is listed BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration), but Angel has denied buying a fake degree.
On that list were hundreds of people working in the military, government and education sector of the US, and almost 10,000 people who spent $7.3 million buying phony and counterfeit high school and college degrees from the Spokane-based diploma mill.
According to the website spokesman.com that published the list, it included prominent American citizens working for sensitive government agencies. The list it reported included NASA employee Timothy Francis Gorman, who bought an electrical engineering degree using his e-mail account at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to correspond with the diploma mill, and US Department of Health oncology expert Frank S. Govern, who purchased a doctorate in health care administration.
Tumblr media
National Security Agency employees David W. Barden and Barry A. Hester both bought degrees. Hester, who was a computer Web trainer and designer for the NSA with top-secret clearance, paid $1,187 for an information systems and technology degree, the list shows.
Eric Gregory Cole, who was a contract employee for the Central Intelligence Agency, paid $3,801 for a degree in information systems management. His top-secret clearance at the CIA was revoked late last 2007, months after his name was forwarded to the Office of Inspector General, according to one source, the report said.
Eight people who set up and operated the diploma mill, including ringleader Dixie Ellen Randock, were indicted and convicted of federal crimes. Randock, a 58-year-old high school dropout, was sentenced to three years in prison, according to the report.
The World Bank overview of Zimbabwe
In its overview of Zimbabwe last updated on March 30, 2023, the World Bank notes that Zimbabwe has strong foundations for accelerating future economic growth and improving living standards.
The Bank admits that the economy has excellent human capital, comparable to that of upper-middle-income economies in Sub-Saharan Africa, although some skill shortages are emerging in some sectors. It also notes that, Zimbabwe possesses abundant mineral and natural resources that, if well managed, can support the country’s development objectives.
The Bank however states that Zimbabwe’s economic development continues to be hampered by price and exchange rate instability, misallocation of productive resources, high informality, low investment, and limited structural transformation. Economic growth has been volatile over the past decade. High inflation, multiple exchange rates, and unsustainable debt levels have increased the cost of production, reduced incentives for productivity-enhancing investment, and encouraged informality.
The Bank adds that high unsustainable debt and arrears to international financial institutions (IFIs) limit Zimbabwe’s growth potential.
It indicates that real GDP growth is estimated to have slowed to 3.4% in 2022 from 8.5% in 2021 on the back of worsening agriculture conditions and macroeconomic instability. Due to low rainfall, agricultural output contracted by 14%, after growing at double digits in 2021. Triple-digit inflation constrained private sector demand, while fiscal austerity limited growth of government demand and investment. Among other things the Bank points out that mineral exporters benefited from high global prices and, together with tourism, contributed the most to overall economic growth.
“Inflation returned to triple digits, albeit declining since August 2022, fueled by broad money expansion and a surge in global prices. The war in Ukraine, through high food and energy prices, has exacerbated domestic inflationary pressures that emanated from loose monetary policy and quasi-fiscal operations. Annual inflation returned to triple digits in May 2022 and reached 244% in December 2022. However, monetary tightening, including sharp hikes in interest rates, and fiscal policy measures brought inflation down to 230% in January 2023. Despite still high inflation, the Central Bank reduced the interest rate from 200% per annum to 150% in February 2023,” the Bank said.

Solveiga Pakštaite: Driving Sustainable Food Preservations with Bump by Mimica
Have you ever encountered a situation where you can’t decide whether a food product is past its expiry date or not? We know that the Expiry Dates labeled on food packaging are important factors in determining whether the product is fresh or spoilt. But logically, this does not help. Labels on food packaging are just an estimated number mandated by the government to be on the safer side. Companies too just put in an average number after stability tests on a few batches in varying temperature conditions.
Tumblr media
Although the expiry and manufacturing dates are quite important for consumers to be aware of the use and safe consumption of food products – especially perishable items, they are honestly just a rough estimation of the food product’s quality and safety. Prioritizing your family’s health and safety as well as driving initiatives in sustainable food preservation is very important. But when you’re mindful of the shelf life of the products that need storing for a while, you can extend the use of the food product even after the labeled expiry date.
For example, when we buy dairy products like milk, the shelf life of the product can vary anywhere around 7 days, depending on the packaging and pasteurization processes. But, what if we properly refrigerate the milk in appropriate packaging and in the right temperature condition, the milk can be stored for a few more days. This would still be safe and of good quality even though it’s now past its expiry date. Due to this guess rule game of expiry date estimations and the lack of reliable methods like food expiry indicators that can help determine when a food product is no longer safe for consumption, statistics say that the food waste produced amounts to over 10% of the world’s greenhouse gases every year. In Europe, a staggering 83% of food that is wasted, disposed or discarded is still fresh and safe for consumption, but due to the labeled expiry dates on the packaging, people naturally choose to stay on the safer side.
Therefore in this article, we will cover the interesting insights of a European company located in London, England – Mimica, founded by Solveiga Pakštaite, who specializes in smart packaging and wanted to “radically reduce unnecessary food waste”. Mimica manufactures a patented product label called Bump, that provides real-time indication of when a food product is still good and safe for consumption or when a food product has gone bad and is time to be disposed of. Used in juices, seafood, and poultry packages, Bump by Mimica is driving sustainable food preservations for better futures.
About the Founder and Director of MIMICA:
The Founder and Director of Mimica is Solveiga Pakštaite. She was the brains behind the idea of manufacturing a product called Bump in the year 2017, which provides real-time temperature-sensitive indications of when a food product has really expired or is still safe for consumption.
Solveiga Pakštaite has received an education in the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Industrial Design and Technology from Brunel University London (a public research university located in Uxbridge, England). The founder of Mimica worked in several roles after her graduation, such as – a Graphic Designer and Researcher at Mima (a CCD Design and Ergonomics Limited company), a Trends Researcher at Canvas8, a guest Lecturer at Brunel University London (where she is an alumnus), a User Experience Consultant at UX Connections, a Director at Design By Sol, a Consultant at Kantar Consulting, a Founding Board Member at Fast Foward 2030, an Honorary Lecturer at UCL, and lastly the Founder and Director at Mimica, London, UK. This was the beginning of Solveiga Pakštaite’s journey with Bump by Mimica, which has gained recognition for efforts in the sustainable preservation of food products by many food companies.
The Concept Behind BUMP by MIMICA:
“The next generation of food expiry labeling” – Bump by Mimica is on a mission to improve the quality and safety of food products and help reduce the huge amounts of food wastage that occurs due to expiry date labels. The idea behind Bump by Mimica was industrialized in the year 2017, in London, England, UK, as a patented product that can be used by the Food Industry to provide real-time temperature-sensitive indications of the quality of food products, especially perishable items.
Mission Statement – “To Radically reduce unnecessary food waste.”
For her Degree project, Solveiga came up with the idea behind Bump. She wanted to create a reliable method and design a product initially for visually impaired people. But soon realized that the contributional factors behind increasing food waste were because of the estimated expiry date labels on the packaging of food products. As this product in sustainable packaging materials invented by Solveiga was gaining rapid recognition by supermarkets and food companies, the founder roped in a team of experts and professionals in the industry – Laurence Kayson and Lawrie Matthews, to industrialize the idea and make Bump a patented product under Mimica. Therefore this is how Bump by Mimica came to be manufactured in the Packaging and Containers Manufacturing Industry in London, UK.
Designed and manufactured specially to support the packaging of Beverages, Dairy, Meat, and Seafood – Mimica aims to become the “globally recognized mark of freshness for industries, consumers, and communities”, the patented product manufactured by Mimica won the James Dyson Award in its efforts in shelf-life extension, helped the startup company acquire grant funding from the European Union (EU), the UK Government, as well as from the Mayor of London. Mimica is looking forward to expanding its designs to become compatible with the packaging of Vaccines and Organ Transportation in the future as well.

BEFORE LONDON
4 years ago, 2010
Thu's first scholarship application to the university in London failed because she wrote more or less 2000 words for a 400-word essay. It was not the first time she did not care about the word limit and fail a competition. In secondary school, Thu went to extra-classes for Literature taught by the best Literature teacher of the school. Thu and others were encouraged to write as long as they can, at least four full pages of writing for a 45 minute Literature written test. This year, in addition to submitting the carefully counted 398 word essay, Thu had the chance to meet up with the scholarship director during the UK education fair in Hanoi. He ordered the second coffee with smiley eyes and mouth when Thu asked him about his degree in Archaeology before. Martha, her American friend, told Thu before that she knows how do 'disarm' people when they did a mock interview. Thu actually learned this from a friend who earned a full scholarship at a top university in Canada - 'google' your interviewer's name then talk about their past or interests.
Thu checked her email after tutoring English in exchange of drawing lesson by a friend of her who came back from Art University in Beijing and her cousin. It was the 23rd of July, 2010. Thu screamed, smiled in bursting tears 'I got the full scholarship'. Vinh, her friend, smiles and warn calmly 'You will cry more during the three years'. Thu insisted 'No, I have been through a lot already. I would be fine'.
Thu called her mum, mum calmly said with probably a big smile 'The fairy tale has come true' Thu texted all friends, they all replied with joy and lots of exclamations and happiness for her. They all knew Thu had suffered so much from her parents' conflicts and struggled so much to apply to study in the U.S. and then the U.K. in the last two years. More than a month before the flight, together with her mum and friends, Thu bought all she thinks she would need for three years in London, mainly clothes because she thought they would be very expensive in London. She would need a long leather jacket that covers till the knees and two other big leather jackets. London is known as a foggy city and England must be a cold country. She bought clothes from the Made in Vietnam shops where they sell clothes that were made for western brands with small minors so they stay in Vietnam, supposedly sold with cheaper prices. The visa result only comes two days before the flight and that is when Thu went to buy two suitcases - they were more expensive than everything else but Thu can use them for life, she would not want the wheels to break in the middle of the trip. They run out of black ones so she got a yellow pair - one small, one big - in the end, it is her favourite colour. Thu packs everything the night before the flight, white night. Her mum fell asleep throughout the night, of course she already hid away the clothes she would rather Thu not wear, either 'quirky' or start to be old.
7am, a friend came over with her motorbike to give Thu a ride to go print the flight ticket in Bach Khoa University area. 8am, the taxi arrived. Mum often said she would have the taxi stop right at where she has her food stall the day Thu flies away but it was actually further back, right in fornt of her house. Thu saw her dad's mum sitting in front of the neighbor's house with the old woman who sells babyduck eggs as breakfast snacks. This grandmother properly overheard that Thu's leaving. Was her dad sleeping or looking through the window curtain from the second floor, she didn't have time to think about that. Thu decided not to tell her dad about her flight because she was afraid he might make a scene and cause some problem to her departure…He might not. But you never know…Thu and mum caught some sleep in the taxi. 9am, Thu, her two aunts and her mum arrive at the airport with her uncle and his wife waiting there already - he'd rather drove his boss's car now that he has a driving license rather than joining the rest in a taxi. One of her aunts knows a guy at the airport so Thu can have 10 kilos more of luggage and Thu was rushed to check in first, despite the long queue of people - they must have looked at Thu with disguised eyes. Her other aunt tried to put more underwears - gift from the other aunt, in Thu's hand luggage that was already too full. Aunt's cheeks were getting red. It probably was her first time at such a big airport in such an occasion.
10am. It's time Thu check in and said the final goodbye to everyone. Mum was too sleepy and tired. They did not hug. It was probably still too western a thing for them all.
Thu arrived at London airport late in the evening. The Belgian guy who said would come to pick her up is not there. Thu paid some pound money to use the internet at the airport, he writes in the message on Facebook that his girlfriend stays in Belgium so he will not study in London anymore. Dragging two big suitcases with the hand luggage on top of the big one, Thu took a taxi, asking him how much is it to the address she has - he said around 50 pounds. The university website says it's around 35 pounds but it's late now so she thought that's ok. The taxi went slowly, Thu could see things on the sides, he stops at many traffic lights. Thu thought that was nice, normally they would drive fast to save the time. Arriving at the university on Marylebone Road, the taxi driver asked for 70 pounds - Thu questioned in surprise, he said there were many traffic lights and it's counted according to the time. It was the most money Thu spent ever in London. Thu went to the corner of the street and saw a McDonald store, never had it before, she bought a meal deal - compared to Vietnamese street food, it was bad.
The first week in London, Thu stayed in a single room on the 16th floor of the university's student hall. Thu took hundreds of photos of the blue sky, white clouds. The first morning, wearing black tight, black skirt, with a colourful hoody, Thu turned left on Marylebone Road, then turn left again on Baker Street. 'Oh, people are not too tall here', Thu thought to herself when realising she has the average height compared to people walking next to her here. People walk fast. Thu realised then slowed down to her normal speed. Thu stopped at E.A.T and have some food that is not good enough to be remembered. In the afternoon, Thu turned right after getting out of the student hall, walking along Marylebone Road and decided to turn right on the small road that attracted her attention. Thu stopped at the first cafe for lunch, it was a Spanish or Mexican restaurant, Thu ordered some omelette - it was a huge portion, Thu couldn't finish, asked for a box to bring the rest home. From there looking to the opposite site is a clean glass store with nice installation and decoration inside, people walking pass by white, clean, well-dressed - everything was like a two open page from a Western European magazine. The sign says 'Marylebone High Street'.
The second day in London, mum called, crying like a child in the phone 'I have cleaned all your things in the room, either putting in boxes or giving away. Even though we fought a lot sometimes, I miss you a lot'. It is probably the first time mum said such cheesy words to Thu. They don't do that in Vietnamese culture.Thu still remembers it took her half of the night after a big fight with mum to say 'I'm sorry'. It was during the hard time when Thu's parents got separated the second time - this time her dad didn't leave the house like when they got divorce nine years ago but stayed in the same house and start fights often, going with some other women as usual and that drove Thu's mum a little bit nuts.
Thu was not sad as mum of course, finally her dream has come true - studying abroad, with a full scholarship - her new life starts from here and now!

Why does Judaism reject Jesus Christ?
Tumblr media
The book Why does Judaism reject Jesus Christ? which explains Revelation; History of Israel; Jewish History; Jesus Christ was written by Ali Ansarifar. This book examines the history of ancient Israel in the Bible and proposes that there is a malignancy in human soul that rejects strict monotheism and God's moral law. BUY ON AMAZON ORDER YOUR EBOOK This book examines God's revelation in the Bible and searches for a narrative that explains God's plan and intention for humanity. God's original covenant with ancient Israel was meant to create a model nation based on strict monotheism and full obedience to His moral law, but this did not happen. The history of ancient Israel at various stages of its development will be studied in detail. This will include the early history after Israel received the ten commandments; Israel's attempts to conquer and settle in the promised land under God's guidance; the emergence of kings and kingdoms; unintended messianic expectations; and unplanned temple-worship. The Jewish history diverged from that which God planned in the original covenant and took a highly destructive course. The author argues that the biblical narrative indicates that there is a malignancy in human souls (Jews and gentiles) which prevents humans from being strictly monotheists and obeying God's moral law. For as long as this malignancy remains in the human soul, the human relationship with God will fail. Thankfully, redemption in the person of Jesus Christ will resolve this problem and bring human destiny into line with what God has intended. Current world events are moving decisively towards a cataclysmic end from which a false messiah will emerge on the scene, bringing human history to its conclusion. The book Why does Judaism reject Jesus Christ? which explains Revelation; History of Israel; Jewish History; Jesus Christ was written by Ali Ansarifar.
