The “Nguzo Saba” or as it translates from Swahili to English as “The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa” is a value system and set of principles which outlines the mission statement and intentions of Kwanzaa. From December 26 to January 1, a different principle is celebrated each day, highlighting African-centered themes and traditions.

Kwanzaa founder Dr. Maulana Karenga describes the principles as “…the core and consciousness of Kwanzaa. They are posed as the matrix and minimum set of values African Americans need to rescue and reconstruct their life in their own image and interest and build and sustain an Afrocentric family, community and culture.”

During Kwanzaa someone will informally ask, “Habari Gani?” or “What's happening?” in Swahili throughout the day. Somone will respond with the principle for the day, which today is “Umoja” which translates into English as “Unity”.

Finding Yvonne is a novel about difficult choices and growing up, perfect for fans of Nicola Yoon and Nina LaCour.

Since she was seven years old, Yvonne has had her trusted violin to keep her company, especially in those lonely days after her mother walked out on their family. But with graduation just around the corner, she is forced face the hard truth that she just might not be good enough to attend a conservatory after high school.

Full of doubt about her future, and increasingly frustrated by her strained relationship with her successful but emotionally closed-off father, Yvonne meets a street musician and fellow violinist who understands her struggle. He's mysterious, charming, and different from Warren, the familiar and reliable boy who has her heart. But when Yvonne becomes unexpectedly pregnant, she has to make the most difficult decision yet about her future.

Ugh, so amazing. We asked Brandy a few questions to give a little more insight on the book...

Give us your elevator pitch of Finding Yvonne.

An eighteen-year-old violinist struggles with the truth about her talent and complicated familial relationships while juggling the attention of two guys who understand her in different ways. (A little more detail: There is a successful and self-medicated father, a missing mother, lots of food, trips to Venice Beach, and a black female friendship that I love.)

What is your writing process? Is there certain music you like to listen to, a favorite place, et cetera?

I think I've finally come to terms with the fact that I don't have a writing process. I don't write every day and I don't outline. I don't listen to music while I write, but I have been into noise-canceling headphones lately (sometimes). Probably the only consistent thing is that I always write at home, and I do so at night, usually getting my best work done between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. I wish I could be one of those people who gets up at the crack of dawn and is done with their work by breakfast, but I am terrible at everything in the morning besides being grumpy.

Do you have a favorite line in Finding Yvonne?

I am pretty fond of the opening: "There are three things I know about my father: He smokes pot daily, he doesn't like to speak unless he really has something to say, and he is one of the most respected chefs in Los Angeles."

What do you think about the cover? What about it speaks out the most to you about your book?

I can't even be coy: It is truly one of the best book covers I've ever seen, hands down. Illustrated and typographic covers (like Little & Lion) are my favorite, and this is perfect. As soon as I saw an early version, it felt very much like my Yvonne: solitary and quiet, but powerful. I love the clean lines, the bright colors that complement her beautiful brown skin, and the strands of her braids. It's all brought together so well by the textured background and detail of her name necklace. It is gorgeous and I'm so proud to have this cover on my book. I am grateful to Erin Robinson (aka BrooklynDolly) for the illustration, Jill De Haan for the lettering, and Marcie Lawrence for the cover design.
