OPLA fan cast polls - Brook prelims
Tumblr media
There will only be 1 winner, so choose wisely.
Propaganda under the cut.
Javier Botet:
He's an Spanish actor who's played a lot of monsters in Hollywood. He's 2 m tall (6.5 ft) and has a very skinny body. He also has a great sense of humor that goes very well with Brook's personality. There's also this short video to know a bit more about him:
youtube
Botet is a beyond talented actor that has learned to use his condition (Marfan Syndrome) to his advantage, using his long and hyper flexible limbs to gracefully act out his part even while fully decked out in prosthetic makeup. Brook would be a different kind of character than what he’s used to (despite being long limbed and spooky he’s far more jolly than Dracula from the Last Voyage of the Demeter), but Botet seems interested in giving the role a shot based on his interactions with fans on twitter!
Daveed Diggs: He's got musical experience and a good afro.
Keith David: keith david is an absolute legend with experience in stage, tv, film and even voice acting. He can even sing having done dr facilier in princess and the frog and i am willing to die on this hill.

Where Have You Seen Loki Season 2's X-5 Actor Before?
This post contains spoilers for the season premiere of "Loki."
"Loki" is back this week, and along with the return of Norse trickster god Loki (Tom Hiddleston), agent Mobius (Owen Wilson), and the rest of the Time Variance Authority, the show's premiere also sees the introduction of a few new key characters. Among them? Ke Huy Quan's helpful, tech-savvy Ouroboros (or O.B.) and X-5, a mysterious new TVA agent played by Rafael Casal. And it's the latter who is particularly intriguing.
So far, we haven't seen X-5 do much besides question whether jet skis are part of the sacred timeline, but the character already seems to be an agitating force within the organization. He's also quite possibly poised to become a recognizable Marvel villain. After all, a featurette for the second season had a couple bits of footage from behind the scenes that showed him in a TVA jumpsuit, as if he was being held prisoner. So that should be interesting to watch play out. But there's more.
As /Film's Sandy Schaefer pointed out back in July, the trailer for "Loki" includes a poster for a movie called "Zaniac!" which fans have tied to Casal's character via leaks and speculation. Zaniac is a noteworthy character in Marvel Comics, though he bears little resemblance to X-5. The character was an evil entity that possessed the man who would become Jack the Ripper, and later took over slasher actor Brad Wolfe.
Ahead of the show's premiere, Casal has been credited by several outlets as Brad Wolfe, not X-5, so it seems likely that he could play out some form of the Zaniac plot this season. Regardless of Casal's true role in the show, though, he's an excellent multi-hyphenate artist whose past works deserve attention.
If X-5 looks familiar, it's likely you recognize Casal from "Blindspotting," a fantastic 2018 musical comedy-drama that he co-wrote with longtime creative partner Daveed Diggs (yes, of "Hamilton" fame). "Blindspotting" was a labor of love for Casal and Diggs, who also produced the film about two best friends living in Oakland, California whose lives are disrupted by the broken policing system. As serious as that sounds, "Blindspotting" is also laugh-out-loud funny, and Casal is a totally charming standout as hot-headed Miles.
The performer reprised the role for Starz's "Blindspotting" TV show, which ran for two seasons and was recently canceled. A criminally underseen hidden gem of a series, "Blindspotting" takes place after the film and puts the focus on Miles' girlfriend, Ashley Rose (Jasmine Cephas Jones), as she parents the pair's young mixed-race son in a racist world, all while Miles is behind bars. Despite his character's incarceration, Casal still appears in the show frequently and his hilarious, soulful character is a fan favorite. If you're looking for a thoughtful, entertaining, dynamic watch – or just want to see what Casal's made of – you can't do much better than either iteration of "Blindspotting."
The performer has also made a name for himself in other projects, including several collaborations with Diggs. A poet and rapper in addition to his acting creds, Casal appeared on three seasons of "Def Poetry Jam" on HBO, released a mixtape with Diggs in 2010, and contributed to the soundtracks for "Blindspotting," including in the catchy (and foulmouthed, fair warning) song "Easy Come, Easy Go." He reunited with Diggs in the acclaimed 2020 miniseries "The Good Lord Bird," a wild historical fiction series led by a fiery Ethan Hawke. Casal and Diggs even started a public theater project called Bars Medley, which remixed classic literature into musical performances.
Other on-screen works of Casal's include a supporting role in the 2019 Hugh Jackman flick "Bad Education" (he played the love interest of Jackman's closeted character) and a multi-episode turn in the "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" revival. Casal played a ringmaster named Mr. Tophat in the reboot of the classic, kid-friendly horror series. Next up, Casal is appearing in "Wildcat," a biography of Southern Gothic author Flannery O'Connor that's directed and co-written by Hawke. The X-5 actor plays a character in one of O'Connor's short stories in the movie, which premiered at Telluride but hasn't been released to the public yet.
Whether X-5 is a frustrated TVA employee, a secret evil entity, a movie actor, or something else entirely, it's exciting to see an artist as talented and versatile as Casal take the stage in a major Marvel series. You can catch his next moves on Disney+, where new episodes of "Loki" stream Thursdays at 9pm ET.

2023 Movie Journey #10: The Little Mermaid
Tumblr media
the little mermaid. okay, so this one was really interesting! i didn’t go into it with high expectations, but i also wasn’t expecting to hate it--i’ve seen very few of the disney live action remakes, so i didn’t really know what i might think at all. (as a matter of fact, i think the only one of the remakes i’ve seen is beauty and the beast? i have a couple others on my watchlist cuz @actuallylukedanes recommended them, like tarzan and pete’s dragon, but i haven’t seen aladdin or the lion king and i can’t remember if there are more.)
i did go into this one expecting to have fun whether i actually liked it or not, though, because i saw it in the theater with my family and i have a good time doing that with any movie. and i knew i loved some of the cast--awkwafina, daveed diggs, and melissa mccarthy were all selling points for me. i wasn’t familiar with the actress playing ariel but i knew she could sing, so i looked forward to seeing what she did with the role.
before it actually came out, i was originally worried about melissa mccarthy playing ursula, because i adore her and know she’s super talented, but the whole ‘ursula was modeled after a drag queen’ history of the animated character made her casting surprising to me, for some reason. it made me wonder what angle this version would be going for, with ursula. i didn’t get excited about it until they released a snippet of poor unfortunate souls and i was like ‘ohhhhh. okay she’s really going for it.’
after that i think i watched the clip at least twice before even seeing the movie, cuz it made me happy to feel like her interpretation was probably going to be true to my childhood attachment to the original character. honestly, it seems tricky to bring animated characters to life, especially beloved ones, and i’m not sure how a person does it well rather than the much more likely result of screwing it up--but i think a large part of it must be wholeheartedly committing to your ideas and then flinging yourself into it, without concerning yourself with whether or not other people will agree with how you interpreted it.
and that may not actually create widely beloved interpretations, i wouldn’t really know--i feel like emma stone did the same thing in cruella, and for the same reason, i loved her portrayal. it was off-the-wall insane, but she committed to it, and that movie knew what it wanted to be and it won me over against my expectations.
back to the little mermaid! i felt like this movie had several big problems, but most of them were the direct result of having live actors play these characters in this story without changing the basics (and changing the basics would make it a different story). the parts of the little mermaid that are abstractly weird/concerning when it was animated in the ‘90s become actively, unavoidably difficult or more creepy once everything is three-dimensional.
first of all, ariel’s scenes once she couldn’t talk were just...rough. the movie tries to give ariel and eric more of a connection, more bonding time and things to bond over, but she just can’t communicate very much with the wide-eyed lack of emoting that was happening until she got her voice back. i honestly don’t know if it was the actress herself, or the result of how she was directed, or if the real problem is that a cartoon face can just be made more expressive to balance a lack of words. but for me and both of the people i saw this movie with, there was just nothing there on her face, to a weird degree, while her voice is taken.
while i know this wasn’t the case for everybody, though, i did like her singing. i liked the moments in classic ariel songs where she made them her own, little vocal flourishes that reminded me of whitney houston playing the fairy godmother in cinderella. (though i was horrified by her addition to under the sea, which was totally unnecessary and cut into an otherwise great take on another classic by daveed diggs.)
his voice acting, along with awkwafina's, was great as well. her new added rap, i would also file under ‘totally unnecessary,’ but whatever, it’s fine, i know they always add stuff now and with lin involved i would’ve been surprised if it wasn’t a rap. this version of flounder made me miss the animated one a lot, because i remember loving him and i felt like in this one he somehow wasn’t nearly as endearing, or lacked personality or something. i’m still not sure why.
the massive cgi might be part of it, though. i could tell it would be a problem for me as soon as there was a trailer--and i was not wrong. there’s just so much of it. i get that it’s not exactly convenient to, say, make your cast work underwater in tanks or anything...but real fish exist! the ocean exists! i don’t care if it was cheaper to just build the ocean out of pixels; jurassic park is cool because it made an effort with physical effects, and this movie could have looked so much better if they’d tried. even just for the Hey Look Fish scenes.
the other element of this movie that feels a lot worse in a live-action version is the basic love story between ariel and eric. it wasn’t exactly ideal when they were hand-drawn, but we didn’t have to think about it as much. the love at first sight concept is always pretty thin, and it’s no different here--she likes the look of him on his ship, possibly appreciates his willingness to risk his life to save his dog, and is ready to make a deal with ursula on the strength of that. it’s a little more believable for me on eric’s side because even without a voice she has a personality he seems charmed by, during their time together once he’s conscious. but the age gap between them is still gross.
i had to look it up to learn that officially, they made her eighteen for this version instead of sixteen (and the actress was 21 while filming it). but the movie is vague about eric’s age and makes it possible that he could be as young as 21--only the actor playing him was 26 at the time, and to me he looked it. so despite their efforts to tweak the ages to make them closer together and to age her up, i watched this believing that she was an inexperienced teen and he was a fully adult sailor and that was supposed to be totally fine. romantic, even.
even if i wanted to be in favor of them, the actors really didn’t have any chemistry i could see. i don’t remember feeling the same way watching the animated one, but during this version when her friends are trying to manipulate them...it just seemed fully comedic. like, how ridiculous, and not because it’s a bird and a fish and a crustacean wanting them to kiss--the idea of them kissing at all. if it wasn’t required to save ariel’s soul, it wouldn’t have been clear to me why we should want that.
however, i did also like eric! it felt like in the beginning, they put more time and effort into trying to establish him as a character than i remember from the original. making him figuratively more than two-dimensional, not just literally. and it mostly worked.
his most memorable part for me was not necessarily for good reasons, though? i don’t think i’ll ever forget it, but it definitely undermined whatever success they had in making him a love interest hero worth taking seriously.
they...gave him a song. and not just any song. this was a song that reminded me so painfully, so specifically, so unavoidably of another song, that i couldn’t unthink it and he immediately seemed ridiculous when he hadn’t before.
anybody who has seen frozen 2 might remember a little number called ‘lost in the woods.’ it was one of my favorite parts of that movie, because it was very clearly done in the style of ‘80s hair bands, with kristoff overdramatic in his movements and full of emotion and played seriously while not taking itself completely seriously. it struck the perfect tone in what it was aiming for.
but what they do with eric is literally the same sort of thing: overdramatic movements, loudly emoting, Very Serious Despite Looking Silly. the problem is that he’s not an animated character! and he’s not troy bolton from high school musical, either (troy could emote at 1000% like nobody else and get away with it). eric can not get away with it, or at least he doesn’t, and i suspect it’s because the movie gives no indication that there’s a joke we’re supposed to be on.
as far as i could tell, that scene was just eric’s big power ballad, and they wanted him to have a big power ballad, and whether they modeled it after frozen 2 or not, they clearly thought it was a good thing. i’m not so sure they were right about that.
i gotta say, the scary parts of this movie were much scarier than i ever found the animated version to be, though they didn’t change the actual story a lot in those scenes so i’m not sure if i was just less affected as a child (which seems unlikely when the dogcatcher from lady and the tramp gave me nightmares). both her father destroying her collection and the final battle with ursula felt more intense than i remembered, and maybe that comes from having the characters played by real people. a Scary Dad is much scarier when he looks like an actual person, merman or not, and the same is true i guess for a sea witch.
the final battle with ursula was also the worst scene for me when it came to cgi, though. i spent a lot of it not being able to tell what was going on, because eventually that’s what happens--my brain just sees pixels and can’t turn them into whatever they’re supposed to be, and i’m confused until it stops.
but ursula was definitely my favorite part of the movie, in terms of this familiar story going from its animated roots to live action. melissa mccarthy, who is truly so much more talented than her choices in projects always show, took on this role which was iconic when i was a kid. and she somehow approaches it both very sincerely and straightforwardly, giving us the drama and the danger and the snark of the original, while also adding just enough camp. i was genuinely surprised disney let her get away with being so good at it!
at one point, she pauses during a song just to push up her breasts--and i had a flashback to queen latifah in chicago, throwing her all behind ‘when you’re good to mama,’ and teenage me could not have been more delighted. i know there was no deliberate connection there, but for me, that’s such a random moment of flair and sass in the middle of ursula’s singing and it didn’t have to be there. since they didn’t cast an actual drag queen to play her, i really enjoyed that moment that felt, on its own, even the tiniest bit subversive. melissa mccarthy was alive and loving it, playing this character, and we were blessed.
overall, i wouldn’t say this movie was my favorite new disney movie, or even my favorite live action remake (i don’t think i have one). but it had good elements, and i had a good time watching it--it’s just also fun to critique.

Anyway I think I have my fancast for the rest of the endless
Destiny: DB Woodside
In a perfect world it would be Idris Elba but im gonna be realistic. DB has the gravitas and the voice for this role. I think that type of deep voice that could cut stone is perfect for the italics speaking oldest Endless.
Destruction: Daveed Diggs or Tom Hopper
To me, Destruction has to be the most trustworthy looking person I can think of, a little humorous, and have favorite brother energy. These actors have all of those things. I could see either of them begging Dream to eat thier home cooked meal and cracking wise with a talking dog, enjoying retirement. Most importantly, I see them as someone you wish were still a part of a family.
Delirium: Maisie Williams
There is no way that this isn't happening. She has the look. I think she's the right age. She's malleable. She doesn't even have eyebrows often. She's very little sister energy but she's been through enough to give a performance that says, "I'm one of the oldest beings in any universe". I also think she would agree to so a project like this. I imagine her if they get to adapt Brief Lives and I think she's a perfect fit.
Honorable Mentions (people I think belong in the Sandman)
Robert Sheehan: look at him and tell me he doesn't belong in this universe, you cant.. I don't know as who but he belongs
Aiden Gallagher: if he was just a bit older he could do Orpheus. If the show had to wait 15 years, he would've been Dream.
Nicholas Hoult: he would be a good Orpheus but I'm not entirely sure what he looks like now he may be a bit too old
Natalia Dyer: a good pick for Thessaly I think. She might be a touch young but her face would be interesting in that part. She also has the capacity to be intense and badass.
Gemma Chan: she's alianora. She's regal and gorgeous. She was created by desire. She would do so well to be Dreams love and look so good. I don't think she would do the role but if she did she would be perfect.

Here are my thoughts on the live action Little Mermaid!
That literally no-one asked for but I feel like rambling
I have a lot of love for the original film (it's my second favourite Disney film after The Lion King) and a lot of nostalgia for it. I remember getting stuck on the Little Mermaid ride at Disney and me and my mum were just dancing and singing along to Under the Sea the whole time. So when this one came out, we had to go and see it, even if it was just for a laugh.
And I was pleasantly surprised! Sure, it didn't need to be made, and I will always prefer the original, but out of all the live action Disney films I've watched (most of which I didn't like), this might be the only one that I would actually choose to rewatch again. It wasn't perfect, but it was enjoyable.
I'm gonna go into some into some specifics now so spoiler warning for the next bit.
Overall, it was a lot of fun and I didn't get bored at any point (which I did with Aladdin...)
Halle Bailey was amazing as Ariel and I think the casting was great!
There's a bit when she's turning the pages of a book underwater and I know we're taking creative liberties because of the whole mermaid thing but the level of realism that is in it means that it doesn't make sense for that book to not be mulch!
Melissa McCarthy was really good as Ursula (I really needed them to get Ursula right in this film) and minus a couple of points where some of the comedic moments didn't quite fit the character's vibe, the overall performance was pretty true to the original.
Ursula having glowing tentacles is one of the best additions and I love it!
Flotsam and Jetsam look amazing but I wish their glowing eyes were a little more obvious. There wasn't quite as clear a distinction and I think whiting out the opposite eye could've helped a bit. (Also, they don't speak but I feel like that would've actually ruined the vibe more than anything).
Some of the movie is too dark and I mean that literally. There are a couple of scenes where I can't tell how much I would actually be able to see outside of a dark cinema.
All of the original songs are still great!
They removed the whole "body language" segment from Poor Unfortunate Souls, which is a bit of a shame, but I can understand why. It was still cool to listen to though.
Some of the lyrics in Under the Sea don't make quite as much sense because the fish are no longer playing instruments (for realism reasons) but the dancing sea stars were great and the dancing limpits reminded me of the mushrooms from Fantasia.
Les Poisson isn't in it! :(
Some of the new songs were fine, but they don't fit. I don't actually mind Wild Uncharted Waters but because it's different from the rest of the soundtrack, it feels like the film just stops to make way for a random music video and it's a bit strange (and did Eric actually get on a boat because that doesn't make much sense in the context of the moment?)
The Scuttlebutt... exists.
Scuttle was never one of my favourite characters anyway so... meh, Flounder is... a crime, and Sebastian is actually okay for the fact that he's made to look realistic. He still made me laugh on multiple occasions and Daveed Diggs did a great job voicing him so that was good.
Some of the merpeople look a little odd out of the water. Like they almost look slightly oily? I think they're just supposed to look wet but the CGI went a little bit off.
ERIC IS BETTER IN THIS FILM THAN THE ORIGINAL!
He actually has a bit more of a personality in this and Jonah Hauer-King did an excellent job playing him.
Eric and Ariel are giving a little bit more focus together in this film and they have some more obvious shared interests. I loved this because their connection felt more believable and while it does still only take place over 3 days, I actually felt the relationship develop in this.
GIANT URSULA IS AWESOME! (Don't know how much you'd see in any room with a light source though).
I feel like I had more points than this... I'm sure they'll come to me.
General thoughts are that it's not as good as the original, there are a couple of bits that could be worked on, but overall, really enjoyable and good for a fun couple hours.
Although, on a quick side note, if you're like me and get motion sick, there may be a couple of moments that might make you feel a little bit ill. It wasn't so bad that I had to look away at any point, but there are some spinning shots or tracking shots through the water that my motion sickness didn't love.

just came back from watching the little mermaid & it was so cute!
i really enjoyed the changes they made so eric was just as interested in the sea as ariel was about the land. that was sorta hinted at in the animated version but in this version is clearer & actually makes it believable that would have a meaningful relationship despite their differences aside from mutual attraction. plus with his mother also wanting to keep him in the castle like triton wants ariel to never go into the surface, they have more to bond on. overall i really liked what they added to their relationship, that was very much needed.
ngl, aside from jessica alexander who did a very memorable job as vanessa, i didn't enjoy everyone else's performances, i hope she gets more acting gigs from this. halle bailey did such a great job embodying ariel as a curious & driven girl that she's supposed to be, jonah hauer king also did a great job as a very charismatic eric -- but everyone else was just...it wasn't the best. i think javier bardem was missing a bit of the warmth that made triton come off as a concern parent wanting to be firm rather than controlling & (almost) abusive in the way he tries to keep ariel from the surface world. melissa mccarthy was missing more sass & i never felt as intimidated by her ursula as i did with the animated version until the final battle, we needed more of that. i feel like jacob tremblay didn't get to shine more as flounder, ariel's inseparable best friend, bc instead there was more time given to sebastian & scuttle that should not have been given. daveed diggs had huge shoes to fill & unfortunately he never truly did accomplish it, but they also made sebastian very naggy & annoying so that's not all his fault, & awkwafina's rapping for that new song....that was so awful i was cringing in my seat ngl it was giving awful, disjointed, shoehorned kpop rap in the middle of anotherwise good song.
that being said, my enjoyment of the movie wasnt too dampened bc halle & jonah had amazing chemistry & charm to sell me completely on their relationship. it never felt awkward when ariel couldn't reply back vocally bc she was still conversing w eric in other ways, like how she gets him to figure out her name & how she asks him to keep telling her stories of his travels by pointing on maps. it's not a perfect movie, but it's still enjoyable & halle sounds so amazing in every song, she truly has the voice of a siren.

The Little Mermaid (2023)
Tumblr media
So Disney has gone overboard with these remakes, like we now have 3 different live action remakes of The Jungle Book (One is direct-to-video, but that’s beside the point.) I find myself, like many Disney fans constantly asking who asked for this and with them ranging from fine to God Awful! Which brings us to the subject of yet another (controversial) live action remake, The Little Mermaid.
Tumblr media
You know the story, Mermaid longs to experience the world of the surface and learn more about it, gives up her voice to become human, hijinks ensue. Then she gets her happy ending.
The story is mostly unchanged, but the biggest changes are in characterization and certain details.
There were a lot of progressive changes, and that’s one of the film’s biggest strengths; there was a huge emphasis on Caribbean Island culture, as opposed to *insert European country here* given the surface kingdom a lot more to do. I found myself conflicted over this choice but I also feel like this was a scenario where someone was going to be displeased no matter what, and for what it’s worth I’ll take this over the worst case scenario.
There were a couple of new songs that were provided by my candidate for the current hardest working man in show business, Lin Manuel Miranda. The first being a song for Prince Eric, which left no impression on me; and ScuttleBug which feels undoubtedly like one of songs, from the delivery to the wordplay.
Composer Alan Menken returns to provide an impressive score for this remake, even if the score itself is a remake.
The visuals are brilliant, at least on land, it’s like Director Rob Marshall had no interest in making the Mermaid part of The Little Mermaid visually appealing.
Tumblr media
The cast was solid, object of controversy Halle Bailey has a decent acting resume and this is no exception; in spite of her performance fluctuating.
Tumblr media
Daveed Diggs does a hilarious Jamaican accent as Sebastian, Awkafina and Jacob Tremblay were fine as Scuttle and Flounder respectively.
Tumblr media
Melissa McCarthy managed to use her scenery chewing powers for good as Ursula, and her vocal training definitely paid off.
Javier Bardem gives a commanding performance as King Triton.
However Jonah Hauer-King, was forgettable.
Tumblr media
As far as adaptations, The Little Mermaid was fine; nothing special kinda like hot pocket, filling but not necessary. I would definitely say it’s one of the best live action remakes, but the bar is insanely low.
I give The Little Mermaid a 3 out of 5.

Most wanted mfcs? and most wanted occupations? What species do yall wanna see more of? Thanks!!
Here's some male faceclaims that our players have mentioned wanting in the past: Jonathan Bailey, Brian Michael Smith, Tom Hiddleston, Laith Ashley, Manish Dayal, Rene-Jean Page, Daveed Diggs, Luke Evans, Richard Armitage and Jason Momoa. For occupations, honestly can't think of anything specific but we've got a lot of locations that are hiring employees or needing ownership and would love to see those filled in. As for species, personally, I'd love to see more sirens in town, also some celestials or infernals, or even some hybrids. Of course would be happy with anything your imagination can conjure! Thanks for the interest!

The Little Mermaid: A Part of my World Come To Life
Tumblr media
Looking back, I have never been so excited for a Disney live-action movie.
It was my biggest childhood fantasy dream came to life. I feel like I have waited for this for 20 years and now, I finally saw it and I couldn't ask for anything more.
Before the actual review of the movie, I'll take myself (and you guys) on a little trip down memory lane for a little bit.
*nostalgic music*
I was about 3 or 4 (Idk exactly) when I saw Disney's The Little Mermaid for the very first time and her song "Part of your World" was one of the very first songs that I have ever learnt to sing.
Of course, I can't remember most of this but I remember being mesmerized by Ariel and the environment of the entire underwater kingdom. I love her so much that I even dreamed of becoming a mermaid at one point in my life.
I also collected a few Ariel-related merch, including a paper doll that I folded in the bottom part that made it seem like she had fins and I walked around the hallway of my house and waved her around and imagined she was swimming.
I would also like to share that with the few times that I have been to Disneyland (I've only been to HongKong Disneyland and Disneyland California), I have always teared up at everything Little Mermaid-related. Hearing the melody of her theme song always fills my eyes with tears. Seems like I'm exaggerating, but it's true.
Throughout my childhood and teenage years, Ariel had a constant spot in my top 3 favorite Disney Princesses (she's usually switching with Belle for the top one spot) and I seemed to always wish for a live-action movie.
And now, it finally came true....
*a little over 6 months ago*
During D23 last year, the first teaser to the live-action Little Mermaid movie starring Halle Bailey was revealed and I remember watching it over and over again, just to listen to her sing the last bit of Part of your World and I admit that I teared up just hearing that.
It was at this point that I knew that this film is something that my child self and present self would enjoy.
And I did...
The Movie Review
This review will not need spoiler warnings because the movie is still the same story (with a few twists that I will not reveal for the sake of still leaving you guys with surprises) from the original 1989 animated movie.
First off, the review of the characters and I shall start with the titular character herself, Princess Ariel. Ariel (Halle Bailey) is mesmerizing. Ariel's signature instrument is her voice and Halle just hypnotized me with it. Every time she vocalizes and sings, I just turn awestruck and teary-eyed. She's meant to be Ariel and I couldn't imagine anybody else playing my favorite princess.
As for Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King), he is a good love interest and character overall. I love how he adventurous he is. He may have a solo song in the movie so watch out for that.
The king himself, King Triton (Javier Bardem), is executed well. In the scene where he finds out that Ariel is in love with a human, his anger just emanated through the screen and I frightened myself a bit and I shared Ariel's sadness when he destroyed her entire collection because I would have reacted the same way.
No story is complete without a villain and Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) just serves. I love how funny she can be, especially with how Melissa enunciated some of her lines and sang her song "Poor Unfortunate Souls". She's one of those villains who can make me scared and laugh at the same time.
The side characters Scuttle (Awkwafina), Sebastian (Daveed Diggs) and Flounder (Jacob Tremblay) remains to be iconic. Their dynamics with each other is just hilarious and they provide some of the most light-hearted moments in the film.
Songs wise, I have nothing to complain about because they simply revamped the original music from the original film and turned it into something more modern. I also love the new songs that Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote for the film. I will be listening to them on repeat, for sure.
I am not one to be technical so I don't really have complaints about the CGI and stuff like that. I know there are some flaws because movies are not made to be perfect and I simply like to appreciate everything.
I would like to thank the cast and crew for bringing this amazing story that I love so much to live-action. It is stunning, mesmerizing and enchanting. I also like to thank Halle Bailey for bringing Ariel to life. I couldn't imagine any other person playing her than you!
*conclusion*
I am honestly still reeling from this movie experience because I really feel like I've waited for this my whole life and now that it's done, I just want to relive every single moment. I will surely watch it again when it comes on digital because how can I not?
Ariel's story is a part of my world that I have been retreating to for comfort and happiness and seeing that story come to life just gave happiness to my inner child. This is a movie that I will forever love and cherish.
Be sure to join Ariel and friends under the sea by watching "The Little Mermaid" this Friday in theaters.

Power Rangers Zenith Force
Tumblr media
(Logo by MasterPikachu6)
Tumblr media
Throughout the universe there are countless teams of Power Rangers. Each one drawing power from the Morphing Grid. For eons only the Rangers could access this great power. That is no longer true. Upon capturing a Morphing Master the robotic Machination experimented on him gaining access to the Grid. Once they gained access they proceeded to drain about 50% of its power severely weakening every Ranger throughout the universe. However one of their tests into harnessing the power resulted in four of their Cogger foot soldiers gaining sentience. Filled with guilt and horror at the actions of their creators they rescue the Master and flee to Earth. During a fight against the Machination’s forces a surge of power from the Grid via the Master turns a set of prototype blasters into morphers allowing the five to become the Zenith Rangers and protect what’s left of the Grid from the Machination. Taking shelter with a robotics inventor the Coggers gain civilian holograms to help them blend in while in hiding from the Machination. Protectors of the Grid! Power Rangers Zenith Force!
Tumblr media
Augost- The Powerful Ranger! White Zenith Ranger! A space explorer from Eltar, a near death experience left Augost with a strong connection to the Morphing Grid marking him as a Morphing Master despite never morphing into a ranger. It was his capture by the Machination that granted them access to the Grid. A fact that fills him with much guilt. Thanks to his research into the Power Gears, Bart was able to create a special pair of Gears that grant Augost and him their battilizers. When Augost uses his  DragonSaurus Gear he gains a suit of armor based on the Dragonzord and is armed with a powerful drill. Later on Bart develops the Zenith Power Cannon for Augost. This mighty blaster allows him to channel the power of various Ranger teams by theming and even summon energy copies of rangers from those teams. The cannon also turns into the Zenith Jet Zord for Augost to pilot. Face Claim: Dev Patel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rex- The Mighty Ranger! Red Zenith Ranger! As a robotic life form Rex believes it is his duty and responsibility to protect the more “squishy” organics. He’s even appointed himself as Augost’s personal protector. Face Claim: Pedro Pascal
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maxi- The Overdrive Ranger! Blue Zenith Ranger! Maxi loves knowledge and learning new things. She’ll scan information as fast as possible and relay it to her friends. When she talks about a topic of particular interest her voice will even speed up to the point organic ears cannot register her words. Face Claim: Emerald Fennell
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leonidas- The Wild Ranger! Yellow Zenith Ranger! Admiring the vast wild life of Earth Leonidas can’t help but feel like humanity should be ashamed of how they’ve treated the wild. In secret he wishes he could be truly organic so the wildlife he loves would not fear his presence. Face Claim: Daveed Diggs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Titania- The Mystic Ranger! Pink Zenith Ranger! Titania enjoys fantasy in all its forms. Movies, stories, even fanfiction she reads online. The only problem is she can’t always tell the difference between fiction and reality. Face Claim: Ayo Edebiri
Tumblr media
Bartholomew- The Pirate Ranger! Gold Zenith Ranger! Bartholomew is a brilliant yet eccentric robotics inventor who meets the Rangers soon after their escape from the Machination. Fascinated by the Coggers he gives them shelter in his lab where he helps them examine the Power Gears. After a battle with a Cogger he discovers a set of three spare Gears he uses to create a morpher of his own. While examining the Gears he accidentally connects two of his robots to the Grid bringing them to life. He can combine with these robots to access more power. RedRobo- The Burning Bushido Ranger! Gold Zenith Ranger! In this form Bart and RedRobo burn with the power of Kanji-Ryuko. BlueBot- The Shining Crystal Ranger! Gold Zenith Ranger! In this form Bart and BlueBot surge with the power of the Zeo Crystal. Thanks to his research into the Power Gears, Bart was able to create a special pair of Gears that grant Augost and him their battilizers. When Bart uses his  DragonSaurus Gear he gains a suit of armor based on the Q-Rex and gains the ability to manipulate time slightly. Face Claim: Matthew Gray Gubler
Tumblr media
Celia- The Dark Ranger/The Battle Ranger! Purple Zenith Ranger!- Captured by the Machination she was subjected to brainwashing to turn her into their weapon to defeat the Zenith Rangers. She managed to resist the control as long as she could but in the end she broke. Now believing herself to be a loyal member of the Machination they set her loose on the Zenith Rangers as their Dark Ranger. In battle against the zords she would pilot the Dark Mechazord During one such battle Augost’s link to the Morphing Grid allowed her to briefly breaking free she turned on her captors until she was brainwashed once more, her mind pushed to the breaking point. During the next battle Augost finally managed to break her free and she joined the Rangers. She also reunited with her girlfriend.
She pilots the second Zenith Megazord when needed. Face Claim: Ciara Hanna
Power Gears- The Power Gears are gears the Machination created during their experiments into the Morphing Grid. Each one contains the power of a team of Power Rangers. During their escape from the Machination’s station the Rangers stole a set of the Gears. The default Gear allows the Rangers to summon a weapon or attack from the team the Gear is based on. A charged up Power Gear is called a Mega Gear and allows the Rangers to summon the weapon of the primary Megazord of that team. Zenith Megazord- The combined form of the Jet, T-Rex, Hauler, Lion, and Dragon Zenith Zords. The Zenith Megazord can summon various Zords by theming to attack their foe. The Megazord’s finishing move allows them to summon and channel the power of all the Ultrazords that have come before. The Machination Following the Z-Wave the surviving members of the Royal House of Gadgetry, the princes Gasket and Sprocket and princess Archerina retreated to the Machine homeworld to rebuild their forces before heading into a distant galaxy to begin anew. Now calling themselves The Machination they would invade planets and add their technology to their own, increasing their power.
Their ultimate plan is to find a way to tap into the Morphing Grid and harness its power for themselves. In order to do this they capture a morphing master and use him to study the grid leading to weaponry that can disrupt morphs. Their early tests resulted in four of their Coggers gaining sentience and escaping with the captive Morphing Master to Earth. They hide their station using dimensional shift technology to remain safe from attack while they send their forces to reclaim the Zenith Rangers.
King Gasket- A mighty king who has rebuilt himself to boost his power Queen Archerina- A tactical genius who plans the invasions. Duke Sprocket- No longer a child he is now a fearsome warrior General Caliber- The leader of the Machination’s forces. A terror in battle. Professor Circuit- The scientist in charge of adapting new technology into the Machination, he runs the Morphing Grid research. Chancellor Oracom- The royal advisor who sacrificed their body and had themselves installed into the royal data banks to increase their intelligence. Crowbolt- A robotic bird who gathers data and feeds it to Oracom. Cybotix- A robotic warrior built to replace The Dark Ranger after Celia was freed. Cogger*- The footsoldiers of The Machination fueled by the stolen energy of the Morphing Grid. Elite Coggers are given Power Gears giving them the power of a specific team of Rangers turning them into their “Morphed” form. Upon their defeat they will activate their Gear’s Mega function growing them to giant size.
Eventually the rulers of the Machination grow more and more obsessed with taking down the Rangers and getting revenge for the Machine Empire. This behavior confuses Oracom who considers revenge illogical and begins to doubt their ability to lead. After multiple failures they decide the time for action has come and sends a message to the Zenith Rangers with a way to reach the station. Once on board the Rangers engage the remaining rulers in battle before destroying the machine harnessing the energy from the Morphing Grid. However it’s revealed that the entire time the Grid has been slowly recharging itself. As a result the returning energy causes the Grid to spill over into the physical plane as bolts of power. Over a thousand worlds are struck by the bolts. To most the sensation is merely a larger than average static shock but to many others the impact goes deeper. In time it is discovered that those effected by the power bolts have become “Powered” with unique abilities and powers similar to the “civilian powers” some teams of Rangers possess. Some have their abilities from birth, others discover them in childhood or during puberty while others discover them through outside circumstances, usually a life threatening event. It is unclear how many “Powered” there are throughout the universe. The impact of the Grid’s overfill impacts the remains of the Machination as well, all the Coggers are granted sentience and Oracom takes command and sets off to make amends for the Machinations past deeds. Under Oracom’s leadership the new Machination gets to work rebuilding worlds ravaged by them. Mystech Force: When a Cogger steals a Mana Gem and implants it within themselves they gain mystical power drawing the attention of the Mystech Rangers. Thanks to a temporary boost from the Roc the team is able to morph to full power as they join the Zenith Rangers in taking down the threat. Morphers- Zenith Morphers Morphing Call- Zenith Power! Morphing- The rangers shoot out a Ranger Gear that passes over them. As it does it charges them with power before breaking apart and reforming as their Zenith suit. Location: Stone Canyon (Faces by Joekeybladeaura) *Morphed Coggers use the monsters from Donbrothers with the body suit from Zenkaiger Power Rangers Mystech Mages <---------Powerverse-------> Power Rangers Cyber Warriors

Do you know of any books that are little mermaid retellings or just about mermaids
do i!
I don't read a ton of Little Mermaid retellings- I find them a little bit bland usually, but I have been reading mermaid books in general! I would recommend checking out @droo216's podcast Of Slippers and Spindles, which suggested several Little Mermaid retellings a few months ago.
My most recent mermaid read has been Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant. This is a horror novel! This is about a scientific expedition to the Mariana Trench to investigate rumors of real-life mermaids- violent and horrific sea creatures that attack humans. I really enjoyed this book- sapphic romance, Deaf characters, really interesting creatures, and I learned I love ocean-based horror?? HOWEVER! It is a horror novel. There are deaths and some gore. Trigger warnings for blood & gore, and also drowning.
A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow is one of my favorite examples of an underused trope- modern fantasy, with magical aspects in our everyday modern world. Our main character is a siren, and it examines a lot of real-life Black experiences. I really enjoyed this one! Trigger warning for depictions of racism.
The Deep by Rivers Solomon is a speculative novella based on a really great song by the clipping (Daveed Diggs' band) about mermaid descendants of pregnant African women thrown off of slave ships. This book is also sapphic, and deals with the idea of generational trauma. Much more speculative than most books I read or recommend, so read a snippet before you dive in (ha!) to see if it's your thing. Trigger warnings for discussion of slavery and generational trauma as it relates to Black folk. May be more as well, it's been a year since I read this.
I'm also looking forward to reading Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen when it comes out in November of this year!

You’re Really Pretty
Pairing: Daveed x Reader
Request: “I really like your daveed fics, and I was wondering if you could do one where the reader is super flirty and always flusteres daveed” - @sweettreepersonabiscuit
Word Count: 1.4k
I heard my doorbell ring. Tonight I was having a party with all of the Hamilton cast, to celebrate opening night, which was yesterday. I was in the ensemble and performing the show for the first time with an audience was spectacular and electric.
Most of the cast was already here and I had music playing on the speakers. There was also a lot of drinking going on, so this would for sure be an interesting party.
I quickly ran over to the door and opened it.
I saw Daveed standing there. “Hey D, you made it” I said pulling him into a hug. He took a second to react, but then wrapped his arms around me.
We pulled away and I could see that he was a blushing a tiny bit. Here was the thing, I had a thing for Daveed, I’d liked him for a while now. I started to fall for him during rehearsal and those feelings had only gotten stronger.
I flirted with Daveed quite often, in hopes that he would notice and realize I liked him. I also was a pretty outgoing person and I totally felt comfortable acting a little flirty.
“You look really handsome” I said as I invited him in. “Oh...uh...thank you, you look...nice...too” he said, fumbling with his words. Daveed always acted a little weird around me, but I never knew why he did it.
He looked like he felt awkward, so I tried to change the subject. “Daveed, would you like to dance with me?” I asked him.
“Wait what?” He asked, and he froze. “Do you want to dance with me?” I asked, slower this time. “Um yeah sure” he said.
I grabbed his hand and pulled him into the living room where most of the dancing was happening. I put my arms around his neck. “Is this okay?” I asked him. He just nodded. “Here let me help you” I said. I took his hands and placed them on my hips and then put my hands back where they had been.
Daveed looked scared out of his mind. “Daveed, it’s okay. I’m not a porcelain doll, you can actually hold onto me, I promise” I reassured him. That seemed to calm him down. “So how have you been?” I asked him. He started talking about his day and he seemed more comfortable and the conversation flowed naturally. I guess he was fine as long as we were talking.
As we kept talking, he started to hold me closer and closer to him and it felt amazing to just be in his arms.
Then I saw Anthony walk over to us. “Well don’t you two look cozy” Anthony said, smirking. Then, Daveed froze and said “oh I have to go talk to Lin” and walked away quickly.
I lightly hit Anthony’s chest, “why would you do that?” I asked him. “You should of seen you two, you looked just like a couple” Anthony said. “Well you know we’re not a couple and you also know I like him. And he always acts nervous around me and I finally had his walls down” I told him.
“He acts all nervous because he likes you Y/N” Anthony said. I rolled my eyes and said “Okay yeah right”. Everyone in the cast had insisted that Daveed liked me, but I knew it couldn’t be true.
“Come on Ant, you have to be kidding. There’s no way” I told him, confidently. “You’ll figure out I’m right eventually. But for now, will you dance with me? You’re my best friend and Jas is too busy talking to Pippa and Renée” he asked me.
Anthony was always my dance partner for scenes in the show. So naturally, whenever the cast hung out, we ended up dancing. He was my closest friend in the cast and we got along so well.
“I would, but I think I should find Diggs. You scared him away” I said, giving him a hug and then leaving to find Daveed.
I walked around and didn’t see him. I walked into the kitchen and saw him leaning on the counter talking to Oak.
“Hey Y/N” Oak said. “Hey Oak, do you mind if I steal Daveed for a minute?” I asked him. “Yep, he's all yours” Oak said. I grabbed Daveed’s hand and dragged him out of the kitchen.
“You’re too pretty to be hanging in there where no one can see you” I told Daveed and he didn’t reply. I pulled him into my bedroom and closed the door. “Hey...um what...are we doing?” He asked, his voice shaky.
“Relax, we’re just going to talk” I said placing my hand on his chest to calm him down. I walked over and sat on the end of my bed. I patted next to me and he came and sat down.
“Can I ask you a question Daveed?” I asked, while I held his hand in mine, trying to calm him down. “Yeah of course” he replied. “Why are you always so nervous around me?” I asked him, genuinely interested.
“What do you mean? I don’t act nervous around you” he said, tensing up. “Come on Daveed, you’re acting all nervous right now. We’re friends, right? So why do you always get tense when we talk?” I asked him.
“That’s exactly why I get nervous” he said quickly. “Because we’re friends? Are you saying you don’t want to be friends with me?” I asked, a little confused.
“No, it’s that we’re just....nevermind” he said, dismissing it. I turned to face him completely, sitting criss cross on the bed. I turned him and made him do the same. I held both his hands and said “please just talk to me, you can tell me anything”.
“I can’t tell you why” he said, turning back so he wasn’t facing me. “You can’t get away that easy” I said, I crawled over and sat on his lap, straddling him.
He started to blush and wouldn’t make eye contact with me. I held his chin and moved it so he was looking at me. “Why do I make you so nervous Daveed?” I asked him.
“Because you’re really pretty” he mumbled under his breath.
“Daveed Diggs....do you have a crush on me?” I asked him, in shock. “Maybe” he whispered and quickly looked at the floor.
“Well then it’s your lucky day, because I have a crush on you too” I said kissing his cheek. His eyes quickly met mine. “Really?” He asked me, sounding very excited. “Yes really, you dork” I said, giggling.
He wrapped his arms around me and hugged me tight. I gladly accepted the hug and hugged him back. He held on like he might lose me if he let go. Then we finally pulled away.
“Daveed, can I kiss you?” I asked him. “Yes please” he said under his breath. I placed one hand on the side of his face and leaned in and slowly connected our lips. He kissed me back instantly. It was slow and sweet and then he slip in his tongue. I felt him smirk against the kiss and for the first time he didn’t seem tense.
I lightly pushed him back on to the bed. I was still straddling him and I laid kisses all along his jawline. He tightly held on to the back of my thighs. I connected our lips and he kissed me back with a passion I had never seen from him.
Then we both heard the door swing open. I jumped off of him and we both looked toward the door and saw Anthony and Oak standing there.
“I told you Daveed was getting laid tonight” Anthony said. “Come on man, if you kept your hands to yourself, I wouldn’t owe Anthony fifty bucks” Oak said, groaning.
Anthony ran over and gave me a kiss on the cheek, “thank you thank you thank you, I’ll split the fifty bucks with you”. “Um you’re welcome?” I said, unsure.
Then Oak dragged Anthony out and told him to “give the lovebirds some room”. They closed the door on their way out.
“Did you kiss me, just to win a bet?” Daveed asked me, hurt in his eyes. “No no no I swear, I didn’t know about their bet. I kissed you because I wanted to kiss you” I said, laying a quick peck on his lips.
“We should probably get back out there, before they spread what they saw around” Daveed said grabbing my hand. “Maybe we could introduce you as my boyfriend to the rest of the cast, I mean they’ll figure it out eventually” I proposed. “Yeah I like that idea” he said leaning in and kissing me slowly.
