Kinky TB Adventures (probably) with Okita Part 1: Kyoto Winds
Finally playing another Hakuoki route because I spent 10 hours travelling yesterday and I deserve some imaginary romance, damn it! Choosing Okita because he seems fun and I hate that he disappears from the story pretty early on in most routes and then dies off screen :'(
WARNING: I wrote a lot :)
Intro:
I don't know why but Kodo's evil old man face made me laugh so much during the intro.
Playing the prologue because it has a hearty chunk of Okita in it and it's been a while since I played the game.
Chizuru talking about the invisible wall between herself and other people is relatable af :')
"I'm not sure if I belong here... No. No, that's all in my head." < < < ME. Hello imposter syndrome, my old friend :')
I now feel like a li'l bitch for complaining about my journey yesterday when Chizuru WALKED nearly 500KM from Edo to Kyoto X_X
I'm loving this old timey film effect on the Kodo flashback.
I feel like Kodo's actions and motivations change depending on the route so I'm not going to try too hard to wrap my head around them here.
I love that "Ronin" is basically shorthand for "Evil Douchebag Thug" in this game X_X
Yukimura: "Be careful, father! Kyoto is a dangerous place!" Also Yukimura: "I have nothing to fear because I look like a BOY :) " Selfless but foolish X_X Although, you could argue that being reckless is selfish because it disregards your loved ones' feelings, should you get hurt.
At least the game gives these ronin names :') although... they don't have eyes. I think I'd rather have eyes, if I had to choose.
"I could still hear the ronin cursing loudly" I just have an image of these three guys running through the streets of Kyoto yelling, "FUCK. SHIT. PISS. ASS."
This game invested a lot in blood effects and sounds and I respect and appreciate that.
"He died with the first blow" Silver linings?
"They were... broken" :'(
Awe, the furies look so happy to see me :') JK, this scene is appropriately chilling. They do have big smiles, though.
More blood splashes and visceral blood descriptions :')
Okita, your sadism is showing.
Or maybe he knows that Saito doesn't like killing his comrades and that's why he wanted to kill them first :O :O :O
"if you just sat back and let them kill the kid, you could have saved us some trouble." -_- I enjoy Okita's banter but I have a feeling that it's going to be a bit one sided because Chizuru doesn't do back talk X_X
WAIT A FUCKING SECOND, WHY IS OKITA NOT BLINKING?!??
Oh here we go. Let's take a moment to worship Hijikata. I still think that Saito and Okita are better looking but sure, let's take a break to gush about "smooth, dark hair" in the moonlight and "the wistfulness of flower petals" "as if the cherry trees were blooming out of season" X_X ick.
HEY. CHIZURU. REMEMBER WHO RESCUED YOU. IT WASN'T THIS FUCKER.
OH GOD, IT CONTINUES, "His voice was cold and quiet, like a blade of ice. Blue-white moonlight lit his slender face.." blah blah ick.
OH, WE'RE STILL NOT DONE?!? "But it wasn't the sword making my breath catch. It was his eyes. They were fierce and hard, but somewhere behind them... I could catch a glimpse of... something else." Blah blah, troubled, mercy, blah
"Run, and I will kill you. Do you understand?" SPLOOSH (yes, I have been watching Archer)
I was sort of joking about being aroused by threats of violence but swords are definitely sexier than... whatever that whole flowery passage was...
Okita still is not blinking O_O
Hijikata telling Okita to shut up is a mood. Sorry, Okita.
Okay, NOW Okita's blinking. Guess all it took was Hijikata suggesting that they're going to kill me for a change. Apparently, only Okita's allowed to threaten to murder me X_X
Side note: if anyone reads this and is wondering if I'm aware that I switch between "You", "Me" and "Chizuru" then yes, I am and no, I don't care.
Apparently, Okita blinking was a fluke. Maybe he only blinks when he is pushed off stride or, like, flustered or surprised?
Also, I don't tend to think of Okita as being especially tall but he's taller than Hijikata!
"So we should just kill people now?" Um... you don't do that?
"What?! Come on, you can't be serious" HE SAID, BLINKING AND THUS BACKING UP MY THEORY.
"Almost as if I was being... drawn into their world..." Oh dear! We wouldn't want that to happen, that's not why we bought the game at all! :P
"A world where there is nothing strange in carrying on a normal conversation in the dead of night with corpses for company." Edgy. Although, I hope that this conversation is far from normal O_O
"As you wish." Hijikata is Saito's Princess Buttercup. I'm not jealous.
WHOA. I was just musing about death as usual and now Okita's RIGHT UP IN MY FACE.
"We did save you, didn't we?" WELL, TECHNICALLY, Saito saved me. You suggested letting the furies KILL ME.
"I didn't realise right away he was speaking to me." How? He's taking up the entire screen?
"Thank you very much." Fair. "I apologise for not thanking you earlier." Okay, calm down. It's not like they gave you a chance to speak in between death threats.
"The man called Hajime also looked confused. His eyes were wide and he had an expression I couldn't place." Then allow me: STARTLED ERMINE. Hijikata's is DISGRUNTLED HORSE and Okita's is SMUG LYNX. Aka: how three different animals react to the discovery that their prey is a girl. I know that horses don't hunt prey. However, they do have to deal with it when their animal subordinates unwittingly capture it.
"He broke out in laughter again, so much so that he was forced to wipe a few tears from his eyes" I'M SO GLAD THAT YOU'RE HAVING SUCH A JOLLY TIME, YOU ASS.
Now that he's figured out that I'm a girl, he's suddenly keen to introduce himself :P
"The one you should be thanking for saving you is Hajime Saito" CORRECT.
Is he deliberately trying to let him kill me by giving out as much info as possible? O_o
"His fingers like iron cables around my arm." Kinky.
"The cause of my horror wasn't the gruesome end that awaited me, but something else entirely." Hanging out with these crazy fuckers.
Chapter 1:
Damn, I wrote a lot more than I had expected for the prologue X_X
"My limbs were tightly bound in tight knots" I wouldn't be surprised if Okita was a shibari expert...
"This is no way to treat a guest of ours" Obviously, Inou-bae is trying to be kind but this feels like something a supervillain would say after their minions bring you to their lair X_X
"he smiled at me and winked" get this man a route! Actually, wait, how old is Chizuru... OKAY, FORGET I SAID THAT. NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO FLIRT WITH THIS 16 YEAR OLD GIRL. Although, maybe a dad route? No romance, just familial love. He's a better dad than Kodo. NO DADDY KINKS ALLOWED.
Apparently, Harada and Nagakura being "lively" is supposed to reassure me?!
Ah, Okita and his hilarious jokes about invading my personal space.
I'm so glad that Saito doesn't let him get away with this nonsense <3
And now we're sticking up for Saito and calling out Okita's bs <3
"the smile lingered through his bright eyes" Oo-er
"He looked more like a boy than a man." Says you!
The baka trio look so done X_X
"Their faces were still blessed with youth" Phew. Looks like we'll have some eye candy while we're brutally executed.
A STICK?!? THEY'RE CALLING ME A STICK?! HAVE THEY NOT SEEN THE ANIME INTRO?! CHIZURU HAS TITS!!!
"The hell I will, boy!" Calm down, Kratos.
"You could be taken for interrogating" not if you assholes don't make such a song and dance about me witnessing your shady activities! How would anybody know to interrogate me in the first place?!
"Let's just kill the kid" How about no!!!
"I was just kidding." WERE YOU, or did you just change your tune because daddy Kondou told you off? -_- I don't think Saito's buying your shit.
"Hehe." XD best response!
Side note, how am I the first person to witness the furies in action?! They run around the streets, chopping people up and there are already rumours about the Shinsengumi committing brutal crimes.
Also, how often do they sentence men to death? There are a lot of men in the fury corps and I bet that some choose death or try and run for it and die in the process.
"I think that Souji has a point" BOO, HARADA!
"Uh-oh. Well, this is going to make it even harder for us to simply let you go..." He's doing the not blinking thing again! Maybe that's because his prey is in his sights... O_O Also, thanks a lot, Heisuke X_X
"A man should always be ready to face death. You should make your peace with yours." Okay, first of all, I look like a child to you! Secondly, bit sexist! Not all men choose the path of the warrior. Thirdly, AS IF, I'm just going to lay down and accept my POINTLESS murder just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. No, Nagakura, I am NOT okay with being MURDERED. How dare you imply that I'm a coward for not wanting to die for this BULLSHIT.
Not sure if I mentioned this last time but Sano's casual suicide comments remind me of being at uni :')
"there's something I want to look into." Is it my stuff? Are you going to go through my stuff now? X_X
"I... I'm sorry." I forgive you, Heisuke! As for everyone else who's acting like this is all my fault and you've done nothing wrong, fuck you. Y'all shouldn't be doing evil science in the first place, especially if you're then going to try and justify MURDERING everyone who glimpses the evulz.
This whole bit reminds me of a DnD party where everyone's arguing over whether or not to kill someone. This is definitely more like a DnD argument than your average movie argument X_X
"All right, Saito, take care of the kid." 😍 Yes, Saito, take care of me :D NOT IN A MURDERY WAY O_O
Time to RUN THE FUCK AWAY. Maybe, if they hadn't acted like murdering assholes, I wouldn't be doing this but they don't seem to give a fuck about me so AWAY I GO.
"I knew it was rude, but I had no choice but to try and open the sliding door with my toe." Priorities X_X They kidnapped you, tied you up and threatened to kill you countless times. Honey, you stick it to those fuckers with your shady toe opening.
WE DIDN'T EVEN MAKE IT OUT OF THE ROOM!!!
"Sorry," No your not -_- "but now we've got to kill you." No you don't!
"Then you may do whatever you like with me." Um, why is this the Okita romance option? XD Don't say those words to that sadist, who knows what he wants to do to you! O_O
"We aren't going to eat you or anything." ...Damn X_X I hope that your stance changes if we get married.
"Heh. Never seen such an innocent girl like you." Ugh. As if. Running around dressed as a boy. Can't be that innocent. Certainly not if he read my last comment :P . Anyway, YOU SOUND CREEPY, TALKING LIKE THAT XD
"All right, all right. Now, tell your big brother... Why were you cross-dressing around Kyoto?" THA FUCK DID YOU JUST CALL YOURSELF?!?? And MIND YOUR DAMN BUSINESS XD DON'T KINK SHAME ME!
"Well, 'she' claims to be a girl, but it's not like we have any actual proof, right?" Um, I'M not the one who said that I'm a girl and I DON'T LIKE WHERE THIS IS GOING. I WILL FIGHT YOU FUCKERS IF YOU COME NEAR ME >:(
"My apologies, but I took the liberty of checking through your belongings." I wouldn't mind, except NOT ONCE did they give me a chance to explain myself or plead my case. He could have just asked whatever he wanted to know and then checked my bags to verify it X_X
"Hey now," HEY NOW, NOW, sing this corrosion to me... No? I'll be quiet :(
"So, you've been withholding information from us?" YOU BARELY GAVE ME A CHANCE TO SPEAK, YOU DICK!
Welp, they've agreed not to kill me and yet Okita's still taking it upon himself to threaten me with death while fixing me with his unblinking, predatory stare X_X
"Gee, didn't take long for you to change your tune once you knew she was a girl, eh Shin?" TRUTH
"Having a lady here at headquarters is sure to brighten things up." Joke's on you: I'm a goth ;P
"you can't just pawn her off on someone else." Okita, nooooooo! Don't make me work for this grumpy bitch!
"I hope you you'll take good care of her." Wink wink, nudge nudge. What's the matter, Hijikata senpai? Am I not pretty enough for you? :'(
"You sons of BITCHES." HEY. HIJIKATA. NO NEED TO INSULT THEIR INNOCENT MOTHERS. Just call them straight up bitches :)
"The Shinsengumi keeping a woman here... If such rumours were to spread, tongues would begin to wag." Yeah, yeah, so we might as well just all fuck. People are going to say we're doing it, regardless, so let's get this over with...
Or I could keep pretending to be a man. That could also work.
"You're gonna get a room, and you're gonna stay in it." FUCK YOU
"I could have sworn we decided she was going to be someone's page" O_O FUCK YOU EVEN MORE, OKITA.
So... lonely... must... find... friends...
Okita and Saito friends :D
When I first played this game, I was really keen to find my "father" but now that I know what he's like, it's hard to muster quite the same level of enthusiasm X_X
"Draw your blade, unless it is merely decoration." Spicy! I'm glad that Yukimura is not so easily goaded into fighting.
"I'm not lying." You tell him, girl!
Saito and Okita's stunned faces when you suggest that you might accidentally hurt Saito are priceless! X_X I guess this shows that you take this seriously, though.
"Excuse me... You don't have to laugh..." XD Is this almost sassy?
Surprise, Okita likes it when I do what he says despite understandable reservations XD
Saito looks way too happy to be doing this XD was this just a chance for him to show off? :P
IS HE LAUGHING AT ME?!? XD RUDE!
WHA THA FUCK. I think that it was a glitch but there were suddenly about seven Saitos on screen. Maybe that's what it feels like when you're fighting him.
Woah, it happened again, only this time there were two and one was squashed.
I'm fine with there being more Saitos.
Aaaaand he's holding a sword at my throat... Sploosh? Shut up, swords are sexy. I probably watched too many period and fantasy films as a child...
"In the blink of an eye, his face was only inches from mine," O RLY? 😏 WAIT, I'm supposed to be playing Okita's route X_X Must... stop getting distracted...
"Your master should be proud." SAY IT AGAIN 😍
"I then noticed how wildly my heart was beating." Though not from fear, right? ;)
"You all right?" Kind words? FROM OKITA?!?
"polite applause" FROM OKITA!?!
"If you want, we'll keep you company." Yes, Okita, obviously I want that :D
First sign of madness: talking to your own head!
Okita could look less smug about catching me talking to myself -_-
"I wanted to scream, but before I could open my mouth, Saito stepped out from behind the door." X_X Well, they did say they'd keep me company.
"I think that's enough fraternising, Souji." Wait a second...
"I figured if I left the two of you alone, it would be longer before I saw either of you," ... Why does that sound slightly risqué? -_- I feel like this scene changes slightly depending on your affection levels...
-_- The only reason Heisuke is short is because Nagakura's stunted his growth by constantly stealing his food.
"How are we to deal with accepting such insanity?" MOOD.
Wait, does Okita subsist entirely on sake?! O_O
"Try not to worry about eating too much or being a freeloader or something. Just eat your little heart out, okay?" Surprisingly wholesome content from Okita :')
Takeda! <3 My douchey doppelganger!
"your adorable page" -_- Watch it, "big brother"
"I'm not having any of your insolence today." Hijikata temporarily transforming into a villainous English aristocrat.
And after aaaaallll that, I'm just going to stay behind to spend some quality time with Okita, probably X_X
"Huh!? Why? You're finally getting the chance to search for Kodo." GOOD POINT. However, gotta get that dick, amirite?
"Perhaps, I should have gone..." YUP. PROBABLY.
"Are you regretting it? If you are, then you should've just gone with them." TRUTH.
"He smiled wryly before continuing while touching my chin." WEEEEOOOOA WEEEEEOOOOA PHYSICAL CONTACT ALARM. WE HAVE INITIATED PHYSICAL CONTACT. IT WAS WORTH STAYING BEHIND AFTER ALL!
"You don't regret it at all? Not even if you knew that Hajime and I went out of our way to convince Hijikata?" Aw, y'all did that for me? Yeah, this is a terrible decision X_X Except for the part with the chin touching. I guess stalking you overrides all logic?
"I was surprised. Saito did make that promise" and what? You thought he was a liar? Girl.
"It was actually Hajime that convinced Hijikata." Not sure if Okita's being modest but this is making it reeeeally hard for me to stop myself fangirling over Saito. Again.
"When I see Saito later, I need to apologise and give my thanks to him." YOU BETTER. >:(
Did he just call me useless (in a battle)? XD I mean, he's not wrong... As we will no doubt soon find out...
Wait, wait... He just said that if I'm in danger, I will become a nuisance and he'll FRICKIN' STAB ME. WHAT?! DOESN'T THAT MAKE YOU THE GREATEST DANGER, OKITA!??
Chapter 2:
Did we ever apologise to Saito? X_X
"Please allow me to continue looking for my father!" Where was this enthusiasm earlier -_-
"If you want that risk, feel free to join us." Ooooooh, scary.
"Remember that you're here to keep me company" Um, excuse me!?
Burn down the city and kidnap the Emperor while everyone else is "losing their shit." This seems like the plan of crazy people o_O
"Would you care to join us." Kondou's making this raid sound like a dinner party X_X
Chizuru getting distracted by the more "elegant" night uniforms while preparing for the raid is a Big Mood.
Am I going crazy or does this game normally give me more choices here? Am I being paranoid or is it now shipping me with Okita? Can't I normally choose to go with Hijikata or stay behind?
"Giving the enemy a good, loud warning that he's about to kick the tar out of them. That's Kondou for you..." Okita kind of has a point X_X
"They sauntered towards the inn" Quite the image.
Oh shit! Okita's fighting Kazama O_O
"Okita was battling a ronin." Damn, you're lucky that Kazama can't read minds X_X
"Thanks for the dance, chump." -_- Kazama's such a dick.
"You're our enemy, so you've gotta die." Okita's philosophy is simple and elegant.
"His sword moved in large, crude arcs, while Okita fought with skill and finesse." Wow, SUPER glad that Kazama can't read minds O_O
EXECUTE PLAN: HURL BOWL AT KAZAMA.
IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE: OKITA SENPAI NOTICED ME.
Wait... WHAT WAS THAT "WET CRUNCH" WHEN KAZAMA KICKED OKITA'S CHEST!??!? O_O IS THIS HOW HE GETS TB?!? O_O
"Wet, tearing coughs." OH FUCK O_O
"I like watching children squirm." WTF, Kazama. BEGONE, THOT.
:'O Injured Okita is trying to put himself between me and that crazy bitch <3
Oh damn, he is coughing e blood :'O
"What a fool" UUUURRRRGGGGH KAZAMA IS THE WORST. SOME PEOPLE CARE ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE, KAZAMA. AND SOME PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO PUT THEMSELVES IN DANGER BECAUSE THEY CARE ABOUT MORE THAN THEIR OWN SELFISH NEEDS.
"I... I can still fight..." NO.
"You always said you'd kill me if I got in your way..." OOOOOOOOOOOH! HERE WE GO! THE FAÇADE BEGINS TO SHOW CRACKS *munches popcorn*
Iba... y u no mention our shared childhood?
ISHIDA POWDERED MEDICINE.
Nagakura says that it's delicious... I wonder if it tastes like cough medicine. Cough medicine is delicious. And addictive...
"I would never have thought that Toudou or Okita would return from a fight injured..." Why, Inoue? Are skilled and strong warriors invincible?
"The injured are a burden, so we shall remain here and guard the compound like obedient soldiers." O_O Ouch, Sanan!
Wait, I don't get a choice to go with them?! I KNEW IT. THIS GAME KNOOOOOWS! I'm too far down the Okita path to turn back now, I guess.
"Um... " Chizuru is me trying to make small talk.
Weird isn't necessarily a bad thing, Chizuru! Take it as a compliment!
I feel bad for not realising how badly injured he got during the raid during my other playthroughs X_X
I thought that I'd somehow missed the scene with the children because this playthrough's taking so long because I'm making so many fricking notes X_X Turns out, I have a lot more to say when you actually get to spend time with the chosen boi.
"Oh, don't worry. I didn't kidnap them or anything." ... GOOD!????
"I was bored" Hey, I get lonesome too! Why can't you come play with me? D:
"They take care of me." Pretty cute. :3
"You wanna come play with us?" Duh!
"No" GURL
He really does look like a happy cat when he smiles!
Wow, these children have a lot of attitude.
"It's a place for men to do, um, work." Yes, just normal human work. Nothing funny going on here.
"They're catching bad guys and keeping Kyoto safe" "No, they're not. They're just killing people." These kids are SAVAGE :')
"Can't deny that" ... Way to back me up, Souji...
"I probably hear him talk about death everyday." Wait, really? What exactly does he have to say about death?
"The Shinsengumi are a bunch a weirdos." :') And that makes them extremely lovable!
Last time, I tried defending the Shinsengumi and Okita ended up terrorising a child so LET'S PICK THE OTHER OPTION AND SEE IF THERE'S LESS CRAZY...
"Don't tell me you're taking this seriously?" CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE, OKITA!
"They all look like bad guys." Why? Because they're hot?
"I didn't know what I was supposed to do..." Uh, maybe tell this childries not to judge a book by its cover? Idk, maybe try and suggest that the world is not so black and white? Definitely don't mention the bloodlust.
"Grinning like an idiot." You're just jealous of his happiness, you cynical-ass child
"He's a wuss." UM, pretty sure he's the most powerful member of the Shinsengumi so stfu :P
"He grabbed the child" Oh dear... Here we go...
Okita! Use your words to teach the children a lesson! Not whatever this fucked up shit is X_X
Ah, ruling with fear! :') When has that ever backfired?
"I'll tell them I'm sorry. Then I'll tell them how awesome Kondou is." GUD. >:(
Uuuuugh, I'm so so tired and I've written so much CRAP so I will SLEEP and play the next bit tomorrow! :D

Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds Part 13 - Hijikata Toshizo Route
Tumblr media
When Hijikata and Nagakura were trying to chase after the remnants of the Choshu that were trying to commit seppuku, I kind of wanted Hijikata’s group to not make it, since I’m sure if those men were willing to commit suicide instead of getting arrested by the Shinsengumi, then it just shows how much they didn’t want to be defiled by their enemies. I can see why Kazama tried to stop them. So yeah, despite what Hijikata said to Kazama, it was nice to see that Hijikata respects people who could go so far like that even if they are the enemy. It was kind of saddening to see Hijikata and Sanan talk, Sanan was happy that he could use a sword again even if it sacrificed his humanity, whereas Hijikata was quite sad that Sanan can never truly be beside them in the Shinsengumi as the colonel next to Kondou. I feel like the Shinsengumi would have benefited much more with Sanan in the open, but I can understand why it was so frustrating to him, and if it tormented him so much, I guess losing his humanity wasn’t much to trade in his opinion…
Hijikata reminiscing about the past as the guys partied in the background was rather nice and soothing to see, they really came a long way to become the people they are now. I didn’t know I needed that CG with his hair down until I saw it, so beautiful!! So cute when the heroine suggested that she’d help tie his hair up since he thought it was a hassle but also a waste of time to do himself since he has so many documents to go through. It’s nice that her talking to him and asking what he wants for lunch kinda gave him a break haha. It was also nice to see him looking out for her in his own way. Chizuru always thinks she’s useless when she helps out a lot with the menial jobs, so it was nice of Hijikata to tell her that she shouldn’t push herself into thinking that she needs to do more when she’s already doing a lot. Although Chizuru is quite submissive and apologising all the time for nothing, I think her silliness seems like a great relief for Hijikata who has to deal with so many internal and external problems of the Shinsengumi. I like how Hijikata tells her these things though, that she too easily yields and bows to things and him, if she believes in something, then she should hold her head up high and stay true to it and don’t be swayed by other people’s words even if it’s him. I like that he wants her to become stronger for herself.
I love how Hijikata noticed that Chizuru gave her portions of riceballs to the rest of the Shinsengumi soldiers, so he wanted to give her his, but she refused, so he halved it! I like how he always notices how self sacrificing she is, so he makes her get what she deserves. She always puts others before herself, so I guess it makes it difficult for Hijikata to watch out/over her tbh haha. It was so nice when he voiced his appreciation for her staying with the Shinsengumi when she could have just left with Sen. Although I really wanted to punch Chizuru when she said she wanted to talk to the guys in Yodo Castle for reinforcements. Like girl, they already shot at you when you announced your presence, you really think they’re going to start opening the door now and be like yeah sorry, totally didn’t mean to kill you. You should be fleeing for your lives and be glad if no one chases after you to kill you! The moment they shot at you, they already had their answer to her question, they have no intention of talking. I feel sorry for Gen that he has to protect her and voice to her that yes, they really need reinforcements but they’re definitely not able to get them here anymore. It was devastating to see Kazama have killed Gen’s men and then Gen himself as if he was disposing of bugs. I don’t think I’ve hated Kazama this much since Saito’s route. I really didn’t want Hijikata to drink the Water of Life, but the moment he appeared to save Chizuru, there was no choice. He could overpower Kazama with his skill but not power against Kazama in his Demon form, there was no going about it. But it really hurt to see Hijikata consumed by his fury, and it was only when Yamazaki suffered a blow for him did he wake up from it. I don’t want Yamazaki to die again😭😭 My heart broke when Hijikata said he wanted to bury Gen and his group since the weather was getting cold around this time, I think Shinichiro Miki (VA) really nailed the pain, and the restrained tears behind those words. It was quite chilling hearing him and Kazama fight as well, because Hijikata sounded really frightening. But yeah…regardless, everything is just so saddening…
Tumblr media
Seeing Yamazaki pass away is always so heartbreaking. At least he got to say his final words to Hijikata… But hearing him say he wants Chizuru to be there to see the Shinsengumi victorious in the future was just so painful. It made me think about all the men that died believing that the shogunate will win and that their comrades will see to it even if they can’t. Yet in the end, they lost, they lost their lives, they lost everything… Although I already understood Hijikata’s convictions, I think seeing him witness people like Yamazaki dying with these last words, seeing people like Gen killed in cold blood, there was no way for Hijikata in all the other routes to possibly ever stop fighting until his death when he carried so many of their hopes, their beliefs and their lives with him. In the end, was this a blessing or a curse? I’m sure with the shogun fleeing to Edo and the other things that will come to pass, Hijikata would have known that they couldn’t possibly win anymore, and yet he still fought in all the other routes, I don’t know if I’ll be able to witness all the pain he will endure in his own route.. it was so heartbreaking for Chizuru to tell Hijikata Gen’s last words, his apology for not being able to be there for Hijikata anymore, and his appreciation towards Hijikata for allowing him to be a part of the Shinsengumi and all this. Hijikata is really carrying everyone’s dreams, he could never allow himself to fall…
The endings were quite expected. Hijikata either gets killed by Kazama or he survives and says he can’t take care of Chizuru and that she should seek Sen out for protection, and Chizuru acknowledges that and follows considering Gen and his men died because of her, which I think is probably the more realistic take out of it. Overall, Hijikata’s relationship is a budding one but still quite cute. Chizuru is quite similar to him in that they’re both selfless and put the Shinsengumi first before themselves, and I think that’s an important mindset to have if you want to be Hijikata’s partner tbh haha. It’s just that Hijikata’s dedication to the Shinsengumi is to another level. Regardless, plot is similar to the others so not much else to comment besides…this is the last route! Goodbye Kyoto Winds! It was a long common route and I probably didn’t get or missed some things but I still really enjoyed the history lessons accompanied with budding romance! I’ll miss it so much😭

Pairings: Established Kondo/Hijikata Rating: T Summary: He’s a demon and he’s committed and he loves the commander...but something tells Hijikata that these things alone could never be enough. [AO3]
This story takes place after episode eight of Reimeiroku, when Hijikata and Sannan return covered in blood from fighting the ronin who used their name to extort money. The prompt was patching each other up.
for @sabinasanfanfic
Tumblr media
.*Enough*.
He sat in seiza beside his desk with slumped shoulders and languid posture.
The reflection in the silver-framed looking glass Hijikata held was unsightly, and not just from the augmenting bruise that defiled an ever flawless complexion. His eyes narrowed at their own image, staring beyond the mirror and searching so much further—so much deeper—than that which could be superficially perceived. Fingertips absently raised while he sized up his soul, applying pressure to the wound and drawing out the sensation of pain.
...It stung where he’d been struck, radiated right from the center of his cheek and prickled further and further across sensitive nerves to make the afflicted area seem even larger. And while anyone who wasn’t a glutton for punishment would withdraw his hand at this mounting discomfort, Hijikata proceeded to press steadily further.
In truth, it wasn’t that he wanted or needed to feel it.
He deserved to.
That the action even hurt at all was unnecessary evidence, and yet it was evidence all the same: of once distant nightmares transforming into harsh, tangible reality. He’d dreamed of this particular horror, of approaching the point of no return, on more occasions than his memory could accurately serve. But all they had been were just that—dreams; figments of anxiety running rampant about his subconscious to jolt him awake with tense muscles and a brow beaded in sweat.
Now, however...
Despite how Hijikata wanted to pull his eyes away, he kept them dutifully trained to his reflection...to the darkening purples and reds serving as actual proof and reminder—of insult and failure, of shame and things that were best left unspoken. Yet no matter his wishes and no matter how well guarded he remained, there his misgivings and inadequacies all were, physically written on his face and exposed to any passing glance tossed in his direction.
His hand let up from further exacerbating the injury and dropped to the tatami with a thud.
This wasn’t about him, at least not directly. And that was precisely why the bruise felt more like a raw nerve against cold air.
Whether anything was physically evident or not on Hijikata was moot, as the facts themselves were indisputable either way. The Roshigumi reputation had sunk so far that any kind of refuse could claim it for their own immoral purposes; a band of thugs using their namesake to demand money from merchants hadn’t caused anyone to bat a damn eyelash in question—not the merchants themselves, not the people here in Kyoto. It was likely that not even Aizu would doubt the validity of such a story.
And speaking of their sponsoring overlords, how quickly had the news of extortion reached them? Surely, Matsudaira-ko's¹ inner circle was already privy to it at this point. But if more bad news reached the Protector of Kyoto himself, then...
A choppy exhale left Hijikata's lips.
He hadn't bothered removing his haori, still stained in blood that both was and wasn’t his own...hadn't bothered removing the hachigane² from his forehead or treating the consequently acquired bumps and scrapes; trifle tasks, each of them, when pitted against an engrossing cocktail of dread and failure. And culpability. ...And remorse.
The list of emotion wavered and wore on and on, but the situation in hindsight was certain. Hijikata should have stopped the ronin, made examples of them, sent a damn clear message. Sannan and he had been outnumbered, yes, but that might have been different if they’d agreed to Kondo’s earlier overly cautious suggestion of ramping up patrol numbers. Still, no matter the odds, to fail at protecting the most precious thing of all was...
Disgrace welled further within him, along with the lump in his throat. To fail where it was most dire was unforgivable. Certainly, no one ever wanted to return in defeat, but this was about something infinitely more complicated than wounded pride, or victory or vanquish. What had been at stake was their name and that name, no matter how sullen, was all the Roshigumi had at this point.
Yet, in its simplest form, all it was was a name. If the group became forced to dissolve, everyone in this tight-knit circle of brotherhood could let go and move on with his life—or almost everyone, that was. Surely, the farewells and partings wouldn’t be easy, and Hijikata knew that his current anguish could be empathized with at the surface level. However, no one around him would really understand the true depths of it, or why it now consumed him to a point where it was difficult to breathe.
...Except for one, perhaps. Indeed, there was one capable of fathoming it, just as he fathomed all the other ugly and mysterious pieces that Hijikata kept locked up inside himself. And he was the very same individual who would drag that marred name of Roshigumi, of Miburo³, chained to his ankle for the rest of his life should this campaign end in catastrophic failure.
Naturally, this was about the Roshigumi’s future—as much as it was about Aizu and Kyoto, about Tokugawa loyalty and the greater good that was the state of this beloved country. However, while the tendrils of guilt rose and entwined about each of these dire components, for Hijikata, the seed was rooted in something much more personal than any one of the aforementioned reasons.
It grew from the very fabric of his essence: from celestial soil comprised of vows and loyalty, of ambition and another feeling so profound he couldn’t bear to speak of it openly.
He had referred to it in proxy, though.
"I swear that I'll lift you up and make you this country’s most exalted samurai."
But what arrogance, to have made such a promise without any guarantee or secondary plan...
“I won’t rest, I won’t give up until I see you claim your rightful place as a daimyo.”
And what naive hope, what childlike faith, that if he'd only worked hard enough, then Kondo-san could...
Hijikata’s teeth clenched.
Kondo-san would...
“Kat-chan, I bet my life on you. We’re going to Kyoto. But only if you lead us there. You’re the only one who can.”
He sucked a deep breath and finally jerked his face away from the offensive image in the glass; studying it any longer was as intolerable as it was agonizing, and the situation was already torturous enough.
Everything that had gone wrong tonight served as a painful reminder of how the Roshigumi’s reputation was directly linked to Kondo’s. Serizawa acted on his own accord, had created his own infamy and had absolutely nothing to lose—which made protecting their name more dire than ever. Still knowing that, though, Hijikata had somehow allowed this treasure so precious to slip through his fingers like sand in the wind.
He wouldn’t be the one to ultimately pay for that carelessness, however. That’s what hurt most.
Swallowing hard, he stared across the space of his quarters that had long begun yielding to darkness with the setting sun and wondered.
How much longer could this go on? The rules were put in place to control Serizawa and his lawless faction, but they came too little too late. Damage had already been extensively done by that point and the consequences, exactly like what had occurred this evening, still continued to plague them in the present.
So, how many more chances, how many more miscalculations, how many more blunders could Kondo waltz their way out of with Aizu? How much more dishonor could their name possibly bear until it was beyond salvaging and they were sent back to Edo in disgrace?
...Before Kondo was sent back to Edo in disgrace?
Hijikata’s insistence had done nothing except recklessly raise the stakes of someone else’s life, someone who was dearer to him than any other. It wasn’t as if Kondo needed him for that; he’d already been coined the jewel of Tama before this whole grand scheme took flight, so to even consider his having to face return with dishonor... To think that Hijikata, himself, could be to blame for that...
His forehead met his palm with an unsteady breath. He would fix it, he would fix it all. Hell, he’d kill Serizawa in cold blood if it solved anything. But first and foremost, Hijikata needed to regain his mental bearings and recreate the face he showed to the world, even if that face was currently tarnished from injury.
And as if things couldn’t get any worse, that was when the sound of approaching footsteps reached his ears. Familiar footsteps. The kind he’d often be very pleased to hear, but now dreaded.
In a quiet panic, Hijikata’s hand jolted to deposit the mirror back into its drawer beside his desk.
Of course, he would come. Of course. But why now? Why so soon? Surely the group which converged on their dramatic return from patrol hadn’t disbanded with such haste. Hijikata had used that assumption to his benefit, purposely slipping off while Sannan allowed Yamazaki to treat his wounds and relayed further detail of their encounter to Kondo.
A tightening throat indicated necessity to be alone, to get his emotions under control. Being surrounded by so many observant eyes was perturbing when Hijikata was up against this much mental distress; it’d been imperative to gather his thoughts, and not to mention himself, before he could face anyone properly—especially the man he’d let down most of all.
...especially the man who mattered most.
Hijikata barely had time to smooth out his disheveled attire and rise to his feet before the door slid open without so much an inkling of announcement.
Colors of dusk invaded the inner space immediately, bleeding a jagged strip of light from the entrance to the opposite wall. And there, casting an ominous shadow over that intrusive glow, stood Kondo. The backdrop of sunset obscured the finer details of his features, but Hijikata could clearly make out the clenched jaw and tension in his figure.
“...Toshi.” Despite the harshness of his appearance, Kondo’s voice betrayed it by falling breathy and reverent. He was concerned.
And upon recognizing it, Hijikata felt an overwhelming sense of shame flood through him. It was to be expected. Still, his cheeks burned with mortification and his mouth parted, but all he could manage to do was avert his gaze.
“Sorry for taking off.” The apology left Hijikata quickly, before too much time passed and this exchange became even more awkward. “I was just—”
“—standing around in the dark.” Kondo was fast when he wanted to be. The shoji clapped shut after he stepped over the threshold. “I know.”
For someone who had no formal experience with the trade, the commander made a damn fine politician. Raising a hand, Hijikata idly ran it through his hair and swallowed. Even as dusk settled within the room again, he still couldn’t bring himself to look at the silhouette converging on him. “I needed to clean up. To get myself—”
Hijikata’s breath caught mid-excuse and his eyes widened as Kondo lashed out, with heavy palms hitting his shoulders and fingers curling inward to seize. A forceful haul had him stumbling forward and colliding directly with a strong chest, while warm arms immediately wrapped him up.
Hijikata’s lungs stilled and his back went ramrod straight. “My uniform,” he rasped, pushing against Kondo to put space between them, but found himself only embraced tighter. “There’s blood on it, you’ll—”
“I know,” Kondo stressed. “I don’t care.”
“You should.”
“I do.” A beat. “About what’s important.”
And that was what finally had Hijikata’s voice breaking into a soft whine, what had the ice in his veins melting and his tenacious defenses disintegrating to dust. “...Kat-chan.” He’d meant to say more afterward, but a soft hush whispered into his ear made Hijikata settle for otherwise, at least in the meantime. His hands lifted and took purchase of Kondo’s haori, fingertips flexing into the material while staring across the ever-growing darkness.
“It’s gonna be okay,” Kondo breathed and nuzzled him. “We’ll get through it. I’ll take care of it. You don’t have to worry.”
Hijikata’s eyes closed tightly and he held his breath again. Nothing about this was even remotely fair. How had he gone from wayward despairing to the comfort of Kondo’s embrace in a matter of seconds?
Though personal risk existed, Hijikata wasn’t the individual who had everything on the line here. So why should Kondo be the one soothing him now and saying all the right things? Why was Kondo always the one to clean up all the messes and run around doting on everyone, with warm arms and gentle smiles and kind words?
And he always knew, too, what Hijikata needed to hear and when he needed to hear it, without so much of a tiny verbal clue.
These thoughts kicked him back into form, gave him the slap he needed. “Kat-chan, please.” Hijikata began to push away, but stopped before their eyes could meet. “This is—it’s my—” A pause, and he finally settled for, “I’m sorry.”
Kondo’s reply was immediate, and rumbled deep within in his chest. “Don’t be.”
“You don’t even...” Hijikata’s chin lifted so they could finally see each other. “You don’t even know what the hell I’m tryin’ to apologize for.”
Pursing his lips, Kondo shook his head. “Doesn’t matter.” His hands wandered up to undo the white knot of the hachigane and he pulled it free from Hijikata’s forehead. “There’s no injury to pardon...unless.” Kondo licked his lips, and then added softly, “Unless we’re talking about this one...” His thumb gently grazed over the bruised cheek and Hijikata turned his face to the side.
“You didn’t let Yamazaki-kun treat your wounds.”
“Kat-chan.” Hijikata’s tone was dry and serious as he kept his focus on the shoji—and the conversation on topic. “I really let you down tonight.” When he felt Kondo shift, presumably to offer protest, he insisted, “I did.” Hijikata’s gaze snapped back and with resolve, he shook his head. “But never again.”
Kondo remained quiet for several moments, before he relented with a gentle nod. “All right. If that’s what you needed to say...but, Toshi...” He hesitated and looked down to the point where their chests touched. “For what it’s worth, you never have.” The scoff went ignored and then Kondo’s attention lifted to his again. “And I know you never will.”
Silence permeated the room as the inner corners of Hijikata’s brows raised and he simply stared. “How can you just...say that?” he demanded over an incredulous breath. “After tonight when I clearly—how—?”
“Because you always try so hard. You always do so much.” Kondo stroked over the uninjured cheek, brushed loose hair away. “And you always, always blame yourself, especially when you’re not at fault.” He drew Hijikata into another embrace. “It’s all enough, Toshi.” After remaining like this for several moments, Kondo hugged him just a little tighter. “I promise. You’re enough.”
At that the air was stolen from Hijikata’s lungs once more, and he stared unblinking and stiff over a broad shoulder. Only after withdrawing far enough to press a kiss to his slightly parted lips had Kondo finally released him.
...And before Hijikata could manage crafting any semblance of a coherent reply, which wasn’t guaranteed anyway, the topic was immediately switched.
“So, how about this? We get that lamp going to have some light in here. You get out of those clothes.” A hand ran down Hijikata’s sleeve and gave a tug. “Meanwhile, I’ll go find something to treat that bruise of yours. And then...” Kondo’s lips twitched upward and almost pleadingly, he asked, “you’ll help me come up with a speech filled with valid excuses and lots of praise to deliver to Matsudaira-ko in the morning?”
After a few pensive seconds, Hijikata blinked and his chin fell with a single nod. That reply he’d lamented over not having earlier still hadn’t presented itself by this point either. So, with that, they both set off into their respective assigned duties.
The dirtied garments were stripped free like physical manifestations of guilt, leaving Hijikata’s body as the blame left his soul—and with each blood-stained piece removed, he felt lighter and lighter.
Certainly, the barrage of negative emotions which engulfed him earlier hadn’t disappeared, but his strength rebuilt itself to fight them back into their dark corners. Who had time to brood when Kondo believed in him so strongly, when Kondo needed him in top form now more than ever?
As Hijikata tied fresh hakama about his hips, a kaleidoscope of feelings battled for his attentions but the one that screamed loudest was determination; therefore, that was the inner voice he decided to listen to, when everything else was just...noise.
He was enough, after all.
The straps were given a strong yank.
Roshigumi.
Hijikata would fight to protect this name and all it stood for. He would fight to protect the man it represented. And he would love that man with all he had—love him so much that it would turn him into a daimyo, no matter what the hell happened here in Kyoto or anywhere for that matter.
Just as Hijikata finished smoothing out the clean attire he’d donned, Kondo returned with a towel tossed over his shoulder. A tray with three onigiri and tea had been balanced on a shallow basin, and he shut the shoji with his foot.
“I know you were too busy before to eat, what with hanging out in the dark all alone.” Kondo placed dinner on the desk, and Hijikata could hear him trying not to laugh while he spoke. “...so I took the liberty. In any case!” He turned back with a grin. “Lemme tend to that wound, yeah?”
“You know, Serizawa’s mouth is never gonna stop if you insist on running around like a servant instead of a commander...Commander.”
To that, Hijikata barely heard Kondo mumble in response, but it sounded dangerously close to, “heh, that’s my Toshi.” An unaffected shrug followed. “Let him.” Kondo pulled the cloth off his shoulder and held it out with another soft twitch of his lips.
Hijikata observed the growing smile aimed directly at him until his lashes fell, along with his chin. He could argue further and object, continue to voice complaint and lecture on and on about setting examples. Or, he could boot Kondo out and attempt working through his misgivings alone with a clearer perspective.
But if only for now...if only for this moment...
Hijikata’s eyes opened and he relented with a dramatic sigh. “I can’t best you, can I?”
They both fell into seiza.
“Not sure about that,” Kondo offered, submerging the towel and then wringing it out. “In any case, I prefer you right here. Next to me.” He even possessed the gall to look up after that declaration.
Lashes went wide and blush heated cheeks. “Sh...Shut up.”
Alas, at Kondo’s side was exactly where Hijikata remained.
And when the next morning bathed the world in fresh sunlight, his knees hit the tatami in time with his commander’s, directly before Matsudaira Katamori.
“I understand the situation,” Matsudaira said with no disapproval or anger in his tone. “Kondo, raise your head. I would give you something. Perhaps it helps.”
A scroll was handed to an attendant, and the attendant placed it in Kondo’s waiting open palms. When given permission to look, he carefully unraveled it. And there on that paper, in the Protector of Kyoto’s own penmanship, was a new name.
Shinsengumi.
The breath left Kondo’s chest, and he simply marveled before rolling this invaluable gift back up and clutching it with possession. Lowering his head, his voice was rife with emotion when he promised, “I will defend this name’s honor with my life.”
And still bowing beside him, Hijikata made a silent vow all on his own—something similar to Kondo’s, but also a little deeper than what could be seen at the surface.
Such was his way. That was how he loved. And some might’ve found that difficult to swallow.
But where it truly mattered...Hijikata’s lashes parted and he stole a glance at Kondo. It was enough.
Thank you for reading! I’m no authority on anything but here are some footnotes, just in case:

Happy Birthday, Sabinaaaaaaa!!!
@sabinasanfanfic Here’s a small collab from me and Taicho! I hope you like it.
Kondo’s eye was drawn to the apartment door opposite his and Hijikata’s the moment he stepped into the corridor. It stood wide open, and to Kondo’s knowledge, nobody had lived there in months. He contemplated investigating, but knew he had to meet Souji in the lobby soon. Before he could make up his mind, the elevator doors swung open and two young men staggered out, their many suitcases overloading their arms.
“Hold on there,” he called out, rushing toward them. “You look like you could use a hand.”
A breathless ‘yes’ could be heard from somewhere behind all the luggage, and Kondo reached out to grab the topmost bags. Sparkling blue eyes met his golden ones, and a large grin split a rather beautiful face.
“Thank you!” the young man said with a heavy accent, stepping into the hall. “Yuri, can you manage?” he tossed over his shoulder, drawing Kondo’s eye to the shorter man standing just behind the first.
“I think so...” came the faint reply.
Kondo reached out and grabbed another suitcase, this time from the smaller man, and then turned toward the vacant apartment. The three moved forward as one, with Kondo in the lead and Yuri bringing up the rear. They dumped all the suitcases and bags in the center of the living room, and the new renters both turned to thank their new neighbor.
“Thank you so much! I’m Viktor Nikiforov and this is Yuri...Yuri Katsuki.”
Kondo smiled at each man as he grasped their hands. “Isami Kondo. I live just across the hall.” He paused as he looked around the nearly empty apartment. “Is your furniture being delivered later today?”
“Oh,” Viktor chuckled and gave Yuri a sheepish glance. “Actually, we thought we would try—how do they say?—‘roughing it’? — for a day or two.” He waved to their pile of belongings. “We planned to go shopping this weekend.”
Eyes twinkling with enthusiasm, Kondo smiled when he spotted the bedrolls that had fallen off to one side. He pointed them out and asked, “So, you’ll be camping...inside?”
“Exactly!” Viktor said eagerly, his eyes widening with delight. “This will be new for me as well as for Yuri! It’s very exciting, don’t you think?”
Chuckling at the thought of Toshi camping out, Kondo could only nod his agreement. He was about to say his goodbyes, to allow the young men to get their things in order, when he heard a very familiar voice calling from the hall.
“Kondo-saaaaan, where are you? We’re going to be late.”
“Ah, Souji!” Kondo called, hearing the tap on his door. He stuck his head into the corridor to let his young protégé know where he was. “Sorry about that. I was helping our new neighbors. Come say hello!”
Souji sauntered over, his expression guarded. Kondo knew that look, knew that Souji was reluctant to meet new people, but he tried to get the younger man out of his shell whenever possible. Smiling brightly, he clapped a hand on Souji’s shoulder and turned to face the couple.
“This is Souji Okita. I’ve taken care of him since he was just a little thing; he’s basically my son,” Kondo said with pride, tousling the younger man’s hair. “Souji, these gentlemen are just moving in! Viktor...” He struggled to pronounce the family name.
“Nikiforov,” Viktor supplied with a smile, holding out his hand.
Souji ignored it and moved his eyes to the last man in the room. “And who are you?” he asked.
“Ah....um, Yuri; Yuri Katsuki. Pleased to meet you,” he added with a small bow.
Smiling at each young man in turn, Kondo’s eyes widened as a thought came to him. “Why don’t you two join Souji and me for lunch?” There was a strangled noise to his left, and he glanced at Souji with concern. “You aren’t getting sick, are you? Maybe we should do this another day....”
“No, no....I’m...fine,” Souji muttered, eyeing the two men who were intruding upon his time with Kondo.
Kondo gave him a quick once-over, unsure of Souji’s truthfulness, but he let it slide. Turning back to Viktor and Yuri, he beamed. “What do you say? You can have one good meal before you start your adventure!”
Looking to Yuri for his thoughts, Viktor took in his expression and then smiled ruefully at Kondo.
“We’d better pass on that. We have so much to do!! Perhaps another time?”
“Of course, of course....I can see that you’ll be busy unpacking. Well, it was nice to meet you both.”
With a wave of his hand, Kondo bowed and then scooted Souji into the corridor.
“Kondo-san, do you know anything about those guys? I mean, they could be vandals or criminals or something.”
Laughing aloud, Kondo moved them both toward the elevator. “You’ve always had the most vivid imagination! I’m sure they’re just your normal, everyday couple. They were very pleasant.”
Souji grumbled under his breath, but dropped the subject. Instead, he leaned against the elevator’s back panel and crossed his arms. He knew there was no point in saying more; and he didn’t want to waste time on them when he had Kondo-san to himself. It was rare that Kondo-san took a day off, and he planned on enjoying as much time with him as possible...without Hijikata-san, or two dumb strangers.
The elevator reached the first floor and both men stepped into the lobby together. Kondo threw his arm around Souji’s shoulder as they approached the exit, and asked, “What’s with that frown? Surely you aren’t that hungry?”
“Heh, yeah, I guess I am,” Souji replied, pushing all thought of anybody else out of his head.
***
When the door closed behind their new neighbor and his son, Viktor turned to smile down at Yuri, who was rummaging through their bags with a slight frown creasing his brow. His shoulders were hunched, and the tension in his body was palpable.
Kneeling down, Viktor placed a hand over Yuri’s to still them. “What’s wrong, love?”
Looking away, Yuri shrugged. “I thought we should unpack.”
“There’s plenty of time to do this. We should rest, da?”
“I don’t think that young man cared for us much, Viktor,” he stated quietly.
“You’ve only just met him, Yuri. That can’t be what’s causing your distress. Tell me,” he said, brushing a wayward strand of hair from the younger man’s face.
“Are we doing the right thing? Moving here, I mean? Giving up your position with Yakov, leaving behind your career...”
“Yuuuuuuri,” Viktor interrupted. “We have talked about this before. I’m not giving up my career; I’m changing to something new! Are you...having second thoughts?”
“N-no! No, not at all, it’s not that. I just...feel like I’m taking you away from the world, sometimes,” Yuri admitted.
“I don’t want to belong to the world, solnishko.” Viktor leaned forward and lifted Yuri’s chin, looking earnestly into his eyes. “I only want to belong to you.”
Yuri blinked up at him and then smiled tenderly, reaching out to cup Viktor’s cheek. “Thank you...”
Eyes widening in surprise, Viktor leaned back. “Why are you thanking me?”
“For being you.”
Viktor broke into a huge grin and reached out suddenly to grab Yuri around the waist. Drawing him close, he buried his face in his shoulder and murmured, “You are my joy, Yuuuuuri.”
“Viiiiktor,” Yuri groaned, his cheeks flushed.
Laughing out loud, Viktor fell backward into the pile of bags, dragging Yuri with him. Looking up into his eyes, he cupped Yuri’s face with both hands.
“Let’s take a nap, da? And then we’ll go exploring!”
“I hope we’re at least going to set out the bedrolls...” Yuri teased, wrestling to sit up.
They picked up both mattresses and made their way to the largest bedroom. Yuri began laying them out, but Viktor stopped him.
“Let’s just use yours as extra padding and put mine on top! Our first nap in our new home should not be in separate spaces.”
Although he blushed to his ears, Yuri quickly nodded his agreement and the pair worked together to finish the job. As Yuri tucked the last corner of the sheet under the mattress, Viktor extended a hand.
“Come here, love.” He flopped down and pulled Yuri close. “There isn’t much room! I guess we’ll just have to cuddle.”
“That doesn’t sound so terrible to me,” Yuri said, smiling down at him. He leaned in and pressed his lips to Viktor’s.
“Never terrible,” Viktor agreed, tracing his finger across along Yuri’s jaw.
They shifted around until both were lying on their sides, Yuri with his back pressed to Viktor’s chest. In minutes, Yuri heard the tell-tale sounds of light snoring, and he turned his head slightly to confirm that Viktor had fallen asleep. Snuggling closer, Yuri placed a hand over the arm that held him fast, and stared at the wall across the way. It always amazed him, how quickly Viktor could succumb to sleep. Yuri had never been able to do so, his mind always working in fast circles to keep him awake well into the night.
Now was no different, and his thoughts moved swiftly from light-hearted to heavy as he took in all the implications of their move. It had been Viktor’s idea, leaving behind both of their hometowns to start a new life together; ‘A new life in a new place all our own’ was how Viktor had phrased it, and Yuri had leapt at the chance.
But now Yuri worried about so many things. When all the newness wore off, but would Viktor still be happy with his choice? Could Yuri ever be enough to compensate for all Viktor would lose? How could Viktor possibly be satisfied with leaving behind a career that made him a legend?
Yuri felt the knot in his stomach tightening. He had no doubt that Viktor loved him, but worried whether or not that love was deserved. Letting out a resigned sigh, his eyes squeezed shut. Yuri would just have to make sure that every moment of Viktor's time with him was happy. He'd do his best to make that happen.
***
Hijikata opened the door to his and Kondo’s apartment and froze. His husband was not alone. Standing next to him, holding a bowl of salad, was a tall, platinum-haired stranger, eyes shining with joy. Beside him, another stranger stood quietly off to the side, a small smile gracing his lips.
“Toshi! Welcome home,” Kondo called, striding forward and engulfing him in a swift embrace. He helped him out of his jacket and then led him further into the room.
“Let me introduce our new neighbors! They’re both famous ice skaters! This is Viktor Nikiforov, and his fiancé, Yuri Katsuki.”
Hijikata took the slender hand offered to him by Viktor and then turned to shake the one extended by Yuri. He cast a quick glance at Kondo, who had resumed setting the table. Sensing Hijikata’s stare, Kondo looked up with a sheepish grin.
“I met them earlier today, just before my lunch with Souji. They’re without furniture until this weekend, so I invited them to supper.”
“Isami taught me how to make this beautiful salad!” Viktor chimed in, beaming at Hijikata.
“I...see,” Hijikata responded slowly, looking from Viktor to Kondo and back again.
“And they provided the wine,” Kondo added, waving a hand toward the kitchen counter, where the alcohol had been set in a bucket of ice.
“Yuri and I toured the city this afternoon and found the cutest little store,” Viktor added, slinging an arm around his fiancé.
Seeing Hijikata’s expression, Kondo broke in and said, “Why don’t you go wash up, Toshi? Dinner will be ready in just a moment.”
“Excuse me,” Hijikata said to the group, and then headed toward the bath.
Kondo watched him go, a wistful smile on his face. Viktor followed Kondo’s gaze and then looked down to Yuri with an unreadable expression, planting a kiss on top of the younger man’s head. Glancing up, Yuri smiled.
“We should finish setting the table,” he said, brushing his fingers against Viktor’s hand before pulling away.
Just as the last spoon was laid on the table, Hijikata returned, his work suit replaced with a pair of slacks and black turtleneck sweater. Kondo’s eyes lit up when he saw him, and Viktor looked from one to the other with a smile. They each took their seats and began passing plates to be filled with the soba noodle salad Viktor and Kondo had prepared. Yuri poured wine in each glass and delivered it to each person.
Settling into the meal, the four men talked of their work and travels, and the evening passed quickly, with Viktor refreshing drinks each time a glass was emptied. Before long, Yuri’s cheeks began to flush, and Viktor slowed his beverages, knowing that the younger man wouldn’t want to make a scene. Viktor noticed that Kondo had also slowly moved Hijikata’s glass to the side and replaced it with a mug of coffee. Resting his chin on the palm of his hand, Viktor listened as Kondo regaled them with stories of his and Hijikata’s first year in the city.
“Let’s see, that was about five years ago, right Toshi?” Kondo asked.
Leaning back in his chair, a soft smile tugging at his lips, Hijikata replied, “I really don’t think they want to hear about our old misadventures, Kat-chan.”
“Oh?” Kondo asked, his face falling in disappointment.
“Of course we do!” Viktor chimed in excitedly. Turning to Yuri, he added, “Don’t we, love?”
Laughing at his fiancé’s pleading expression, Yuri agreed, though he gave Hijikata a rueful smile. “I think we’ve created a monster bringing two romantics together.”
Huffing his concurrence, Hijikata could only shake his head and stare at his husband with fond amusement. Picking up his empty plate, he pushed himself away from the table and began gathering the others’ dishes.
“Let’s at least move to more comfortable seating,” he said, thrusting his chin toward the couch and loveseat.
Kondo rose to his feet immediately, reaching to grab the remaining dishes, but Yuri beat him to it.
"I'll get these! Please let me help Hijikata-san while you and Viktor get comfortable. It's the least we can do for the delicious meal."
Quickly agreeing with the plan, both Viktor and Kondo moved toward the sitting area, the former perching on the edge of the loveseat, eagerly anticipating more stories. Kondo watched as Hijikata placed the dishes in the sink and Yuri began to run water to rinse them.
“Save that for later!” he called out, waving both men over. “There’s no hurry and poor Nikiforov-san is waiting so patiently.”
Laughing, Yuri glanced at the aforementioned ‘patient’ man, who was so filled with anticipation he looked about ready to leap from his seat. Hijikata tossed the washcloth he’d picked up onto the counter and gave a small shrug as he walked into the living room with Yuri on his heels.
“We best not argue. Kondo-san doesn’t like to be kept waiting when he has stories to tell,” he teased, sitting on the couch next to his husband.
“Toshi! That isn’t true.” Tossing his head back, Kondo laughed—a big booming sound that had the other three men smiling in amusement.
“So, you said you’ve lived here nearly five years?” Yuri asked, drawing their attention.
“Yes! And believe me, that first year had its ups and downs. I remember our first time taking the subway...”
Hijikata groaned and swept a hand across his brow. “I can’t believe you’re starting with that one,” he muttered.
“But that’s the very beginning!”
Viktor and Yuri exchanged quick glances, both smiling at the familiarity of the scene.
“What happened on the subway?” Viktor prodded, earning another small groan from Hijikata.
A chuckle preceded the continuation of the story as Kondo leaned forward. “Well, you see, we either hopped on the wrong line, or got off at the wrong landing—we still haven’t discovered which—but, whatever the case, we were hopelessly lost. It was dark, cloudy...not a pleasant prospect for walking, but there we were, traipsing through one of the seedier parts of the city. Toshi was not happy, to say the least,” Kondo remembered fondly, sneaking a quick peek at his husband.
“Who would have been?!” Hijikata exclaimed, though there was no heat behind his words.
“OOH but it sounds perfectly romantic!” Viktor cried, clapping his hands together.
“See???” Kondo was in complete agreement.
Yuri and Hijikata shook their heads and exchanged knowing glances; it would be futile to argue with their counterparts. Settling back, they resigned themselves to listening with amused exasperation.
“So, as I was saying,” Kondo continued with a side-glance to Hijikata, “we were lost in a very unsavory part of town, and just when we thought it couldn’t get worse, it starts to rain—and not just a light summer drizzle; it was coming down in buckets!” Kondo stopped for a moment, trying his best to control the laughter that wanted to escape him.
“Go on, then,” Hijikata said with a slight roll of his eyes. “Don’t stop on my account.”
“Well, you see....Toshi has this thing about his hair...”
“OOOH! Yes, that would be very bad!” Viktor said, sympathetically.
“Viktor has a thing with his hair, too,” Yuri contributed, patting his lover’s hand. He and Kondo shared a quick grin while their respective loves huffed almost petulantly.
“So, there we are, dashing through unknown streets, and both of us look like drowned rats. All the buildings are either boarded up, or dark inside, so we have nowhere to go to get out of the rain. Suddenly, right before us, this light appears!”
Viktor’s attention was drawn to Hijikata, who was watching Kondo with obvious affection, a small twitch of his lips the only indication that he was enjoying the story as much as his husband. Or, Viktor thought, perhaps it was just the excited way in which Kondo spoke that drew such loving looks.
“...and there, right in the middle of all those run-down buildings was this charming little restaurant! We go inside, just to dry off, to be honest. But the food! Ah, remember, Toshi?? The smells! I don’t know if it was because we were cold and tired, but I’d never smelled anything so wonderful.”
The two men gazed at each other, lost in the memory of that night, and Viktor turned to Yuri with a huge smile.
“Such a beautiful story, da, solnishko?” he whispered so as not to interrupt the other couple’s moment.
Yuri nodded his agreement, his eyes sparkling with the idea of something like that happening with Viktor. After a small span of time passed, Kondo cleared his throat and looked sheepishly toward his guests.
“We still go there every year. It’s a reminder for us. No matter how bad something might look, there’s always something good around the corner!” He beamed out at his audience and was not disappointed by the reception.
Viktor clapped, his face flushed from the excitement of the story-telling. Yuri grinned, both at Kondo for his anecdote and at Viktor for his reaction to it. He couldn’t imagine loving a person more in that moment, and he could see why Hijikata cared for his husband as well. The two were  very similar, to some degree.
The group chatted a bit more, but when Hijikata could no longer hold back his yawns, the younger men rose to their feet as one.
“We’ve had a wonderful evening, Isami-san, Toshi-san!” Viktor cooed. “Thank you for letting us join you!”
“Yes, thank you both,”  Yuri added, as they made their way to the door.
Kondo walked them across the hall, a hand on each shoulder. “If you boys need anything, let us know!”
***
Entering their apartment, Yuri felt himself relax. It wasn’t that he hadn’t enjoyed the time spent in his neighbors’ company—he had, very much. But it was always his nature to hold himself back, to worry too much, to overthink things. Here, in his own space, he would let go and truly just be himself. It was one of the things that he found so utterly amazing about Viktor. He didn’t have to hide his true self when they were together. Viktor accepted him as he was, faults and all.
What Yuri struggled with was feeling worthy of that acceptance. If he were to compare his faults to Viktor’s, there was no way he could ever measure up. And now, having seen the obvious love shared between Isami-san and Toshizo-san—the perfectly balanced relationship they had—Yuri worried that Viktor would start realizing that as well.
“Yuri!” Viktor called, breaking into his thoughts. “Where were you just now, love? You were a million miles away.” He came up behind Yuri and wrapped his arms around his waist.
Turning his head to Viktor, Yuri smiled up at him. “I was just thinking about our neighbors.”
“Aren’t they precious?” Viktor cried softly. “They’re so in loooove!”
“Yes, it’s very evident.”
Viktor cocked his head to one side, the tone in Yuri’s voice just a bit off. “Something wrong, Yuri?”
“Hmm? Oh, no. I’m just tired. It’s been a long day.”
“Yes it has,” Viktor replied, though he didn’t look completely convinced that lack of sleep was really the issue. “Let’s go to bed, da?”
Yuri turned in Viktor’s arms and hugged him close. “I love you, Vitya,” he whispered.
His expression softening, Viktor brushed his fingers through Yuri’s hair. “I love you too, solnishko.”
They walked to their bedroom, hand in hand, but Yuri sensed Viktor was watching him. Not wanting to bring down the mood, he squeezed Viktor’s hand and ran his thumb over his palm. Viktor beamed down at him.
“I want to get lost and walk in the rain and find a restaurant that can be our restaurant, Yuri!” he stated with excitement, his eyes round. “Do you know that I see us when I look at them, love? In five years, we’ll be telling our new neighbors the same stories, with the same expressions...” Viktor sighed happily at the thought.
“Let’s go shopping tomorrow. Maybe we’ll get lost along the way,” Yuri said, suddenly, his heart light.
“I want to get lost right now,” Viktor declared, feathering his lips along Yuri’s jaw.
Breath hitching, Yuri cupped his fiancé’s face, drawing him in for a fiery kiss. “Make love to me,” he whispered with a voice full of want.
Across the hall, another voice murmured the same message with the same need. And his lover responded much as Viktor did; leading him to their bed with a tender smile and a gentle hand at the small of his back.

Is He Really a Knight?
Here’s the first part of my dream, Knight!Souji ^^
Uh, watch out for language?  ---++----
He stared deep into her eyes, professing his love through his lips rather than words. “Princess…”
 “Yes, my Knight?”
Her eyes were eating up each word like she did when she saw truffles on a chocolate platter. She was so into her book, she forgot she existed, which is why she felt someone’s breath on her neck, she dropped her book and screamed. She glared up at the one responsible for losing her place. “Souji-kun!”
He was laughing so hard he was clutching his sides. “You should’ve seen your face, Hime-sama.” He always said it so mockingly, it bothered her. She WAS royalty, she didn’t know why he always treated her title like a joke. “Though, that was getting pretty steamy, a romance between a knight and his princess? Are you hoping for something in real life, Etsu-chan?”
How demeaning…But she actually didn’t mind it when he said it, not that she was going to let him know…he already teased her enough! “I am not. I’m just reading, it doesn’t have to mean anything.” Though she did wish for a romance as cheesy and lovely in the books she read. She was a romantic, she couldn’t help it. During her lessons, she’d daydream and her tutor, a man that looked rather kind, but had a sharp tongue despite his soft tone, would chide her for doing so. “Well, did you need something, my oh-so-noble Knight?”
“Yes, actually, Isami-sama is asking for your presence. The King wants to discuss something with the both of you.”
She puffed her cheeks in annoyance, picking up her book and stomping after him. She and Isami-oniisama did not have the best relationship with the King, their father. They didn’t see eye to eye. Their father was a greedy, old bastard that wanted nothing but war and to pillage villages and kingdoms to claim them in the name of the Shinsengumi Kingdom. She wished her older brother would take the throne for himself; hell, if he decided to overthrow the King, the whole kingdom would be behind him!
Souji walked beside her, feeling her anger. He knew what she thought of the King, since they’d vented to each other. Isami-sama deserved the throne so much more than the King did. His loyalty didn’t rest on the crown, it rested on Isami-sama.
Etsu pushed open the doors to the throne room rather loudly. She couldn’t voice her displeasure , but she sure as hell could show it in different ways. “Ah, Etsu!” Her older brother smiled kindly, beckoning her to stand next to him.
She smiled at him and stood next to him, giving the King a rushed curtsy. She could see Sannan-san make a slight face of displeasure off to the side, but he gave her a light smile when she glanced over at him.
Souji took his place in the back with the other Knights, next to General Hijikata.
“I have an announcement to make.” The King stood up, making his way down from the throne to stand in front of the Prince and Princess. “Etsu, you will be getting married to Kazama Kingdom’s heir, Prince Chikage.”
The whole throne room was silent. Sannan actually flinched ever so lightly, before she started yelling, “What the hell are you talking about?! I did not agree to this!”
Isami held her arm to keep her from going forward. Just like their father, she’d inherited his temper, though she rarely showed it. Honestly, she was a sweet girl, she didn’t like being angry, but towards their father, she had nothing but anger towards him. He knew her dream was to marry someone she loved, so the fact that he was taking away that choice…it was no wonder that she was having such a strong reaction. “Etsu…”
“You will marry whoever I choose, girl! You are the Princess of the Shinsengumi Kingdom, and thus, you will marry whoever I choose to benefit us!” His voice boomed.
“I will not! You cannot make me marry! I refuse to marry anyone you’ve chosen for me!” She escaped Isami-oniisama’s grasp and marched up to him, glaring into his eyes. “You can make me dress, make me take lessons, decide what I eat, but I will not allow you to decide my future husband!”
His strength was strong that when he struck her across the cheek, it caused her to fall.
Souji immediately clutched the hilt of his silver and emerald encrusted sword. Hajime lifted his arm in front of him, shaking his head. It took him a few moments to release his sword.
Isami helped her up, his eyebrows furrowing in anger. “Father, if you lay a hand on my little sister again, I shall not stand for it.”
“This child must know her place! Should you raise your sword against me, there will be grave consequences. My decision is final. I will be sending you to Kazama Kingdom next week. Be prepared.”
Etsu continued glaring at him as her older brother pulled her out of the throne room, being followed by a few advisers and his circle of knights.
“Etsu, are you all right?” Isami examined her cheek, looking at her slightly swollen cheek.
“That son of a b-” Sanosuke clamped Shinpachi’s mouth.
“Shinpachi! We’re out in the halls, we don’t know who could be listening.” He hissed.
Shinpachi muttered curses under his breath.
Isami led them all to his office, the only place in the castle that had been soundproofed, thanks to Sannan. They were safe to speak freely there, and they really needed to at a time like this.
“That fucking son of bitch!” Shinpachi exploded as soon as the door closed. He rushed over to Etsu, taking her face in his large hands. “How dare he lay a hand on our ‘Jou-sama!?”
Her cheeks were dusted with a light pink. “Sh-Shinpachi-san…My cheek hurts…”
He quickly released her. “Oh, sorry, ‘Jou-sama!”
“Shinpatsu-san! Why are you touching Hime-sama!? Are you trying to cop a feel or somethin’?! We ain’t gonna stand for that!”
“Oi, Heisuke! I was concerned for our ‘Jou-sama!”
Isami cleared his throat. “Yamazaki-kun, could you give her something for her cheek?”
“I have something that could reduce the swelling.” Susumu pulled out a chair for her and took out a little bottle.
 “Thank you, Susumu-kun.”
“Isami-san,” Toshizō crossed his arms. “I don’t like bringing it up, but maybe this is the perfect opportunity…” To overthrow the King.
Etsu nodded furiously. “Yes, I agree! Oniisama, are you going to let me get married against my will? Send off your little sister to the arms and Kingdom of an unknown man?” She looked up at him with puppy eyes.
“Etsu…” He sighed. “It’s not such an easy decision…We need men, supplies, allies…”
“Isami-sama is correct. If we stage this revolution without considering every angle, every possible scenarios, we could be seen as traitors to the crown and executed.” Sannan spoke up, pushing up his round glasses.
“Considering we only have a week until Etsu leaves, you might want to make a decision as soon as possible, Isami-sama.” Souji spoke up, resting his hand on the hilt of his sword. “Please let me have the honor of killing him.”
“Souji…” Isami sighed, placing his palms on his desk. “I need to think about this and talk it over with Toshi and Sannan-kun.”
 Everyone bowed, exiting the office.
Etsu quickly walked off to her library with Souji following at her heels. “Souji-kun,” She stopped walking. “If…Oniisama chooses to leave things be, and I am forced to leave…” She was forced to admit that there was something unspoken between the two of them. They’d grown up together, know each other so well they could easily read each other. “…What would you do?”
 “Follow Isami-sama’s orders.”
She turned around so quickly that she stepped on her skirt of her dress, almost falling back. Almost.
Souji’s arms were around her waist, bringing her close to him to keep her from falling. It was a force of habit. She was never careful where she stepped.
Her brown eyes stared up at him, her hands on his shoulders. “…Would you really?” She whispered. “Let me marry someone…else?”

Chapter 23:  All The Help She’d Get
Mia’s & Eisuke’s World “I think this is a mistake.” Mia stares at the reflection of Eisuke as his back is facing her.
“I rarely make any mistake.” He says coldly, “And your opinion isn’t required on this matter.”
It never is! Mia internally screams her remarks, no one ever values her opinion, they never bother asking because her thoughts don’t matter. She has no say- not in the matter of getting caged and sold in a black market auction, or taking her time to digest the shock and confusion before choosing her NEW OWNER and most definitely never has the choice of being involved in so many troubles.
She hasn’t asked for any of it, she always bites her lips and accepts her fate because she believes everything happens for a reason and each painful experience is just as precious as the rest. Being an unexpected highlight of that auction has miraculously led her to Eisuke, the one man who’s misunderstood by many yet she sees right through him at critical times.
“Let the others find him!” She clings to him from behind, begging him not to go because this is one of those times. Something is not right and if she’d feel this is a trap, so does Eisuke.
His hands rest on hers, squeezing them for a few seconds before pulling them away. “He’s my father.”
“You don’t even know if he will be there or if they have actual information on him.”
“Yes, they do.” His hands back on his tie while his eyes stay on her. “I need to know the truth. He’s my father. Aren’t you the one who goes on all the time about how important family is?”
“I am your family, Eisuke. And I’m your…….” Her argument trails off, who is she to him? His woman, his girlfriend, his fiancée? They haven’t exactly put a tag on it and Eisuke hasn’t even once mentioned about their future, does he intend to make her Mrs. Ichinomiya or she’ll see someone else takes her place over some business deals while Eisuke makes her stay? It is very possible, Mia knows that deep in her heart, she simply chooses not to think about it. But right now, she’s not exactly convincing.
“He’s my family.” He clears his throat then draws a long, shaky breath. “I deserve to know the truth.”
Tumblr media
“But this could get you killed, Eisuke. Just listen to me for once, please!” Her plea makes no difference, as expected. She has lost again, she could never win against him. Not with her concern, morals and certainly not with her love. “I’m your family too.” She murmurs once again, mostly to herself.
All these years of care, tolerance, and understanding, persuading herself that he always has a good reason for whatever he does because the ends justify his means. With that, the bathroom door closes behind her. She needs some space, anywhere free from Eisuke.
“I’ll see you at the party,” he stands by the door frame, “though I prefer to show up together."
Mia sighs, nearly laughing at herself. This is his way of telling her that he’s being understanding, he has changed his preferences for her mood swing.
Standing in front of the mirror with her hands gripping onto the marble sink, she thinks hard. What can she do to stop him? She pulls her hair back into a high ponytail then holds an eye makeup pen up close to her lash line. Who would help her to make it happen? She presses her finger on the outside corner of her eyelid and draws a thin line. Next, she picks up a makeup brush and swirls it in a small container of blushes before dabbing it onto her cheeks. What is Eisuke most afraid of? Picking up a lipstick she carefully applies a deep, glossy red, one that matches her dress perfectly. Eisuke does like her to stand out regardless of the efforts she has spent on staying away from spotlights. It’s simply not possible, not when she’s with Eisuke Ichinomiya.
That’s it!
An idea strike, a brilliant one she would think but perhaps not to others or at least it could only be brilliant with their help. She needs to be careful with her choice of help though, someone who has the knowledge to make it happen and the ability to keep it under everyone’s radar.
Continue from Mika’s World
"Why can’t you be a supportive sister like you should for once?!”
The room is left with dead silence again, honestly, you hate Eisuke’s suite so much! Glaring at your twins with your fists clenched, you don’t even know where to begin. With so much going on and now being accused of a lousy sister really should be the least of your worry. You exhale deeply and huff out in frustration, “Soryu hasn’t waked up yet.” Eying Luke on the side, he nods as confirmation. “I need to find the shooter."
"And I need to stop Eisuke from dying.”
You have to bite your tongue before slipping out something you’d regret. Mia worries a lot and normally you wouldn’t blame her, with the deals and underground businesses of Eisuke’s, she would be insane not to think so. But, death? When Soryu is the actual one lying in bed, the only truth you want to tell your sister is to stop being dramatic but her teary eyes meet yours, whispering out a request you couldn’t ignore. “Please, help me.”
Whatever reasons Mia has, she has persuaded Luke to take part and now you are her only hope.
“Fine,” you mutter, “just text me the essentials, skip me for the planning.” You quickly add then excuse yourself for a conversation you have neither the time nor the energy to engage.
You still need to meet Goto for another dinner party, just how many more of these damn parties do you have to attend before anyone of you are even close to finding who the heck is manipulating this whole orchestra!?
NOTES: NEXT- Takao from MFW again :) Eisuke at auction while the rest try to find the shooter/assassin waitress in the party, oh it’s a masquerade party

Playing Kazama's Route Because I Guess I Hate Myself Part 1: Kyoto Winds
So, I'm going to play through everybody's routes on Hakuoki and vent my feelings and frustrations on here! I've already done Saito and Iba but I will play them again soon, too. Next up is Kazama, mostly because I'm curious to find out if this fucker has any redeeming qualities. Maybe if you're into nonces. Idk.
Wow, I had forgotten how gloriously campy this intro is :') I love it so much!
Playing through the prologue because it sets the tone of blood, death and assholes. This game is much more violent, tragic and much less horny than I had predicted and I guess I'm into that.
Aw, Chizuru bae is so lonesome and vulnerable <3
Kodo flashback! HIIISSSSSSSSSS!!! >:(
Just taking a moment to appreciate how beautiful and romantic the nighttime environment and music is <3 At least, until people start getting slashed up X_X
OKAY GAME, WE GET IT: CHIZURU IS HORNY FOR HIJIKATA. GOD.
Okita is enjoying this waaay too much X_X
Chapter 1
WIGGLE WIGGLE WIGGLE
Thank you for untying me, InouBAE!
THEY'VE BEEN DISCUSSING THE SITUATION SINCE MORNING BUT NOBODY THOUGHT TO SUGGEST MAYBE NOT REVEALING MORE SENSITIVE INFORMATION WHILE I'M IN THE ROOM?! I'm surrounded by idiots -_-
Apparently, "They are all truly gentlemen." Uh-huh.
Hooray for Chizuru calling out Okita for being a douche. And Hijikata for calling everyone a bunch of kids! Where is the lie? :')
Um, why has the camera zoomed in on Nagakura's crotch? Chizuru, please control your thirst. This is a life or death situation.
Now Saito's telling Okita to stop being a prick and Okita's response is, "hehe." X_X
Casual suicide jokes... Reminds me of my friends at uni X_X
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE 8O I can't see how this could possibly backfire...
OMG Kondou describing not recognising a girl as "The shame of a lifetime!" XD
"Maybe it's time you spilled your guts, kid." Is he... Is he telling me to commit seppuku?! O_O "I looked at him and nodded." GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD.
Although, with Harada threatening to strip me, suicide doesn't look like such a bad option X_X Tell me, Inoue, WHERE ARE THESE GENTLEMEN YOU WERE TELLING ME ABOUT?!
Feminist Hijikata wants to kill me regardless of gender :') We stan a woke queen.
Feminist icon Sanan also thinks that gender is irrelevant but doesn't want to kill me because THEIR JOB IS LITERALLY TO PROTECT PEOPLE.
You search so hard for Kodo and he turns out to be such a treacherous snake :'(
Bad feminist Hijikata calls the Shinsengumi "sons of bitches" for feeding me to him as his page. The Shinsengumi are strong, independent bitches in their own right.
Escaping execution but being quietly upset about having to wear ugly boy clothes for the foreseeable future is a mood.
More of Hijikata threatening to cut off Okita's tongue, please!
What does Chizuru have against afternoon drinking :P Clearly she has never enjoyed a long glass of Pimm's on a warm Summer afternoon! I guess she is pretty young...
Hijikata isn't here so can I please sneak out with you guys instead of staring at the wall all day?
Reeeeeeally want to pick the yes to dressing like a girl option but apparently that's not what Daddy Nonce wants :( HE'S NOT EVEN SHOWN UP YET AND HE'S ALREADY RUINING MY FUN! >:(
Well, now we're literally running away from Nagakura and Inoue. I'm getting High School flashbacks.
Wait, why is Heisuke being weird about Saito being in my room? Did this happen last time too? Maybe I just forgot or maybe it's because I was hanging out with Heisuke and Harada before...
This dinner is terrifying.
Survival of the fittest? More like survival of the FATTEST! Amirite? Anyone? No? I'll stop.
Takeda admittedly has a point about you not earning your place in the Shinsengumi. And he has great hair. So I can almost forgive him for being a mega bitch.
"His swordsmanship is decent, BUT he is well read and possesses a cunning mind for military science." Not sure if a translation error or Hijikata just hates nerds?!
Does accompanying Hijikata as his page get me bonus Kazama Sexy Points purely because it pisses Hijikata off?
Chizuru once again being in mortal peril but getting distracted by Iba's beautiful face is relatable af.
"Takeda huffed smugly to himself and WADDLED out of the store." What a majestic image we have been blessed with :') The bitchiest penguin ever to waddle this Earth!
Iba happily munching his bean jelly is a MOOD.
Chapter 2
Okita telling you that you're here to keep him company on his rounds is exactly the kind of bullshit that I'd expect from him X_X
Guess I'm just running into a battle...
Oh, it's Kazama. Sitting on the windowsill like the edgy bastard he is.
Aaaand he just killed a guy on his own side. Classic edgelord move.
And apparently I have to thank him for this display if I want him to be my waifu.
Seemingly, Chizuru is thirsty for this slut and is being REALLY FRICKING OBVIOUS ABOUT IT X_X
OH HE DID NOT JUST CALL ME THE SHINSENGUMI'S BITCH. Although, it is somewhat accurate XD STILL A DICK MOVE AFTER I THANKED HIM SO NICELY, THOUGH.
AND HE SAYS THAT I HAVE MANNERS, BUT WHERE ARE YOUR FREAKING MANNERS, YOU EDGY THOT?!!!
I have a feeling that a lot of this will be typed in caps from now on -_-
Oooh he winked! I cannot handle this intense eroticism!
Surprise Saito! My favourite flavour of surprise (see, "Shinsengumi's bitch")!
The Shinsengumi are grateful for my efforts and, thus, have gifted me with the great gift of sweeping <3
Hijikata and Iba are so cute <3
Kazama's being edgy again X_X and murdering people. Classic Kazama.
Oh wow, he's actually calling us peasants.
Aw, we're talented peasants <3 How generous of him!
HOW DARE HE TRASH TALK OKITA LIKE THAT! Wow, I'm actually defending that asshole X_X
Hijikata baring his teeth like an angry doggo XD
I'm super mad at Kazama for killing that poor Shinsengumi guy :'( Such a thoughtless waste of life :'(
Now he's mocking Nagakura's obedience to the Shogun. What are your lofty ideals, Kazama? Ah yes, you want to subjugate and enslave the human race. How... noble...
Okay, so, apparently, Kazama is being a huge, murderous pain in the ass because he's just OH SO CONCERNED for the pride of his human allies. I don't buy it.
Ah, Hijikata called Kazama a petulant child :') Truer words were never spoken!
Okay, now Hijikata is saying that they don't deserve an honourable death?! Wow, Hijikata. That comment is not going to age well, I can tell you.
So maybe I agree with Kazama here!? He still shouldn't have murdered that guy, though.
I seriously don't understand why Hijikata is so keen to slaughter these guys and potentially lose more of his men just to force them to suffer a shameful death?! Maybe he doesn't see dying that way as dishonourable but I have no patience for people forcing their ideals onto others.
Aaah! Kazama throwing Hijikata's insult back in his face is pretty brilliant!
Kazama just sliced me in the face! Sexy?!
Sexy Points with Kazama because he's confirmed your full BROOD MARE potential.
Kazama likes calling people bitches so we have that in common.
So, now Hijikata respects them for committing seppuku?! I am CONFUSED.
Oh, now I'm getting Itou's origin story?! This is unexpected!
Wait, have I broken the game and accidentally romanced Kondou?! What is happening right now?! X_X
Oooh! I'm getting sword training! Yes please! This is better than sex :D
Feminist icon Kondou isn't going easy on me just because I'm a girl :D
Chapter 3
Aka: Sanan's breakdown!
"Those were his last words." O_O I... hope that that's not true...
Okay, now he's throttling me! I take it back! Somebody fillet this crazy fucker!
OMG WAS THAT CRUNCHING SOUND MY NECK?!
But why is he choking me when he could be sipping on my delicious blood? O_o
The awkward moment when your creepy brother is a hotter woman than you X_X
Apparently, Kazama's gazing at me with bloodlust. How romantic.
Haha! Apparently Kazama's hand is "pale and grasping like the tentacle of some hideous subterranean monster." X_X Hot.
Yay! Rescued from tentai boi by HajiBAE and SanoCUTEY! And Harada is calling out Kazama for being a creep :') This is a good day.
Kazama's response burn is weak. The culture and the nose of a dog? What does that even mean? Even if Harada's nose looked like a dog's, that'd still be pretty weak, imo.
Ha! Saito's response is basically just an Uno reverse card but I'm always here for calling Kazama out on his hypocrisy.
Omg, now Yamazaki is kidnapping me and Shiranui's calling him out! None of these hos have any chill!
Amagiri is taking a break from fighting to read Shiranui for being a hotheaded pain in the arse.
Hijikata is rightfully calling me an idiot for drawing my sword on Kazama :')
Kazama's insults are so blunt and childish but it's so funny! He just called Hijikata a weak shit! Apparently, fighting him is an honour and Hijikata isn't giving this diva the attention he believes he deserves.
Hijikata needs to stop calling me Kid X_X
"Sleazebag" = accurate.
Ooh, Sanan is paying me a late night visit! How risqué!
Of course I want to learn more about the water of life but The Grand High Nonce would apparently disapprove so I guess I'll have to wait until another route to find out :'(
Apparently Kazama's not going to abduct me TODAY. How reassuring.
I relate to Kazama admiring the beauty of the temple but he lost me by being a hypocrite again. Apparently, he doesn't understand how humans can destroy their creations with their wars. KAZAMA IS FIGHTING WITH THE PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO BURN KYOTO AND THEY PARTIALLY SUCCEEDED. Kazama can only destroy things, as far as I can tell.
Now he's ranting about how they lie, deceive and kill. Pot kettle black? "If they want something, they'll steal it." UGH, KAZAMA, YOU HAVE REPEATEDLY TRIED TO STEAL ME YOU HYPOCRITICAL FUCKWIT. HE'S SO FRUSTRATING. SUCH AN INSUFFERABLE COMBINATION OF PRETENTION, HYPOCRISY, CRUELTY, HUBRIS, I could go on XD I should stop... For now...
AAAAAH HE JUST SAID NOT TO TRUST THE SHINSENGUMI BECAUSE THEY KILL THEIR OWN MEN WITHOUT BATTING AN EYELASH. THAT'S WHAT KAZAMA DOES WHEN YOU FIRST MEET HIM! BUT I GUESS IT DOESN'T COUNT TO HIM BECAUSE THE MAN WASN'T PART OF HIS SUPERIOR RACE!
Sen = <3
Chapter 4 (This is where I went to sleep)
I feel like we could have got away with killing the guy who was SENTENCED TO DEATH if fricking Sanan hadn't shown up and revealed his alive-ness!
Aw, Itou is concerned about my arm!
Aaaaand he's ruined it by being a cunt XD "Would you like to know?" "Yes." "I won't tell you." X_X
Heisuke, Saito... HOW COULD YOU LEAVE ME... WHEN I NEEDED TO... POSSES YOU... I HATED YOU; I LOVED YOU TOO... BAD DREAMS IN THE NIGHT.... *Continues singing Wuthering Heights and dances around the room dramatically*
"And then they were gone" :'(
Tbf, I'd be pretty mad if my comrades had been doing such dangerous, fucked up experiments behind my back.
"I am more concerned about the soldiers being left behind." - lies!
Wait, Sanan knew Itou "really well"?! Their only interaction until now was Itou being a mega-douche to him. I have so many questions!
Aw, Sanan trusts that our friendlings will return <3
Ooh! Going on a manju adventure with YAM!
Kazama strolling down the street and everybody being pushed out of the way by the douchebag waves rolling off of him.
Okay, so Kazama has come here alone to get pissed amongst humans?! That seems implausible...
"I might even allow you to pour me a drink." BLEUGH BLETCH BLUUURGH.
I CANNOT WITH THIS THOT AND HIS HYPOCRITICAL BULLSHIT. HOW DARE HE BRAG ABOUT HOW COOL AND DOWN WITH THE KIDS HE IS TO BE DRINKING WITH HUMANS AND THEN SLAG ME OFF FOR ASSOCIATING WITH HUMANS?!
If I'm supposedly so curious about the demon lifestyle, can I PLEASE just run away with Sen? :'(
WHY IS NOBODY ASKING WHAT I WANT?!? X_X I WANT TO GO WITH THE COOL DEMON LADIES!!!
"Yukimura. What do you have to say about this?" FINALLY!!! THANK YOU, KONDOU!
I really want to go but the game won't let me XD
Souji is correct. I clearly have rocks for brains XD
"Gosh" Appropriate reaction.
AAAAAAAAND MY BELOVED SHINSENGUMI IS IMMEDIATELY ENDANGERED BY MY POOR DECISIONS.
Ooh! Physical contact with Kazama! Sure, he's violently grabbing me but this thirsty bitch will take what she can get XD
Harada has the best put downs :') "Barging in here to get yourself a wife! You think you'd get the point by now after all these rejections..."
"You fools have no idea of her worth." BITCH I AM A well, not human but SENTIENT BEING! THEY TREAT ME WITH MORE RESPECT THAN YOU EVER DID YOU MASSIVE CREEP. I AM MORE THAN JUST A WOMB, YOU HO!!!
"She is most valuable when used by a fitting partner." THA FUCK DID YOU JUST SAY?!???! NOPENOPENOPE. A FITTING PARTNER WOULD NOT "USE" ME, BITCH.
"HA! So you decide to take her against her will just because you're too scared of the rejection you'll get from flat-out asking her out, huh?" YES HARADA!!! YOU CALL OUT THIS FUCKING NONCE!!! ALL RAPISTS ARE COWARDS!!! "You're so lame and creepy." WHERE IS THE LIE?!??
Meanwhile, Hijikata just makes it clear that he'd happily slice through me. Good to know.
I shall WIGGLE my way out of this situation! What do you mean it didn't work?!
YAAAS KONDOU! YOU FIGHT THAT BITCH!!!
OMG I JUST FELL ON TOP OF OKITA AND NOW HE'S SLUT SHAMING ME! XD
"Tell me... How is it? On top of me. Does it feel good?" O_O O_O O_O This game just got a lot more spicy!
Just fuck already! If only to piss off Kazama X_X
Aw, poor sick Okita <3
How dare they mention that the new HQ has a huge bath for warriors to bathe together and not have another thirst scene :P
Now Harada and Nagakura are slut shaming each other for having their tiddies out in Winter :')
Does this count as sexposition? Politics + tiddies?
"Itou dies." This is what happens when you base a game around true events! Problems aren't solved with the power of love and friendship! X_X
YES SAITO, PLEASE PROTECT ME FROM THIS MURDEROUS NONCE!
Chapter 5
At least in the normal route where nobody loves me, I don't get shot at by cannons O_O
There are a lot of typos in this chapter already. Perhaps the developers didn't expect anyone to be INSANE enough to romance Kazama.
DON'T TELL THIS RANDOM GUY YOUR PLANS YOU FOOL!!! IF THIS GETS INOUE KILLED, IMMA BE SO MAD!!!
NO INOUE!!! DON'T DRINK THE CRAZY JUICE!!!
NOOOOOO!!!! INOOOUUUUEEEE!!! :'(
Yes Queen, you call out those murdering cowards :'(
FFS I just got hella shot X_X
NO YOU GUYS ARE THE MONSTERS!!!
Apparently, I'm a "Noble Demon specimen" BITCH WHERE?!
"Why was Kazama helping me?" UM, HAVEN'T WE BEEN THROUGH THIS?! BECAUSE HE WANTS TO "USE" YOUR FERTILE WOMB TO BREED A NEW LINE OF DEMON CHILDREN.
"Shoot me? To death?" XD
"Kazama glared coldly at the pile of dismembered corpses on the floor" :') So romantic!
OMG IT'S THE BETTER DRESSED VERSION OF ME!!!
"Actually a man." UM, A CHILD, SEEMINGLY.
The whole creepy demonic family together at last :')
STOP CALLING ME ADORABLE AND LITTLE YOU CREEPY DEMON CHILD.
"What you're doing is disgraceful." YOU TELL HIM KAZAMA.
"Mind if I kill your family, right here and now?" O_O Kazama has zero chill! Thanks for asking, though, I guess. Go for it, Kazama XD
Oh, apparently I'm going to "talk to them" X_X
"Kodo, I could murder you over a thousand times, and it still wouldn't be enough for me." This is the most I've ever liked Kazama.
Doesn't Kazama work directly with Kodo in various routes?
Why can't I vanish like smoke? :'( Where are MY cool demon powers? :'(
"Turns out the only one capable of keeping you safe when you needed them most was me -- not them." HOW DARE YOU!!! INOUE GAVE HIS LIFE PROTECTING ME AND YOU'VE NEVER PUT YOUR OWN PRECIOUS NECK OUT THERE FOR ANYONE IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE YOU POMPOUS ASS!!! YOU'VE NEVER HAD TO WORK FOR ANYTHING IN YOUR WHOLE LIFE, HAVE YOU?! YOU WERE BORN A DEMON PRINCE AND THAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT YOU'RE BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE?!? BECAUSE YOU HAVE POWERS YOU DIDN'T EARN?!
"If your idea of a good time is seeing the rotting corpses of your friends, be my guest..." 8_8 :'( No, they can't all be dead! Surely not! Kazama don't say things like that!
The Yodo are going to betray the Shogunate?!? I must warn them D:
Wow, this just got heavy and real sad.
Wait, did he just admit to meddling in the war?! He is such a hypocrite!!!! Aaaaaaah!!! Somebody call him out on his bs!!!!
SEN AND KIMIGIKU <3 SAVE ME!
Even Shiranui sees that humans have a variety of complex motivations X_X
I AM NOT YOUR FUTURE WIFE!!!!
Do the Shinsengumi just assume that I'm dead?!
Great, now I'm on a road trip with this cunt.
"I've never actually been this close to a man before..." Calm down! That horse is third wheeling so hard right now. And what about that time you fell ON TOP OF Okita?!
Welp, that's it for Kyoto Winds! Onwards to Edo Blossoms! I still don't like Kazama but at least murdering the ever-loving FUCK out of Kodo is a cause that I can believe in. Although, one of the reasons that I hated Kodo in Saito's route was because he was helping the same sex pest I'm now galloping across the country with. Huh.
This is the most that I’ve ever used the word, “nonce” in my entire life and this is only the first game.

Pairing: Established Kondo/Hijikata Rating: M Summary: A meditation on where they’ve been and where they’re going--on Hijikata’s promise to make Kondo the most esteemed samurai and one that Kondo makes in return. Hakuouki verse, Kat-chan POV, written to this. [AO3]
tl;dr: They love each other a lot and Reimeiroku is a gift

The Listener
Beneath a blanket of celestial glitter he stood with his arm ghosting beside mine, while fireflies sparkled gold in the distance and a gentle breeze feathered whispers against our skin. We stared out at the endless rhinestone sky, listening as if the stars could speak and we could decipher their words.
I heard them.
I know it sounds irrational, like a consequence of being caught up in the emotions of a significant occasion, but I swear there was a promise somewhere in those points of light. And when it reached me, my breath hitched. Inspiration swelled like a wayward seed taking root in my chest, and the feelings which bloomed from it swept over in waves: first awe, then determination, then resolve.
On that serene night filled with cricket song, I’d become convinced our names would one day be written in stellar ink on that astral tapestry...that the stories of our past, our present, our future--the stories of us--were destined to be immortalized there.
Someday, someone would know our names. They would recount all we’d done and all we’d achieved, and those tales would inflame the heartbeat of generations treading the footprints we left behind.
Staring off unblinking beyond the horizon, I’d never been more convinced than then that it mattered, everything we managed to accomplish so far. Our dreams were admittedly absurd, our desires just as unattainable; even we laughed at them, yet...here, two men from Tama, stood together in samurai dressage on Kyoto soil, bathed in starlight and moonbeams and purpose.
It mattered. We mattered. A difference had already been made and this was only just the beginning.
That’s when Toshi spoke.
“Everything’s changed so much.” It was the tone he reserved for me--soft, like the silver glow spilling over us from the sky. “And it’ll keep changing.”
Foreigners arriving on boats of unthinkable scale, political unrest shaking up peace that lasted centuries, the pardoning of convicts to inflate the ranks, and farmers--farmers!--serving the Bakufu...indeed, this was a different age with different rules.
Still, there were some constants that would never yield, no matter how much the times did. I closed my eyes for a moment and my mouth eased into a smile.
A pointer finger raised to trace along Toshi’s pinky and then my hand slipped over to take his. Our digits entwined and I held on tightly without looking at him. “Some things never will.”
He exhaled shortly and in the peripheral, I saw him nod. “I know.”
“Do you?”
“Yeah.” A beat followed the breathy reply and his tone reclaimed its vitality. “Right now, what we need to think about most is making a name for ourselves here.”
I hummed in agreement.
“And once we do that...” His grasp suddenly tightened to surpass mine.
At last, I faced him. His chin remained elevated, his eyes rife with fervor and still pointed toward the stars. “I swear I’ll make you this country’s most exalted samurai.” Toshi’s dark lashes fell in a prolonged blink and when they parted again, he gazed toward the garden and his voice diminished back to a whisper. “That’s why I’m here.”
Silence followed, but the strength with which our hands stayed clasped never lessened.
And my mind, it was running rampant, wondering how any verbal response could possibly follow that caliber of selflessness, of boundless dedication...how the intensity of his grip could say so much without saying anything at all.
I could hear what he left unspoken, just as I heard the stars.
But when it came my turn to speak, I once more was left humbled by how little I was able. I’d never found the words to accurately express what I harbored for him, despite all the years we’d spent at each other’s sides chasing the same wild dream. We were closer than ever now to achieving it and still, he deemed it necessary to assert that he put me before anything else.
I knew. I knew how he felt, and I wanted to believe he knew my regard mirrored his in equal.
I wanted to return that sentiment, that reassurance tenfold. I wanted to convey how deep my affection ran, that my adoration for him was just as unfathomable, that it was love, yes, but so much more. I wanted him to know that it wasn’t about my victory, but both of ours--because no matter how far I might sail on the vast ocean of destiny, it was his fate to be right at my side.
Language was too empty for that though, and my voice nowhere near passionate enough. So, I resorted to what I always did when I was unsure. I said his name.
“Toshi.”
The moment he turned to me, I became aware of how openly I wore my heart; taken aback, his eyes widened when they met mine and I watched as they instantly softened from there. He hadn’t expected what he saw, the blotches of faint pink staining their way across his face confirming that and how he attempted to avert his attention, just to have it return to me.
I nodded once, reached up to brush his bangs aside, and everything slowed to a pause.
The vastly changing world, the state of our own country, the Serizawa-Niimi migraines, the dilemma of proving our worth here and creating that ever-enduring name...all of it faded away when my lips touched Toshi’s.
It was chaste and controlled, the kiss; I tilted my head and his spine stiffened. But it was also rife with meaning I couldn’t articulate otherwise, and long enough only for me to make a single wish.
Please understand what I’m saying.
Then, I pulled back.
We were outside, after all. Middle of the night or not, there were eleven others here beside us and that was without counting Yagi-san and his family.
“Sorry.” I spoke first, not allowing him the opportunity to chastise me for kissing him publicly, even if I deserved it. My gaze was trained on the dark porch planks contrasting with our bare feet and another smile began inching its way upward when I imagined he would scold me anyway.
As I sought out his face again though, the irritation I anticipated was absent and in its place, something else: his eyes were determined, filled with a longing desire I’d come to know all too well--and more yet. Toshi’s other hand raised, his fingertips clearly intent to seek purchase on my cheek and he leaned back toward me.
A stiff tug denied him and I pivoted, starting for the open shoji. “Inside.”
He remained cemented in place, however, speechless while our arms extended from a distance that I found utterly unacceptable at this point. “You’re...unfair.”
“Sometimes,” I breathed, and pulled again to coax him into following.
“Kat-chan, the tray--”
--could wait. I never left my belongings about, but right now, the necessity of putting my hands on him and having his on me was greater than worrying about leaving dishware on the porch for a short while. Hours separated sunrise from this moment and the teapot would surely forgive me.
“Later.”
For once, Toshi relented and it wasn’t long after when his hair fell around me and all I could smell and touch and taste and know was him.
~
Raised as a farmer’s son, it was in my nature to wake early--but the crash and shout were what had me jolting into awareness before dawn that day.
“Kya!”
Heisuke. Unmistakably.
My eyes went as wide as Toshi’s, both of us lying on our sides with the sleep not so gently rattled out of our heads. We stared at each other in half-dazed quietude while the tirade of grumbling began outside the closed shoji.
“Who the hell’s leavin’ their dishes around so I can trip! Aghh, it’s too early for this, ughh--” A long yawn followed and from the subsequent sounds, it seemed Heisuke had begun to collect the items and rearrange them back on the tray.
He was in apparent need of some more self-sympathy as he did so however, since he went right back to talking to himself. In any case, it provided some insight to why he was so irascible, aside from it being too early an hour.
“Drink up, Heisuke. Let’s have fun, Heisuke. It’s only one jug, Heisuke. Yeahhh, cause you dumbasses didn’t have kitchen duty today and I forgot.”
Taking his leave, his voice became progressively distant the further his heavy footsteps carried him off. “Stupid Sano, stupid Shinpat-san, frickin’ good-for-nothings. Just wait until it’s their turn...”
At last, the complaints tapered back into silence and though I genuinely felt bad for the inconvenience, I could no longer suppress the amusement I’d kept at bay.
With a dramatic groan, Toshi threw an arm over his head and immediately slid it back down to the small space between us. His lashes fell and his brows pulled inward. “I told you.”
“You did,” I agreed, willfully accepting the admonishment. “Sorry.” Exhaling through my nose, I brushed the stray locks he’d disturbed out of his face and tucked them behind his exposed ear. “I got a bit preoccupied last night, though.”
This earned me a tiny smile and Toshi’s eyes opened again. He reached to clasp my hand, then drew it firmly against his chest. After a few moments, he pressed my palm even tighter to him and his mouth relaxed. “Ne, Kondo-sensei...”
Whenever the formal title came out, I knew he was about to start talking business. “Mm...”
“When you’re a daimyo and surrounded by servants and admirers, no one will complain about you leaving your dishes out.”
I pulled away just enough to turn the underside of my hand toward his so we could entangle our fingers as we did last night--and that was when they hit, the right combination of words which had for so long evaded me.
“Toshi-san...” I continued the playful etiquette and paused, falling serious and shifting my attention briefly to the latticing of our digits. “If I become a daimyo--”
“When,” he interjected with a half growl.
“When I become a daimyo,” I corrected myself, apparently much to his liking, “I intend to take care of my own dishes.” To that, he raised a brow. “But more importantly...” My thumb stroked against his. “I’ll still be waking up next to you.”
It was simple and plain, and completely lacking in the embellishments expected upon informing someone that they were the one. However, it was also a promise, and one I meant with everything I was.
Toshi stayed quiet and as the next seconds slipped away, we simply looked into each other’s eyes while I wondered if I’d been wrong to feel such confidence after all. Then, the makings of a smile suddenly hinted on his lips and he slowly leaned across the futon.
I didn’t stop him that time, didn’t pause to brush his long hair out of the way when the kiss deepened, didn’t say a damn thing when he shoved me on my back and straddled my hips.
But my body talked, and an excess of vows cascaded to unnecessarily reassure him the way his grasp had done the same for me last night.
I know you know. But I promise, I promise, I promise, I swear.
And when dawn broke into the first sparkle of sunlight at the horizon, I was sure that Toshi finally heard what I’d been trying to say all along.
I had no idea what forever was--but he and I were it.

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ Chapter 1: The Reunion Chapter 2: RSVP Chapter 3: Recharge Chapter 4: Welcome Back Chapter 5: Decision Of A Lifetime
Chapter 6: Our Story
The nighttime view is so beautiful from here, only if you are in the mood to admire it. Kaga is right, running away is what you do. Gripping the railing as your face and knuckles turn pale, you angrily wipe the tears off your face with the back of your palm. You see it coming and you bloody deserve it, you have left him in the cold all these years without contacting or explaining anything to him. He has every right to be mad and vents in front of everyone.
Tumblr media
“Mika?” A tender voice asks from behind as his hand lands on your shoulder but you couldn’t find the guts to turn around. You stand still, taking a deep breath before you answer him.
“I’m fine, Goto.”
His hand moves to your cheek to wipe away your tears, your eyes fix on the city lights as he finally turns you to face him. “You don’t have to pretend in front of me, you know that.”
You bite your lip, forcing yourself not to cry furthermore but he pulls you close with your head resting on his chest. You shut your eyes tightly, like it would prevent the tears from coming. “Thank… you.” You sound so weak and you hate it, especially when all the bidders are one door away.
“You can talk to me, you know?” Goto brushes your hair softly, this is your first time to be in his arms and you’ve never realized how well built he is.
You break away and laugh it off. “Sorry you have to see this side of me, I’ve ruined my make up, haven’t I?”
“Stop!” Goto holds onto your wrist, “Talk to me.”
You look down at your hands and he reluctantly lets go before you sit down slowly on a bench close by. “Would I sound crazy if two people very similar that seem to be perfect… are just …not meant for each other?”
With a wry smile quirking his lips, he lays a hand atop of your head. “I don’t think that’s crazy, it makes total sense.”
Seeing his smiles is enough encouragement for you to begin your side of the story.
Kaga’s POV: Four years ago
Tumblr media
Don’t be nervous, I keep telling myself as she walks towards me. When am I supposed to take the ring out? Following her gaze to the Ferris Wheel then back to her beautiful face, so confident, brave and perfect.
“Why are we here, Kaga?”
I click my tongue and pull her close to kiss her, “Why the heck are you calling me Kaga?” She grins and looks around to see we are the only one by the pier. I slowly get on one knee. Me, on my knee for a woman. Pff, I’d have laughed at whoever think this’d ever be possible but I’m so fucking glad she’s found me, completing me and spending the rest of our lives together is all I’d ever wanted.
“You’re the one who wanna come here remember?” She turns back to find me down on one knee with eyes wide open, I can’t help the curl on my lips at her gasp and oh my god. “Mika Hijikata, will you marry me?”
Tumblr media
“Yes!! Yes!!! You idiot!!” She yanks me up as soon as the ring fits perfectly onto her finger, wrapping her arms around my neck and seals my lips for the longest kiss before she finally pulls away.
“See how much I’ve spoiled you, woman? Bringing you here, letting you call me an idiot.” She’s too consumed to notice my nervousness while I hide the rest of my thoughts to myself. I’ve become an idiot but her idiot and it’s all worth it.
Back To Mia’s World
“Of course I’ll marry him, why wouldn’t I?” Your eyes meet with Goto who’s been patiently listening to your story. “We’ve been together forever, not that I have thought about marriage but who else would I want to spend the rest of my lives with apart from Kaga…… Or at least, that’s what I thought.”
Tumblr media
You sigh and look the other side where the bidders are secretly peeking through the windows but Kaga is nowhere to be found.
“A week later we had dinner with his sister who announced her pregnancy then it suddenly struck me. Family, do I see myself starting a family with Kaga? Do I see myself as a mother? A housewife?”
Goto’s eyes never leave yours as you continue, “He’d want me to quit and become a housewife but I love my job as much as he does. I don’t want to be the person who sits at home and wonders if he’s gonna make it alive today. I don’t want to turn into the kind of woman who nags and whines that the husband is never home while I know damn well he’s out there saving the country.”
You look at Goto again, his eyes are still fixed on you even when tears start stinging the corners of your eyes.
“I panic.”
You bite your lips, the word panic rarely comes out of your mouth. Not even Mia or Jin know, you phrase it differently. “It’s stupid I know but I panic and I … I just ran. Cuz I already said yes, he’s not going to change his view, that much’s obvious. I… I just called Mia and Jin, left a note and ran as far as I could.”
Tumblr media
Goto pulls you to his chest for the second time, probably not the best move since everyone else is watching on the other side and you don’t want anyone to get the wrong idea. Being comfort in a man’s arms is dangerous, you know that far too well and distraction is the last thing you need when such important mission is up ahead. Goto has always been a great friend but not close enough for you to tell him about your disappearance at the time, it’s for his own good. Kaga would do anything to find you which is why you leave no details to Mia either.
Pulling back slowly with relief, you thank Goto for listening to your pathetic tale. “It’s not your fault that you panic, we are just human.” Well but it’s coward of you to run off than to talk to Kaga about it. “What’s done is done.” Goto puts a hand on your shoulder, “We can’t change the past. I’m here if you need me, whether to listen, to vent or if you need a shoulder to lean on, I am here. Mika, I’m always here for you.”
You smile, another dangerous move. Does Goto have any idea what he’s saying? Telling a woman he’s always by her side, always available when she needs him. Or do men just say the same things to all women when they comfort them?
Even Ota learns to keep his mouth shut once you return inside and you find Kaga at the corridor outside the penthouse. He stares, behind his cold eyes and bitterness, you see- he’s deeply hurt. The man is about to walk pass until you mutter a sorry. He pins your wrists to the wall with one hand easily, “I’m.. really sorry.” You apologize again to only hear his other fist hits the wall right against your ear.
“I don’t need your sorry.” He says through clenched teeth.
“I’ll explain.”
Tightening his grip, he leans closer and suffocates you with his tobacco scent. He’s furious, probably not just at you but also himself for wanting to kiss you. Both suppressing the urge to seal each other’s lips and take it further, you two have always made love during or after a fight. It’s fucking sexy, he often says with his signature smirk but not now. Not after he’s yelled to your face, not when you are only centimeters away, not when your hot breath is testing his limits.
The door opens and you both turn to see Soryu’s eyes darken at the sight, you begin to struggle. “Let go.” You state, it isn’t a question or request.
Kaga takes one last look at the mobster before switching his gazes back on you with a firm no. “You were in the middle of apologizing,” he smirks, “finish what you’re saying.” He grips harder and you let out a light whimper.
You steal a glance at Soryu and hate yourself for doing this to him too. “I love you, Hyogo.” The three simple words have such magical effect on both men and women, the impact is no less powerful whether to a mobster or to a cop.
Chapter 7 here
