oc rambling #1
I’m finally gonna start doing my rambles here on tumblr so I can stop annoying my friends on instagram hhnghgrh
im so sorry i switch between proper punctuation/capitalization to using none at all unless im writing seriously so this Is A Mess
I’m going to messily cite where I get each concept from, just so if i forget i can come back to those places for reference and possibly to look into for more study topics
citations are going to be marked by a ~ followed by a link with the contents summarized in parenthesis, also bolded
So, my absolute favorite oc right now is named Kaneko Kyomu, there’s a lot of backstory that I’m not gonna explain rn
hhngjgj i really am about to rebuild him from the ground up and Im. Dying. ive decided not to talk about his mental health At All for probably at least a few good months because I’m deep dive researching the disorder he has, but if in the end I feel I can’t write it well (it’s so terribly represented by the media and even my first attempts at writing him with it have been Completely Fucking Awful And Im Ashamed), i have an alternative idea that /might/ work, but would still reference a lot of the research to help write it. my main reason for possibly choosing not to use it is I don’t want to become part of the stigma against this disorder, and Kyo has a character arc in his mid-teens where he has to kill someone to save his life and his world, knowing the alternative to save his world would result in his own death. I need to weigh the options to decide if he’s going to be seen as a bad person/evil for choosing to save himself, when in the end he’s still saving his world and honestly preventing people like him in the future from dying.
when i originally conceptualized his character, it was after reading some of Call of Cthulhu ~ http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/fiction/cc.aspx (full CoC pdf) for a school project where I needed to create a narrative storyline from a topic I pulled from the story.  I wanted to modernize the idea of not having access to good mental health after reading what Henry Anthony Wilcox ~ https://lovecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Henry_Anthony_Wilcox (character wikia) went through with his psychological break, and what I interpreted as respressing the memories of the break in order to return to ‘normal’ to continue his life. With first hand experience of how hard it is when you are denied access to certain healthcare ~ ive had severe depression since i was 11, only just started getting treated for it + im trans and finally can make the medical transition decisions without parents consent, I thought it would be interesting to try and conceptualize what that would do if, despite showing clear signs of mental disorder and need of mental health care, society actively denied the ability for someone to have problems like that.  I also wanted to combine it with the concept of multiple plains existing on the same universe. ~ https://www.dutchangeldragons.com/lore (Dutch Angel Dragon species lore, the place where years ago I was introduced to the concept of multiple plains/realms existing in the same space) So, when I read Call of Cthulhu, (which I haven’t finished because that project was kicking my ass and I just had to wing it!) I pictured Cthulhu as existing on a seperate plain, but able to influence the minds of people because its still the same space that he exists in. I was also inspired by this idea by a BNHA fanfic (which I also haven’t finished because I was reading it over fall break and it’s intense as hell and had to take a break) ~ https://archiveofourown.org/works/14572500 (link to lovecraftian fanfic, read the TVTropes page before reading if you have sensitivities to certain subjects!) Looking back on this fic just now, I actually need to review some things I was going to include in my own universe because I may have been more heavily inspired than I thought;;
SO, now that I’ve like established some shit, im actually gonna talk about my world. The general universe is just, it just there. sorry, It’s just like any universe, its not major geographical changes, it takes place on earth. But there is another plain, called the Vielle, where creatures of nightmare exist. These creatures, called ‘Vielle-Dwellers’ as a general name, range from the size of mice to the sizes that can’t be accurately described by those who have seen them. This is the place where Gods roam, and you can tell a God from a Vielle-Dweller because Gods are beings that ascended from the Surface (the human/material realm), and almost always resemble a lifeform from the surface.  In this world, people have abilities that are known by the color of their eyes. They aren’t really obvious at first, in fact I still haven’t assigned abilities to most colors. These are the ones I have so far:
White/No Iris: (aka white-eyes) They are moderately common. They are coveted for their inability to access the vielle. they cannot sense any vielle-dwellers, and do not have any special abilities. They are considered to be the most level headed, are usually pushed to pursue fields like science, psychology, and religious leadership because they don’t have any reason to fear or be sensitive to the vielle or any of the beings that inhabit it. Because they lack irises, they are prone to extreme light sensitivity, white-eyes are given special prescriptions for sunglasses that are styles like normal glasses, usually before the age of 2, because LED/sunlight regularly cause migraines and eye sensitivity without them.
Yellow: (aka Travelers) Travelers are born once every 10-30 years, they have absolute access to the vielle, and are able to travel freely between the two realms. they usually first access the vielle at around 3 years old, but its really just when they accidentally activate the ability. they are the only type who can physically interact the vielle dwellers that can be seen on the surface, and are usually taught to fight with knives or other short range weapons early on to defend themselves. they can be born anywhere in the world, and the country that has the honor of hosting one sees them as a gift from their country’s patron god(s) and/or goddess(es).
My main character Kaneko Kyomu is the only current living Traveler. He was born in Tokyo but living in the Yamanashi Prefecture near the Aokigahara forest (this place is the strongest connection to the vielle in japan, so it’s the easiest to exit from. his mom got tired of getting calls from police in the prefecture that her son had popped up there again so she just decided to move there). god this is so long and its not even really a ramble,, its just info about the world that i already know jfgjkdgj
