The New Covid boosters are out

So, I haven’t seen much noise about this, but the new bivalent COVID boosters (the one good against omicron) are available in the USA. I don’t know the specifics state by state, but here in Alabama the new boosters are available at pharmacies. No appointment needed or anything. I’ve just not seen any buzz around this. The infectious disease modeling is forecasting a significant spike over the winter along with a really nasty and fast-hitting flu season. So go to your nearest CVS or whatever pharmacy (I got it from a local mom and pop pharmacy) and get it. According to the CDC everyone 12 and up is eligible for the new booster... so go do the thing. And if you want an anecdotal account, I got mine yesterday along with my flu shot. Same arm, so I’m only gimpy on one side! And I was significantly less bleh feeling that I was for the other shots. Go do the thing!

Got my Omicron booster on Friday. 💉

With the holidays coming up and a lot of time spent on crowded trains and planes, it’s a good time to get the bivalent Omicron booster.

In the US the long Thanksgiving Day weekend starts on Thursday. COVID-19 is still around. It was almost exactly a year ago that the Omicron wave began to spike. Holidays, among other things, are a prime period for spreading infections.

While most of the mass vaccination sites have closed down, many pharmacies, public health clinics, and medical centers still offer free immunizations. In the US you can find them at the usual locator.

I was able to get an appointment for the new Bivalent booster, so if you have been waiting it’s time to go get it. I was also able to pair it with a flu shot, so keep that in mind. The news is that it will be an early and bad flu season, so keep that in mind.

As of Thursday, 1,062,130 Americans have died of COVID-19. Roughly 3,000 Americans continue to die every week from the virus.

That hasn’t stopped Republicans from introducing anti-vaxxing legislation in state legislatures.

Across the country, Republican lawmakers have drafted a pile of anti-vaccine mandate bills this year, chipping away at a foundational health practice for the last half-century. More than 80 anti-vaccine bills have been introduced in state legislatures, according to academics tracking the phenomenon, dwarfing the number of countervailing pro-vaccine bills. Public health experts are preparing for an all-out war on school mandates and other vaccine measures in states like Texas.

The GOP seems to have a death wish.

It’s befuddling in part because the life-and-death stakes should already be clear. A new study from a group of Yale University scholars found that Republicans experienced a meaningfully higher death rate from Covid-19 than Democrats — and the difference was almost entirely concentrated in the period after the vaccine became available.

This comes just as a new COVID surge seems to be getting underway in Europe.

So if you want science to govern your state’s public health practices rather than Fox News quacks pushing cattle dewormer and bleach, register to vote and Vote Democratic.

'pre-clinical' means non-human studies. and believe me, if they had any halfway decent clinical human trial data to include in their application, they would definitely not even mention these preclinical studies (in rats or mice most likely) to begin with.

'previous clinical and real-world evidence' refers to the original vaccine (rushed human trials), and the previous bivalent booster (no human trials before market release) formulated for a different strain. just because regulatory agencies have agreed to accept the little trick of the updated vaccine not being 'different enough' to warrant new trials, does not mean it is not. remember this difference is significant enough for the new strain to evade any existing immunity.

#if you take this. you are the trial. #XBB is the latest strain. all other strains referenced only have human data from the previous bivalent booster #or the original trial. #there is ZERO human data for XBB vaccine boosters
