Festung Kufstein

La història de la fortalesa de Kufstein, al Tirol austríac, és sovint vinculada als colors de les banderes dels estats medievals i moderns que la van posseir, des dels blanc-i-blaus de Baviera fins als blanc-i-vermells d’Àustria.

Esmentada per primera vegada en un document del 1205 com a propietat del duc Lluís de Baviera i del bisbe de Regensburg, la fortalesa de Kufstein fou escenari de conflictes militars i objecte de disputes entre els estats alpins, especialment els ducats de Baviera i del Tirol. El 1336 fou per primera vegada un objectiu militar quan el margravi Carles de Moràvia va trobar-se bloquejat per la fortalesa en una persecució de tropes bavareses.

El 1342, la duquessa Margarida del Tirol va rebre Kufstein como a regal de noces del seu marit Lluís de Brandenburg, fill de l’emperador d’Alemanya Lluís el Bavarès. Va ser la primera vegada que fou vinculada al Tirol. No obstant, quan Margarida cedí tot el Tirol al duc Rodolf IV d’Habsburg el 1363, els bavaresos la van reclamar i van sotmetre Kufstein.

Després de la mort del duc Jordi el Ric de Landshut, el 1503, esclatà un conflicte entre les branques de l’Alta Baviera i del Palatinat bavarès de la dinastía Wittelsbach per obtenir la sobirania sobre Baviera. A la Guerra de Successió bavaresa, el duc de Borgonya i rei de romans Maximilià de Habsburg, que tenia la seva cort a la capital històrica del Tirol, Innsbruck, es posà a favor de la branca de l’Alta Baviera.

Com a governant del Tirol, a Maximilià l’interessava la conquesta de la vall inferior del Riu Inn, doncs obtenir el control del castell de Kufstein era de gran importància estratègica. El 1504 va aconseguir que Kufstein passés a mans de la Casa d’Habsburg. Maximilià es convertí posteriorment (1508) en emperador del Sacre Imperi Romano-Germànic.

Després de gairebé 200 anys, una altra Guerra de Successió, l’espanyola, provocà que les banderes blnc-i-blaves de Baviera tornéssin a onejar a Kufstein. El 1703, el príncep elector Maximilià avançà contra Kufstein en el seu camí cap a Itàlia. No fou fins a finals del 1704 que va finalitzar el setge i Kufstein y la seva fortalesa van ser tornades a Àustria.

De bell nou, exactament cent anys després, Kufstein torna a caure en mans bavareses per decissió de Napoleó, qui concedeix a Baviera tot el Tirol. Aquesta situació es perllonga fins el 1814, quen el Tirol torna sota el domini austriac. Després de la Primera Guerra Mundial, la República d’Àustria es va vendre la propietat de la fortalesa, que va ser comprada per la ciutat de Kufstein, que n’és propietària des del 1924.
