Read a very long scaremongering post about internet culture and the loss of community and it ended with "do you even know the names of your neighbours?" ...as if that was a big gotcha?

Like yeah I do, on one side is Stuart and Rena who are expecting their second grandchild very soon, and on the other side is Mark and his new missus Tracey and his son Ben (who is moving out soon). We send each other Christmas cards and compliment each other's Christmas and Halloween decorations. We bring each other's bins in.

If you want community with your neighbours you just have to accept that it's going to be a little awkward at first and push through the discomfort to make the barest of efforts.

I was definitely glad we already knew each other on the day I woke up at 7am to realise our gas hob had been leaking overnight and the house was full of gas. Mark next door saw the fire engine pull up, came out to see what was going on, and brought us into his house for a cuppa while we waited for the all clear.

Idk I'm just sick of people acting all doom and gloom about things that they absolutely have the ability to change 🤷🏻‍♀️

unwarranted Cis Opinion but I'm getting really uncomfortable w people responding to bathroom bills by posting pictures of trans men like DO YOU WANT THEM IN WOMEN'S BATHROOMS

bc like. no they're men. they should be in men's bathrooms unless that feels unsafe. but. it really feels like it's not helpful to lean into the idea that seeing someone presenting masc or being read as a man in a women's bathroom means You're In Danger.

like I know several butch women and NB ppl who are really scared around being on T or getting top surgery bc they're not men and they don't want to be in the men's bathroom, and in that circumstance stuff like growing facial hair or reading more androgynously can be really fucking scary when people are being primed by propaganda to be on edge and hyperreactive to anyone who doesn't look like their idea of a Cis Woman.

and I'm not laying that at the feet of the people saying "hey uhhhh trans men are men and don't belong in women's bathrooms" bc it is not their fault. it's the fault of a concerted effort to make it difficult and dangerous to be trans or substantively gender nonconforming in public.

but at the same time idk I guess it just worries me cause sometimes it feels like "you fools! you are worried about this group of trans people bc you think they're the Lurking Danger of Men In Bathrooms? WRONG! the Men Making You Feel Afraid In Bathrooms are actually THESE trans people!" when in fact neither of those groups using the fucking bathroom is a problem. just piss and mind your business. people need to go where they need to go.

(one of) my dream games is a super ultrarealistic city-building game and it's (ideally, though unrealistically) set in america or at least in major american cities.

and i mean extremely ultrarealistic. cities: skylines is like dumb as fuck arcade shit compared to what i want. it may as well be townscaper.

i want it to be detailed enough that it's used by actually irl city planners to simulate their building projects. i wanna be taking soil samples and hydrogeological surveys and flood risk assessments. and i want the regulations and zoning to be really complex and detailed.

and again, i want this to be set around real-life locations. there should be an option for "present day" mode where you start working with the city as it exists today or "historical" mode for some previous period in the city's history or "free play" more where it's just the blank slate terrain and no development.

and of course you gotta manage natural resources and tax revenue and population growth and population happiness and all that.

if you wanna make it ideal-ideal then there should also be a complex political/government angle too.

and ideal-ideal-ideal there should also be an army/military dimension as well. and actually you should be able to play as city, county, state, or federal governments. all simultaneously (although obviously these different governments should also be able to govern themselves automatically so you're not having to micromanage).

#basically some combination of simcity/cities: skylines and victoria and crusader kings and command: modern air/naval operations #and democracy and honestly you should even be able to open up a business or something or even be a part of a construction crew #so include all those business/management sim games too #and it should be all of those games in one simultaneously #sims too #you should be able to just play as an ordinary dude in a city you build #i want to build my irl city and play as me #and i should be able to do that and rise up the ranks until i'm president #and i should be able to nuke other countries or call in the national guard #and there should be like a civil war/natural disaster/zombie apocalypse scenario #so add in zombie games too #i should be able to build a city and then fight zombies in it like dayz #so i guess my ideal game is all games in one lmao #sorry this got way out of hand #i was originally just going to stick with the city-building stuff but more ideas kept coming to me as i wrote it out #but i will say realistically one game i've always wanted to see was some kind of crusader kings/rome:total war fusion #a game where you play as an individual king/politician and rule your city/kingdom (hyperrealistically)#and very grand strategy oriented #but also with the option to fight battles tactically on the ground like the total war series #or even as an individual soldier #there was this one game i played when i was younger that i was kinda like that and i always thought it was ahead of its time #you could fight these battles in a tactical mode or you could play as an individual hero fighting in the thick of things

glad to see absolutely nothing has changed about diabetes diagnoses in ER departments! (<- so sarcastic it could sweeten a coffee)

#when i got diagnosed at 17yo i was in emerg all weekend bc i kept going and they didn't know what to do so i was there for ages #and they'd just keep sending me home with no insulin and being like 'are you diabetic' like my dude that's what im asking you.#anyways. now my roommate is here for the same reason #and i'm here trying to advocate for him and insisting on giving him some fkng insulin #and we just waited in a chair for 4 hours #every single nurse who walked by avoided eye contact deliberately #and when i tried to go up and say hi or excuse me they would say im busy and keep walking #i finally found our original doctor at a computer and she told us the endocrinologist won't be here until 7am #(it's 2am now and we've been here since 9pm)#and absolutely no one told us this!#and there's a nurse here who is so mean and every time i ask if we can have a bed #not demanding. im very politely asking bc no one has told us shit #and she keeps being like there are 130 people here. no we don't have a bed.#like thanks! i was literally just asking #also he's a person not a fucking number #it's so frustrating. Just binge watched sherlock for the first time and something and came across your blog. In your opinion do you think Sherlock has professional combat training, maybe trained as a professional but decided to opt out of doing it? Or did he learn from experience? Him holding his own against Mary's former partner must say something.

What an excellent question!

I think there are two plausible answers here... One is that Sherlock has a history working for whatever government agency Mycroft is supposed to represent, and got his training that way. Now, Sherlock implies on a few occasions that he refuses to work for Mycroft (like in ASIP and TGG), and sometimes they clearly work at cross purposes (like in HLV). But Mycroft does offer him work in HLV (which Sherlock is forced to accept by the end of the episode), and he probably wouldn't be able to do that if Sherlock didn't have some pre-existing relationship with whatever intelligence agency, along with appropriate training.

The other likely possibility is suggested by the original canon. In Doyle's stories, Holmes tells us that he has studied a martial art called Baritsu -- probably a reference to Bartitsu, a wacky but real fighting method drawing together jujitsu, boxing, and cane fighting, among others. If our Sherlock was engaged in something similar, he might be basically self-taught, or perhaps working with private trainers or sparring partners.

Personally, I think the first option is a bit more likely, but the second is more fun. ;)

Anyone else have different headcanons for where Sherlock got his training?

I keep seeing posts here observing that Bram Stoker's original readers would not have been as versed in vampire lore as we moderns are -- vampires would have been a new concept to them, right?

I just want to say, no, not really.

In addition to Carmilla and Polidori's Vampyre, may I introduce into evidence the hugely popular but now largely forgotten Varney the Vampire?

Varney was serialized between 1845-47 as a "penny dreadful" and was basically the Twilight of its day. Even people who didn't read it would have heard about it.

Point being: when Victorian readers read about two pinprick holes in Lucy's throat, they would have known EXACTLY what that meant.
