In 1961, April Ashley was enjoying a successful career as a high-fashion model, having just appeared in British Vogue, when she was forcibly outed as transgender by a tabloid. Immediately, all the work she had been getting dried up.
Tumblr media
April managed to pull herself along by marrying the son of a baron in Gibraltar, giving her the social status to live the life of a socialite. The marriage quickly fell apart, and April tried to enforce her right to an inheritance. The challenge led to a long, drawn-out court case to determine her gender. The court legally declared she was male, and set a precedent for trans discrimination that would stand for decades.
Tumblr media
Following the decision, Ashley left Britain to live a quiet life away from the headlines.
In 2005, she returned to a very different Britain. The Gender Recognition Act of 2004 meant that she could have her birth certificate amended to have her gender listed as "female." She became an activist and a celebrity. In 2012, she was awarded with an Order of the British Empire for "services to Transgender Equality."

I often see people depict Elias as the snobby, prim rich boy between Elias and Peter and here’s my argument for the opposite: Peter canonically talks about being an aristocrat and scion of a powerful household, casually mentions dropping unfathomable amounts of money on personal projects, acts like a spoilt child when he doesn’t get his way, spends all his time on his yacht ship chilling in his cabin and having meals delivered to him, insults Jon by calling him ‘grubby Jesus’ which is just so fucking snobby oh my god, has a family that clearly values appearances, and then there’s his ritual. God, his ritual. I mean:
“I still remember seeing the headline, there in black and white: “The Loneliest Building in Britain.” Trouble is, everyone I picked was white middle-class, so people actually cared, falling over themselves to declare it “emblematic of the problems of the modern world.”
He’s such critical levels of snobby rich boy that his ritual failed specifically because he’s so short-sighted about privilege (he also, like an arrogant little rich boy, insisted on picking people himself despite being surrounded by more qualified people, because of course he did).
Elias, meanwhile, is like a 200 years old man who is referred to as a ‘waste of a suit’, loves paperwork, wears the same haircuts for so long that other people notice how old fashioned they are, and is happy to let his vessels reach middle age and older. He’s an old man who likes paperwork and was able to pretend to be a well-meaning, but somewhat incompetent boss for years. Like, this guy isn’t the snobby rich boy between them; he actively uses Peter’s snobby rich boy status to benefit himself.

The great majority of people support gender affirming care for teenagers
Tumblr media
The new  30-Country Ipsos Global Advisor Survey shows that in most countries people support transgender health care for youth.
60 percent agree that “with parental consent, transgender teenagers should be allowed to receive gender-affirming care (e.g., counseling and hormone replacement treatment”. 27 percent disagree.
Tumblr media
Figure: Views on Teens’ Access to Gender-Affirming Care By Country.
Globally, 67 percent say that trans people face at least a fair amount of discrimination, compared with 19 percent who say they face little or no discrimination. Perceptions of discrimination are highest in Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries, and lowest in Switzerland, Germany, and Japan.
Majorities in each of the 30 countries surveyed (76 percent on average) agree that transgender people should be protected from discrimination in employment, housing, and access to businesses such as restaurants and stores.
it is interesting to note that when the British newspaper The Guardian presented the figure above, the headline was “Less than half in Britain back gender-affirming care for trans teenagers”. Britain has indeed become a a haven for transphobes, but the truth is that more Brits support health care for trans youth (47 percent)  than opposes it (35 percent).
Here are some other key findings:
The average share of the LGBT+ population averages nets to 9 percent. Brazil is at the top with 15 percent. 18 percent of Gen Z identifies as LGBT+.
LGBT+ visibility is up, but still differs widely across countries
Majorities support same-sex marriage and parenting in most, but not all
Support for protection from job and housing discrimination is broader than for other measures for transgender people countries
3 percent identify as some shade of trans (including non-binary/gender non-conforming/gender-fluid. 6 percent of Swiss people belong to this category. 6 percent of Gen Z belongs to this category.

'I Won't Stop Until Israel Admits Its Ties With the Pinochet Regime'
Lily Traubman, who immigrated to Israel in the 1970s, hopes the documents she is trying to get from the Defense Ministry and the Foreign Ministry may even contain information on her father's killers.
A year ago there were headlines when four women filed a suit for sexual abuse they suffered in prison during the Pinochet period. They demanded that the abuse be recognized as a political crime and that their torturers be brought to trial. Were such attacks something that was directed from above?
Of course. Have you heard of “La Venda Sexy”? It was a detention center where people were tortured. The name actually means “Sexy Blindfold,” because the detainees’ eyes were covered the whole time and they were subjected to sexual abuse.
All the detainees were blindfolded the whole time?
Yes. They were arrested, blindfolded and put into a room, together, with their eyes covered. Then they were tortured. Most of the female detainees were raped and underwent sexual abuse. A girlfriend of mine was held there but was not raped. She told me she’d felt fortunate, but then came New Year’s and she was raped. They’d kept her for the holiday.
Venda Sexy was truly awful. They had dogs that were trained to rape women, and they would force spouses and family members to watch the rape. More and more testimonies about these abuses come out all the time.
And throughout this whole period, Israel, under prime ministers Yitzhak Rabin, Menachem Begin and Shimon Peres, maintained excellent relations with Chile. The two countries supported each other in the United Nations and signed bilateral agreements. Army Chief of Staff Mordechai Gur visited Chile in 1978, as did Deputy Prime Minister David Levy in 1982. Both met with Pinochet.
Pinochet was even invited to the synagogue in Santiago on Yom Kippur. Other presidents were not invited.
The documents declassified by the Americans also contain references to arms deals with Israel. Secretary of State George Shultz noted in a 1984 document that Britain, France, Israel and Germany were Chile’s arms suppliers.
All the weapons of the Chilean police and army were Israeli. In Chile I went around with a photograph of my brother in uniform. At checkpoints and in searches I would take out the picture and tell them that this was my brother, who was an officer in the IDF – even though he was a regular soldier – and that did the trick. The Chilean army greatly admired the Israeli army. When Pinochet wanted to visit Israel, he threatened that if he were not received here he would cancel a large arms deal. No dictator in the world, however bad he may be, can exist without international support. The dictatorship in Chile lasted as long as it did because there were countries that supported it, and Israel was one of them.
Israel describes itself as “the state of the Jewish people,” but there are about 20 missing Jews in Chile who were murdered during that period, while Israeli governments and the military maintained close ties with Chile, accorded it legitimization in international forums and provided aid and training to its military and intelligence units.

According to research by the Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT), the UK has licensed more than £472 million in arms exports to Israel since 2015. This includes tank components, armour-piercing ammunition and small arms, but, in keeping with the structure of the British weapons industry, aerospace components for fighters and drones predominate. It’s difficult to get clear numbers from the arms industry. The headline figure is taken from the value of standard licences, but the UK also operates a system of open licences that permit transfers of unlimited – and unspecified – quantities of particular military goods. Since 2015, 57 such licences have been granted for export to Israel, ten of those in 2022. They include British components for the American-designed F-35 aircraft, which campaigners estimate have been worth £336 million to the companies (primarily BAE Systems) producing them. Because the quantities of goods issued under open licences are not made public, groups such as CAAT have to back-engineer their value. In recent years the government has become increasingly hostile to Freedom of Information requests on arms, but there is enough publicly available data to be certain that the planes currently flattening apartment blocks and refugee camps in Gaza rely on components engineered and manufactured in Britain. There is little appetite in Westminster for reform of the domestic arms industry. For one thing, it is a rare economic success story. The UK is the second largest exporter of defence items in the world and, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Initiative, the sixth largest exporter of major conventional weapons (which means everything short of weapons of mass destruction), primarily aircraft. The total value of standard licences issued in 2021 was £10.7 billion, and the industry depends on its aerospace sector, which accounts for 72 per cent of export business. More than half of all British defence exports go to the Middle East – but to Saudi Arabia rather than Israel. Human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, accuse BAE Systems of being party to Saudi war crimes in Yemen, where BAE-supplied (and serviced) fighters have bombed schools and hospitals.

So this news from 29 May 2022 about how, to prepare land for the lucrative bird-hunting season in the UK, wealthy hunting/shooting estate owners burn peat bogs and peatlands, imperiling biodiversity and integrity of these native ecosystems.
This also brings to mind other dangerous effects of the hunting season, since the UK releases tens of millions of non-native birds every year on these estates for sport hunting.
Nearby Ireland has also lost 99% of its native peatlands and bogs (not due to hunting season, but due to the use of peat as an energy source in the recent past).
And even though these environmental advocates and media people are using the term “rainforest” in this article in order to invoke how peatlands sequester carbon on a scale comparable to rainforests, it’s worth pointing out that, coincidentally, both Ireland and England/Great Britain were in the recent past once home to actual rainforest, the globally-rare unique ecosystem that is temperate rainforest. 80% of Ireland used to be home to native forests/trees; now, only 1% of Ireland is covered by native trees. In England, rainforest seems to be prevented from regenerating by development, private estates, and sheep grazing. But small pockets of what you might call rainforest still exist in the British Isles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Headline, images, captions, and screenshots of text from: Justin Rowlatt. “Peat soil fires: Campaigners say England’s ‘rainforests’ illegally burned.” BBC News. 29 May 2022.
Also brings to mind the downfall of Irish peatlands. Since the historic industrial use of peat as a major fuel/energy source, peatlands now cover only 1% of the land in Ireland that they used to occupy.
Meanwhile 80% of Ireland used to be covered by native forests, but now native trees cover only 1% of Ireland (meaning that “green” Ireland now has potentially the lowest native forest coverage of any European nation).
You can read about Ireland’s peat and rainforest here: Chris Baraniuk. “What would a truly wild Ireland look like?” Future Planet -- BBC News.11 February 2021.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And England itself also used to be the home of actual rainforest.
Here: Guy Shrubsole. “Life finds a way: in search of England’s lost, forgotten rainforests.” The Guardian. 29 April 2021.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And those hunting estates in the UK?
Tumblr media
Here’s something from: Nicholas Milton. “Game birds ‘could wipe out adders in most of Britain within 12 years.’“ The Guardian. 1 October 2020.
By 2020, it has been estimated that the UK releases approximately 47 million non-native pheasants and 10 million partridges across these estates each year for the purpose of hunting.
Millions of non-native birds are released every year.
