Gotta say nothing shows the level of americanisation of media/internet than with this eclipse. Last year state in Australia (Western Australia) had complete totality of an eclipse in a dinky little town up north. It was inundated with tourists from around Australia and the world - we even had NASA scientists fly in for study.

I'm based in the only city of our hugeass state (Perth) and while we didn't get totality it was probably the most significant eclipse I've seen in recent memory. It was present in shadows, and there was a significant temperature drop during the experience.

Internationally? News probably didn't make a blip.

Meanwhile I'm sitting in my office overhearing the BBC on the tv (so british news) talking about an American solar eclipse like it's more significant? 🤷‍♀️

Anyway here's some of my pics of our eclipse last year: we had 72% coverage where I was, managed to catch some of the crescent shadows beneath our paperbark tree (I thank tumblr for bestowing this knowledge years ago).

They've officially announced the next season lineup for the orchestra I sing with and it looks pretty excellent. Concerts I'll be in are the Mozart Requiem in November, Beethoven 9 in March 2025, and Peer Gynt in May 2025--the last is apparently a fully-staged version adapted by the former music director of Shakespeare's Globe, although I am not sure what that will look like in the space in which it will be performed! Fun times in any event.

A couple of other things that made me happy:

I am gradually collecting singers who appeared in the weird Claus Guth Don Giovanni, apparently, as Ben Bliss will be the tenor soloist in the Mozart Requiem. (As longtime readers know, seeing as how I never, ever shut up about it, I sang in La Damnation de Faust last spring with John Relyea, and this very weekend I will be singing in Carmina Burana with Ying Fang)

Next season is opening with the Symphonie Fantastique! Very pleased with that (also, the first half of that concert includes the Hungarian March from Damnation de Faust because that piece just slaps so hard)

My sweet Midwestern cinnamon bun Michael Spyres is coming back next season as well ❤️ Alas, it is not a concert I am in (it's just him and the orchestra) but it includes Mahler and Britten, both of whom I also love.

it's crazy how much you don't realize you know about something until you start talking about it to someone who knows nothing (<- just watched the eras tour movie and then spent an hour and a half infodumping to my parents over dinner about taylor swift and concert logistics)

There could be a New Year's Eve party in Munich this year like never before: The Rammstein band wants to give a concert on the Theresienwiese for 145,000 spectators on the last evening of the year. The city has recently received an inquiry from the musicians, who have also been playing internationally in the top league of the industry for decades. According to information from the SZ, another location in Germany is said to be in the running: the Zollverein in Essen, a former colliery site in the Ruhr area.

"Munich would be the first choice," said economics officer Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU), who is also responsible for tourism in the city. A concert with a crowd puller like Rammstein would be "a wonderful opportunity" for the people of Munich and also for many visitors from outside who he would expect to attend such an event, he said. He doesn't think it's a major problem that the Winter Tollwood was being held on the Theresienwiese in the weeks before. The space potential there is shown every year at the Oktoberfest. The area is large enough to allow both events to take place. "There would even be a lot of interaction possible," said Baumgärtner. Both events could potentially benefit from each other.

Rammstein concerts are characterized by the fact that very hard music can be heard very loudly in the arena and beyond. In his tourism strategy, the business consultant focuses on positioning Munich as a top international event and concert location. This is one of the reasons why Robbie Williams, Helene Fischer and Andreas Gabalier will appear in Riem in the coming days . A Rammstein concert in the city center would also cause an international sensation, he is convinced of that. Rammstein has a worldwide fan base like no other German band.
