Befores & Afters are my favorite and I know you like them, too, so I found one and have to ask What the Hell were they thinking? The exterior is still the same colonial style farmhouse, but the 1846 home in Halifax, Massachusetts didn't sell, so it received a major remodel. 6bds, 3ba, $975K.

These pics are from the original listing. You can see that it's a true colonial farmhouse with wide plank knotty pine floors and original fireplaces.

But, baby, look at her now. One must wonder why they would attach ultra modern wires to the original colonial balusters and hand rails?

Crime against humanity, history, and all that's holy- they got rid of the original wide plank floor.

This was some historic colonial home. They could've decorated it beautifully.

But, what in hell are they doing w/this remodel? They did new floors, put either some kind of tile or wallpaper on the fireplaces, all modern, and put up a sliding barn door.

Even their original remodel sucked. They put a bathroom into a room with wood floors and a fireplace. These people need to stop.

They made some weird new bathrooms. Look at how high that chute faucet is above the black bowl sink.

And, who puts a washer & dryer in front of a fireplace, then goes thru the trouble of adding stone and a modern insert? This is madness.

Apparently they'd already remodeled the bedroom and en-suite once before.

And, here it is now. I like quartz w/a little pattern and color, rather than all white, but this is nuts.

They put a bedroom up here.

Attic stairs lead to another bedroom.

I saved the best for last. There are no photos of the original kitchen, but who doesn't want a kitchen big enough to fit a baby grand piano? Everybody needs one in the kitchen- music aids in digestion. BTW, what's up with the smeared crown molding?

And, look at the commercial refrigerators flanking the house fridge. My question is, does the wood and epoxy table convey? It's not done well, anyway, it's supposed to be even. Note the metal folding chairs in their sleek stretchy covers.

So, about curly hair care…

So @evilpenguinrika and I were talking briefly about this and I realize that so many of us curlies are in the trenches when it comes to hair care, mostly due to popularized misinformation.

I spent the majority of my life not going natural because I was overwhelmed with the thought of managing my hair myself. If I knew years ago what I know now, it would have changed my life. 🥲 But, since it’s never too late to see the light, I wanna share things I’ve learned from actual curl professionals (NOT Hairfluencers/Youtubers) about simplified healthy curly hair maintenance!

Basically, you only need three things for a bomb style with your curls:

shampoo and conditioner at least every 7 days

a good water-based gel or holding mousse applied to detangled wet hair to set your curls

hooded dryer or hand blow dryer with diffuser attached to dry your hair after setting it

And dassit.

How do you shampoo curly hair?

You get your hair sopping wet in the shower, like, make sure you spend a few minutes just letting the water run over and through your hair. Then, you take the shampoo and work it in by smoothing it through your hair from root to tip. You know those commercials where they have a woman piling all her hair up on top of her head and rubbing? Yeah, us curlies shouldn’t be doing that. It makes the detangling step even worse! 😵‍💫

How do you detangle?

After adding conditioner to completely saturated hair, take a detangling brush and work your way from root to tip. Then you rinse. This is called “active conditioning” because you’re working the conditioner in instead of just slapping it on your hair to sit. Any shed strands will be collected in the brush to prevent drain clogs, and your curls will be defined without any “fairy knots” (single strand knots).

How do I keep my curls moisturized?

Making sure you wash it regularly; don’t go longer than a week without a shampoo. Moisture is water. If your hair is dry, just hop in the shower and cleanse it, then restyle. Also, it’s best not to towel-dry your hair; more water in your strands before you set your look is key to a lasting style!

How do I style curly hair?

However you want to! But if you’re looking for a basic “wash & go”, all you need is a mousse or water-based hair gel to put in your wet hair after the shower to define your curls and give them hold until you wash again. If you don’t want your hair to be frizzy, sit under a dryer after application until fully dry.

Please note that any other products (oils, creams, leave-in conditioner/treatments) aren’t needed, and may even be working directly against your hair goals.

Working… against? My hair goals?

Yeah. 🥲 I’d say the vast majority of specialty products hawked to those with curly/kinky hair are not needed. For example, if you want luscious, defined clumps of curls, you won’t get that with leave in conditioners or butters or creams. Raw oils actually just coat your hair strand, which makes it shiny but also makes it waterproof and negatively affects scalp conditions. You have to clarify all of that out of your hair regularly in order to get moisture into your strands, so it’s better to just leave them on the shelves.

Hair care should be simple, and it is! Most people just need a consistent wash cycle with quality hair products in order to see drastic results they thought they would only get after numerous expensive hair treatments.

Basically look for stuff that doesn’t have butters & oils in the first five ingredients. Having SOME formulated into hair products is good, but not to the point where it’s the main draw of the product. It’s not the oils and butters that will help your curls, it’s the cleansing and hydration from water that does! i baked these chocolate cookies and for some reason they remind me of like nesquik chocolate cereal? here's the recipe

200g margarine, melted (i used it to substitute butter in the original recipe, it makes cookies more crispy rather than chewy)

30g olive oil (refined, not extra virgin, but that would be interesting to try) (i used it because i ran out of margarine)

2 eggs (around 140g combined)

310g flour

60g cocoa power (store brand, nothing fancy)

10g instant coffee powder (not granules, they are harder to dissolve)

1 tsp baking soda (i don't use baking powder because it is basically just baking soda with an acid, and i'm afraid that it would get less potent over time from moisture in the air allowing its components to react and then i wouldn't know how much of it i should add. for best results you would have to balance the pH levels of your ingredients but it doesn't take a lot of acid to neutralize baking soda (cocoa and coffee used here are slightly acidic) and i think it's okay if my dough is slightly alkaline because it promotes browning)

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp vanilin (apparently it's not as available in the west as vanilla extract and it does have less depth of flavor than the extract, but i suspect that the moisture would mess with the texture of the cookies, so i would advise to use vanilla sugar instead)

i mixed the wet ingredients and added the dry ingredients just kind of on top of the wet and mixed them up a bit before combining with the wet because who wants to dirty a second bowl just for mixing dry ingredients, i don't even have a second bowl big enough for this

then i left the dough in the fridge for like 10 minutes? while the oven was preheating.

then i scooped the dough with a spoon and scraped it out on the tray with a silicone spatula, didn't flatten them or anything, foolishly thinking that they would spread out while baking, forgetting that it's the moisture in the butter that makes them do that. as you can see they're pretty thick. this recipe makes two trays of around 14 cookies each.

bake at 200°C (392°F) for 20ish? minutes until solid in the middle.

i can't really compare the texture to anything else. it's not crispy or chewy, cakey or crumbly, just sort of in the middle? i think if you made them really small they would actually be pretty close to chocolate cereal, they would be dryer then and you would have to bake them for a shorter amount of time. i guess the vanilin gives them that commercial flavor that cereal has, and there's some kind of oil in cereal as well. nesquik specifically contains wheat, corn and rice so adding corn and rice flour would probably get the cookies even closer to that flavor.

And thus was born Daniel Cabot Puts Down Roots, in which two people love one another very much and then later on realize they've been in a relationship all along. I think (and I'm spitballing here) that there may be something inherently queer about this trope, maybe because in order for it to work, the characters pretty much have to be in some kind of queerplatonic relationship to begin with. Also, there may be something queer or queer-friendly about how even discussing this kind of relationship involves getting into the weeds about what constitutes a relationship in the first place, which kind of goes against the grain of a heteronormative prix fixe one size fits all relationships?
