How Oversized Clothes are Comfy To Wear for Gen Z's in EVERYTHING & EVERYWHERE!
Hello Everyone!
Welcome back!
Join us on journey as we unravel the future of style!
"Fashion trends are constantly evolving, reflecting the changing tastes and preferences of different generations".
As you may remember what we are focusing about? But if you are new to Tumblr or wanted a refresher, here is a refresher about Gen Z Fashion Trend. One generation that has been making waves in the fashion industry is Generation Z, commonly referred to as “Gen Z.” We are exciting to demonstrate you what the world of Gen Z fashion trends for 2023, exploring their unique style choices, fashion statistics, and innovative approaches to clothing.
Tumblr media
Let's begin!
I just gotta say growing up – oversized clothes were anything but flattering in my case (taller and thinner than average might have had something to do with this now style misconception. maybe?), but I did wear then back in the day. You know the infamous baggy jeans, the oversized sweatshirts, flannel shirts, maxi skirts. Things got better for me when fashion started being more flattering in terms of cut and fit, and it somehow overlapped with me growing up, being more confident, knowing a few more things about what I like and what I don’t in terms of fashion. But common who doesn’t look good in skinny jeans for example? I mean contrary to belief they are theeee most flattering jeans cut.
Anyway… while fashion is still very inclusive in terms of what to wear in 2021-23 – some trends do stick out more than others and somehow make more of a statement, and even hang around more than others. THIS is the case with OVERSIZED trend. Big clothes are everywhere. And we’re not just wearing them balanced with fitted clothes, you know – oversized bottoms, fitted tops and vice versa. No sir. We are drowning in oversized. Tops, trousers, tees, jackets, coats, shirts, chunky boots, big square heels – everything is a few sizes bigger.
Interesting isn’t it.
Oversized Tops in Stores!
Stores are marketing there oversized tops from various stores such as Nordstrom, Tillys, Aerie, Walmart, Ubran Outfitters, etc. Gen Z loves oversize clothes due to allowing them to move more freedom and forgiving of body imperfection...

(Pandemic Hit!)
This craze started a while ago and with this pandemic I feel like it’s only gonna get bigger (lol) – we’re home still, sort of, working in loungewear or sweats, getting further and further away from diet culture (thank god!), loving food, loving our little routines, getting focused on some others things, and body image I guess ain’t that big anymore. Hopefully. I am reaching here maybe a little bit, but I do believe fashion goes deeper than what the eye meets, and is a relefcltion of much more than just clothes.
So in this mindset context and social reality – oversized trend and clothes are a form of body liberation, defocusing on body image and focusing on comfort, style, fabric quality, movement, accessories… Maybe. Who the hell knows.

(Famous Celebs!)
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wears an oversized blazer.
From boxy fits to exaggerated shoulder padding, oversized blazers are slated to be one of the hottest ongoing trends of 2020. Wearing the style in the colour of the season – shocking fuschia pink — Rosie Huntington-Whiteley pairs hers with a loose-fitting longer-length pant in a neutral beige colour.

2. Emily Ratajkowski wears oversized wide-leg pants
Tumblr media
Off-setting her oversized wide-leg pants and boxy blazer with a cropped tee, we are (as usual) living for Emily Ratajkowski’s killer style — but there’s no doubt her adorable pup Colombo is her greatest accessory.
3. Camila Cabello wears an oversized tie-die hoodie
Tumblr media
Tie-die-everything has been all over the socials during quarantine — and you can bet this will be a trend you’ll be seeing in real life this summer. Camila Cabello shows us how to keep it cozy while keeping not-so-distant from boyfriend Shawn Mendes.

Tumblr media
Serving up some of the best street style looks of 2019, Celine Dion has been rocking the oversized trend for some time now. Mixing proportions, prints, colours and styles, Dion proves she can make anything work.
5. Yara Shahidi wears oversized wide-leg jeans
Tumblr media
Whatever you’ve heard about wide-leg jeans being an unflattering fit, forget all that and instead take your cues on this oversized trend from Yara Shahidi, who can officially do no wrong.
6. Billie Ellish glows bright in oversized neon pieces
Tumblr media
Looking like the ultimate designer highlighter, Billie Ellish rocks oversized-everything in blinding neon so bright, even she came prepared with shades.

Okay, quick resource for dyes for the sake of avatar fic. Not comprensive, just something a writer can springboard off of.
First things first: a bit about the process. Before you can dye your fiber, you usually need to treat it with a mordant. Think of mordant as primer. It's what allows the dye to fix itself to the fiber instead of just sitting on top until it's washed out. This is an excelent article that goes over mordants used in contemporary natural dyeing, specifically their toxicity.
After the mordant, the fiber can be dyed. Sometimes heat is used, but not always. The fiber needs to be stirred throughout its time in the dye bath and there must be enough of the dye bath for the fiber to move easily to ensure even color. It then needs to be rinsed, washed until the water runs clear, then hung to dry, typically out of the sun. Items used for dyeing should not be used for cooking and the dyeing itself should be done in a well-ventilated place, especially with the use of metallic mordants like iron and copper.
Animal fibers, like silk and wool, take to dye better than plant fibers, like cotton and linen, but are more fickle. Wool likes to felt, and does so with excessive heat, moisture, and agitation; all of which are usually used in the process.
Overdying is the process of layering dyes to get the shade you want and dyes can also be modified to change their color.
Also note that if skins were dyed the Inupiaq way, it would be by rubbing the (preferably powder) dye into the skin and then setting it rather than these exact methods for dyeing yarns and fabrics. In fact, pattern pieces would be cut according to the skin or fur's natural color variation for effects that one would get with different colored fabrics.
Avocado-pink. I describe the exact shade as a "dreamy sunset cloud pink" and if I had to guess, I'd say Ty Lee's clothes are dyed with avocado. The dye is extracted from the pits and skins (sometimes both are used, sometimes one or the other). Avocados are native to south-central Mexico
Black beans-blue. Blue like the evening sky, it comes from the beans themselves. Native to Central America
Black walnut-brown. Rich dark brown, from the hull of the nut. Infamous for being difficult to shell (some people run them over with their cars to crack them open). Native to North america.
Copper-bluish green. Typically used as a mordant or modifier, known to "sadden" colors by tinting them blue or green. Gentler on animal fibers (like silk and wool) than iron, which is used for similar purposes
Cutch-red to brown. Similar to the avocado dye, but deeper and muddier. Native to india
Indigo-blue. Used today to dye blue jeans. Dye is known to fade and rub off. Dye is extracted from the flowers of the indigo plant.
Iron-green to brown-gray. Typically used as a mordant or modifier to darken colors, like copper, but can be used as a dye itself. Sometimes rust specifically (a product of iron oxidizing) is used as a dye for its redhead orange color. Iron can damage animal fibers with prolonged exposure, making them feel rough.
Lac-purple to black. Extracted from the shell of the lac insect native to India
Logwood-purple. Not very lightfast. Adding acid to the dye bath will give you warmer gold tones.
Madder-orange to red. Dye extracted from the root, used in Europe, the Middle East, and some parts of China and North America
Oak galls-light brown to gray. Oak galls are growths caused by wasp eggs found on oak trees and are sometimes used to make ink, as shown in The Secret of Kells. Though a solid black ink rather than green like the movie. Can be used as a mordant, and makes a nice shade of black when dyed with iron.
Onion-yellow to orange, the dye is extracted from the skins
Pomegranate-greenish yellow, dye is extracted from the rind, the more ripe it is the less green. I read about a blue dye coming from pomegranate rinds, and have seen dyes made with them used with a dark concentration of iron to make a rich midnight blue, but anecdotes from natural dyers indicate the pomegranate rind and iron alone make a mossy green. May need more research into the process of getting blue from pomegranates.
Safflower-yellow and pink that can darken/saturate to red. The yellow dye can be extracted, leaving a pinkish one behind that can produce a lovely scarlet shade. Very time- and labor-intensive, very expensive.
Tara-gray to purple. Dye extracted from tara seedpods native to South America
Tumeric-yellow. Described as a sunshiney yellow-gold. Not as lightfast as one might think. Extracted from the root.
Woad-blue. Described as a medium blue. Native to the steppe and desert regions of the Caucasus, as well as Central and Western Asia
Anyone with more information on the topic is free to add it.

I?? I searched Chicken Choice Judy on google out of curiosity because it sounds oddly familiar like there’s a similar-sounding name and I found 4 websites selling the shirt design. But the descriptions on these pages are BUCK WILD??
Written version of the descriptions under the cut (very long).
[Begin ID
First image states:  Long ago, when I had hair, I was an undergrad living in a house with nine other men. Near as I can tell, three of them (not sure which three) never bought food, just lived off what they stole from the Chicken Choice Judy shirt But I will love this other seven. We had several house meetings about it, but nothing changed. One day, I came in from grocery shopping. By coincidence, all 10 of us were in the kitchen. I started putting my stuff away. 1st thing I pulled out of the bag was my half-gallon of milk. I opened the carton, took a couple of drinks from the carton, then gargled some of it, and spit it back in. I opened my tub of margarine and licked the whole surface. By now, the room chatter had stopped because the other nine jaws had dropped open.) To your original question, those specific topics would take several years to build, as they depend on several layers of pre-requisites, which would require either that more advanced topics such as algebraic topology to be taught in elementary school, or that the buildup process happened blazingly fast during high school – both of which probably stretch the biological limits of what pre-teens and teenagers can reasonably be expected to accomplish. I spit on all my veggies, took the bread out of the package, and licked and spit on it, then carefully put it all back in the plastic bag. Remind teenage daughters to look through them before going on date with the boyfriend, in case they want to use one. I labeled it all and put it away. None of it was stolen. I never said a word, but I made it a point to repeat the performance anytime anyone was around to see it. Others began to emulate my approach and food theft stopped. Even I found it revolting, but it solved the problem. Works even better if you are sick or can at least make your thieving roommates think you are. While some cities are starting to reopen in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, people around the country are continuing to wear masks in public and practice social distancing. Vogue is committed to staying safe, and offering hopeful, optimistic content that highlights moments of camaraderie and exceptional acts of heroism from around the world. We are all looking for a little comfort too—be it a soothing Instagram account or a stylish creator on TikTok. It reminds us of the power of little things.
Second image states:  A couple of guests informed me my office was too minimalist and that they expected more things to be hanging on my wall the Chicken Choice Judy shirt besides I will buy this next time they visited my wife’s and my home. I kinda hope they held their breath while they were waiting for our next invitation. They both went on to backstab me and my wife pretty bad a few years later. Another set of guests tried to squat. I had driven them all the way from Florida to Massachusetts under the impression that they had jobs and a place to live lined up. They offered no money for gas, hotels on the three-day trip, or compensation for the inconvenience and effort. He even tried to weasel out of the dinner he offered as a thank you by forgetting his wallet. The dude got me off the streets years ago and I wanted to pay him back in some way, but my wife and I were in no position to have extra residents in our home. We just don’t have the room or money. I made all of this VERY clear and told my old buddy that we could only house them for a couple of days max. There are MANY other details, but the disrespectful thing my former friend said was wordless. As I was kicking them out and they were angrily loading stuff into my car to bring them anywhere but here, my buddy left his gigantic knife right in the center of my wife’s desk. Like that was supposed to make us change our minds and let them stay? In the days of dial-up, I had a family call and not be able to get through because we were online. They decided to show up unannounced. They literally caught me in my underwear as they were let into the apartment before I could even react to being rudely surprised. Some of my family members have a history of abuse, violence, and stalking, something at least one of the visitors, my mother, was quite aware of since she lived through it with me. Her tagalong friend decided to put in her two cents and tell me I should get a call waiting or a second line because they were trying to call me. That did it! I suddenly forgot I was just wearing underwear and angrily asked my mother’s friend if she was paying my phone bill. My mother-in-law, stepfather and mom’s friend beat a hasty retreat and NEVER did the pop-in ever again.
Third image states:  That was why when we did get to reality shows, Etro and then Dolce & Gabbana plus Jacquemus later in France, it was wonderful. Clothes are all about contact: As a wearer, you feel them on your skin, and as a watcher, you process them with your eye. The watching part can be done secondhand, but the Chicken Choice Judy shirt in contrast I will get this impact will always be second to the real thing. I read some commentators in the U.S. saying, “Too soon” or “Wear a damn mask!” which I always did, but these opinions while valid enough lack perspective. Milan and its surrounding region Lombardy went through what New York did but earlier. Through sagacious governmental management much more effective than that of the U.S., Italy has managed dramatically to flatten the curve across the rest of its territory. These shows just like the reopening of flights, stores, factories, and restaurants were symptomatic of recovery that, far from being taken for granted, is being tended to with vigilance and cherished with gratitude. The digital Fashion Weeks were better than no Fashion Weeks at all, but as an upgrade on the real thing? Nah. Like everyone, I missed the shows in the experiential sense this season. But for the first time since I began covering the collections several years ago, I didn’t miss a single brand or designer’s contribution to Paris Fashion Week. Which is to say, thanks to the Fédération’s online platform, I was able to watch every name on the haute couture and men’s calendars. This brand on-demand convenience not to mention being spared the logistical headaches of zigzagging across the city was pretty great. Also, everything was on time, from the films to the manner in which we filed our reviews. While efficiency can be satisfying, it’s not necessarily exciting. Ultimately, we had to accept that the focus this season wasn’t going to be the clothes but rather the brands conveying some combination of identity, process, and values. And in the absence of standardized criteria as in, showing a minimum number of looks, specifying a time range, it was interesting to observe how heterogeneous these experiments proved to be quasi–ad campaigns versus short films, conceptual or fantastical visions versus raw and documentary style. A proper kimono takes nearly an hour to put on – I’m sure most Japanese girls would much rather spend a few seconds and slip on a dress. Get survey responses from targeted consumers today.
Fourth image states:  Around a decade ago, not long after he started his own label, Massimo Alba made a great mistake. A batch of shirts and T-shirts he was working on that had already been garment-dyed one color were mistakenly exposed to another. Speaking at his showroom presentation this weekend, Alba said: “It’s very interesting to me that so many good things start out as mistakes like this.” That accident was to Alba what the Chicken Choice Judy shirt moreover I will buy this mold-infected petri dish was to Alexander Fleming: a stumbled-upon eureka that led to a career-defining course of the investigation. This collection featured a series of softly tailored jackets, corduroy pants, and shorts, plus light cashmere sweaters that were hand-overdyed two, and sometimes three colors. It’s a process that led to variations in tone that included acid-trip floods of purple on purple to subtle bleeding of magenta across mustard yellow. Like most of Alba’s garments, these dyed pieces appeared at first glance conventionally prosaic. The more attention you gave them, however, the more their exceptional qualities became evident. Take a pale blue jacket, for instance, which at that first glance seemed passingly related to a surgeon’s scrubs. To the hand it was light and almost textureless in its softness: The fabric was a cotton mousseline developed for Alba by Albini. Long-sleeved, in a delicately mottled finish of washed-out sky blue, it made for an ideal mid-summer shake in pink, sleeveless, it was an impactful shirting second skin. Other interesting developments this season included a cotton pant named the Myles with acutely kinking stitched gather at knee-level on both legs and another handsome pant, baggy in white poplin, with patch pockets. A blue tropical weight jacket named the Lenny, after Bernstein, was Alba’s interpretation of a bohemian creative’s ideal piece of workwear. Collarless shirts in ripstop linen and button-up short-sleeves in terry were further finely effective coups de théâtre. Alba is a self-deprecating yet dangerous designer: Try just one carefully chosen piece and that’s it, you’re spoiled for good because nobody else quite compares. The museum in Prague where this portrait is held describes the ring on her first finger as the ring given to her at her wedding. It’s not comfortable. Maybe a lot of girls think that a see-through blouse can attract the attention of boys or they think that it will make her look much smarter. Meghan has no dress sense: no knowledge of fabrics, fit, styles that flatter, proper tailoring, Her father raised her in L.A. Enough said. Her idea of dressing for an event is “dress up” like a little girl dressing up as a princess. Shiny! Tight! Celebrity “fashion” not elegant, just flashy.

Buy Workwear: Building on Menswear’s Easiest Look
Every once in a while, we’ll get an email from a reader asking if we have suggestions on how to build a more casual wardrobe. The easiest solution is to shop at places such as Ralph Lauren and J. Crew, where old, American classics have been turned into mainstream stapes. Flat front chinos, oxford cloth button downs, and 60/ 40 parkas used to define a kind of Ivy Style look, but today they’re just considered “clothes.”
At the same time, that sort of easy plug-and-play means you’ll come out looking a bit generic. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if you have a strong interest in style, it may not feel satisfying.
If you find yourself in that position, workwear can be a great starting point for building a casual wardrobe. The sort of rugged clothing that drew many men into upgrading their clothes ten years ago can still be great today. Unlike suits, it fits in well with people’s casual lifestyles, which means it won’t draw unwanted attention; it has some heritage to it, so it’s reasonably good at weathering trends; and it’s tremendously easy to throw on in the morning (no ironing or pulling things out of dry cleaning bags, workwear looks better with fades, stains, and wrinkles).
Nobody needs a guide on how to put together the workwear look that defined menswear through the early aughts. Just get a buffalo plaid shirt, something in waxed cotton, and a pair of Red Wings or Alden Indy boots. If you want to build on the look today, however, there are a ton of interesting options. Just see some of the examples above on the contemporary riffs on military parkas alone -- many of these can be great additions to a casual wardrobe if you want a look that rides the line between classic and contemporary, easily wearable and interesting. Some suggestions on how to build a more interesting workwear wardrobe:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s Not All Urban Lumberjacks : Workwear doesn’t mean you have to come out looking like an early 20th-century farmer. Kyle above wears his quilted, burgundy ts(s) jacket with dark jeans and French walking shoes (a style known as Tyrolean) in a way that feels very modern. Mike and designer Evan Kinori show how you can play with low-contrast, tonal ensembles (the key is to get your contrast from fabrics, not colors). And Boris shows how workwear can even work in the summer months with shorts and Birkenstocks.
I find the easiest starting point is to just get more interesting outerwear. Brands such as Engineered Garments, for example, will often rework classic military and hunting garments by adding extra pockets and changing the fit. Something like that can be easily worn with your regular raw denim jeans and hefty boots, but in a way that feels more stylish than your basic leather bombers. See Gerry, Brian, and our own Pete for examples.
Tumblr media
Ignore the Classics: We’re big fan of classics here at Put This On, but sometimes guys can lean a little too hard on whatever they think will make their wardrobe the most timeless and versatile. Instead going through a checklist of menswear essentials -- the perfect peacoat, the classic M-65 jacket, and the service boots that’ll go with anything -- buy things that excite you. I reach for my overdyed Kapital side-zip boots more often these days than standard-issue Red Wings. Many of these more offbeat styles can still weather trends by virtue of them being too weird for high-street stores (which is usually where a look goes to die). Be willing to take risks and experiment. With all the online options these days for reselling your clothes, you have some insurance against missteps anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Save on Classics: OK, there are some things that are genuinely useful across the board. No matter their stripe, most workwear wardrobes can benefit from a washed chambray shirt, some plaid flannels, a pair of good jeans, and a sturdy sweatshirt. If you’re looking to save money, however, cut back on the classics. The retail landscape is littered with options here, so unless you’re splurging on a unique Aloha shirt from Kapital, the difference between a flannel from Wallace & Barnes and some uber-high-end Japanese brand will be marginal.
The one classic item worth getting right: jeans. You don’t have to spend $300 for a pair, but you’ll want to upgrade from mass-market options (good denim just ages better than what you’ll find at The Gap). Try the raw denim offerings at Gustin, Unbranded, and Uniqlo if you’re on a budget. If you have more to spend, 3sixteen’s SL-100x is a personal favorite around the $200 price point. It’s a slim-straight cut with a decent rise that’ll leave you covered, even when sitting down.
Tumblr media
Follow Certain Brands and Stores: A lot of this is about just training your eye and finding what works for you. And the best starting point here is to follow certain stores, many of which will all have their own point-of-view. If you find a brand you like, Google their lookbooks to get an idea of how things can be worn (note, they’ll often be a bit over the top for the sake of artistic inspiration, but you can always tone down things in real life).
Some of our favorite stores include Unionmade, The Bureau Belfast, Frans Boone, Kafka, Cultizm, Stag Provisions, End, and Mr. Porter. Their extensive brand list means you can find almost anything there. For denim and the sort of things you’d wear with denim, we like Self Edge, Standard & Strange, Pancho & Lefty, BlackBlue, Dutil, Tate & Yoko, Imogene & Willie, and Blue in Green. Alpha Shadows sells terrific retro-inspired outdoor gear, especially from hard-to-find Asian brands (Namu in Texas also carries Eastlogue, a great Korean workwear label). And while they’re not really a workwear store, No Man Walks Alone carries great, hard-to-find Japanese companies, such as Kaptain Sunshine and, coming this season, Fujito. For something that borders on contemporary streetwear, check Haven and Union.
There are also a ton of smaller boutiques that focus on a sort of neo-heritage look. See Superdenim, Independence, Indigo & Cotton, Jack Straw, Up There Store, American Trench, Ball & Buck, Blue Button Shop, Context Clothing, Best Made, Supply & Advise, Tanner Goods, The Hill Side, and 14oz. Lastly, don’t forget about some of your favorite brands’ own online stores. There’s rarely a season where I don’t want something from RRL.
Again, use these shops and the brands they carry to train your eye. Unlike with tailored clothing, dress here is more governed by feelings than rules -- you just have to explore and find your own inspiration.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Incorporate Vintage: Buying vintage isn’t just a great way to save money -- many of today’s pieces are often just riffs off a vintage find, but marked up to designer prices -- it’s a good way to improve an outfit. You don’t have to go full vintage, but wearing something hauled out of the back of a thrift store can be a nice way to incorporate that kind of patina and honest wear that makes these ensembles so appealing. And, if you’re a cubicle farmer like me, that sort of wear can be tough to achieve on your own.
We have tons of guides on how to thrift both locally and online. Wooden Sleepers also sells some great things through their Instagram account. And of course, our own shop specializes in vintage goods.
If you’re looking to get your first vintage piece, consider French chore coats, military field jackets, denim truckers, OG-107 green fatigues, thick belts, and jewelry. On hot days, when your outfit is a simple overshirt layered over a tee, a necklace with some vintage pendants, a Navajo cuff bracelet, and a silver ring can make all the difference. (Self Edge is also great for jewelry, if you want something new).

How is everyone doing? Still hanging in there? I sure hope so... I've been keeping busy with my stitching, reading, beginning a new (non-cross stitch)  project (which I'll let you in on some day soon!), trying to limit my news intake, and connecting with family members via Zoom and Board Game Arena . Since this whole strange Covid-19 saga began for us in mid-March, the only person I've talked to face to face is my husband! Such a strange feeling...  My family met up for a virtual game night on Easter Sunday (on Board Game Arena) and it was wonderful to see everyone's smiling faces. My oldest son and daughter-in-law in California, middle son and girlfriend who live 30 minutes away, and my youngest son in the Washington, DC area all connected online for games of Yahtzee and Sushi Go. I basically just watched and coached my husband a bit in Yahtzee as only five players could play at a time.My stitching has been hit and miss--still having trouble settling, but I do try to sit down each day for a couple hours in the evening. I know you've seen these designs stitched up many times, but I hope you don't mind seeing my versions... First, is the Easter Holiday Hoopla design by With Thy Needle and Thread. I fell in love with this cute bunny the first time I saw him and am so pleased with how he turned out. I loved the colors on the chart and chose some similar overdyed threads from my stash to stitch him. He is stitched "over one" on 28 ct. ice blue Jobelan so the stitched area is a mere 2" X 2". I finished him into a circle (just traced a drinking glass to get the shape on the mounting board), padded the board with batting, and added a silk handmade cording trim. A mini-pompom gave his tail a nice fluffy look.  Easter Holiday Hoopla finishThe round piece is simply glued onto a fabric-covered piece of sticky board and placed in a rustic looking 3.5 inch square brown frame. I purchased a bunch of these frames from an eBay seller, years ago, who had used them to display his butterfly collection (no, the butterflies were not included--thank goodness!). They sure have come in handy over the years and can easily be painted. Here is another of the frames that I painted and distressed last year for a different Easter finish that resides with my oldest son and daughter-in-law in California. An Easter finish from 2019--such a cute bunny! My second finish is so bright and cheery! It is called "Easter Wreath" and is a design from Tiny Modernist. The bunnies also have white mini-pompom tails like I used in the Holiday Hoopla finish above. They, too, are stitched "over one" on 28 ct. white lugana. I used the suggested DMC colors for everything except the carrots. I wanted a darker looking carrot so I used DMC 976. And, because of a slight counting error--my carrots are just a bit longer than those charted. Oops! It doesn't affect the overall look so I just left them larger. Ripping out "over one" stitching is the worst, so I avoid it whenever possible! I kept the finish very simple as the design itself is very "busy." Just a handmade cording in that pretty shade of blue that I love so much!"Easter Wreath" finishHere are both of my new Easter finishes together--looks like we had a big party going on on Easter Sunday, doesn't it? Nope--just me and my husband. It was a quiet day, but certainly one we'll always remember due to the circumstances. I didn't even get most of my Easter decorations out this year--it felt like too much of a chore for some reason. I've been gradually learning that now is the time to cut yourself some slack--be kind to others, but also to yourself. These are unnavigated waters and no one really knows what the next day will bring...I absolutely love the pretty teal blues in these two finishes!I also got a very sweet Easter card from my friend, Gabi, in Germany. She knows how much I love stitched bunnies (or any bunny, really!) so she made me this lovely card. Thank you so much, Gabi--I always love hearing from you and being the recipient of your pretty stitching!Easter card stitched by my friend, Gabi, in Germany!Much of my Easter seemed to be spent on the phone reminiscing with my mom, exchanging old photos via text with my siblings, and looking through old photos. The photos below brought back such wonderful memories of times with my three boys--dyeing eggs, hunting for baskets, and making a bunny cake each year. Oh, I miss those days so much. These were all taken in the late 80s / early 90s as you can probably tell by all the red and blue.  I think, back then, clothing designers only made boys' clothes in combinations of red and blue! It's so nice how things have evolved. And yes--they all have the same haircuts--courtesy of my husband. He sure saved us a ton of money through the years by cutting the boys' hair until they became teens. He even cut my hair when it was longer--not sure if I trust him to cut it at this shorter length, though! What are you doing about your hair? Trying to cut it yourself, getting a loved one to cut it, or just letting it grow? And we won't even talk about the hair coloring issue--yikes! By the time this is over, I'm going to have a very wide "skunk" stripe where my hair is parted, that's for sure! Time to let it go gray? I also made a couple of masks for myself and my husband. Oh, dear! I am really  not good with a sewing machine... The first one took me two hours to create, and, although the second one was easier--I do struggle!  I used one of my husband's old shirts for the green checked one (mine) and a piece of quilting cotton for my husband's. They are "okay"--mine is a bit too loose around the sides. I found another tutorial that might work better for small heads on YouTube so I might give that one a try this weekend. Wish me luck!My two masks--pretty good, but I need more practice!Comfort foods still seem to be appearing on the menu at my house and I found this delicious recipe for apple crisp right here. When I make it again, I'm going to try about 3/4 as much sugar and maybe even take it down to half as much. It was plenty sweet!  We enjoyed this as our Easter dessert (and for the next two nights, too!). Have you been whipping up any tasty comfort foods during this lockdown period?Do the apples make this a health food--ha ha!! Watching old television shows seems to be comforting to me right now, too. My husband and I have started watching an episode of Cheers (on Netflix) each night before we go to bed--a light, fun show that doesn't upset us or keep us awake. Honestly, I think we've both been sleeping better lately... And I've begun watching Downton Abbey again from the very beginning. You see, I never watched the final season, so I decided to begin all over again. I absolutely love it-- and I really think I'm picking up on so much more of the dialogue than I did before. The Dowager Countess's (Maggie Smith's) lines are just so delightful, aren't they? "Edith, you are a Lady, not Toad of Toad Hall!" ~ "What is a weekend?" ~ "Every woman goes down the aisle with half the story hidden." I could go on an on! And the scenery, the dresses, the jewels--sigh... All so well done. I still haven't seen the movie, but plan on watching it after I finish the series.  Anyone else have any comfort watching television shows to recommend? So, how many of you have talked to friends or family using Zoom? I had a Zoom get-together with my three sisters-in-law (on my husband's side) on  Tuesday and, after some initial difficulties connecting on my end, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing their faces and catching up with them. They live in Indiana, Ohio, and Connecticut so we rarely see each other anyway. We already have plans to meet this way every other week. At the end of our session, the following question was posed to us so I've decided to use that as my "Getting To Know You" inquiry this week:  "Have you found a "silver lining" in this period of being confined to your home?" In other words, few love being stuck at home, but is there something nice in it that you've discovered? For me, that answer is easy! Yes! I've discovered that my husband and I can live together happily and quite easily (other than the occasional disagreement) after he retires. I was truly worried about that, as I was so used to being home alone,   but--so far, so good! How about you?Giveaway Time... I haven't had a giveaway in a while... so how about the chart for this lovely red house sampler? It is simply two pages removed from a magazine (sorry,  I don't know which one) and if more than one person wants it, I will draw a name. All you have to do is: 1) mention in your comment that you specifically want to be entered in the giveaway,  2) answer the "Getting To Know You" question above, and 3) include your email address if I don't already have it. You may enter until April 29th, 2020 and then I'll pick a winner and announce it on my next post. The chart will be folded and mailed in a legal sized envelope to save money on postage. Good luck to all! If you are interested in winning this pretty red house sampler chart, see above!I'll leave you with what, to me, has always been a sign of hope and comfort each time it blooms. This orchid was given to me when my father died on October 31, 2014 and it still blooms almost yearly. Each time it blesses me with these beautiful white and fuchsia blossoms, I think of him and feel like he's visiting me. And this year, that feeling is especially needed and meaningful. It's an absolute perfect time for it to be blooming with all the worries and unrest swirling around us these days, isn't it?This special orchid always brings me comfort...So, more of the same for a while--at least here in Pennsylvania. We are shut down until at least April 30, probably longer. The hardest part for me in this whole thing is being unable to visit my mom--I miss her so much. It is extremely lonely for her having no family https://www.patternspatch.com/1/bunny-stitching-as-the-days-slowly-pass/ https://stitchingdream.blogspot.com/2020/04/bunny-stitching-as-days-slowly-pass.html

Dhurrie Rugs- A Better Low-Cost Flooring Solution For Home
An Indian Style Dhurrie rugs are different from other types of area rugs. Because these rugs are crafted by interweaving the threads, which creates a flat weave. Most of these type online carpets are made using the slit weave technique. dhurrie rugs and carpets are very strong because the weavers tightly weft the threads together. They also use diagonal patterns like in the Multi jute dhurrie rug, to avoid any weakness in the weaving. Many these rugs and online carpets will have geometrical or floral patterns that allow for the diagonal patterns.
What Can Dhurries Rugs Be Made From?
The most common material to make a dhurries rug is wool, like this Ivory wool rug. Most dhurrie rugs made from wool will have both the wefts and warps. Wool is also used with other materials like cotton because the wool creates a stronger weft than other materials.
Wools popularity in making dhurrie rugs is due to its qualities. Wool is easy to handle after being woven or spun because it is supple and durable. Wool also Dyes well, and there is a lot of it in the areas that are known for making dhurrie rugs. Since wool is so popular, sheep are specially bred for their wool, namely the merino because they produce longer fibers and more luxurious wool. Most of the wool that is used in dhurrie rugs today is from the fat-tail sheep. As they produce a lot of fleece and they are easier to care for
Other Best Material
The other most common material for making a dhurries rug is cotton. Cotton is very mainly used to create warps because there is a lot of it and it is strong. Cotton is used to make an ivory wool rug since it helps keep the ivory color for a longer time.
Other animal hair is also used in making dhurrie rugs. This includes camel, goat, and horse. These hairs are used very sparingly to make these rugs. Camel's hair is used to make a rug more durable. Horse mane and tail hair are used to create tassels and fringes. Goat hair is most commonly used to make very strong living room carpet and rugs. However, Angora goat hair is very soft and is most times mixed within with wool to add a shine to the fabric.
Silk is still used to create these carpets, but these living room carpet and rugs are rare as production has slowed over time. Most of these living room carpets and rugs online are made in many districts in India. Today, there are bridal dowries that have a silk Vintage dhurrie rug, which shows the family’s wealth.

Natural Dyes for Wool and Clothing
Natural dyes for wool have been used for hundreds of years. Harvesting plants and extracting the color from the leaves, berries, and flowers is an enjoyable way to gather color today, too. You can plan and plant a home garden that produces not only food but also herbs and fruits that produce intense dye baths. Many weeds that we see growing along roadways were historically gathered as plant dye sources. Once you start down this path, you will look at every plant in a new way.
Harvesting the Natural Dyes for Wool and Cloth
The first step in creating a natural dye for wool, or whatever you hope to add color to, is to gather the plant materials. In some cases, this may be the root of the plant. Choose the blossoms before they begin to wilt and dry on the plant. Some common, easy to find dye sources are pokeberry, goldenrod plant, marigold, turmeric root, crushed acorns, and pomegranates. I am sure once you start to think about it, you will come up with your own favorites list.
Our best sheep advice revealed...
Even old pros say they got dozens of tips for their flocks by reading this guide. YES! I want this Free Report »
When making your garden vegetables list, consider which vegetables can be used as a natural dye for wool or clothing. Many of the vegetables we enjoy from the garden; such as beets, carrots, and eggplants, may give off some color but won’t have a lasting effect on wool or fiber. These are referred to as fugitive dyes. The color from these plants is hard to make into a colorfast dye.
Goldenrod
While looking for natural color, think about what spices are available. Turmeric root gives off a deep yellow mustard color. Turmeric root can be used from the garden or from the spice cabinet. Used coffee grounds and tea are other examples of dye possibilities right in your kitchen.
Gather quite a bit of the natural dye material. It takes a lot to make a large stock pot of dye. When I harvest pokeberry, I harvest a two-gallon bucket full of berries and stems. There is a lot of color in the stems so there is no need to remove the berries from the stems before making the natural dyes for wool and clothing from the pokeweed plant.
Pokeberry
Making the Dye – Black Walnut Dye
Black walnut dye is made from the hulls of the black walnut. These large green balls fall from the trees in late summer and early fall. The local squirrels go crazy gathering up the inner nut and shell to store for winter. The green hull is left behind. I prefer to collect the whole fruit, gathering the dropped walnut balls in an open metal basket. This basket allows for air circulation and limits mold from growing on the nuts. Laying them out on a screen frame also helps keep mold from forming.
black walnuts
Wear disposable gloves when working with the black walnut as the dye does not wash off your skin. I have found it takes about a week for dye stains to wear off from my fingers! Break the hulls off using a hammer. The green hulls and the more brown, dried hulls can both be used in the dye bath. Use about a quart of broken black walnut hulls to two gallons of water. This will make a deep rich brown dye. Black walnut hulls and bark are rich in natural tannins which act as mordants. There is no need to add additional vinegar or alum to a black walnut dye.
Add the hulls to the dye pot. I prefer to use stainless steel or enamel coated cook pots for my dye batches. I also do not use these same pots for food preparation as some dyes contain toxins. Better to be safe. Local thrift shops, flea markets, and yard sales are good places to pick up used cookware to use for dyeing projects.
Strain out the hulls. I saved them for a second dye bath. Return the dye bath to the stove. It is ready for the yarn or fabric.
Prepare the Wool or Cloth – Mordants and Modifiers
When dyeing wool, yarn, fiber or cloth, first wet the material and soak in a mordant solution to open the fibers. This prepares the fiber to accept the dye color. Simmer the material to be dyed for an hour or two. Mordants are substances used to make the dye colorfast, and keep the color from fading quickly or washing away. Many mordants are metallic but not all of these metallic mordants are ecologically safe. Copper, tin, and chrome are a problem to dispose of safely. Alum, is a commonly found substance and is considered safe in small proportions. Other safe mordants are iron, (think rusty nails), and cream of tartar. Plant-based mordants include tannins from different sources. Acorns and Sumac leaves are good examples of plant-based mordants. Black walnut, pomegranate skin, and acorns have so much natural tannin that you can skip the mordant in the pre-dye bath. When using natural dyes for wool and other fabric, start by soaking the material and using a mordant when necessary.
Safety First
Even when using safe mordants, wearing gloves, a mask and eye protection is recommended. Only work with dyes in a well-ventilated area. Some dyes can produce an irritating or nauseating smell while simmering. These are best handled outside, perhaps on a camp stove. When making natural clothing dye, keep in mind that you are conducting experiments with natural substances. Each dye lot will be slightly different and surprising. Take good notes as you go along, so you can refer back later.
Heat or No Heat when Using Natural Dyes for Wool
Many of the darker dyes are prone to turning brown shades if the dye bath is boiled. Try to keep the heat on a low simmer during the processing time. Pokeberry dye and black walnut dye can be used cold or room temperature. When not using heat, you might want to let the fabric sit in the dye bath overnight for full effect and a good result.
Two different colors from Pokeberry. The top sample result was much browner than I wanted, so I overdyed part of it in a cold dye bath of Pokeberry dye overnight.
Take the thoroughly wet fiber from the presoak squeezing out excess water without wringing the wet wool. Place it in the dye bath. Carefully push it under the surface so that the entire skein or garment is in the dye. If using heat, keep the dye just at a simmering level for about 30 minutes to an hour.  Turn the heat off and allow the fiber and the dye bath to cool. Often I will let the yarn sit in the dye overnight.
Should You Use a Modifier?
Modifiers can change the color or the intensity of the color. Iron can be used as both a mordant and a modifier. A small amount in the dye bath can affect the color. You can also have a modifier bath ready to move the fiber to after the dye bath. It is fun to experiment with small test swatches or skeins. Some readily available modifiers are vinegar, baking soda, washing soda, iron, lemon juice or ammonia. I often add a modifier directly to the dye bath. For vinegar, I will normally add up to a quarter cup to a one-gallon dye bath.
Iron was used as a modifier to darken the color from spinach dye. Sample here is after the modifier.
Remove the yarn or fabric from the dye and place in a basin. Gently squeeze out excess dye bath water. Allow to sit for a couple of hours at this point, before rinsing. For some colors, this allows the dye to oxidize, which may add to the colorfastness. It worked beautifully when I was using pokeberry dye so now I use this method for most of the darker colors.
Rinse the yarn or fabric in cool water, being careful to not felt the wool by agitating or wringing. Squeeze out excess water and continue to rinse until the water runs clear.
What Next?
If you are anything like me, you will want to continue making natural dyes for wool and clothing. Have you already decided which dye you want to make first? Let us know in the comments below. Here are some photos of other natural dyes for wool that I have worked on using the yarn from our sheep and fiber goats.

Home Renovations
Hey you! As you know, my husband and I are up to our ears in home renovations, but I am seriously loving it! Something about taking on an unfinished home project gives me the butterflies! There is just so much possibility, ya know? Plus, we get to make it into exactly what we want! Score! Luckily, my husband is just as eccentric as I am when it comes to home decor taste! You may notice in my home decor posts that our style is not very “typical” to a newly wedded couple who is furnishing their first place together. And that is completely accurate! So welcome to our unusual lives where we take on our unique family room designs.
I am planning out the renovations, but mainly posting about the decor goals for our place because it helps me piece it all together. That way, I have something to reference back to as I make updates and what not HERE IS MY FIRST POST for our kitchen goals if you missed it! Now, I would like to start on our family room goals! Yess. Here is a before pic of our family room just so you can see what we are workin with!
To be honest, it looks scarier in these pictures than it does in real life! Haha maybe because it has already been in the works since I took this picture last. But as you can see, much needs to be done! Isn’t it a glorious work of art waiting to be made?
For starters, we will put paneling and paint on the walls (duhh) and we are actually keeping the ceiling the way it is! I personally love seeing the rafters and wiring, I think it looks so cool and industrial! Which works out because it’s just one less thing I need to do to get it looking good! Alright, let’s dive in!!!
The first thing to go in is our dreamy bookshelf! My husband and I really enjoy reading together at night, so I imagine this will be our “beginners bookshelf” until the day when we need a whole bookcase room to hold all them books! We actually set up our book-shelf in the family room already because why not? It was the first thing we did. Yes, we will have to move it temporarily to get the room paneled and painted, but we wanted it there right away! Gotta live and function during renovations still, ama right? It looks like this. (Debating giving it a cute painted overall color)
Here is a nicer and more heavy duty book shelf that I love!

I might add in for clarity that our kitchen, family room, and office are all one giant room right now! We will not be putting up walls to separate them either! Rather, we will be using creative decoration and furniture placement to keep them apart and “their own” section. I like it better this way.
That being said, this couch and partition will do the job of enclosing the family room diagonally on the outside right edge (just before the kitchen begins).

What day is it again? If you're like me, the days seem to be simply running into each other--one day seems just like the one before to the point where I really have to stop and think, "Is this Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday... ???" This seems to be our "new normal" for a while--quite a while, I think. This COVID-19 pandemic has me unable to settle--I flit from one thing to the next and I can't maintain my focus on anything. I haven't left my house in two weeks since self-quarantining after our plane flight on March 21st. I've walked out onto my patio a few times on the rare occasions when the sun was shining, but that's it. We are not supposed to be out at all in our area except for "life-sustaining" purposes (getting groceries, visiting the doctor, etc.). How are you all coping? Thank goodness I have my stitching and other hobbies to enjoy at home and keep my mind off the increasingly dire reports on the spread of the virus. I try not to look at the news, but, it's hard not to be drawn into it at the same time. As my youngest son said, this is probably one of the few times in history that the entire world is on the same side, fighting the same battle.I thought you might like to see a couple "pretties" today to give you a break from dwelling on that "thing" that has consumed our lives... I actually finished this piece in early March, before things got so worrisome. "Be Happy, Humble, & Kind" is a design by With Thy Needle and Thread stitched on 40 ct. vintage country mocha using a variety of overdyed threads from my stash.  The colors were what first drew me to this piece along with the sentiment. "Be Happy, Humble, and Kind" finishI changed the color of the man's face, hands and legs to DMC 950.A beautiful, big white house, but I'd hate to wash all those windows! Being "happy" may be a bit more difficult these days, but better days will come again!Be Kind:  one thing we can all practice--no matter what is going on around us!The latest issue (Spring 2020) of Punch Needle and Primitive Stitching" Magazine has so many adorable charts. I was immediately drawn to this robin sitting on his beautiful blue eggs. It is designed by Subrosa Designs and is called "Bless Our Nest." The original design contained the words "Bless Our Nest" below the basket, but I left them off.  One of my favorite linens, 40 ct. Woodland Newcastle was used--love the way the white shows up on it! I changed all the suggested colors except for the brown on the robin's body, which is Weeks Dye Works "Cocoa." The blue eggs are stitched with Dinky Dyes silk in "Aquamarine"--aren't they lovely? I so enjoyed stitching this one and see more robin stitching in my future!I changed the color of the flowers to white and added yellow Rhodes-stitched centers using Dinky Dyes "Aussie Gold." I also wrapped the vine around the basket handle rather than stitching it all behind as was charted. And here is my final finish--cording made of the same blue silk, a gauzy bow held together with a strip of the aqua blue gingham fabric that I backed it with. I stuck in a few berries in yellow and white, too.I just haven't been motivated to get out any of my stitched bunnies this year--hope I can make myself do so this week. This is ordinarily one of my favorite months to decorate with the pretty pastels of Easter and Springtime. I think if the weather warms up and the sun starts coming out, that will help immensely! We had horrid thunder/rain storms pass through on Saturday! Torrents of water coming down into our yard (which is on a low spot in the neighborhood) with overflow from our pond created this "river" in our side yard for a while and ruined some newly planted landscaping. Sigh... not what we needed right now!A big storm turned our normally grass-covered side yard into a raging "river" last week!Unfortunately, some of the new landscaping we had just put in last fall was damaged, too.How are you managing your grocery shopping? We've been ordering online and picking up in the parking lot of the grocery store, but that is getting increasingly difficult. And you know the one thing we've had the worst time finding (no, not toilet paper!)--flour! Simple baking flour! I guess everyone is engaged in comfort baking these days--I know I am... Cookies, granola, and a new recipe for banana-carrot muffins have been baked here recently. We do have baking flour for bread so I plan on making some in my bread machine this afternoon.  I've included links to the banana-carrot muffin recipe and our favorite chocolate pudding recipe that also made an appearance last week (just click on the name of the recipe below each photo). If this keeps up, I'll come out on the other side of the pandemic having gained 20 pounds!Easy Banana Carrot MuffinsQuick Creamy Chocolate PuddingIt was such fun reading your answers to my "Getting To Know You" questions last week. It appears that the great majority of cross stitchers are introverts (which didn't really surprise me!).  And it was nice to read how many of us take refuge in our other "hobbies" of listening to music, exercise, working puzzles, reading, and gardening when trying to de-stress. So, what question do I have for you today? As always this is just a fun way to get to know each other better--no pressure to participate. Right now, the last thing we need is more pressure, right? 1) What is your favorite comfort food?  Without question, mine is homemade bread with butter--more than chocolate, more than soup, more than macaroni and cheese casserole. I think part of the reason is that the thought (and that wonderful smell!) of just-baked bread takes me right back to my childhood. My Dad used to bake the most wonderful rye bread (two kinds, actually) as a form of stress-relief after long hours spent in the operating room (he was a surgeon). Simply imagining that bread brings instant comfort to me. (He eventually had to stop making it, though, as he was gaining way too much weight!). The days seem to be dragging on and on for me lately. Does anyone else feel that way? I hope that by the next time I post, we will be finding better ways to combat and contain the pandemic. I'm so sorry I haven't responded to your many emails and comments--just haven't felt quite like myself lately, as I'm sure you're feeling, too. I keep seeing scenes on fictional television shows and in movies of people doing "normal" things like eating in restaurants, going to movies and plays, and gathering with their extended families and I find myself feeling quite envious of the way life used to be! I know those days will come again sooner or later...  Take care now, my friends,  and thank you for your condolences and sweet comments in my previous post--they meant so very much to me. Bye for now...  https://www.patternspatch.com/blog/the-end-of-a-month-like-no-other-2/ https://stitchingdream.blogspot.com/2020/03/the-end-of-month-like-no-other.html

Boots with an Edge: The Side Zip
We generally stick to the classics here at Put This On, but side zips aren’t terribly hard to wear. And they look awesome.
They’re also not completely without precedent. Side zips -- a boot style that’s defined by its zipper on the back or medial side -- have been mainstays at traditional footwear companies for decades. French and Italian brands, such as Massaro and Sutor Mantellassi, have offered them ready-to-wear. The well-respected Edward Green used to sell a model called the Memphis. And English bespoke shoemaking firms -- including stalwarts on London’s West End, such as John Lobb, Foster & Son, and G.J. Cleverley -- have occasionally made them by hand for clients.
They’ve also become some of my go-to shoes for the last two years. If you’re looking to only get one boot, you’re probably better off with a pair of brown pebble grain or suede chukkas. Depending on your wardrobe, however, side zips can be a little edgier -- both figuratively and literally.
Style Considerations
The thing that makes side zips so useful is also the thing that can make them confusing to wear. They straddle the line in terms of formality. The clean, minimalist lines make them feel refined like Chelseas, while the front panels are often cut in a way that’s reminiscent of a Western roper. Side zips are more causal than derbies; more contemporary than chukkas; and more refined than work boots.
For this reason, side zips can be a nice way to add an interesting and unexpected element in an outfit. In the past, men such as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Bob Dylan have paired Cuban-heeled side zips with everything from grey suits to trim sport coats (see above). Ben Neuhaus and Jasper Lipton, on the other hand, show how the style can be teamed with more rugged leather jackets for a casual look. Similarly, brands such as Stoffa, Lemaire, and Margiela demonstrate how you can use side zips with contemporary, minimalist clothes -- from sleek outerwear to just a pair of trim, tapered trousers and a button-up.
Generally speaking, you can use side zips any time you’d wear a Chelsea. Chunkier, round toe models can be worn with workwear ensembles, while sleeker designs are good with topcoats and trim trousers. And while there are some side zips that look like traditional lace-up boots (which more often go wrong than they go right), I favor the simpler, pared down designs you see below. They just look less fussy.
When shopping for a pair, pay attention to the color and material (black will feel more chic, while brown leans traditional). And while a double leather sole will be standard, higher or lower profiles can be good for directional looks (lower profile can feel futuristic; higher profile with a Cuban heel can seem ‘70s). Lastly, an exposed zipper will make the boots feel relatively more rugged, while a concealed zipper will look discrete.
Tumblr media
The List:
Maison Margiela (~$500 - $1,075): Margiela makes some of my favorites in this genre. Before their current Creative Director, John Galliano, came aboard, most of the company’s side zips had a low profile. You can still find those on eBay and Yoox, although most of the models they sell today feature a higher, Cuban heel, tall shaft, and a blocky toe (see these Campus boots). Buyer beware: like a lot of designer label shoes, these aren’t the best made. Expect smoother leathers to be plasticky top-grains and the soles to be glued-on. I love my Margiela side zips, but you’re mostly buying into a look.
Tumblr media
Buttero ($286): Buttero is one of the few companies making contemporary styled, casual footwear, but in methods that traditionalists appreciate. These Brunello side zips, for example, are Blake-Rapid stitched and feature full-grain leather uppers. In other words, they’re just as well-made as your best Italian footwear. The moderate heel height and almond-shaped toe also makes these a bit more versatile than their Margiela counterparts.
Tumblr media
Lucchese ($795): Lucchese is an old, American cowboy boot manufacturer, but they also produce these handsome side-zips at their Texas factory. They’re re-craftable, when the time comes, and available in dozens of materials (three stock, but plenty more through the company’s made-to-order program). Many of the smooth leathers here leave a lot to be desired, but I like the suedes. Available at Cowboy Chief and Snake Oil Provisions. Ben, the owner of Snake Oil Provisions, has a bunch of cool outfits on his Instagram with these boots.
Tumblr media
Kapital (~$650): For a truer workwear style, Kapital has these “naval supply” boots, which come in a heavier, rounder silhouette. The leather and canvas here have been overdyed in a special mixture of persimmon juice and natural tannins, which allows the leather to age quickly and uniquely. After a few dozen wears, the leather will start to reveal the mélange of browns sitting beneath the surface. These are unfortunately hard to find, but sometimes Kapital restocks the style on their site. Your best bet is to proxy buy them through Jon at Bandana Almanac, who lives in Japan.
Tumblr media
Barbanera ($638): A much more rock ‘n roll look, maybe in the spirit of Saint Laurent (but considerably less obnoxious). Moderately high shaft, sleek toe, and Cuban heel. These feel like something Iggy Pop would have worn in his youth. Barbanera makes these in bunch of different leathers, but I prefer the suede plain toes. Wear these with stacked, skinny jeans.
Tumblr media
Nonnative ($830): These side zips are made by Officine Creative for Nonnative, who in turn made them as part of a collaboration with Rags McGregor (lots of collab’ing here). I love the chunkier, slightly cheeky style, but being that you can only get them direct through Coverchord -- a store in Japan -- they can be a bit of a gamble. For what it’s worth, Styleforum editor Jasper Lipton, who owns an older season of this model, say they run big. So, consider sizing down. Alternatively, you can check Officine Creative, who also makes side zips for their own line. I really like this season’s “tornado” style. They look easier to wear than similarly styled boots from Carol Christian Poell.
Tumblr media
Noah ($186): If you’re vegan and feel like you’re missing out, behold! By the power of Google, I’ve found vegan side zips. Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about the company or the quality of their shoes, although I assume the “suedes” will age better than the smoother "leathers” (as usual for non-full-grain leathers). They also have vegan Timbs, if you like black Timbs and black hoodies, but also really love cows.

Our Beloved Sponsors
Put This On is made possible thanks to the support of our sponsors, so twice a month, we like to give them a quick shoutout and say what’s going on with them.
The Hanger Project is known for their specialized wooden hangers -- made to help retain the shape of your tailored clothing -- but they’re also the largest online store for high-end shoe care supplies. To help customers learn how take better care of their shoes, they’ve created a YouTube channel. At the moment, there are over twenty videos, covering everything from the basics, such as how to polish calfskin leather uppers, to more niche subjects, such as waterproofing soles. If you’ve ever had trouble raising a shine on shell cordovan, they also have a video tutorial for that.
Proper Cloth is an online shirtmaker, selling both ready-to-wear and custom-fit button-ups. A lot of what they have is the kind of slightly dressier and semi-casual styles you’d want to wear with a tailored jacket. They stand out from their competitors, however, in that they have a wider selection of casual shirtings -- washed denim, chambray, seersucker, and now shadow plaid flannels. The team there just put together a new lookbook, inspired by the rugged plains of West Texas. A lot of the stuff there is designed to be worn with beat-up jeans and a hefty pair of boots.
Chipp is an old American clothier who used to dress men such as JFK during the heydays of Ivy Style. Nowadays, they still do custom clothing, but they also sell a wide range of classic, American-made accessories online. Our friend Paul, who’s the owner of the shop, tells us that his favorite summer necktie is the multi-colored shantung. “Spring is a nice time for a bit more color,” he says. “I’ve been making that tie for more than thirty years.” For the future, readers can expect eight new ancient madder ties and a new wool challis range.
If you like classic and slightly off-beat takes on Americana, Indigo & Cotton has lots of new spring arrivals. They’re a specialty shop in Charleston, South Carolina, carrying brands such as Engineered Garments, Gitman Vintage, orSlow, Howlin’ by Morrison, and SNS Herning. For warmer weather days, you can check out the popovers, in both band and traditional collar styles. The half-placket design helps mix things up when you’re just wearing them with jeans and sneakers. They also have some deals in their sale section, such as this subtly flecked Howlin’ Donegal knit offered at 40% off.
Speaking of sales, our pals at Dapper Classics have smartly tailored trousers marked down 25%. They’re made from English and Italian wools, but cut and sewn in New York City (at a factory renowned for their trousers). Gray and tan here will be your most versatile colors, although blue and dark brown can help modernize a tailored look. Dapper Classics also has some new socks in, which are inspired by the Kentucky Derby (bow ties and mint julep cups for a bit of whimsical fun). For this month, they’ll throw in a free pair of socks when you buy three or more pairs.
Finally, our thanks to Wolf vs. Goat. They have a ton of new shirts in this spring, including overdyed button-ups, cool-wearing micro-modal tees, and Tencel-cotton blend popovers. Wolf vs. Goat makes use of a lot of unique fabrics (those micro-modals and Tencel blends just being the start), which are designed to help you stay cooler, drier, and more comfortable once temperatures reach above 80.

The Best New Menswear Pieces To Buy Right Now
Les Basics x Novesta Le Running Shoe
London-based, Portuguese-made brand Les Basics does exactly as it says on the tin – aka the basics made as elegant as the French do them. Here, the label hooks up with Slovakian sneaker maestros Novesta for a plush running shoe with a leather upper and a suede overlay so you get two luxurious fabrics for the price of one in an opulent creamy stone colour.

Superdry Orange Label Softball Ringer T-Shirt
We reckon this gold and green long sleeved tee from Superdry looks a lot like the get-up worn by ordinary teen turned crime-fighting vigilante Kick-Ass in the film of the same name (if you’ve not seen it do – it’s a modern classic). Looking like a superhero is never a bad thing, and in 100 per cent cotton too – that’s a roundhouse kick right in the style chops.

R.M. Williams Chinchilla Boots
Despite the name, no chubby rodents were harmed in the making of these Chelsea boots. Instead what we get from the Australian boot-maker is a beautifully burnished leather shoe handcrafted in a sumptuous range of shades – Bordeaux or cognac, sir? We’ll have the whole case.

Oliver Spencer Theobald Clarendon Navy Jacket
It really is rather difficult to get a navy unstructured blazer wrong, but it’s even harder to get it better than the rest. Oliver Spencer has somehow managed it time and time again, exemplified by this new update on its classic Theobald model. It’s still incredibly versatile – pop a tee under it and you’ll look like you woke up this chic, wear a shirt instead and you’ll be sorted for a summer wedding, while the sweat-wicking wool and cotton blend means you won’t overheat on the train as you go to and from the office.

Salvatore Ferragamo Sunglasses
Sun’s too bright? Better put on the shades. Had too much to drink last night? Shades, duh. Just seen your ex across the street? Quick, whip those shades on pronto. Sunglasses can sort out any and every situation and so it pays to have some good ones to call on. Just as well then that luxury Italian fashion brand Salvatore Ferragamo has released a men’s eyewear capsule collection for such necessary moments. With a vintage design and the iconic backwards horseshoe logo on the hinges these shades are so nice, you’ll be wearing them in a pitch black room.

Maison Kitsune Jacquard Dream Amplifier Socks
The AW18 collection for undeniably hip French label Maison Kitsune (they’re also an indie and disco record label – case closed) is everything you could want for when the leaves start to fall and the weather starts to cool. Sleek windbreakers, wool sweaters with foxes stitched into them, stripy scarves – you name it we want it. But it was these two-tone socks with a funky space rocket design that really caught our imagination – to autumn and beyond.

YMC x Stan Ray Fanfare Blue Painter Pants
Collabs – they’re like catnip to us and we’ve just caught a whiff of another one bound to whip us into another frenzy. This time it’s impossibly cool, ready-to-wear brand YMC, which is partial to a catnip collab every now and again, and family-run workwear brand Stan Ray with an update on the classic YMC painter pant and shorts in two new colours. There’s an eye dazzlingly bright white and this overdyed turquoise.

Fila Carter T-Shirt
Brand repping has reached a whole new stratosphere with the current logo trend, although for sportswear-meets-streetwear brands the look never went away. Created in Italy and now based in South Korea, Fila has been manufacturing sportswear since 1911, and its vintage style suits the trend well, as exemplified by this massive, yet still measured and precise logo tee that gives the name away from miles down the road.
Buy Now: £25.99
Aimé Leon Dore Logo-Embroidered Sweatshirt
The streets are rife with high-fashion streetwear but it takes a rare breed to get it down to a tee. New York label Aimé Leon Dore has certainly perfected the art, with millennial friendly sloganeering – the first part of its name means ‘love’ in French – mixed with timeless style. Case in point: this cotton-fleece sweatshirt with an ultra preppy red striped trim.

A.P.C. Cologne Candle
As if cult Parisian label A.P.C. wasn’t satisfied with conquering the world of denim (seriously, you need its selvedge denim jeans in your life) it now wants to light a flame in the world of, erm, candles. Sure on paper it makes no sense but wave its cologne scented candle under your nostrils and then try telling us you need any other candle in your life.

KJUS Soren Solid Polo
Golf attire can be shapeless and sweaty work on a muggy summer morning, so what you need is something moisture-absorbing, preferably with built-in UV protection to prevent that deadly golfer’s tan and stylish enough to wear for the obligatory post-round pint. Lucky then that sportswear brand KJUS have a new line of golf polos that tick all those boxes. That’s what we call a hole in one.

Citizen Eco-Drive World Perpetual A.T Watch
When it comes to value for money watches you get a great deal of bang for your buck with a timepiece from Japanese watch brand Citizen which has the legacy and technical innovation to more than warrant a glance away from those made by the Swiss. This summer update on its flagship model, the Eco-Drive, not only looks like a watch leagues more expensive than it actually is but it can also sync the time up to 26 cities around the world which are carefully detailed around the bezel.

Men-ü Matt Refresh & Moisturise Set
Besides making you down an inordinate amount of water, flight restrictions have probably also seen you cruelly torn away from your favourite toiletries. Remember, if you’re going to carry it on the flight it must be no more than 100ml although if you would rather not have to remember such tedious info, we recommend a flight-friendly dopp kit from Men-ü. This particular kit has a face wash, refresher gel and moisturiser to provide you with everything you need to fight the jet leg – at least as far as your face is concerned – as soon as you land at your destination.

Frescobol Carioca Aquarella Swim Shorts
From patterns designed around the street mosaics of Rio de Janeiro to swim shorts that have been inspired by the incandescent spirit of samba, Frescobol Carioca knows how to give its top quality beach wear a top quality backstory to boot. And so we get these dazzling shorts named after ‘Aquarela do Brasil’ one of the best-loved songs from Brazil’s famous bossa nova movement, which has been covered in English by the likes of Kate Bush and Arcade Fire.

Topman Pink And White Stripe Shirt
Fancy looking pretty in millennial pink this summer? As an entry-level starter to the shade, you can’t go too far wrong then this vertical stripe shirt from Topman which offsets the bold colour in a lighter, pastel hue with some calming white. Pink works well with grey so pair it with a relaxed trouser in that colour below the waist and some white sneakers for breezy summer style.

Brooks England Pickwick Linen Bag
When it comes to making bike saddles Brooks England has got it down, which is just as well seeing as it has been making them for nearly 150 years. It also does a fine range in cycle bags that are designed to stay cool and light while playing piggyback on your tail end but we can’t be letting all those lycra-clad, Bradley Wiggins wannabes have all the sack carrying fun. Invest in this dapper linen carrier that can certainly lay claim to the yellow jersey.

Nike Air Max 1 Premium Beach Camo Trainers
Since it was first released in 1987, there has been more iterations and colourways of the Nike Air Max then tears shed at England’s knocking out from the World Cup. And while we’re not best pleased with the latter, we can’t hide our glee at yet another version of the former, with this retro sneaker now being pumped out in a beach camo colour combo that, dare we say it, is arguably one of its best versions ever released.
Buy Now: £109.95
Tommy Hilfiger White and Green T-shirt
Trump, Clooney, Southgate. There are just some second names out there that don’t even need the first and Hilfiger is certainly one of them. So emblazon it across the front of a baseball inspired crew neck in a zingy fresh green and white and you don’t really have to say much more besides – Tommy knows best, and when it comes to summer tees, this one is up there.

Mango Man Striped Cotton Jacket
Jackets are real troopers. You spend all winter relying on their comfort and then as soon as summer comes around they’re consigned to the desolate darkness of the back of the wardrobe, spurned like a used-up lover. So let’s give the jacket some summer lovin’ past the month of May, with this featherweight and sunny striped version from Mango which is all cotton, and all you need to be wearing up top this July.

Clarks Originals Weaver Ocean Blue Shoes
The man who invented moccasins knew how to do summer right (apparently their origin lies with the Native Americans) and when it comes to shoes in general, well, you can never go too far wrong in Clarks. So we’re as happy as Larry to see the shoe retailer put out its new set of weaver shoes, with a classic moccasin structure and made out of top grade suede in a range of eye-popping colours they also have a raised crepe sole to elevate them above the moccasin crowd.
