Ghost was right, of course. When they do the rematch, he gets his ass handed to him. First, Alejandro and Rudy flush him out of his hiding spot with outstanding teamwork. They don’t discover him, but it’s a close call. While relocating, Ghost runs into Roach, who’s been waiting and ready, and there’s nothing close about that encounter. It’s a quick and clean vendetta.

All the while, Soap takes out some AI enemies and gets to the holding cells. By the time Roach is putting a bullet into Ghost, John is well on his way to the RV. It wasn’t entirely fair since it’s been basically four-to-one, but Ghost did his best to make it harder. The truth is, he’s not sure he would be able to win this round even with Gaz, so it’s a well-deserved victory.

Just like the last time, they reunite after the match, and predictably, the mood is much lighter. There’s not much for Ghost to comment on as to future improvements; they really did well this time. Apparently the most challenging part was to get the AI-controlled VIPs to RV since they sometimes got stuck or the follow command stopped working.

“I swear I almost wanted to shoot them myself,” Soap says as he tells them of his little jungle adventure.

“Then the mission would fail. In any case, it couldn’t have been worse than escorting civilians for real,” Ghost replies, earning a hum of agreement from Alejandro. It seems he’s had his fair share of experience. Not that it surprises Ghost. He might not know what Alejandro did prior to joining the task force, but that doesn’t mean Ghost doesn’t have at least some idea. The man is clearly skilled, well-trained and experienced, and that, paired with the accent and some off-handed mentions here and there, paints an interesting picture. Special forces, most likely, and from that part of the world? That says a lot. Ghost had some joint operations in South and Central America. In Mexico, too, of course, but he would rather not go down that particular memory lane. In any case, he always respected his counterparts.

They talk about the mission a little longer before Rudy changes the topic. “I was thinking… It’s my birthday next month, and we wanted to hit the pub and have a few drinks. Wanna join us, Ghost?”

Simon sits back in his chair, thinking hard. He appreciates the offer. It’s just that it sounds like a lot of people at once.

“Come on, Ghost, last time I went to visit you, it’s time you returned the favour!” Soap joins in with a very low-blow argument. Technically speaking, it was John’s idea to visit him in the first place, but Simon happily agreed.

“I… I’ll think about it,” Ghost relents eventually because he has to give them some answer. It’s noncommittal; he can always refuse later.

“Great, we’ll hold a spot for you in any case. Just let me know if you want me to arrange a room on the base for you, it shouldn’t be a problem, but I’ll need a little heads-up,” Soap's voice betrays a smile. He wants Ghost to come, and Simon would be lying if he said he didn’t want to see him again.

They say their goodbyes and good nights, Simon takes off the headset and sighs. Sergeant appears out of nowhere, jumping onto his lap with an inquisitive meow. Simon scratches the cat on the neck, letting it sit. “What do you think, should I go?”

Stripey starts to purr, closing the big green eyes as his human continues with scratching.

“Some help you are,” Simon inclines his head but smiles softly at the creature. He should really start thinking about what he’s hoping to achieve with all of this.

So Bane, born Angel Vargas, was the only child of Rafael Vargas, who was a contract killer in Central and South America until he was betrayed on one of his jobs, resulting in his arrest.  Angel’s mother, Helena Fuentes, was arrested not long after for connections to Rafael, and gave birth to Angel while incarcerated at Peno Duro, a prison in Santa Prisca that ostensibly locks up all of Central and South America’s worst criminals.  More accurately, Peno Duro is a place you send someone you want to disappear.

Helena passed away not long after Angel’s birth and, given Santa Prisca’s laws aren’t even remotely kind to the children of convicts, Angel had to remain in Peno Duro, spending his early childhood in a detention area for children not old enough to be in the main prison yard, able to see his father, and only remaining family, only when his father had “behaved” that day.  So really, he saw his father once a month.

Most of the children in Peno Duro were given an adult inmate, usually someone in Peno Duro for a nonviolent crime, to care for them.  Angel’s happened to be a former Catholic schoolteacher that found Angel increasingly intelligent, but intelligence didn’t make him less of a victim of someone who wanted to exploit him, and that schoolteacher’s crime, while nonviolent, explicitly exploited children.

Rafael caught onto the danger his child was in during one of his rare visits, and snuck Angel a knife hidden inside a teddy bear (Osito).  Angel didn’t get in trouble for the knife specifically because if his teacher reported the knife he’d also be in trouble for allowing his father to give his child anything, even the bear was forbidden.

When Angel turned thirteen, he was shoved into the general prison populace with his father, something that he was thoroughly unprepared for.  Rafael did his best to protect Angel, but couldn’t exactly keep Angel, a teenage boy, from picking fights.  By fifteen, Angel had a few convictions of his own, mostly assault charges and one drug charge.

When Angel was sixteen, the Santa Priscan government, in conjunction with the US Government, decided to use convicts from Peno Duro in a biological experiment: Project Bane.

The intent of the project was to see the risk factors involved in engineering soldiers with the strength and endurance to withstand longterm exposure to a deadly neo-steroid, Venom.  Angel was one of the convicts selected because he was young and already a skilled fighter.  Also his low number of drug convictions convinced the researchers that he wouldn’t get addicted to Venom, but in fairness the Santa Priscan government was hoping to get an addict they could easily control with Venom.

In return for amnesty for their convictions, every subject would be put under a rigorous amount of genetic engineering to alter their endurance and strength to varying levels.  Some, like Angel, were engineered to superhuman levels, and those, numbering about six, were the only survivors of twenty test subjects.  All six were recruited into a special task force, with Angel eventually becoming the informal leader of the group.  All six were addicted to Venom, though, and were under the government’s thumb as they were the only source on the whole island.

During one job, Angel and the rest of the task force discovered the cartel they were sent to eliminate was synthesizing Venom.  They’d been sent to get rid of the only other source of the drug they were being controlled with.  Angel made the choice to defect, and the other five followed, fighting off two of the task forces sent to eliminate them before the government gave up and left them to do what they wanted.

Angel took on the moniker of Bane during cartel business and eventually overtook the entire island’s drug production, which supplied hundreds of crime syndicates around the world.  Bane gained a reputation for ruthlessness and use of military tactics, which most syndicates weren’t used to.  In fact, only two syndicates seemed to know how to deal with him without being subservient: the Seung Family Syndicate of Gotham–run by Black Mask, and the Mad House–a South London insurgent group run by Mad Mod.  The heads of both groups eventually met and became good personal friends of Bane, though their true identities remained a secret for a time.

Bane's relocation to Gotham was by his own choice when a bunch of his supply lines went no contact, and one of his distribution warehouses literally blew up. Turned out Batman had been shutting the syndicates and distributors down, and happened to blow up one of the warehouses by accident–no casualties. Needless to say, Bane was not happy and this is how Bane showed up in Gotham.

ok, so i wanted to do the follow up to my first precious plastic post in an amazing way, written super well, in perfect english etc etc etc but i realized that i really wanted to talk about it as a project because i think it's really cool and i also realized that i'm not a journalist or whatever and this is a tumblr post so i can write however i want because there are no expectations yuhu so here i come

Precious Plastic:

as i have already mentioned it is a project to increase plastic recycling. i don't know how to put it well into words so here are some of the best videos that explain what they do:

This is the launch video for the version 4 of their machines. Basically, the project started in 2013 with Dave Hakkens form the Netherlands designing some machines to recycle plastic "at home" - what i mean is that they're pretty affordable and can be operated by one person meaning that anyone with a relatively small investment can set up a small workshop where they make their own recycled products. The machines were upgraded many times and the last version was version 4, that was announced at the end of 2020.

This one is the video they made for their 10 years anniversary. It contains a better recap of their history (what i just wrote about) and it's a nice introduction to their work i'd say.

BUT! -you will ask me- what do they have that is special? we hear about plastic recycling all the time. why do you think they are worth our attention?? why do you put the solarpunk tag when talking about them?

i think it's the principles and the values that guide the project that make it different, and this is shown in the best part of the precious plastic designs: they are totally OPEN SOURCE!

this means that all of the work that they did is up on the internet, accessible to everybody, FOR FREE! and well to make it pretty simple free stuff is the opposite of capitalism.

and no, it's not just the designs. they also made tutorials and clear instructions, plus they have info on how to create a business, and a lot more.

The knowledge is shared by everybody, for everybody.

Realistically, i personally do not believe that small sale recycling can be the final solution to the plastic pollution problem. I haven't fully elaborated an opinion on it, but in general i think that the solution would come by starting to consider plastic waste as a resource, almost like a prime source, and ditch oil completely, so that we can keep using plastic where it is necessary (sanitary field for hygene, other examples don't come to mind) but using only recycled one (is it possible? i should educate myself a bit more and then i'll tell you), and this change has to happen on a big industrial level.

But you know what i also think? this kind of change can happen only if we perceive recycled plastic as a valuable material, as the normal kind of plastic, and that's precisely what Precious Plastic does. by making the recycling accessible and making it a tangible experience (there are TONS of educational project that were born from their machines), it creates a virtuous cycle in which we consider recycling the norm, and using virgin plastic the weird thing.

So yeah, i think that's it for today. obviously the precious plastic team is amazing in any possible way aand is part of a bigger project that tackles creating a sustainable world in general called one army (a big lovely peaceful solidal community), and project kamp is another of their cool things they are doing, but i'll talk about that another time. i hope this was a readable post and that it made sense. cheers!

Transit Talk Thursday

Transit Talk Thursday time: As it may be painfully obvious to many, the United States does not have the best rail-based transit. Hell, not even in North America, Canada and even Mexico do it better. But what if that wasn't the case? What if we did have the best rail transit in North America, or even the world? What would that be like? What could we do to maybe move toward that? And that question is what this week's post will be. This week I'll do my best shot at designing a dream scenario for a city in terms of nailing perfection for train travel in and around a city, along with a few examples of networks that do some things right with rail transit.

For simplicity's sake, this will mainly be focused on regional rail/commuter rail to an extent, so metros and light rail won't be included (Though some of these ideas do apply to those!) To get started, I believe that the success of regional rail transit depends on three key factors, being: 1. Schedules 2. Land use 3. Infrastructure

These aren't necessarily ordered in terms of importance, they're all pillars that help a regional rail network succeed. Sure, some may matter more than others in certain scenarios, but all three will tie together to make a transit system great. Let's start with Schedules. Schedules are arguably the bread and butter of a transit network, as they determine how many trains will run in a day, and by extension, will be a big decider in terms of how many people will be inclined to use the train. Good transit typically sees a lot of trains run during the day, to facilitate a lot of people who want to use the train. This is a good thing for helping perception of rail transit, and it decreases hesitation for people to try it since if the train runs frequently enough, having to plan a trip based on the schedule becomes unnecessary. The definition of "Good schedule" is really up in the air, but generally speaking 15-20 minutes between each train is a good metric to hit in terms of regional rail.

Adhering to the schedule is also something that makes regional rail great. No one wants to arrive late to a destination, and making sure trains run fast and on-time is how you avoid this. Note that I said "fast and on-time", so no, timetable padding is not acceptable for good transit. RMTransit video explaining timetable padding:

If you want to see some good schedules, look no further than Denver RTD's A Line to the airport.

The A Line runs trains every 15 minutes throughout most of the day, making it among the best regional rail lines in the United States, at least for scheduling. Very impressive stuff, really. So we've got our schedules sorted out, 15-20 minutes between trains most of the day, that's it then? Not quite yet, there's still a few more things to cover, next being land use. Taking people from one place to another is one thing, but the other is where people want to go. Most people don't take the train just for the hell of it (Unless you're a weird guy like me). Taking another glance at SEPTA, it is a fully electric network across it's regional rail lines, trolley lines, and subway lines. Now SEPTA is far from perfect, their schedules are a good example of this, but in terms of electrification SEPTA has got it on an iron grasp. Most regional rail systems either have no electrification or only partial electrification, so SEPTA having the entire network electrified is a point of praise for them. So to wrap up, what would be the ultimate regional rail network here in the United States? 1. Schedules have to allow for frequent, on-time trains 2. Land use around stations has to facilitate mixed-use development, not big parking lots 3. Infrastructure like electrification need to allow the system to reach far and wide to serve as many communities as possible So far, there doesn't exist any regional rail system that ticks all three of those boxes, but in the coming future, when transit becomes more and more important for how people live and work, these are the main points (imo) that new regional rail networks should be trying to hit. Definitely not immediately, but eventually. And with time, that dream could become reality.
