Once upon a time I didn’t like Paladin Danse, and then one day I rolled Juaco as a character and after growing thoroughly frustrated with the Paladin’s commitment to military professionalism, Juaco decided “welp! I’m in love with him now!”

By proxy I’ve gotten real soft about him these days. Juaco calls this the “Danse Phenomenon”, wherein he makes you want to slap him and smooch him at the same time. (This is a re-post from my long-running tumblr account which I have since retired, so if you’ve seen it twice, that be why!

One of my favorites so far is my oc Tessa!! She’s a Brotherhood of Steel soldier who wants to be a Knight, but is instead stuck fixing up the Prydwen with Ingram (which includes sprucing up sets of power armor). She won’t complain, because she’s happy to help where she can, but she does wish for progress lol

Obviously, before choosing which faction to go with in order to get to The Institute, Mateo joined every single one of them. He needed to know their ideals and motives.

His military background made it easier for him to adapt to Brotherhood of Steel, generally speaking.

He still really benefited from his time there and mainly thanks to Paladin Danse which he still considers a great mentor of his.

Gosh it's been a while since I drew Danse :') feels good.

A Messy List of (Angsty) Danse Headcanons

he has nightmares every single night about cutler to this day

after cutler died he went through a long spell of depression

after he finds out he’s a synth, he becomes totally reliant on sole, and it makes him hate himself

he can’t look at himself in mirrors after blind betrayal

he often thinks about the danse he replaced and feels as though he did him a huge injustice (even though he didn’t actually replace anyone)

he actually had a very hard time killing for the brotherhood at first

he used to get sick after killing synths that looked like humans

he refuses to allow himself to get close to sole because of cutler (pre-bb)

but he ends up falling for them anyway, duh

and it just makes him hate himself more

he doesn’t ever really know what to do with feelings, so they get bottled up. almost an entire life’s worth of emotions come out when sole finds him at the listening post

he gets really bad separation anxiety after bb

and really bad nightmares

it gets harder for him to kill things again after blind betrayal

he spends a lot of time beating himself up for killing so many synths even though he is one

he needs sole to keep him grounded

he tries to deny food/sleep/medical attention for a while after bb because he feels he doesn’t deserve or physically need it. Basically just making himself sick because ‘synths don’t need nutrition to function properly’

if he sees a single brotherhood soldier or scribe while he and sole are exploring he goes into some kind of self distrust meets fight meets flight mode

at first he’ll grab sole’s arm, try and gently lead them away, then it turns into this frantic panic because someone who trusted me is here and I know that as soon as they see me they’ll kill me
