What’s the rush?
I always start these things with ‘it’s been a while’ but in this case actually if you follow my blog you might have noticed I’ve done a fair few more posts than normal (which I guess arguably is something like two a year at this point so anything would be more than usual) Well, the main reason is I decided recently I wanted to do a couple of posts and I looked at who I had up next to do. I realised looking at my list I was getting close to the end of the Melee roster and a lot of them weren’t characters I was going to do a full game for. Due to this I tried to make it a goal to get the Melee characters finished by the end of the year. That didn’t work out as you could probably tell (no I’ve not secretly got Roy and Mr. Game & Watch ready to be posted tomorrow) but I am pleased I’ve gotten so many more posts done than normal. I hope if anyone does actively follow this blog (I understand if not given how often I neglect it) that it’ll be a nice surprise perhaps. With that said hopefully these aren’t too ‘rushed’, although that implies previous ones had heavy quality control or something.
For my actual list’s progress, well things haven’t been going too hot. Last time I mentioned playing through FF5 and Tales of Symphonia. Well, I got very into FF5 and finished it, however I was finding it hard to get the motivation to carry on with Tales of Symphonia. This isn’t a knock against that game, it’s just simply sometimes I have a block when playing certain games, the same thing happened with Dragon Quest 6 where I lost motivation and took a big break. When I came back to that however I really got into it and I actually found it a really enjoyable game overall. Tales of Symphonia has another aspect to it now however, the announcement of a port to the Switch. Honestly, with that announcement I decided it would probably be best to wait on the game until I can get it on Switch, especially as I can take screenshots with it then. Due to this I’ve skipped ahead to the next game on my list, or at least I intended to, however the other big issue with my progress with my list is that simply too many fairly big games have come out that I’ve wanted to play that have caused a delay to me getting to the next game. First was Live A Live, then Lego Star Wars the Skywalker Saga, then Xenoblade Chronicles 3, then Splatoon 3 and now Pokemon. Usually before now I’ve somewhat justified these things because often they have some aspect from my list, especially when spirits were still being added. This time however a lot of these games don’t really provide something specifically new that I could find to justify them having a place on the list, with only Splatoon 3 doing so (how I won’t say as it’s a spoiler for the endgame of single player.) There is one thing I’ve done which will help me progress with my list however, my PC is not capable of really running a fair few of the games I have on my list and can only access through Steam, so for the first time since, probably the Sega Megadrive I bought myself a non-Nintendo console and now own a Steam Deck. I haven’t admittedly played any of the games yet (I’m currently trying to sort out what I need to play it on my TV) however I have installed the majority of the games I planned to play, so for example Tekken 7 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Finally then, the last point I guess I should go over, although I don’t want to in detail, 2022 has been a really miserable year for me. I will say it’s not due to anything really ‘serious’ (well, I did lose my job but I have got a new job now at any rate, still didn’t make it less of a big deal completely changing what I’d just gotten used to) and it’s personal as opposed to world events (granted one of those world events resulted in me ending up having to self isolate on the first two weeks of my main holiday off work for the year so that was definitely not fun, granted I was pretty much asymptomatic.) it’s more been a lot of different things that have caused me issues that have built up over the year. This in part has led me to not make much progress with my list etc and there was one thing I don’t want to detail that actively caused issues, although I’ve gotten very lucky and been able to salvage most of it at least. I’m also a big worrier and there’s been various things I’ve felt are hanging over me a fair bit this year, one of which that really doesn’t help is what’s coming up for the 3DS and Wii U eShops next year which has resulted in me scrambling to make sure I get everything I want/need before that happens. A lot of the general discourse around games this year has been a somewhat miserable pit I feel even more than normal (then again, it could be that I’ve not been actively avoiding such discourse like I have previous years, I’m starting to think perhaps I should think a bit more about that for my own mental health in 2023.) so yeah, that on top of other things hasn’t left me feeling my best this year.
With all that negativity out of the way, here’s hoping for a good 2023, there’s already stuff on the horizon I’m excited for like the Mario Movie (really couldn’t care less about the Chris Pratt stuff at this point, I wouldn’t have chosen him but I think people are going overboard about what’s at worst to me a bland performance, not that that’s therefore ‘acceptable’ but I’m just saying there’s people they could have gone with who’d have actually made me hate the movie rather than just not think he sounds particularly good) and of course Zelda Tears of the Kingdom (although, I really really hope we see some actual information beyond another cryptic shot again personally, granted I’d imagine lots of people think we shouldn’t but we know less about this game now than we knew about Breath of the Wild in the period where all they’d shown off was the Great Plateau. I’ve got no knowledge on the subject but it doesn’t seem that good for marketing to me.) For my Smash Playthroughs I’ve got a nice mix of games I’m looking forward to getting to in 2023. Personally I think there’s a very real possibility I could finish every game on my list (besides unobtainable ones) up to the games that I chose to represent various Spirits and Trophies which would be a huge milestone. With that said, there’s a couple of pretty big games in there so it really depends how much time I dedicate to the list next year as well as what else might come out etc. With that said, if you read this nonsense then I’ll finish by saying I hope 2022 went ok for you and here’s hoping to a good 2023!

jimmy kaga-ricci part 1 (part 2 / part 3)
beautiful faces - declan mckenna
if there ever was a screen adaptation of iwbft i can 100% imagine this song playing while the boys are walking the red carpet at the wcmas, when jimmy is surrounded by stardom and “beautiful faces”. however, even though he has great ambitions, he is also pretty disillusioned by the world of fame, the power games, the fake friends and the stress - deep down he’d rather just stay inside and, for once, relax
i say a little prayer - aretha franklin
i like to imagine this as a song about jimmy’s love for rowan and lister, and how in relation to his faith, praying for them is one of his love languages
ashley - halsey
hoooooo boy, this song pretty much has jimmy’s entire arc shoved into 3 minutes; “standing now, in the mirror that i built myself / and i can't remember why the decision wasn't mine / but it seems i'm only clingin' to an idea now” - jimmy feeling like their original dream about starting a band, their childhood passion and wonder has been lost along the way, they’re only clinging to an idea “someday, when i burst into flames / i'll leave you the dust, my love / hope a bit of it'll be enough to help remember the / days when we came to this place / i told you i'd spill my guts, i left you to clean it up / i'm bursting out of the” - his dreams about breaking away; however, the fact that the line is sort of cut off abruptly shows how he isn’t quite ready to burst out yet, not until friday “is it really that strange if i always wanna change?” - rowan and lister don’t understand why he wants to leave the band “i told you i'd ride this out / it's gettin' harder every day / somehow, i'm burstin' out of myself” - in the second chorus we finally have that catharsis of him actually running away and deciding to do what makes him happy
humongous - declan mckenna
this is mostly about jimmy’s relationship to the media (including social media). he’s been very closely scrutinised for years now, and things like racism, transphobia, the j*wan photo, fuckin paul marks, even the bliss story have taken a toll on his psyche - and that doesn’t even begin to cover his paranoia that is strongly fuelled by the people constantly watching his every move. the line “do you care? / i'm big, humongous, enormous and small” sounds like a cry of despair - he’s made out to be this huge, untouchable god-like figure, while in reality he feels small and easily breakable, but nobody in the media cares about his real feelings
sweaters - blanks
jimmy and rowan wanting to have a chill evening and play splatoon or something instead of attending lister’s party
social - smallpools
same theme as sweaters. the “social” here could also be taken as part of the bigger picture of fame - “if you can hear this now / bow out, save yourself” could be jimmy warning others about the dangers of fame, so to speak
roaring 20s - panic! at the disco
rule of threes; jimmy feeling anxious at the party, surrounded by people he doesn’t know or care about, wanting to go home to his grandad, etc
lavish living - carey st
this song reminds me of the ark’s london apartment; first of all, it’s huge and lavish, as the title says. then there’s also several lines in the song that remind me of various scenes; “you're so upset so what's the point of me right now” - jimmy feeling helpless after the bliss story broke and not knowing how to cheer rowan up “met a fibber yeah you met him last month / he told you things and he said it wasn't love / you're so obsessed so what's the point of us // pull away from the party / i don't think that this is meant to be / but me oh my oh make me go crazy” - the party on tuesday, magnet making a move on jimmy, bicci undertones, etc
demons - hayley kiyoko
“it's creeping in, it's gonna get me by the end of the night / i'm sinking deeper, still, i'm reaching for the end of the light / burning in the lava / you can't go and pray this type of pain away” a song describing jimmy’s anxiety and paranoia
i spend too much time in my room - the band camino
stolen from @kindaorangey‘s jimmy playlist (+explanation), this song strongly highlights jimmy’s inner turmoil, him overthinking things, etc
hero - family of the year
“baby needs some protection / but i'm a kid like everyone else” jimmy didn’t ask to be worshipped. he often says that he doesn’t get why everyone looks up to him, “loves” him, etc when all he is is a normal guy
it ain’t me babe - nancy sinatra
similarly to hero, here we have jimmy trying to tell his fans that he isn’t their saviour, he isn’t the one they “want” and “need”
the archer - taylor swift
“i wake in the night, i pace like a ghost / the room is on fire, invisible smoke” you know on wednesday when jimmy comes back from his escape to the park and has a panic attack? this song feels a lot like that; it’s his mistakes and insecurities, the world and other people trying to tear him down, all of this culminating in him feeling unworthy, wondering “who could stay”, but then of course rowan is here for him, he could stay. in the end, however, the first line - “combat, i’m ready for combat” - is repeated, which in the context of iwbft could have a sinister tone - the worst is yet to come
midas - skott
this reminds me of jimmy wondering why the label, their management, and even lister and rowan actually want to go through with the new contract, why they want to be bigger and richer. there’s a lesson about the greed and capitalism of the music industry in there
some nights - fun.
“this is it, boys, this is war / what are we waiting for? / why don't we break the rules already?” fame feels like a war to jimmy by now, which is reflected by the joan of arc and the soldier motif in iwbft. on multiple occasions, he asks rowan and lister to just break away from all of it, rules and conventions be damned “so this is it? / i sold my soul for this? / washed my hands of that for this? / i miss my mom and dad for this? / no, when i see stars, when i s- / when i see stars, that's all they are / when i hear songs, they sound like a swan” once again we have jimmy’s realisation that fame isn’t worth it. he doesn’t see the glamour that everybody claims fame brings. additionally, the swan metaphor refers to the fact that swans only sing once, right before they die, which is in tune with the death motif in iwbft, everything feeling very close to the end additionally, @kindaorangey made some excellent points here
lifeline - we three
so far jimmy has mostly been going with the flow, not putting up much of a fight to get what he wants, letting other people “shiver, feel it, take it, break it, make it what you want and / lose it, choose it, find it , mind it, bruise it, use it how you’re gonna” - it being his life, basically. of course that changes on friday but i’m getting ahead of myself
sometimes - h.e.r.
“i had a plan, i had it mapped out / i knew where i was going when i left out / oh, you couldn't tell me that i wouldn't be there on time / i had some guarantees, i had a deadline / but now i know things change for better or worse / you could say that i'm the same, but i ain't adjusted to all the hurt” - once again, the theme of jimmy’s childhood dreams and hopes ending up worse than he imagined

Plot: Canyon Conquest - Part 5
((On that one faithful day, the Great Zapfish went missing for a week. And Callie was nowhere to be found in Inkopolis. Will the entire city’s power run out? Or will they find a solution to bring it back? The answers will surprise you.))
((WARNING: This story contains spoilers to Splatoon 2. For those who haven’t owned the game or completed story mode, please keep scrolling ahead. Thank you and enjoy.))
The song: Bomb Rush Blush continues to play in the radio while Fynn and Tundra were dodging incoming Octo-Missles. The Commander's new Octobot MK III is developed from all the previous Octo Weapeons from 2 years ago and formed it into one indestructible machine. The Commander shifted gears as the robotic arachnid started to hover like Octavio's ship. She dropped a huge Octo-Missile from above and it's heading straight towards them.
"Heads up...!" Tundra said, taking aim at the falling missile. She sniped the missile and sent it right back. It destroyed one of it's 8 legs, causing the prototype to wobble a bit. "Now, we know how to beat that thing.. Fynn, focus on the legs first!
"If we make it out alive with your friend on that chair, you have some explaining to do.." He watched the weaponized arachnid fall down, safely on the ground. At times like this, why did he bother getting up in the evening when there's power supply crisis.
As the Commander started moving and attacking again, Fynn examined the person who is driving the arachnid. The blue-ringed Octoling was wearing the same hypnoshades when he first encountered her. ("Hmmm... Maybe she's brainwashed, too... Those shades aren't just for show....") He thought. If he can get closer to the machine, he might be able to clear her senses. But how will he do that?
Tundra continued shooting of a few missles until she noticed Fynn was coming up with a plan of his. "What are you thinkin' about, anyway?" She continued shooting incoming projectiles.
"Remember when Dawn knocked me through a loop..? Maybe, I could save her by knocking her shades off, as well. I just need to use my head before I act.." It well may be the most reckless idea, he ever had. But he has one shot to save her like his sister did. He's not sure why, but he could somehow see the sadness behind her shades.
Tundra thought about his plan, before giving him a thumbs up. She too, wanted to save her Commander from corruption. "Just be careful, out there.. I'm going to take out a few legs, allowing you to climb up the cockpit."
"I don't know, what you two muttering about...? But I can't let you succeed, nonetheless..!" She stopped her assault to stare down at the two. "It's been a year and a half.. We've been searching from top to bottom for you... You've broken our trust after our mission together and you decide to leave without notice..!"
Tundra lowered her weapon as she walked right next to Fynn. She hated bringing up her dark past, but the Commander must know. "The reason why I left is because, I wanted to choose a different route than being an elite. That last mission took out my eye during a fight with an Anglerfish.. It was a suicide attempt and I was scarred for life..." She pointed at the eye patch on her right eye, followed by the two scars over her eye. She slowly took off her eye patch to reveal the whole eye to the Commander and Fynn. The eye lid was sealed shut for several months. "After the accident, I moved to Inkopolis to start a new life.. I wanted to follow another goal like that one Octoling who chased her dream.."
"Whoa..." Fynn was too busy, staring at her closed right eye. On his point of view, it looked badass of her. But on the inside, he felt sorry for her past. He was in the same fix as hers. After he quits his job as Agent 11, he got a job as a dishwasher at a family-oriented diner.
"Everything was going well, y'know.. I became a personal trainer to help a couple of squids to grow stronger. One of 'em is Fynn, right here. I still don't understand why you kidnapped him..? What's so special about my pupil..?" On the same note, Fynn was wondering about it.
"Tch.... Fine.. I'll save you all the trouble by explaining to you all..." The Commander cleared her throat and leaned in closer to them. "Before I was promoted to commander, I did some scouting on an unknown agent.. According to the list of agents from the past, he was called Agent 11. He claims to be the city's defender.."
Fynn's body went stiff when she mentioned to his former alias. He clenches his gut from where he got shot at in the empty streets. Becoming an agent, puts him through some unfortunate struggles and never-ending nightmares.
"I've been watching him from the shadows, while he did his part. From the Octobot invasion, the radio outbreak in Inkoplis, and even a rescue attempt to save a young Octoling from being tortured by two Inklings.. He was indeed, a hero. But... every hero's journey comes to an end." She looks at Fynn with a pleased expression on her face. "It's not easy, carrying on with your life while the past is dragging you down. Right, Fynn..?
Fynn clenched onto his Herobrush, shaking in fear and anger. After a year, she knew about his identity and his downfall. He closed his eyes, trying to look away from her. As he did, he felt a hand of Fynn's shoulder. He turned his head to look at Tundra.
"Don't listen to her... You've done so much to protect the city in the past.. Yeah, no one has ever heard of you. But, you've got the guts to fufill your destiny.. You're one of a kind and you have friends who got your back. It's about time to leave the past behind us and focus on our future.." Her sweet words were enough to bring Fynn back to his senses. Then, she glared at the Commander. "You think you've seen his agent work, but he's stronger than you think. Try to underestimate him or you'll regret it."
The Commander was taken aback by this, before letting out a disapproval huff. "Spare me.. You can't fulfill your destiny when you're dead..!!" She was done, talking to them as she readied herself for more. "I have no choice but end this, quick! Unless, you have what it takes to prove me wrong.."
"She's about to attack, again.. I'll cover you til the end.." Tundra put her eye patch back on and took aim if the Commander releases a few more missiles.
As soon as the arachnid is ready to move around, Fynn has both hands on his Herobrush. He held it close to him and got into his stance. This stance has the resemblance of a samurai warrior. Fynn stared at the Commander and then, at the 7 legs. ("Eimie... I give you my word.. I will come back, a new man...!") Without warning, Fynn charged at one of the legs. His leg weight training really paid off in a good way.
The Commander was shocked by his movements, but she went offensive and launched 4 missiles at him. The missiles were locked onto Fynn and about to chase him. If his tank runs out, he'll have a disadvantage. Unfortunately, the missiles isn't going to faze the pink Inkling.
Fynn was trying to the avoid the homing missiles, until he has an idea. He cleverly went for one of the 7 legs while the missles were on his tail. As he got closer and closer to the leg, he made a U-turn and moved to the next leg. The 7th leg was destroyed from the inksplosion, causing the arachnid to fall over. Fynn kicked it up a notch by serpentining around the other 3 legs, connecting the three inksplosions. There's only 3 legs left and the Commander's arachnid is losing its balance.
"You pink little pest...!!" The blue-ringed Octoling responds by trying to keep up with her prototype but with 5 missing legs, she's unable to function. "My plans will be for nothing, thanks to a former agent and a traitor..! But you forgot one thing..." Suddenly, the mouth of the arachnid began to open and revealed some sort of gas nozzle. "My machine is loaded with my deadly vemon and the Toxic Mist gas. Let's if you can handle my fumes..." She pressed a button to release to strong Toxic Mist into the battlefield. If they get caught in the fumes, they'll lose their ink even faster. Not only it does its job, but the deadly gas will slowly kill the two.
"This isn't good... Fynn, don't breathe in..!! This Toxic Mist is more threatening than before!" Tundra held her breath, trying not to choke in the toxic gas. This is the Commander's secret trump card when facing against bigger threats.
Fynn has witnessed the poisonous fog from before. If only, he brought his gas mask with him. He quickly, held his breath and backed away. At this rate, they won't endure for long. The mist surrounded both Fynn and Tundra, depleting their ink even more.
Unit 64 was still strapped to the chair, watching the whole fight. She couldn't just sit there and watch them perish. So, she tried to struggle with getting the restaints off of her. After a minute of wiggling her hands and rocking her chair from side-to-side, her arms are free from the restraints. She got to work by undoing the restraints by her feet. She made sure to be silent before unbuckling the restraints.
Alex broke free from her chair and stealthfully walked over to the switch for the ventilation van. It was next to the huge monitor, revealing the main event with DJ Octavio, Callie, and the three agents. She quickly turned on the fan as the propellers started moving fast. The huge gust of wind, blew away the deadly Toxic Mist. Feeling relieved, she pulled off the tape in her mouth and she was able to talk. "Destroy that damn nozzle before she releases more...!!" She cried, giving them the signal.
Before the Commander releases another gas of toxic, Fynn quickly recovers his ink tank by diving into his own ink. Once his tank is restored, Fynn pulls out an Autobomb. He chucked the robotic bomb with all of his strength to block the nozzle's entrance.
"What in the...!! It's jammed...!" The Autobomb didn't detect any nearby enemies while it continues to wiggle. The pressure begins to build up as the the arachnid's mouth is breaking apart. The bomb detonated after it was done wiggling, causing the arachnid's mouth to burst into pile of scrap and leftover gas. The blue-ringed Octoling quickly opened the hatch and ejected from her seat. She landed in front of them with her Octo Blaster in her hand. "Okay.. Now, I'm going to destroy you..!! I've worked so hard in creating the prototype..!!" She glares at Fynn through her hypnoshades.
"I can't allow you to harm the citizens of Inkopolis.. Like me and Tundra, they all have a dream to obtain.. And I won't let you take that away from them.. I'm going to finish what I started, right now..!!" Fynn's ink tank is half-empty. With a few swings, he might knock her shades off in time.
"Let's see you try it..!! I still got enough vemon left to splat you..!!" Her tank has enough ink to shoot a couple of ink blasts. One shot will splat him in the center. She instinctively charged towards Fynn with all she's got. She aimed at Fynn and fired her blob of ink.
Fynn closed his eyes, concentrating on his attack. He got into his samurai stance, again to prepare for the inevitable. He thought back to all the memories he did, over the years. His friends, his team, his family, even his girlfriend. They are all waiting for him to return. How they all miss him after so long. As if time stopped in front of him, Fynn cuts through the ink blast with one swipe. He started charging towards her. His tentacles and the ink spots on his body began to glow a radiant light.
The Commander stared at him in shock after he slices through her ink blast with a swing of a brush. "That's... impossible..!! My ink could've wasted you..!!" She couldn't let Fynn take her out that easily. She rapidly fired two shot at him while closing in on him. "Stay back..!! I order you to stay back..!!" She cried, trying to fend off the armed Inkling.
Her warnings meant nothing to him. Fynn cuts through another blob of her ink. As for the third ink blast, he swiftly dodges the final blow and he was in range with the Octoling elite. He grips onto to his Herobrush, preparing to swing. He looks into the Commander's face before he takes the final swing, knocking the shades out of her face. He could hear a loud shriek from the Commander as he watches her collapse onto the floor. She wasn't splatted, but she was out cold. "I'm done taking orders from you.." He said, taking a deep breath.
Tundra caught up to Fynn, lowering her weapon. She stared down at the passed out Commander. "I'm sorry, Eris... it has to be done..." She sighed, deeply before facing Fynn. "We did it, Fynn.. My girls are safe and sound for now.. Now then, we need to reach to the concert.. Phantom, Mantis, and Marie are still trying to bring Callie back.."
Alex approached to them in the middle of the chamber. Now that she is relieved of her duties as an elite, she doesn't have the will to fight anymore. She hands Tundra, the key to her flying vehicle. "...Take it. I'll try to shut off the system while you two can go see the fight. I'll stay here with Eris to see if she's coming back to her senses."
There wasn't time to have second thoughts. He took the keys from her and nods. "Thanks for blowing out the toxic gas.. If it wasn't for you, we'd be dead within seconds.. And sorry about wrecking your gun..." Even though she tried to splat him, he can't stay mad at her after what she did.
"....I'm still mad at you, jerk. You should be grateful, I returned the favor. Go after your sister or whatever.. She has fought her way to get here." Alex turns away to work on the controls.
"You're welcome." He left her to get to work and turned around to meet Tundra. He was wondering, how his sister and her new friend are holding up as the music continues to play in the background with Callie, singing Bomb Rush Blush.
"C'mon, champ. We're gettin' a VIP access to the fight. If only, we brought some popcorn for this fight." She joked around, before she left the chambers.
Fynn looked back at the monitor, showing the live concert. It pains him to see Callie on stage, brainwashed like he used to be. He loves the outfit and the tattoo on Callie, no matter how bad the situation is. After a few seconds to watching the monitor, he left the chamber with the keys in his hand. This ship will take him to the concert with ease. ("Dawn... Please be safe...") He prayed for his sister's safety and her partner as well. Someday, they will both have a future to succeed.

Splataclysm! - chapter 3
Hey hey hey! Remember that ridiculously weird Splatoon AU that I was writing for some reason? Well I am far from finished with it, so here, have another chapter about the tomato turning his life into a trainwreck, with some bonus Julerose just cause :D
(AO3)
After several more lost battles, Nath finally persuaded Tikki to sell him a Charger weapon – in other words, a sniper rifle-style weapon. She gave him the Splat Charger, with Splat Bombs and Bomb Rush as its Sub and Special, and told him in no uncertain terms that he needed to practise with it if he wanted to be any good.
“Charger weapons are difficult to get the hang of,” she said. “Don’t think that just because you’ve got long range, it’ll be easy to pick off your opponents. It can be very frustrating to use a weapon like this. Especially in Turf Wars.”
“Yeah, but at least this way people won’t keep splatting me from a distance,” Nath pointed out.
“Only if you’re good enough. Keep your wits about you, and don’t forget to leave an escape trail of ink, and–”
“Fine, whatever, thanks.”
Nath quickly rushed off with his new weapon, not in the mood for hearing Tikki’s long-winded, grandmotherly advice. Even hanging out with Rose was better than this – though Rose seemed to tire out after just one match and wouldn’t participate anywhere near as much as Nath would have liked.
He went into the lobby in Inkopolis Tower alone and joined a team full of strangers. They were transported to Moray Towers, a battle stage full of narrow zigzags that was high above the ground, overlooking the city. It was absolutely perfect for Charger weapons.
“This is gonna be good,” Nath said to himself, grinning. He looked aside and noticed that one of his teammates, a huge, intimidating guy with a cut through one eyebrow, was glaring down at him.
“If the other team has an E-Litre, we’re done for,” the guy grumbled, his voice low and gruff. Nath checked the inbuilt computer system to see that this guy was called Ivan, and he was lugging around a giant weapon called a Heavy Splatling.
“It’s okay, I’m a sniper too,” Nath said, holding up his Splat Charger.
“Not good enough. If your Charger doesn’t have a scope on it, you won’t have enough range to do much good. Unless you have an E-Litre 3K, which you don’t. There’s a reason this place is nicknamed E-Litre Towers, you know.”
Nath frowned. Surely having a scope on a Charger didn’t make that much difference, did it? And what if someone attacked you while you were looking through the scope? Sure it would be easier to aim, but you wouldn’t even be able to see what was going on around you. It would just be distracting. Nah, a Splat Charger was probably way better than a Splatterscope.
He looked back at the computer system to see the opposing team assembling at their base…
Uh oh.
The Slaughter Squad.
“What did I tell you?” Ivan muttered. “Max ‘Unsplattable’ Kanté and his E-Litre 3K Scope are gonna make sure we lose.”
“Well… I have long range too…”
“So do I, but we’re no match for him.”
Pfff, how pessimistic! This Ivan guy sounded like a bore.
The signal played for the match to begin. Nath pressed the trigger on his weapon to see that only a drop of ink fell out. Oh wait – he was supposed to charge it up first, wasn’t he? That was how Charger weapons worked. He held his finger down on the trigger for a few seconds, waiting for the beeping sound telling him that it was fully charged, then he let go and watched as a beautiful green line of ink shot away into the distance.
Nice!
His teammates had already started inking along the narrow zigzag paths leading down to the central area of the battle stage, so Nath transformed into squid form and jumped ahead. He remembered there being a spot that overlooked the central area which would be perfect for sniping from.
Aha, there it was! He settled himself there and then had a look around. Someone from the other team – Alix, probably – had already used a big purple Inkstrike in the centre of the stage. Nath charged up a shot and started covering it back up in thin lines of his own team’s ink.
Thwack!
He was suddenly splatted by none other than Max, who had been aiming at him from the sniper perch on the other side.
Well, two could play at that game! Nath hurried straight back to his sniper perch after respawning, and aimed a shot at where he knew Max was hiding. Unfortunately he missed. It was kind of hard to see from such a distance. Maybe a scope wouldn’t have been such a bad idea after all?
Looking down at the trail of ink his shot had left, it looked like he hadn’t even been able to reach the other sniper perch from here. Ugh, what was the point of using a Splat Charger if its range wasn’t even that good? Nath was about to go back into squid form and swim into the central area so he could reach better, when he was splatted again by Max.
No! Now he really had to get that guy back. He swam back to his sniper perch, then jumped off that platform into the central area. Okay, so it was a bit exposed here, but the thing about Charger weapons was that you could see exactly where they were aiming. They always had a little laser beam of light pointing out of them while charging up. So if Max was aiming at him again, then he would just be able to move out of the way. Right?
He saw Max’s charger line pointing at the ground several metres in front of him. Okay then, he must have been aiming somewhere else. Good. No need to move.
Nath aimed back up at Max’s sniper perch, knowing that Splat Chargers charge up shots far quicker than E-Litres, so surely he would be able to get Max before Max could get him–
At the last second, Max suddenly swung his weapon up and pointed it straight at Nath, splatting him.
No way. No way!
Max had tricked him? By pretending to be aiming somewhere else? That was just cruel!
Absolutely seething, Nath respawned and jumped down the zigzag ramps as quick as he could. He just had to splat Max back. He didn’t care if Max was considered “Unsplattable”, he had to do it. That guy was too annoying. And if he was going to resort to dirty tricks, then so was Nath.
He jumped into the central area and pretended to be aiming a shot at the wall. Once it was charged, he turned his weapon and quickly aimed for the sniper perch instead.
And missed. Quite badly.
How had Max made it seem so easy? Sniping was hard! And how were you supposed to aim that fast, anyway?
Well, whatever. Time to try again. Of course, now Max would know his location from his bungled shot, so he dipped into squid form and swam off to the side a little.
Only to be splatted by a Seeker from Kim, who had reached this area and was rapidly inking everything in sight.
Oh yes, of course – this was a Turf War. Nath was supposed to be inking turf, not killing people. Time to focus on that for now. Max could wait.
Respawning back at the base, Nath this time ran down the zigzags the long way, looking for turf to ink. It seemed that the reason the central area had been oddly empty was because the opposing team had used one of the side towers to access this half of the map without needing to go through the centre, and a savage battle had been going on here without Nath even having noticed. There was plenty of turf here that needed re-inking.
Nath started shooting long columns of ink down the ramp. Huh, who said that Chargers weren’t good at inking turf? When it came to Moray Towers, these weapons totally excelled!
And there, at the opposite end of the ramp, was an enemy. Judging by the pink hair and being half the height of everyone else, it was Alix. And if she was on this narrow ramp too, then surely it would be easy to splat her!
Nath charged up a shot and took aim. She simply laughed and dodged the attack, inking more turf and running up the ramp. He aimed another shot.
“Missed again!” she said, a wickedly malicious grin on her face.
Nath tried to charge up another shot, but noticed alarmingly that she was already getting close enough to be able to shoot at him with her own weapon. He remembered his Sub and threw a Splat Bomb, but it fell off the narrow sides of the ramp and into the abyss below.
Yikes. Time to escape.
He went into squid form and turned around to swim away, only to see that he had forgotten to leave an escape trail of ink, like Tikki had told him to. Dang it, did that bug always have to be right about everything?
The worst thing was that even when he was inevitable splatted, it was not by Alix. It was by Max. Somehow that guy had jumped into the central area and got close enough to reach. Was he aiming for Nath on purpose?
By the time Nath respawned, Kim was within sight, running around and inking everything. Ivan was standing far back and throwing out a barrage of shots with his Heavy Splatling, but Kim cheekily sending Seeker after Seeker forced him to keep moving and not have enough time to shoot consistently.
Wait. Nath could reach Kim from here, right? He began charging up a shot. Kim spotted the laser line and went into squid form, hiding away somewhere. He emerged rather far off and began shooting again, and Nath had to recharge his shot from scratch.
But if Kim had been swimming around in squid form, why hadn’t Nath been able to see him? Usually it was possible to at least see ripples in the ink when someone was swimming. Unless… it was an ability…
Rose had explained that to him once, though not very well. Something about certain clothing, or “gear” as it was called here, could give you particular powers, called “abilities”. Some made it that you could refill your ink tank faster, some gave you better defence stats, some gave you better attack…
And some made it impossible for people to see you while you were swimming in ink.
Kim had that, surely. He must have had that. And how useful would that be? Nath decided then and there that he needed new gear. He didn’t look fresh enough yet anyway.
The rest of the match was just as unpleasant. Nath resorted to standing on the home base and trying to ink turf from there, though Charger weapons were really not good at that. It just took so long to charge up, and only released such a thin line of ink! How the heck was anyone supposed to play decently with these?
The match results were not a surprise.
“The purple team wins, as if anyone was surprised by that,” the judging cat – some guy called “Plagg”, apparently – said at the end of the match, waving a flag at the opponents. “Anyway, don’t stay here too long. Next match begins in five minutes.” He vanished again.
Nath was half tempted to throw his Splat Charger on the ground and kick it. How was he not good at this weapon either? Nothing had felt right so far! Surely there must be something out there for him?
“…and I didn’t get splatted at all this match, so take that!”
“Yeah, but how many people did you splat? And how many people did I splat? I’m just better and you know it.”
“Well I inked more turf!”
“If you had used an Aerospray MG too then you’d have inked less than me!”
“Are we really doing this again? I already told you, I’m better at inking turf, and you’re better at splatting, so just stop rubbing it in all the time…”
It was Alix and Kim, arguing again. Their voices faded as they wandered off into the distance, although Nath could see Kim pushing Alix so hard she almost fell off the side of the ramp.
Nath was just about to leave when he saw that Max was watching him. Well, maybe. He couldn’t quite tell. Max always wore big black sunglasses that made it impossible to see where he was really looking. But he seemed to be looking right at Nath, almost like he was… calculating something.
It gave him a sudden funny fluttering feeling in his chest. He looked away quickly, pretending to be fiddling with his Splat Charger. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Max finally go somewhere else and Super Jump away.
Phew… Nath wasn’t sure why Max made him feel so weird. Was this a rivalry thing? Did they have a rivalry now? Maybe that was a good thing. A lot of fresh inklings seemed to have rivals – like Alya and Chloé.
Fresh! Of course! He was meant to go buy some new gear!
He Super Jumped back to Inkopolis Plaza, landing right in a crowd of inklings. There was one just in front of him, turned the other way, wearing what had to be the coolest beret he had ever seen. It was so fresh! He just knew something like that would suit him very well. He needed to buy it.
Cooler Heads – that was the shop where everyone bought head gear, right? He pushed aside a bunch of squids and rushed in.
Nath had never met the little anemone girl who ran the shop, but he had seen her through the windows. She had bright, colourful hair that spiralled out in every direction. He doubted that any of the hats she sold would even fit over that.
“Hello, welcome to Cooler Heads,” she said to him. “I’m Mylène. What would you like to buy?”
“I’m looking for a beret,” he said.
“We’re sold out of berets, sorry about that. There was only limited stock.”
“When will they be back in stock?”
“Um, I’m not sure. Sorry.”
What? No! There was no way he was giving up that beret for anything!
The door of the shop opened and in walked Ivan, grumpy as ever. As soon as he saw Mylène his face lit up into such a bright smile he looked almost unrecognizable.
“Mylène!”
“Ivan!”
Mylène ran over and jumped up to hug him. She was so small that her feet were left dangling off the ground.
“Ivan, what are you doing here? I thought you said you were doing Turf Wars all afternoon!”
“I was, until it turned out the Slaughter Squad had the same idea.”
“Aww, Ivan!” Mylène gave him a kiss on the cheek. “That’s perfectly understandable. If I were an inkling and if I did battles, I would hate being against them too!”
“Can I just stay with you this afternoon instead, dear?”
“Of course, sweetie!”
Dear? Sweetie? Nath did a double take. Surely this cute little anemone girl was not dating some weird, grumpy giant like Ivan??? But the way those two were snuggling up together, being more sickeningly sweet than Rose’s entire personality…
It was unfair. How was it that a guy like Ivan could get a girlfriend? He wasn’t fresh in the slightest!
Unless… simply having a girlfriend was enough to make him fresher?
Yes, that was it. Nath got it. If he wanted to be fresher, he needed a girlfriend. And more importantly, he needed that beret.
“Bye,” he said flatly, leaving the shop without those two lovebirds even noticing.
Now, where was that beret squid? Maybe if he asked them, they would sell it to him? No, no, he couldn’t talk to a squid as fresh as that, and no one would ever part with a beret that magnificent… Maybe he could ask someone if they knew where else to buy it from? Perhaps…
Getting completely lost, he stumbled into what seemed to be some dodgy back alley. He got the distinct feeling that he was not supposed to be here. But what if the beret squid was around here? He’d better keep looking.
“Psst.”
Huh? Where did that voice come from?
“Hey. Over here.”
He turned around to see a sea urchin slumped against the wall. She had a mass of black and purple spiky hair, sticking out all over the place, even covering all of one eye like Nath’s hair did. She was beckoning him over with a long, pointy finger.
Should he go? This seemed like the ideal place to get murdered. But then again, he had been losing so many battles lately, it wasn’t like he had anything to lose. He made his way over to the sea urchin and hoped she wasn’t about to stab him.
“Hey. You look like you could use some help.”
“Oh, um, it’s no big deal,” he muttered.
“Alright then, newbie.”
Wait, she could tell that he was a newbie? No, that was bad! Surely with that beret he wouldn’t look like a newbie! “Okay, I just saw an inkling with a really cool beret and I want it but the shop doesn’t have it,” he said.
“Then you’ve come to the right place,” the sea urchin said. “My name’s Juleka. If you ever need any gear that the shop doesn’t have, I can always get it for you. Through definitely legal means, of course. For a price.”
A price? What kind of price? He wasn’t going to sell his kidneys for a beret. And definitely legal means? That sounded like a lie.
But he wanted that beret. He wanted it so much. And what would this Juleka think of him if he had the beret? Not a newbie anymore, but an actual fresh squid!
“Alright, what’s the price?”
“A Super Sea Snail.”
“A what?”
“Super Sea Snail. You can win them by competing in Splatfests.”
Splatfests? He had heard of those. Everyone picked one of two teams based on choices between random things, eg food vs water, and then would have battles to prove which team was better. The Squid Sisters ran the festivals. But there wasn’t one scheduled for like, a whole week or something! He couldn’t wait that long!
“Can’t I pay something else?”
“Hmm. 30000 coins.”
“I don’t have that much money!”
“Well then sorry, but you’re not getting your beret.”
Nath kicked the wall. “No no no no no no! Ugh, if only I had won more battles, I might have had enough money! Why won’t Rose just help me? Maybe she would lend me money? I don’t know…”
“Wait. You know Rose? Rose Lavillant?”
“Yeah, why?”
The part of Juleka’s face not obscured by her hair had gone red. “Do you… um… think you could get her number for me? I’ll give you the beret for free if you do that.”
“Why do you want her number?”
Juleka looked at the ground, fiddling with her bangles. “She’s… um… awesome. And I don’t have the guts to tell her in person.”
“You want to ask her out by phone?”
“By text.” Juleka mumbled some more stuff about Rose, too quiet to hear.
“Fine,” Nath said. “I’ll get you her number, and you get me that beret.”
She smiled up at him, and he noticed with alarm that the one eye he could see was bright red. Holy moly… what chance did someone like that have with an angel-type like Rose? Well whatever, that was none of his business. He walked off back towards the less dodgy parts of town.

Meanwhile, Agent M and Agent C were managing Alexandria District while Agent 7 was away. They recently reported to him that a meteor is coming to Inkopolis, but the time it's taking for it to reach the city is unknown.
Base of Operations and Conference - Alexandria District, Inkopolis - 10:30 AM
Maps and Charts were being reviewed, Military Tacticians were organizing the troops and their positions, the Civil Defense are already developing Safe Sectors in Inkopolis for evacuations, and Alliances were already unifying to defend the city as a whole.
Kitzeh's Kettle Pub, Octo Valley - 10:30 AM
When the Olympian Champions and their allies returned to Octo Valley, they left the Pub and separated when they reached Cuttlefish's Shack. Calypso and Cassandra were the first two to go off, heading to their island to organize their Organization's militia. Kitzeh stayed in Octo Valley to help the Octarians; Willow also stayed in Octo Valley to wait for Celeste. Agent Blueshift and Agent 2 said their goodbyes to Nebula before leaving to help organize the Agents they made; Nebulous follows them to help organize the superheroes if there were any. The Olympian Champions made their way to Alexandria District with Agent 7. Suzy, who is currently carrying the inheritance of the role of Agent 0, was waiting for them, wanting to help Agent 0 ever since the deaths of Sapphire and Emerald. She makes her oath to keep watch.
In Alexandria District, Justinian and Hera went off to talk with Sea Angel Splatoon; Hermes and Anteros stayed with Agent 0 to have a chat with Suzy. Agent 0 told her that if she is to help the Olympian Champions, she would need to take an oath like everyone else. She took it for the sake of Sapphire and Emerald.
Camille, Nebula, and Telemachus were the only ones that went on ahead to follow Agent 7 to the Base of Operations and Conference. Before they did so, they stopped at Telemachus's Dorm to put on their Agent uniforms.
Once they four are inside, Agent M and Agent C turned to salute to Agent 7.
"Where've you guys been?" Agent C asked.
"And where are the others?" Agent M added.
"They split up to prepare for what is to come from that meteor," Agent 7 replied, "And we might want to make the preparations fast. Are all safe sectors established?"
"Safe sectors are already established," Agent M replied, "We just need to perform evacuations and immediate fortification afterwards."
"That's already starting as we speak," Agent C mentions, "Operatives here are saying we have about 3 days."
"....How slow is this meteor?" Camille wondered. She folded her arms and shook her head.e
"As for the rockets?" Agent 7 never used the rocket-based weapons, but it was possessed by his branch for several reasons.
"The ink-based ones or the destructive ones?" Agent C questioned.
"Either type of rocket is fine, but I see the destructive ones are recommended for this situation." Agent 7 walks over a to a computer that's showing the meteors.
"If Cassandra were here, she would've helped identify what's really coming," Telemachus comments.
"It bet it's not the Titans," Camille grumbled.
"Titan!" One operative shouted.
"Titan!!!!" Another operator joined the sudden shouts.
"Kill the Titans!!" Another operator falls off their seat.
"Kill!! Kill!! Kill!!!!" Another quickly get up and runs out of the room. "Kill all of them."
Another Operator just screams.
All the operations in the room kept rambling about titans, about killing them, and other stuff. Camille hasn't heard that in the while, but it seems this sudden shouting is getting on her nerves.
Camille snaps. "Everyone, shut up!!! There isn't even a titan present in Inkopolis! Why would Uncle Sev higher you all if you're going to be this stupid. Do you even realize a meteor is coming right towards--!?!"
Nebula grabs Camille. "Cammi -- calm -- down!"
Agent M nods to Nebula with approval while Camille is calming down. Telemachus offers a large fruit gummy for Camille to have as an edible stress reliever.
"Our operatives here actually found life on the meteor," Agent M stand next to Agent 7 and shows him the heat signatures and satellite photos, "And Octo Valley's operatives are sending us their drone photos."
On a bigger screen, a window pops up, notifying that the drone photos have come. An operative quickly opens it up and started rambling biology, anatomy, and other scientific observations.
"So what is it, M?" Nebula asked.
"It's.... It can't be..." Agent M is too shocked.
"Its...." Agent C is also shocked.
"It's what???" Camille asked.
"It's...." Agent 7 was looking at the drone photos.
Everyone in the room except Agent 7, Agent M, Agent C, Camille, Nebula, and Telemachus started to shout in sync.
"It's the Titan--!" The operator were cut off by Agent 7.
"That's it! Enough! Agent Alpha is right: This is serious!" Agent 7 still had to address Camille by that Agent name. "If you don't cut this carp right now, we're not continuing operations until we can act like adults!"
There was silence in the room.
"Thank you, Uncle Sev." This is the first and only time Camille would say that to him, but this first time is with a gummy in her mouth.
Camille almost forgot about the Nemean Clock that she brought; it's currently in her inventory in the form of a scabbard. She needed to give it to Agent 7 as she can tell why there's a "VII" symbol on it. The cloak has decided to choose Agent 7.
Currently, it doesn't seem to be the time to give the cloak to Agent 7 just yet.
An operative detects something; he looks at Agent 7. "Sir! We detected three unidentified objects coming towards Inkopolis, coming from the meteor!"
"Fire at them--!" Agent 7 ordered.
"Firing Destruct-Type Rockets at objects." Another operative presses a button.
A rocket speeds into the sky, divides into three smaller versions, and hit the oncoming objects. But once they were hit, the meteors were directed to three locations: Arowana Mall, Kelp Dome, and Blackbelly Skatepark.
"Is there any Splatoons playing turf wars in those areas?" Agent M asked an operative.
"Positive." The operative shows a drone's camera screen, viewing Blackbelly Skatepark. "Both teams aren't harmed, but they can't escape the area. The horde pouring out of that meteorite is scattering occupy the site."
"Getting clearer visuals on the Splatoons now." Another operator brings up eight more windows to view the faces of the inklings. "Identifying them as--"
"The Galaxa Gems!?!" Camille recognizes Nova and Hachi on screen.
"And the Frosted Stars as well!" Nebula points out the four windows showing face shots of Terra,  Bits, Comet, and Lucy.
"And it seems the Neo Nexus Corp are in Kelp Dome." Agent 7 can remember his time going there with the original Nexus Corp.
"Uhm guys, isn't that the kid that interrupted one of your broadcasts as the Neo-Squid Sisters?" Telemachus points to two windows recently opened showing an image of a reseda green 10-year-old and a blue-gray 14-year-old; both are an inkling-octoling hybrid.
It was Vix and Rasbel, and they were trapped in the Arowana Mall with their mothers, Mercury and Cell.
"Vix!? Not again!!" Camille assumes he was wandering off again; this time it was into danger.
"And that's the girl that helped us get away from the crowd of fans that one time!" Nebula recognized the gray-blue inktarian as Rasbel.
"We have to split up," Telemachus recommended.
"You do realize the risks right?" Agent M reminded.
"I know it's cliche, but we have to do this." Telemachus looks at Camille and Nebula, speaking as Moemura, "You guys would do it, right?"
"Well if our friends are involved, yes!" Camille takes out Athena's spear. She's already in her Olympian form. "I'll go help Vix and his family."
"I'll go help out the Frosted Stars and Galaxa Gems." Nebula takes out Poseidon's Trident and gets into her Olympian Form.
"And I'll handle cooperating with Neo Nexus Corp in the Kelp Dome," Telemachus puts on Hades's Helmet, becomes invisible, and leaves the room.
"Once you guys get the bystanders out of there, Agent M and C will send reinforcements to handle the hordes." Agent 7 takes out his N-zaps.
Agent C and Agent M salute to Camille
"May Athena guide you, Camille," Agent M reminded.
"I feel like she's always with me." Camille turns around and runs off with Nebula following her.
With Telemachus already heading to the Kelp Dome, Camille and Nebula separate to make their way to Arowana Mall and Blackbelly Skatepark respectively. On the way, their friends and allies split up to help them. Nebula, took Justinian and Sea Angel Splatoon as backup for the Skatepark; Camille had Anteros, Suzy, And Agent 0 coming with her to the Mall.
Agent 7 left Agent M and Agent C in charge of Alexandria District so that he can go with Telemachus to relive some old memories.
Nebula arrived at the Blackbelly Skatepark an hour later, and she can see both the Frosted Stars and the Galaxa Gems occupying the central tower. The meteor that crashed can be seen nearby; it wasn't even a meteor that crashed -- it's a stronghold. An army of minotaurs and werewolves is coming out with a few groups remaining in the stronghold to perform long-range fires. The rest were just storming the skatepark, trying to attack the two Splatoon stuck there. Since they're bound to Typhon, no one can distinguish between minotaurs and werewolves except by fangs and horns. And with their transformation into a Typhonian Horde coming in minutes, they were the same horde that the Frosted Stars have faced in Piranha Pit. This horde was still exposed to damage from ink as they were infested with sea slugs and hagfishes that produce their new blood: pitch-black violet ink.
Justinian gets the rest of Sea Angel Splatoon, Theodora and Marcus, on sniping, and Hera on Roller unit. Hera was obliged to go with her custom inkbrush rather than Hebe's Wine Cup and Olympic Queen's sceptre. Yet, she had to use the items more. Justinian has Hera and the rest of Sea Angel Splatoon do this for containment. Justinian is devoted to protect Nebula as she opens a path for the Splatoons to escape the skatepark.
Justinian and Nebula took out their staff and trident, changing into the Olympian forms.
Nebula can't use water powers since there is no water source; yet, she can still perform storms and earthquakes and summon the Hippocampus. As for Justinian, there was some vegetation he can manipulate to his advantage, but limited soil to grow plants that can actually be useful.
Nebula plans out the rescue mission and reaches for her conch shell. She pulls it out and blows on it, calling for the Hippocampus. The half-horse and half-fish herd came to her aid, but the call lured in more than just them.
There are other horses with their hind parts being that of a yellow feathered rooster; And there are other horses with eagle wings and talon-like hooves. These were the Hippalectryon and the Hippogriffs respectively.
Only one horse stood among the others: a pure white horse with angelic wings, adorned in tarnished and damaged gold and silver. This was not Pegasus, but a descendent wearing his ancestor's armor. His name is Hippocrene after the fountain his ancestor created on Mt. Helicon.
The white winged-horse slowly lower his head and offered Nebula a ride on his back.
Nebula walks over and smiles. She pet his head and looks to Justinian. "Let try distracting the hordes. Those minotaurs and werewolves might already know we're here because of the conch shell." She then whispered to Hippocrene. "Would it be fine if the Champion of Persephone and Demeter takes your offer for my sake?"
Hippocrene looks to Nebula, snorts, and nods in agreement.
"Alright!" Justinian walks over to get on Hippocrene's back.
Nebula twirled her trident and started forming a bubble of water. The bubble implodes into droplets, revealing the same silver chariot with black horses in teal scale armor she used when fighting Iapetus and Oceanus off the coast of Inkopolis. She gets on the chariot and waves her trident to signal a stampede.
Nebula was commencing her plan to rescue the Frosted Stars and the Galaxa Gems. Who knows how long the two Splatoons can hold out before they can't keep up with the horde's numbers.
