Y'all don't know HOW BAD the anime threw my friends ass off, you guys.
He's been like: He didn't need to do that, he wasn't held at gunpoint or anything, he wasn't forced, so WHYYYY????
'It doesn't make sense, dude, he just mentioned about killing Dazai, and yet he does this for him???'
My only explanation? Their homosexuality outshines all-

Atsushi: Who is he?
Dazai: A mafioso. Honestly, we only call him that because we don't know anything else about him
Me, rewatching the show with full context this time around:

There’s just something deeply disorienting about seeing Dazai act like a chaotic demigod of mischief 99% of the time, but then suddenly losing all composure the second that poisonous gas began killing the hostages in this week’s episode.
He yelled at Atsushi to stay back in a tone of voice we’d never heard before, then he psychically wrangled Kunikida away from the window, clearly afraid his partner would get himself killed. The gas could have harmed Dazai, too, if Kunikida had interfered, but I don’t think that was the point.
I think we’re just used to seeing Dazai ready for anything. I think we’re used to seeing him fight for the ADA, but not for individual people, and absolutely not in a state of panic or fear. To me, this is one of the first times we get a glimpse of how much Dazai actually cares for these two.

I know I'm late to the bsd rewatch party, but going back to the beginning has given me new insight on something that piqued my interest when I first started the series.
The "everyone with special abilities has something wrong with them inside" line from episode 2:
This idea seemed especially important considering Tanizaki repeats it later in the same episode:
And now that I know that special abilities are manifested from trauma (specifically childhood trauma) this line makes a lot of sense. You literally can't be an ability user unless you've witnessed/experienced some horrific event during your developmental years that stuck with you into adulthood. And so abilities are meant to be reflective of whatever is wrong with that "something" inside of their users: their inner child.
