“Her lack of sympathy is so very well known, Clehame Sandry. She is one of those who cannot believe that not everyone has her strength of mind. There is a reason people will say a thing is as unbreakable as the will of the empress.” [Gudruny] bit her lip and added, “I also think those who kidnapped Her Imperial Majesty were far more gentle with her, more careful of doing her harm, than are those who steal women who are not imperial heiresses. I think perhaps she had more opportunity to escape, so she believes we all have such opportunities to escape.”
Gudruny Iarun, Tamora Pierce, "The Will of the Empress"

I know we're all aware that Lady Sandrilene fa Toren is aroace as hell, but I did forget that she says very emphatically, within forty pages of the first book, that she is not interested in marriage, and that never changes. We stan an icon.

The Circle is Reforged
Tumblr media
Tamora Pierce's Circle Reforged books are an interesting case, because this is really where she started bouncing around in time in Emelan, and filling in some parts of story that were mentioned, suggested, or explicity referenced but not told. The books themselves were published well and truly out of chronological order, but having read them in publication order as they came out and then in chronological order on reread, I honestly don't think there's a "preferable" strategy. If you've read the Circle of Magic and Circle Opens quartets, you can explore the Circle Reforged in whatever order. However, I think I'm going to cover them in (more or less, no promises) publication order here. So let's talk The Will of the Empress.
*absolutely rampant, unapologietic spoilers for the Circle of Magic and Circle Opens quartets below the break*
This book explore the implications and consequences of Lady Sandreline being both Fa Toren in Emelan and Fa Landreg in Namorn. Our girl is practically royalty in two countries, but after she is orphaned in Hatar's smallpox epidemic, Duke Vedris in Emelan and Lord Ambros Fer Landreg in Namorn largely shield Sandry from her responsibilities as the primary landowner of the Landreg estates--which is entirely reasonable given that she is ten years old at the time.
When we get to the beginning of Will of the Empress, though, Sandry has been functionally running Emelan in the wake of Duke Vedris's heart attack and Ambros has been pointedly sending her account books for her Namornese estates. Sandry has been neglecting the hell out of those, and misses the fact that the Empress of Namorn has been financially squeezing Landreg to try to force Sandry back to Namorn.
Sandry has also been largely completed separated from Briar, Tris, and Daja for almost two full years by the opening of this book, since they went off to travel with their teachers and she stayed. She's had contact with Lark, but even that dropped significantly once Sandry moved into the Duke's Citadel.
Given all of that and two years of personal growth and change, when our four protagonists reunite in the house Daja buys for them, they collectively seize up in self-consciousness and shame and uncertainty. Plus seriously powerful ambient magic. Which literally everyone with eyes (except our protagonists) can see is a bad thing. So to kill two birds with one stone, Duke Vedris asks Briar, Tris, and Daja to go with Sandry to Namorn as basically bodyguards. The background hope is that the four of them get to know each other again and find their equilibrium.
With a lot of yelling and a distinct lack of talking, they set off to Namorn.
Which is when we really get off to the races, because the lack of talking means that Briar hasn't told the girls he's dealing with PTSD from the war in Gyongxe; Daja hasn't said she is dealing with abandoment issues, figuring out her own sexuality, and having helped kill a friend who had killed a lot of people by setting fires; Tris hasn't told anyone that she developed a skill that kills or drives mad 99.99% of all mages who try it and the whole Ghost-is-Jack-the-Ripper thing in Tharios; and Sandry...well, I love our girl, but she's dealing with a combination of inheritance and political machinations, her crippling terror of another family member dying on her watch, and the fact that she actively chose to rip three people to shreds to save Pasco's life. So everybody has big feelings and nobody is dealing with them or communicating effectively. Which, again, is a GREAT combination with the phenomenal cosmic powers.
This is a Sandry-centric book, but as we did with Sandry's Book, we also get a metric ton of the other three as well, because as they did in Sandry's Book, they're coming together as a unit. Trying very, very hard to prevent that are Berenene dor Ocmor, Empress of Namorn and her court mages, Ishabal Ladyhammer and Quenaill Sheildsman. They are trying to either recruit or get rid of four legendarily powerful mages. The recruiting goes...poorly. For a variety of reasons. The getting rid of goes WORSE.
Part of the recruiting scheme for Sandry specifically includes a himbo husband that Berenene can boss around to her heart's content. The approved suitors are Jakuben fer Pennun, who had himbo down pat, and Finlach fer Hurich, who was less himbo and more goldigging asshole with an influential uncle. Finlach ends up leaping SO FAR over the line that Berenene has to slap him down so hard that his entire life is ruined.
Then we come to Pershan fer frickin' Roth. Even if you take the Namornese tradition of kidnapping brides into account, Shan takes the whole thing to another level because his ass makes Sandry feel SAFE and WANTED and VALUED AS A PERSON before turning around and kidnapping her in a trap tailor-made for subduing even a very powerful stitch witch. Literally this man is the worst and he deserved so much worse than he got.
Overall, this book is about reconnection and remembering that some bonds are deeper than two-year world tours. It's also about seeing your siblings as their whole selves and accepting them, warts and all, because they are the people you love and who love you back. This is one of my favorite Circle Universe books, and I think it is objectively the best Sandry book and the best "all four of us are here" book in the Circle universe.
This book also objectively heavier than the Circle of Magic and Circle Opens quartets. It's still technically YA, but it's the 16-19 end of YA more than the 13-15 end, given that it deals with not only PTSD and trauma, but also sexual assault and kidnapping, so take care if you aren't in a headspace for those topics. The book will still be there, and taking care of yourself in your book choices comes first, always.

Poking at my to-read list
One of these days I'll finally decide to read "The Will of the Empress" by Tamora Pierce, but I've been dragging my feet on it because I'm gonna have to slog through my favorite mages being young adults and trying to remember how to deal with each other after years apart and being stupid about it, while they deal with varying degrees of trauma from past events. Also Sandry (as a young-adult noblewoman AND Empress Berenene's cousin) is gonna get piping hot NEW trauma from bride-kidnapping. But the Emelan series is one of my favorite worlds since it's a very Mediterranean-themed setting, and Briar and Daja are POC. Someone use telepathy to send me the ending, where they finally stop assuming the worst of each other and get the fuck out of Namorn. 😭

Some thoughts after reading The Will of the Empress:
Sorry for the lack of a cut, mobile problems.
I'm reading this in publication order, so when Briar started having nightmares about something I didn't know about, I was very confused. Since there haven't previously been big Noodle Incidents like that in this series, I thought for sure I'd mixed up the order of the books. I bet this would've been less confusing if I were reading the books closer to when they'd been published.
Overall, though, this one definitely is one of my favorites of the series! It's less formulaic than the previous books, and since they're all eighteen or so in this one I'm having fewer "children don't act like that" moments. I very much missed Lark and Rosethorn though - of course I want more about the queer polyamorous foster mothers, you know?
But these kids are really really coming into their own in this one. I absolutely loved how all their personalities have developed, and how they're still the same people but changed. Tris trying so goddamn hard to be kind but not to let anyone see it, Sandry being as mulish as ever and it being a Problem sometimes, Briar being an honest and forthright womanizer, Daja realizing she's QUEER!!! I was constantly hugging my library copy of the book and whispering "my babies."
The plot in and of itself was definitely engaging as well - Empress Berenene is indeed a formidable enemy, and while of course it's always pretty understandable that the kids will come out on top in the end, there is a good enough amount of tension to keep pulling the story along. My favorite part was definitely the characters, but that's pretty standard for me.
My main problem with the story was, as it has been a few times with this series, the treatment of mentally ill people. Hi, Tamora, mentally ill people do read and love your books, could you please stop treating us like such an Other? Tris's response to Zhegorze's scars was especially frustrating and hurtful, but the overall discussion of how Zhegorze isn't *truly* mentally ill and that's what makes him okay, and various other things...yeah. Not great.
I don't know enough about real-world cultures similar to Namornese culture to comment on whether the portrayal was up to snuff. Obviously on its surface I'm appalled by things like marriage-by-kidnapping, but is the way it's portrayed in the book anything like how it is in real life? I have no idea.
Overall I loved this book, and I'm honestly considering rereading it already. I want to hug all these kids, be friends with them, etc. I love Emelan so much.

I am going to read this but I need a place to put my minimal knowledge of how Farming Doesn’t Work Like That.
#1: I have never met a hen who would give you more than one peck when you reach under her for her eggs. It’s a gentle peck, too. Generally they give you a warning bawwwwk and fluff their feathers up, and do absolutely nothing as you root around and tickle their toes trying to make sure you got all the eggs.
(They will indeed try to hatch anything, though, golf balls included. If you want them to nest somewhere in particular, you leave a golf ball there and they go, oh, egg, this must be our egg place, even after they’ve watched you take all the eggs except the golf ball out of it. Anyway, if you want them to hatch an egg, you wait until they get broody and then mark the eggs you want to hatch, fish all of them out, and put the marked ones back.)
#2: You don’t make it as a farmer if you’re not willing to let baby animals die. For one, that’s what chickens DO. It’s their one great skill. Chicks just die. Fully grown chickens die horribly in depressing ways. Once a chick has made up its mind to die from something, there is nothing you can do to stop it, and you’ll save yourself a lot of sleep, energy, and heartbreak if you just let it go. Also? You learn to kill them yourself. Slaughter season is for lambs in the spring and calves and pigs in the fall. I’ve never actually slaughtered animals myself, but you can’t raise animals as a farmer without being able to both watch them die, and slaughter them.
This does not preclude having a special bond with animals you select to be survivors.
#3: If your farm has that many varmints, you need a farm cat. Those things will get in all your produce and ruin it. Poop in whatever they don’t eat. Get a cat. Get a cat that won’t have kittens on you, whether that’s because it’s fixed, or male, or there are no male cats anywhere around and you’re somehow certain that one isn’t going to wander by in the night. If your cat is able to have kittens, it can and it will and then you’ll have an entire colony all of a sudden, all of them having kittens, and all of a sudden you’re not wondering why anyone would drown a litter of kittens anymore. See also: Berenene in the Queen’s Thief series.
I have no idea whether animals generally throw more female than male. It seems reasonable that they ought to, females are more useful, but humans skew pretty even. I am not sure if this line is more Tumblr Farming this person has learned, or an actual thing, or something they made up to avoid the harsh reality that you cull a lot of male animals when you farm. (Slaughter season!)
#4: Again, I am on shaky ground with this, but... you raise a wild animal among humans, and then release it into the wild? You probably gave it a death sentence. A long, slow death. It doesn’t know how to fend for itself, and it thinks humans are its friends right up until they shoot it point-blank. There have got to be ways to do it responsibly, zoo conservation problems have to know something, but this subject was covered in the Bambi books. Exception: the horrible tomcat we had when I was a tiny child, who would have hunted and killed me given half an unattended moment.
#5: If there’s a hawk around, chickens don’t keep scratching in the yard. They make a horrible racket and take cover underneath something, and they keep making that racket until the hawk goes away. It makes holding zoom meetings a bit of a struggle.
#6: Uh. I’m not a farmer. I’ve just raised a few different kinds of animals. I just live in Appalachia, and maybe I’m biased by being surrounded by a long and vainglorious history of subsistence farming. But most farmers I know could get a great deal of use out of a fortune in gold. Like, uh, any other occupation in the world.
#7: Not about farming, and I’m even farther out of my wheelhouse here, but I’m pretty sure people didn’t do gold leaf on armor? I am pretty sure it was gold inlay? or etching? Peter Morwood would know more.
#8: I am on firmer ground with dogs than most other things, and a dog would not put her puppies on a dragon unless they were pretty old puppies. If nothing else, a dog wants a cave to whelp in. Dragonback =/= cave.
#9: I have never successfully hatched a chick by leaving the egg on the counter in a warm place. I’ve cracked embryos out of eggs from the fridge, though, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it got pretty far along. I’ve also peeled the eggshell back from an almost-fully-formed chick that was never going to make it out of the egg because... the incubator wasn’t the exact right temperature? It missed being turned one time? Chickens are picky, and they like to die on you. Horribly, whenever possible.
Bonus: I did in fact not know that chickens are mostly putting eggs under their chests! I mean, obviously I did know, I’ve fished around under enough of them. And it makes sense, gives them a place to push a fresh one out of their cloaca. But I’d never put two and two together.

Look the Will of the Empress has its problems as all books do but the beauty of Berenene, while scheming to keep Sandry in Namorn, being like 'Sandry isn't interested in marrying a dude? How about a lady? I have a lot of hot ladies in my court, we can work with that' is still fabulous

Inktober 2017 Day 18: Filthy Eighteenth we have Briar and Empress Berenine in The Will of the Empress by tamorapierce. Despite his fancy garb, this prompt is for Briar! The street rat made wealthy mage! But as he would say, he’s still most comfortable grubby in the dirt with the plants he’s magically connected to. This scene  also has the Empress Berenene, surprising Briar by getting her royal hands filthy in the greenhouse. Reference: Bob Morley as Briar Moss I’ll do proper scans of all the drawings once the month is done. ❤︎

@buckysl3ftarm (Thanks, man!) tagged me to name my ten favorite female characters from 10 different fandoms and tag ten people to do the same, so here goes…
1. Lord of the Rings: Eowyn. I can’t count how many times I’ve read these books, from the time I was nine to now, and every time I find more of myself in her. A lot of feminist fantasy writers have spoken against the ending Tolkien gave her, but marrying Faramir and living in peace and among growing things was what she needed. I have struggled with depression almost my whole life, and her finding hope in evil, despair, and “the end of all things” has given me hope.
2. DC: Wonder Woman. Just...Wonder Woman.
3. PJO: Annabeth Chase. Percy Jackson does not deserve this girl, and he would be the first to admit it. She’s the Odysseus of the series, the wily, ambitious strategist and unparalleled fighter, and she looks fabulous while she’s doing it.
4. Arrowverse: Sara Lance/White Canary. Man, I did not realize how badly I wanted to see a kick-ass bi woman until I saw her. She’s snarky, one of the greatest fighters on the planet, and an awesome leader.
5. Young Justice: Artemis Crock. This woman literally went back into the life she swore to leave behind, in deep cover no less - if she died there, Kaldur wasn’t going to break cover to return her to Wally. We don’t see anything of how she proved herself to Manta’s organization, Deathstroke in particular, but whatever she did worked because both Manta and Deathstroke speak to her with nothing but respect. And by the way, who took the latter out so M’gann could impersonate him in Summit? Probably Artemis.
6. Harry Potter: Narcissa Malfoy. Oh man, Narcissa is such an awesome example of Slytherin House and witches in general. She cares about so few people, but those few she loves with a passion strong enough to move mountains and overthrow regimes.
7. Sherlock: Mrs. Hudson. I want to adopt her to be the grandma that I drink with.
8. Doctor Who: Amy Pond. She’s quirky, she’s tough, and she believes so deeply. I loved her arc with Eleven, and I love how much she loves Rory but doesn’t define herself relative to him.
9. Hamilton: Angelica Schuyler. “Some men say that I’m intense or I’m insane. You want a revolution? I want a revelation.” “And when I meet Thomas Jefferson, I’mma compel him to include women in the sequel. Work!”
10. Voltron: Katie Holt/Pidge Gunderson. In the ten episodes I’ve seen so far, this girl breaks every rule to do what she believes needs to be done and kicks major ass doing it.
Honorable mentions: Circle of Magic - Daja, Tris, Sandry, Evvie, Rosethorn, Lark, Empress Berenene. Song of the Lioness/Tortall - Alanna, Mrs. Cooper, Daine, Buri, Thayet, Kitten (kind of), Kel, Shang Wildcat, Lalasa, Aly, Dove, Ochobu, Shang Unicorn. White Collar - El Burke, Sara.
I’m tagging @imnotafan, @camsthisky, @obaewankenope, @alyss-spazz-penedo, @fuyunoakegata, and @galahadwilder.
