Sometimes you get to experience moments that snap you out of an extended period of acute existential dread (AED). Just as quickly as the creatively-crippling environmental catastrophes we face as human beings are realised, they can disappear with breakneck speed. Sometimes people snap out of it, sometimes they don't. Sometimes all it takes is the sight of a bird fishing on a river where his kind have fished for millions of years before. But before you snap out of it, you have to get there first. That's the hard part; finding the motivation to journey on to happiness. Which brings me to one underlying thought about that journey: -- "Beauty and grace are performed whether or not we will or sense them. The least we can do is try to be there." -- Azure Kingfisher. 🔎(Ceyx azureus). ⏳Conservation Status: Least Concern (population decreasing). 🗺Endemicity: Australia; Indonesia; Papua New Guinea. 📷 Daintree River, Queensland. -- #azurekingfisher #kingfisher #daintree #daintreeriver #wettropics #birdsofaustralia #australia #queensland #tropicalqueensland #tropics #thewettropics #birds #naturephotography #nature #wildlife #birdsofthetropics #birdphotography https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx9RwvSFcLD/?igshid=1gomgi01jw9z4

The tooth-billed bowerbird is only found in the heavily forested upland areas of The Wet Tropics. Its common name comes from the serrations on its upper and lower mandible that it uses to snip the brightest green leaves from trees. These leaves are then strategically placed on the forest floor in an area it uses as a courting arena. The males are constantly replacing older leaves with newer leaves and inbetween tending to the bower they will perch nearby and call for hours on end, imitating the calls of surrounding birds. -- Click through to the link on my page or to find out more info on each of these special bird species visit: 🐦 www.samuelhumphreys.bigcartel.com 🐦 -- The print is limited to a short run of 20 that will help to raise funds for the conservation efforts of these birds as well as helping to raise funds for the first field guide to be dedicated to these endemic birds. $10 from each print will be donated to @rainforestrescueau who are a not-for-profit organisation that protect and restore rainforests in Australia. -- 🌳 Limited edition of 20. 🌳 Archival ink on 100% recycled 🌳 200gsm matte-coated art paper. 🌳 Hand numbered & signed. 🌳 A2 (420mm x 594mm) (16.5 x 23.4 in). 🌳 Shipped in postal tubes. -- #13endemics #toothbilledbowerbird #thewettropics #birdsofthetropics #wettropics #birds #birding #naturalhistory #ornithology #birdart #conservationart #illustration #rainforest https://www.instagram.com/p/BzsFBTJlLkE/?igshid=118tw9go91wyk

With strict guidelines from the trees of the tropics I have been granted permission to release this print in limited numbers. 🤣 -- The Wet Tropics is home to home to nearly half of Australia's bird species, the World Heritage Area harbours more than 370 bird species. Of these, thirteen species are known to be strictly endemic to The Wet Tropics, found nowhere else in the world, with 9 of them from the uplands and the other 4 ranging down to lower altitudes. -- The forests of The Wet Tropics are living museums. They contain the most complete and diverse living records of the major stages of evolution in the world. Its rainforests are remnants of Gondwanan forests from 60 million years ago and some species have survived and exist here today as the closest relatives to ancient Australian songbirds. It is thought that bird song originated in this bioregion. -- The 13 Endemic Birds of The Wet Tropics are illustrated here in a large A2 limited edition archival print which is annotated to denote the species in their respective form. The print is limited to a short run of 20 that will help to raise funds for the conservation efforts of these birds as well as helping to raise funds for the first field guide to be dedicated to these endemic birds. -- $10 from each print will be donated to @rainforestrescueau who are a not-for-profit organisation that protect and restore rainforests in Australia. I've been waiting a long time for these UniPin 0.03mm pens to arrive. Now my lines will be getting even finer! Which is good news for things like detailing a bird's eye, adding depth to shadows and crosshatching, finer feather details, and all that good stuff. But I can't help but think of the negatives, things like severe hand cramps, higher possibility of carpal tunnel syndrome, earlier onset of every artist's worst nightmare; presbyopia, posture issues and all the other stuff that comes with sitting for hours on end with your head 15cm from the page. I'm looking forward to an early onset of all the signs of old age....all because I like to draw birds! -- #13endemics #unipin #penandink #pigmentink #inkwork #blacklines #linework #illustration #birdart #naturalhistory #illustrator #birds #birdsofthetropics https://www.instagram.com/p/BrWvYzVHHdP/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1sjyn8u47bml8

This is a large-billed gerygone (Gerygone magnirostris). The gerygones, along with the Australian bowerbirds, scrubwrens, thornbills and chowchilla are the oldest songbirds in the world. It is thought that birdsong evolved from these Australo-Papuan birds right here in the Wet Tropics of Queensland. It's likely that the first songbirds sung in rainforests very similar to the rainforests of The Wet Tropics, and it is therefore very likely that the song of the gerygone is the oldest piece of music in the world. -- I'm lucky to hear their song every single day and it shuts me up when I do. These birds are tiny, brown, no bigger than 10cm, some would say nondescript--little brown birds as they are often called by the throwaway birdwatcher. But they are far from just being a little brown bird, they possess one of the oldest pieces of music in the world and it is rarely heard.  -- Their habitat is shrinking and their numbers are slowly declining. They live in mangrove forests, swamps and coastal forests of northern Australia & Papua New Guinea and the insects they eat as their main food source are directly threatened by pesticides used in agriculture. -- Swipe across to hear their song.  -- #largebilledgerygone #gerygone #birdsofthetropics #birdsofthewettropics #oldestsongintheworld #birdsong #song #birds #birdwatching #birding #wettropics #thewettropics #songbird https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs11h11H6Yl/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ipeoyghtaeq4

Stayed up all night doing this veerrrry rough mock-up of what the pages of the 'Field Guide to the Endemic Birds of the Wet Tropics of Queensland' might look like.
