The producer, artistic director, and an educator at The Freedom Theatre in Jenin were kidnapped alongside over 100 other Palestinians today (13 Dec 23). The Freedom Theatre is a hub of cultural resistance and artistic community in the occupied West Bank.

Join me in calling on theatre institutions to demand the immediate release of these kidnapped artists. Here's the email I'm sending; feel free to copy but please adjust the phrasing to avoid spam filters: "Today in Jenin refugee camp, The Freedom Theatre's artistic director Ahmed Tobasi, producer Mustafa Sheta, and acting teacher Jamal Abu Joas were taken hostage by the Israeli army alongside over one hundred other Palestinian civilians. This follows the murder of three Freedom Theatre artists in the last few weeks: Yamen Jarrar (17), Jehad Naghniyeh (26), and Mohammed Matahen (30). The global theatre community must stand up in support of artists persecuted by the occupation regime. There is extensive documentation of torture in Israeli occupation detention centers. I urge [name of organization] to issue a public statement demanding the immediate release of these hostages. i've been in love with wendla since i laid eyes on her and i would die to play her. im obsessed with her, she's got so much more depth than people realize and that was cut during the transition from play to musical fuck you s*ter and i would love to bring that to my rendition of her. and i was also assaulted when i was her age, i was also suicidal, i was also confused af and my mom was not helpful, i also wanted to be loved so badly, i just see a lot of my teenage self in wendla. i related to her so much when i first saw the show and that's a big reason i got so obsessed with it.

prob moritz or hanschen. they are 2 sides of the same dramatic ass coin. they also have daddy issues and are gay like girl me too.

all of them? wendla holds a special place in my heart but like. there is so much to love about all of them even anna and thea who we know almost nothing about have the building blocks of great characters. i've always loved combining what we know about the characters from both the musical and the play to make more complete characters especially because s*ter cut so much of the girls characterization bc he's a sexist pos fuck you and i def do that with anna and thea.

Thoughts about pjsekai second season (if any of this is slightly inaccurate I wrote this in July and haven't really touched it since. Also I never read past Stella. So there's probably a few inconsistencies)

- L/n: Their first arc focuses a lot on them trying to make a name for themselves and trying to go pro. I think a good continuation of that would be to have them actually go like semi-pro or get scouted or smth, and now they have to deal with all the stuff that entails. Such as, that's a lot of work, Saki has her chronic illness to deal with already, they all have jobs, and in a general sense it's a lot to ask of 16 year olds. Going pro is definitely what Shiho wants, and I reckon Saki would be pretty into the idea, if you consider her experiences in hospitali causing her to miss out on so much. And even though it is a main goal for Ichika and Honami I wonder how they would approach it.

- MMJ: Maybe a similar thing to L/n. Haruka, Airi and Shizuku already got fucked over by the industry hence why MMJ freelances. And although they are pretty successful as freelancers, as their popularity grows there would probably be more pressure to actually join with an agency. Tbh I couldn't really think of much for them. Another thing to note is that Shizuku and Airi would now be in their last year of high school, so you have Love Live angst potential. Haruka still has unaddressed issues such as her eating disorder which could be covered.

- VBS: Well we already have whatever drama's going on with Ken's old group. Like with Nagi being MIA and the fact there seems to be some strain between Ken and Taiga bc of this. And this hasn't been developed since Vivid Old Tale. Also just still aiming to surpass Rad Weekend ig. Kohane is currently being trained by Taiga so like there's that. A lot of An's conflict comes from the fact she thinks Kohane will leave to go pro so what happens if that is something that starts being considered? Even though An supports her I still feel there's room for mild angst there. Toya still has some issues with his dad of course. There's also his brothers who I don't think have ever actually shown up, so there's room for those two to show up out of the blue.

- WxS: By far the easiest to try and gauge my predictions for bc it has been foreshadowed. In Mermaids Nene realises that to get where she wants to go she will have to leave WxS. Again in Nene fes 1 we see how she wants to go to broadway. Island Panic again mentions how both Tsukasa and Nene both plan on joining the industry, and (implied) move away. The catch? Rui already struggles with lonliness, and in Mermaids we learn he doesn't want to lose WxS, because he has already achieved his dreams with them (so has Emu). This is particularly relevant as all characters are going to move up a school year, as that would land Rui/Tsukasa in final year, in which Tsukasa would start genuinely considering what he wants to do. Cue Love Live style angst (again). Emu still has her family to deal with as well, although they seem to be getting slightly better.

- Niigo: also has a decent amount of foreshadowing (see Guiding a Lost Child). All of Niigo (cept Mizuki) would now be in 3rd year, so you've already got the conflict with Mafuyu's mum wanting her to apply to med school. Mafuyu bunked off the mock and now her mum thinks she's prioritising music so that's a whole thing. Still no updates on Kanade's dad either, so you could maybe have a plot in which he starts making more progress with his recovery. Ena still has unresolved conflict with her dad, which would probably get worse under the assumption she applies to art school. Oh and Mizuki's arc isn't over either after Footprints.

I stopped coming on here for like almost a month i think bc i added some tags onto a post i reblogged and the op called me out and said i completely misunderstood everything (except they misunderstood what i was trying to say so fuck me ig) and i got upset and dipped. In the meantime, lots of stuff has happened, but also not much.

I went back to university, the semester started last Thursday and it’s going well so far, I’m majoring in Museum Studies bc I am a big nerd, and it’s a 100% online program so I’m still working and I don’t have to like, move to Arizona, which is good.

Work is meh, we’re starting vaccine clinics again soon so I’ll be doing that again with this season’s flu and covid shots, and maybe other vaccines as well I’m not sure what the regulations are now. We still only have one pharmacist on staff so we’re stuck with a rotating cast of floaters, some of whom are more helpful than others. And the customers are still horrible, that hasn’t changed. I got yelled at for 10 minutes today by someone who’s doctor called in over a dozen prescriptions and then faxed us and cancelled all of them so we put them all back, which was a mistake apparently and then after we finally got it sorted and got them called in again, we were supposed to close in 10 minutes so it was physically impossible to fill 15 prescriptions for one person, and she wanted us to stay open late just for her, which legally we can’t do and also no, we want to go home and she was being so rude we didn’t really want to help her at all. So yeah, work is work

In good news, I’ve been talking to someone i matched with on a dating app (my intro that they messaged me about was mcr related, so you know they’re a keeper) and we’ve been on 2 dates and text a lot and we’re planning on hanging out again this Tuesday. They’re a special ed teacher and they have adhd so they get how my brain works and they work with kids whose brains work similarly to both of ours, and they’re really funny and cool and smart and nice and pretty, I really hope this keeps going well bc I really like them.

I watched the newest season of Heartstopper twice in a row after it came out, reread all the comics that are out (Alice Oseman is still publishing them, too, so that’s nice) and then rewatched both seasons in a row. It’s so cute and so good and i can feel the hyperfixation building. I’ve watched it enough that I keep slipping into a british accent when I talk, which is entirely unintentional but not the worst thing. I can also do it on purpose, but i tend to pick up accents from people I hear talk a lot, which is maybe the only fun side effect of masking my whole life

I’ve seen a few really good plays and musicals recently, I know I saw The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window before i stopped posting on here, but that was really good, and then I saw Kimberly Akimbo the other day, it was INCREDIBLE. The music and the writing are amazing, obviously, and the actors were all so good, again obviously. They won 5 Tony’s last season, including for Best Musical and Best Featured Actress in a musical and Best Lead Actress in a musical, which were so well-deserved, I seriously cannot hype this show up enough. There’s so many good shows on Broadway right now and I wish I could see them all, there were a bunch I wanted to see but closed before I got the chance, too, including Prima Facie starring Jody Comer, but I bought the script for that one.

In less fun news, I think i might need to put a read more here bc there be triggers coming

Between my chronic GI issues (trying to see a specialist about it again but there’s a whole mess of problems with that i just don’t feel like typing) and watching season 2 of Heartstopper and also rereading it and seeing Charlie struggling with his eating disorder, I’ve lapsed pretty hard with my own. I can’t really call it a relapse bc I was never really actually trying to recover, but I was trying for a while to eat a little more normally, but that’s basically out the window now. Thanks brain, so helpful of you to see a person struggling with a similar mental illness to mine and say “well they’re sicker than you so you suck and also you need to work harder at being sick like them” like FUCK OFF that’s not helpful and also Charlie is literally a fictional character and most of the storyline is about how he’s trying to get help for his ed and how awful they are, and his ed and mine aren’t the same, nor are our reasons for being disordered. So that’s not been fun.

I also realized (after watching a video by a therapist reacting to the scene when Ben assaults Charlie in Heartstopper and then going and obsessively researching legal definitions) that what happened to me in the summer of 2019 would probably be classified as a rape, not just a sexual assault. Which it also was, but what happened falls under the legal definition of rape, not just assault. So I’ve been spiraling about that, even though I still remember almost none of it and once again my garbage brain has decided that I’m somehow not allowed to be that upset or say I’m traumatized bc I don’t experience two of the most common symptoms of ptsd (flashbacks and nightmares) so clearly, this is all me being dramatic, even though basically everything else fits. And those aren’t required to be diagnosed with ptsd. Not that I WANT ptsd, but for whatever reason I feel like i’m not allowed to even say i’m a little bit traumatized by what happened bc of that. Again, stupid brain. I also realized after talking to the person I’ve been talking to (idk if we’re officially dating, maybe i should ask) about boundaries and what we’re both comfortable with, that the last person who I’ve had any “romantic” physical contact with was the person who raped me, and also the only sexual contact I’ve ever had (unless i’ve blocked out more than just the one assault I know happened) was with that same person, so now i’m extremely anxious about doing anything with the person i’m sort of maybe dating, even though neither of us are interested in just jumping right to physical intimacy, they’ve also experienced similar situations so they’re anxious about it too, and also they’re a nice person who i’d trust to not push it if i wasn’t comfortable with something, but idk how to say “i’m anxious about kissing you even though i like you and i want to kiss you bc the last person i kissed was the person who raped me over 4 years ago”

I’m working on finding a new therapist now that i’m done with my IOP and i know that’s going to be one of the (far too many) things i need to deal with in therapy, as well as all the other trauma from that summer, and from my previous university experience, and my whole fucking childhood, and also my other issues that aren’t necessarily trauma related, although most of them probably are to a certain extent bc being an undiagnosed audhd person who also doesn’t realize they’re trans until they’re an adult is inherently traumatic.

I don’t know if there’s any other big stuff I want to/feel like I need to say that’s been going on, not that anybody will probably read all or any of this. But yeah, a lot is going on, but also not much is actively going on. This was a lot longer than I thought it would be. Oops.

Please. Margo comes from money and spent more time on vacation than she did working when she dated Seb. Just because she’s an immigrant doesn’t mean she is poor and has a work ethic. People forget she did CA multiple times. Posted herself wearing Native America headdress in IG and laughed at people who called her out for it /// Well, first of all, it was a pic of her in a headdress, which is bad, but it was literally just her wearing it, no party, no full face paint, no offensive captions full of slurs. It’s still CA and still bad but just never on the level of Alejandra. I legit don’t remember her laughing at people or even people calling her out for it. They did however called her out for wearing a fur hat, which she was adamant to keep. And what you say did CA multiple times? When was that? Native headdress is one. That’s it. Her work ethic... yep, she wasn’t anywhere near the level of the workaholic Seb, despite that however she worked a lot. First of all, during her rs with Seb (in a span of 2 years), she did multiple acting workshops, which your precious AW is so above, she filmed 2 tv shows, at least 4 movies 2 of which ended up at Sundance. Already more than AW did in the last 2 years. She filmed 2 shorts for which she got some awards as the best actress and filmed a music video for a suicide awareness. Did AW ever do that? Did AW ever get any awards for her acting? Genuinely asking btw. Anyway, Margo ended up getting her role in The Deuce while still with Seb and he helped her film her audition tape after which she immediately cut their trip to London short to go back to in person audition. Just a few months after their breakup, she did an off broadway performance, ended up getting another longer off broadway play, filmed another movie, got some festival notices, got a part in a charity HBO monologue project, got her own TV show on Netflix in which she was THE LEAD in and the shoot was almost 6 months long, got another co-lead in a mini-series, filmed that, had 2 photoshoots, had multiple auditions, went back to London and did the promo for the mini series and now got 2 roles in 2 big franchises, one of which she’s currently filming in England. That to me sounds like WAY more than what AW did in the past year or 5. Margo’s vacations weren’t even so slumped together the way it always is with Alejandra who works for 3 days and then immediately goes to spa and vacations. I can recall just 2 proper vacations she’s had while in a rs with Seb (Mexico and Italy for his bday) all of which happened in 2014 and 2015. She started going on vacations more after their break up. I remember the issue with her being not working as much as he was, not even going some place. She was also actively involved in the charity in which SHE did something rather than asking people to do something. She read to the elderly every other month and visited children charities and actually spent time with them teaching them acting and dancing stuff. When was the last time AW did something like that? Oh yeah, she was at the donation location of Pine’s supported charity in 2020. Good for her. I’d ask whether she’d be there without him but I think we all know the answer.

Harrison is the type of parent you go to for comfort and hugs even if it might feel like he’s smothering you

Piers is the one who lets you come to him when you’re ready to talk about it, no pressure

Harry went to a high school that focused on technology so he’s all into the latest gadgets

This is a secret but he only got a apple watch to feel like a true spy

His intelligence got him somewhere with a few ladies ;)

Just to put my last thoughts on the broadway usher thing, but I don't know, the last answers really makes everything seems even more off. I mean, at first she left that answer about not everyone being nice ambiguous on purpose (and she knew that people sending her questions were Tom's fans), and then backtracked explaining it was her boss. She also said that Betrayal was an awful experience for her that she was happy to forget... but at the same time she sets up an entire day of asks about it?

And sorry, I don't want to mock her passion, but I saw these pics and the not-Betrayal related ones she posts on her account, and no one of them says "aspiring photographer", but more "sneaky pics that were not supposed to be taken"

Again, not everyone has to like him, but the whole thing seems... odd

I am so sorry for the late reply. I was so swamped with work this last week....I only reblogged a few things on my phone, but I hate replying to asks on my phone.

I think it's a bit of a love-hate thing with her, and it's not the first time that I've seen this.

She wants attention and traffic for her account. And as much as Betrayal was maybe a not-so-good experience for her professionally, due to things that had nothing to do with the play of company/cast, she will have noticed that her posts about Betrayal get the most engagement.

So, I'm sure she loves all the traffic and engagements her Betrayal posts get, but at the same time she resents Betrayal because 1. for personal reasons and 2. because these are the only posts on her account that get this much traffic and engagements.

And I can totally understand that she would not want to air any dirty laundry re. her boss on her IG account, but she totally should have not worded her posts so ambiguous. And to then be pissed when she gets lots of questions about what supposedly happened with Tom is a bit silly. She could and should have known.

I don't know what exactly happened with her and Tom. Maybe the issue is that nothing happened. I don't mean in the sense that she was hoping for something more, but I guess she simply didn't have as much contact with him as she would have liked, even though she knows that front-of-house and company/backstage staff are not the same, and said as much herself. So what did she expect? I'm sure Tom was pleasant, appreciative and polite whenever he had contact with front-of-house staff, but I guess he didn't specifically seek them out. She says that he kept to himself, and that wouldn't surprise me. I think he stays pretty focused when he is working.

So I don't quite know what to make of her posts. It's like she cannot make up her mind, she sure likes the notoriety her involvement with the show has brought her, which is why she keeps talking about it, but she also resents having to keep talking about it (which she doesn't, but whatever).

As for her other photos, I have to say that I don't care about them and haven't even looked at them (which of course makes me part of the problem hahaha). Her Betrayal pics/videos are sure great, you can tell that they were all taken sneakily and some of them hastily, which maybe gives you a clue as to what her problems with her boss may have been. And her issue with "the rule" seems to be that ushers like her weren't allowed to hang around in their favourite spot anymore (I wonder why...).

At the end of the day, she is like lots of other people that like to surf on the coattails of Tom's popularity, but also resent that they have to surf on the coattails of Tom's popularity to get attention for the own stuff.

Kinda like BAFTA that like to invite Tom as presenter to every ceremony and make him ambassodor, but it's crickets when it comes to actually giving him an award.......or Sam Hodges who sure liked all the attention that his Nuffield Theatre in Southhampton got due to doing a Q&A with Tom, and all the memberships and tickets sold, but then treated the fans that attended his talk like a nuisance.

samuel mattew oliver was born to two extremely loving parents jeremy and elizabeth marie oliver, arguably one of the most influential celebrity couples known to man, at least that’s what it felt like growing up in the household, everyone was talking about the oliver’s and when they weren’t...well that never happened

as a middle child, preceded by his older brother mason, and succeeded by his younger sister cassandra, naturally he was born with a crave for validation, anything that separated him for his siblings

but naturally in his need to be different he found his closest allies, more so mason than cassie, but eventually she grew on him, and was most certainly not forced upon the dynamic duo of brother by their parents, but believe me he grew to adore her!

but by no means was he stupid! he wouldn’t allow anyone to take advantage of him and had an unusual talent for knowing when people only wanted to use his friendship as some sort of gain for himself, and extended this talent to his sister cass, because boy oh boy did she need it

their dad who i forgot to mention was a professor at juiliard, his alma matter, caused a constant bouncing back and forth between their coastal home in new jersey and their urban townhouse in new york

both places felt like home to the trio! they made so many good memories, however matty was extremely preferential to the coast, and to this day maintains a beach boy vibe, swears everything is just better by the beach

going back to his upbringing for a minute high school rolled around for him and mason and he just became even more extremely protective of cassie, he went through things extremely unknown to his family

on the outside he was the model person and student, honor roll, a long glowing list of extracurriculars including sports, even holding down a normal job like everyone else at his high school, and not a single blemish in his criminal record, the squeaky clean olivers remained squeaky cleans

HOWEVER there was some shady stuff going on behind the scenes my guy, nothing too terrible, just the usual teenager with loving parents who raise a troubled teen, not because of any past trauma but a need to feel seen

CAR ACCIDENT TW & ALCOHOL TW & DEATH TW one day he’s vibing, it’s the summer they’re celebrating another school year complete, and by the end of the night nearly black out drunk at this point, he knows he can’t go home so he decides to get a ride home with a buddy he worked with, tell his parents that said buddy took him home after work, they worked on homework and fell asleep. and honestly had he had a little less to drink, he would’ve realized that his friend was just as drunk as he was, but they drove anyways. this lead to a drunken car accident, that ended in the death of a pedestrian. thankfully his friend’s dad was a lawyer, and they covered that shit up immediately.

after this whole ordeal choose an accelerated course of study to pursue his acting career, finally something people would talk about that would be solely his, like not really, but let him have his moment alright, he was desperate

lowkey feels guilty about being a hypocrite towards cassie because he’s telling her not to do any of the thing

ADDICTION TW he almost kicked his habit but getting back into acting and the guilt of having blood on his hands, was too much for matty, and he developed a drug / alcohol dependency, which he recognized was extremely harmful! he went to rehab! and has been very vocal about his struggle with addiction ever since

had an on set romance with a costar that crashed and burned, quite publicly, and was just not good for his mental health one bit! def didn’t help with his constantly teetering sobriety but he managed to get through it with the help of his family and his friends

acting wise he’s starred in a bunch of movies but his baby is the netflix show that he’s been working on, i would like to think it’s kind of a sitcom esque show mixed with the same comedic timing of the office, parks n rec, those kinda self-aware humor vibes

ADDICTION TW he plays one of the main character, and his dipped his toes into directing and writing a couple of episodes, the show truly gives me one day at a time vibes, just brings light to mental health, addiction, important issues you don’t normally see portrayed on tv, and he def plays schneider, the bumbling rich boy who does and says what he’s told, struggles with addiction, has a super childish nature, and just a hint of self-awareness but just a hint as a little treat

this is so ooc but i’m realizing he’s quite literally schneider from one day at a time

MENTAL HEALTH TW & ANXIETY TW has receded from that cool kid persona he once held back in what i refer to as his ‘glory days’ and is now extremely vulnerable to everything and everyone, will literally cry if you even look at him the wrong way. struggles with really bad anxiety, among other mental health issues (which is why his netflix show and he advocate so heavily for mental health!) but is quite literally one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, softness runs in the oliver family ig.

IS LITERALLY SO CHILDISH....where was once extremely mature for his age....he now copes with his trauma by just acting like a toddler, literally mixes chocolate milk IN HIS MOUTH like a heathen, but that still doesn’t stop him from being fiercely protective of cassie, and will fight anyone for her

Growing up from a Disney icon to a gun-wielding heroine, American actress Vanessa Hudgens has come a long way since her ‘High School Musical’ days, Ahead of her upcoming Netflix film ‘Tick, Tick ... Boom’ and current action comedy ‘Bad Boys for Life’, the former teen star gets down to business, revealing her stance on feminism, growing up in Hollywood - and how she’s dealing with that social media controversy.

What a difference a day makes. In early March, American actress and singer Vanessa Hudgens posted a selfie of herself dressed in a risqué metallic Saint Laurent bustier, paired with barely-there hot pants, big curls, and red haute lips. With a caption that read “That good good. No it’s not Thursday”, one can only assume that she was referring to her weekly #ThirstyThursdays feel-good posts, a series of stylishly curated body-positive pin-ups that had become her personal “revenge-bod” indulgence since her high-profile break-up with actor, Austin Butler. It certainly didn’t take long for the picture to attract more than a million likes, breaking the Internet with hundred of web articles from the likes of E! Online to The Daily Mail. “Thank you for blessing us with this”, commented Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actress Kiernan Shipka, while Pretty Little Liars actress Ashley Benson declared her love for her fellow Spring Breakers co-star. Little did anyone realise, that the selfie was in fact a behind-the-scene outtake from this exclusive Harper’s BAZAAR Malaysia cover shoot in sunny Los Angeles, shot on location amid lush palm trees and clear blue skies. It was indeed a much simpler time then: malls were packed with countless shoppers, yoga centres were running at full capacity, and rush hour traffic in major cities would last for hours on end. But in a blink of an eye, the world changes overnight, and nothing else was ever the same.

Suddenly, social distancing and self-isolation became the new norm, and in a matter of days, we started to question our own health, safety and sanity. Oddly enough, this conscious approach juxtaposed the resulting series of TikTok dance videos and Insta Live workouts as millions of subscribers were given carte blanche to become their own Insta celebrities.

For Vanessa, this translated into an IG LIve video which saw the Disney actress voice her opinions on the worldwide pandemic, culminating in a social media frenzy which incited many to lash against The Princess Switch star. Of course, just as soon as she had realised her mistake, Vanessa released a statement on Twitter, apologising for her misstep of judgement. “I’m so sorry for the way I have offended anyone and everyone who has seen the clip from my Instagram Live yesterday” she confessed. “I realise my words were insensitive and not at all appropriate for the situation our country and the world are in right now”.

“I think it’s important to remember that no one’s perfect” Vanessa responded in our interview, barely days after her bold comment on the ‘gram. “All we can do is learn from our mistakes ... so I keep charging on”. A testament to her unrelentless spirit, one which she had undoubtedly molded since her High School Musical era.

Indeed, the half-American and half-Filipina actress was 17 when she was casted as Gabriella Montez in the now-iconic Disney film. Within a year, her music recordings for the movie’s soundtrack went on to dominate the charts internationally, with “Breaking Free” a duet with former on-screen/off-screen love interest Zac Efron, hitting #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #9 in the United Kingdom. Through the years, the multi-talented actress released a number of solo albums, from V in 2006 and Identified in 2008, while also being inducted into Forbes’s “High Earners Under 30″ list in 2008.

It isn’t just chick flicks and family specials that propelled her into superstardom. There’s another part of Vanessa that’s altogether badass and empowering, which shone through the less commercial yet thought-provoking projects, like the cult coming-of-age drama Thirteen by Catherine Hardwicke, and of course, Harmony Korine’s 2012 Spring Breakers, starring James Franco and Selena Gomez. Here, her seamless ability to go from fresh-faced-girl-next-door, to a gun-wielding temptress stood out the most. Naturally, this chameleonic prowess to switch from one polarised character to another, has certainly helped in paving the way for her latest endeavour in Broadway and latest film Bad Boys for Life, let alone her rise as not just a feminist symbol, but as a role model to young girls everywhere.

Surely, in a post #MeToo world and today’s current state of panic, sisterhood, compassion and humanity are needed, now more than ever. And with celebrity culture being blown out of proportion, perhaps, it is a time to reflect, and be present. After all, to quote Vanessa’s 2006 High School Musical hit, “We’re All In This Together”.

You’ve come a long way since High School Musical. How do you think that experience and growing up with fame, has shaped you personally and professionally?

It’s made me stronger. Growing up in the spotlight is difficult. But going through things publicly gave me thick skin. The industry is tough and I’m grateful for my strength

Since then, some of the films you’ve starred in, like Spring Breakers and Thirteen, highlight some controversial issues facing women today. How do you think such films reflect back on our current state of society at large?

It’s important to see films where things are taken too far and observe how it plays out. It’s really crucial to be faced with the question “Where do I stand on that?”. That’s how you build your own character and understanding about yourself.

How much of these kick-ass slash empowering narratives appeal to you as an actress, especially now that you’ve taken the role of a cop in Bad Boys for Life?

I’ve always dreamt of being a badass action babe. I remember seeing Angelina Jolie in Tomb Rider and thinking to myself, “I want to do that”. It’s important for girls to see woman kicking ass and being empowered.

What was it like working with iconic actors like Will Smith and Martin Lawrence?

It’s so fun being on a set when there is already such an established relationship between the main cast. Will and Martin are both are such kind individuals and they’re so collaborative. Will always made sure everyone was looked after and having a good time.

Has it been hard transitioning from a Disney icon, to a badass female actress?

The beginning was the toughest time, because all people knew of me was from High School Musical. I really had to put in the work to expand my résumé and be seen in a different light. But I enjoy the process. I’m playing all different types of characters and constantly challenging myself to take on something new.

In February, the photographer Claire Rothstein released a video featuring yourself and other prolific women on female empowerment. What is your take on feminism?

To me it’s about seeing yourself as someone you respect and being treated that way. There’s so many different opinions about how a woman should be, and I think the only opinion that matters is your own. There’s still so much work to do when it comes to equality and equal pay, but the conversation is loud and I think with continuing in that direction we will make a difference!

As a proud half-American half-Filipina, how much of your multicultural background informs the person you are today?

I’m sad to say I still haven’t been to the Philippines and I feel like a piece of me is missing because I’m not as connected to my heritage as I’d like. But I am very much my mother’s child and she was born and raised in the Philippines with not a lot to her name. Hearing her struggles and her instilling her faith and spirit into me are my grounding pillars. But I was born in the States and raised as an American. It’s nice to have a piece of both.

If you were to choose between acting and singing, which one would it be?

That’s so hard for me. I grew up doing musical theatre so to me they go hand-in-hand but if I HAD to choose I’d say acting. Telling stories and stepping into someone else’s shoes are my real passion.

Going into Broadway - which seems to be the right juggle between the two - how do you mentally prepare yourself with such feats?

Being on stage is like being at home to me. You do all the preparation in a safe space and then finally have that moment where you tell the story and have the audience right there to react to it. You can feel if they are into it or not. It’s such an intimate special connection you have with the audience when you’re on stage. I get such a thrill from it.

With so much going right now, how do you take the time to just #SelfLive?

I’ve been meditating a bit more recently. I think with all the noise it’s so important to take time to drop in to yourself and release all the baggage we carry. I’m also such a fan of a good face mask, a glass of wine, and watching a comedy in bed. Also, a good meal. Taking time with it and really experiencing all your senses with each bite.

Without a doubt, it’s been quite an emotional roller coaster for you these past few years. How do you keep yourself motivated after all that has happened?

I think it’s important to remember no one’s perfect. We all make mistakes and probably will keep making mistakes. All we can do is learn from them and try not to make the same mistake twice. I’m so passionate about what I do and living my best life because we only have one. I don’t want to look back and say what if, so I keep charging on.

One of the greatest things about you is your ability to keep it real. How do you manage to do that, especially in Hollywood?

I try to make it a point to actively keep my life real. I’ve been through a lot but still have so much life to live. I always try to take a step back and see the journey and feel deep gratitude for it. I think when you lead with gratitude it’s hard to become jaded.

Speaking of keeping it real, what’s your take on being sexy and confident in this day and age?

For me, when I feel confident and empowered by my femininity I feel like I can conquer whatever I set my mind to. There’s power in that. If you believe it, you can do it.
