Friday and Saturday saw the legendary Boston Pops appear at Boston's Symphony Hall to perform the score to Return of the Jedi while the film played, a perfect way for fans to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Episode VI with hundreds of fellow fans, and also a unique gateway to bring new people to the saga and to live orchestral performances. "There would be millions upon millions of people who had never heard great orchestral music played by a great orchestra, if it wasn't for the soundtracks of John Williams' movies," said conductor Keith Lockhart. He said the Friday and Saturday night performances could be a gateway of sorts, to bring new people to Symphony Hall. Cellist Will Chow, in his first season with the Pops, said the way Williams composes, with a musical theme for each character, enhances the experience. He said it brings "another dimension to the movie that I think will be highlighted here on stage. Because you'll get to see the whole orchestra, you'll get to hear the music. Usually I just ignore the 4th of July but my roommate helped me out of the house this year and we found some amazing neighborhood shows!! I have my issues with my country but tonight reminded me what I love about it; neighbors banding together in song and dance in the street - whole neighborhoods coming together to celebrate the towns that they have built and the lives that they have made and the community that they love. 🎶 The song reveal from yesterday’s record playing post is called Village Swallows Waltz by Josef Strauss from this 1956 Boston Pops Picnic record. 🧺 In the 1950s, it was recommended not only to tote along good food and drink on your outdoor eating adventures but also a portable record player so that you could really set a scene! I love that! 🎶 Also the cover art on this record is just gorgeous. 📸 The photograph was taken by Mitchell Bliss (great name!) who I hoped would be a well documented photographer of midcentury life, but sadly there’s not much info on him. Another candidate for the vintage sleuthing pile! Last week, I found another Saturday Night Fever soundtrack cover parody—Saturday Night Fiedler, a 1978 album of disco-styled classical music by the Boston Pops, conducted by Arthur Fiedler. It’s pretty good! Others in my mini collection include a Sesame Street album and an album of Hasidic disco that I can’t stand but think the cover is a riot.
