Belarus is a character that I dislike in canon. Hima did her dirty :(

So here are some headcanons I have for Belarus <3

Her human name is Natallia Arloŭskaja/Arlievič (the last option is gender neutral)

Her nyo! name would be Mikalaj Arloŭskij/Arlievič

Has a complicated relationship with Russia

She is not his sister. I don't think nations are related to each other. Sure, nations can call each other "brother" or "sister", but because they are close to each other and have no romantic feelings, not because they are genetically related.

Perhaps she had a close relationship with him in the past and called him "brother" during that time. But nowadays their relationship is more complicated.

Belarus is extremely worried about her language, as it's getting more and more russified over time.

She is very protective of her own culture and tries to preserve it as much as possible.

She could have been close to Lithuania, as she was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (I need to do more research about this though...)

I know little about Belarus' history, but she is an interesting character! I will probably talk more about her in the future

The more I think about it, the more I believe it had to be SO common for female nations to crossdress in order to not be discriminated against. There were obviously some points in history where it was “”okay”” for them to be females with power, but at some point or another, they had to pretend to be male. And now I’m tearing up thinking about how these ladies must’ve felt when they were finally able to present as themselves (or maybe some preferred being male, that’s equally as interesting).

And yes I watched Barbie so now I’m contemplating womanhood and I’m in my hetalia brainrot again and I always get so intrigued by the female nations and how hard it must’ve been for them to just exist. “What was I made for” indeed. 😭

Legend of Zelda: Fantasy aspects, swordfighting, fairies, plot, pretty art styles, unique characters, fairy tale vibes, puzzle solving.

Fire Emblem: Strategy game, basically like playing chess with a plot, medieval elements, magical creatures, etc.

Endless Ocean: Diving for treasure, sunken ruins, beautiful underwater locations, exploring, lots of animals, a mythology filled plot and lots of legend-based side quests, sailing.

Animal Crossing: Gardening, designing a town, cute animals, relaxing, a way to visit friends. He plays with Alfred, Kiku, Natalya, and several other nations. Let's be honest, a lot of them probably like this game.

Witch's House: Witches, fairy tale like, puzzle solving, creepy atmosphere, unsettling plot twist, he gets to laugh every time America is jumpscared.

Ib: Interesting mystery and story, puzzle solving, creepy atmosphere, multiple intriguing endings, he gets to laugh every time America is jumpscared.

Catherine: Puzzle game, entertaining story, dramatic, nice ambience, fun to dissect and discuss the characters and details.

Smash: He's competitive and likes taking the opportunity to try and beat the others, what can I say? Mains Link and Pit.

Hima got Belarus so wrong

The reason Hima thinks Nat wants to marry him basically boils down to a failed attempt by Lukashenko to position himself to take power over the whole shebang after Yeltsin. At worst she should be marrying him to control him. Not because she admires him. But that should be out of character for Belarus, who should be a kind, easygoing, even mousy girl. She doesn't speak up, doesn't talk back, shouldn't even raise her voice very often. I hear from Belarusians all the time about how placid and sweet their countrymen are. There's even a word for it, памярко́ўнасць, which literally translates to 'tolerance'. So if she's just a sweet little timid girl who acts more like Liechtenstein than the Belarus we know from canon, don't even get me started on how wrong, wrong, wrong LietBel is. Toris has been her protector, her jailer, her hero, and her tyrant but never her simp.

Heavy hands fall to Nikolai’s side. He can feel that familiar cold, dead feeling rush through his forearms and into his hands as his blood fills his veins again. Having your arms up for so long, holding something so heavy up off the ground can leave you feeling weak.

Having let go of the weight, he looms over the crumpled remains of another man’s body. His adrenaline fades as quickly as it came and suddenly he can feel the sting of the cut across his chest. It’s deep but he hardly notices it anymore. It blends to the rest of the scars covering his body. “Pathetic.” He spits, the wet clump splattering over the man’s blue face.

He expected you to be scared, but when he saw that bottom lip of yours quiver at the sight of him, he felt the torment. “What did you do?” You asked, but Nikolai couldn’t find the words. “Oh god.” You looked sick, you looked like you could vomit from the sight ahead of you at any moment. “He was dangerous. He got up and was following you I couldn’t just let him-“ he was cut off by your shriek. “you’re fucking dangerous!” Those words cut deeper than the man, lying dead on the floor, could ever cut him. “I’m not, I’m not dangerous, I’d never hurt you.”

“Who even are you?” That’s right. It suddenly dawned on him. He spent so much time watching you, only engaging in small ways that he never took the time to think that you didn’t know him. That was fixable.

You struggled so hard, your tears filling your eyes to the brim, large streaks of the salty liquid fell down your cheeks as Nikolai pressed his body into your, your back pinned to the wall behind you, his knee trapping your legs apart from each other. He leaned over your shorter frame. “I did it to save you. Calm down.” He sneered, almost annoyed at the commotion you were making but when you let loose a scream, his gloved hand grabbed your wrists and dragged them over your head. His other hand covered your mouth. “Calm. Down.” He demanded, his icy blue eyes locked with yours. As you breathed deeply through your nose, you whimpered as his hand grabbed your cheeks tightly. “Don’t you think you should say thank you?” He muttered, his gaze following the tears that coated your eyelashes. He’s in awe of your effortless allure. He can feel his heart rate pick back up, his urge to touch you becoming stronger with every passing moment. “I’m going to take my hand off your mouth. Don’t scream.” The fear in your face said it all, you wouldn’t make a sound. Such a good girl for him. His hand slipped off your mouth, he caught the leather glove on his hand between his teeth and pulled his long, slender fingers from them. You shake and tremble as you watch him, watching as he glances from your eyes to your reddened lips. His ring and middle fingers slipped between your lips, the tips of his fingers running over your tongue. “So warm.” Nikolai hummed. His eyes practically rolling to the back of his head as he felt up your wet mouth. You gag and cough as he slides them too far to the back of your throat. Nikolai’s elated, you can tell from the blush tinting his cheeks.

The man who, using his pure strength, held a man up and choked him til he lost his life, was thrusting his fingers in your mouth. He smirked to himself and bit his lip. You were being violated by him. Only him. He was the only one allowed to touch you, look at you, talk to you, breathe the same air as you, smell you…only him, this stranger who fell in love…no, this sick twisted attraction to you. You were too scared of him to fight back any more. “You’re such a good girl.” His body relaxed, leaning over you in a more comfortable posture. Your lips latched around his fingers and he practically moaned. “That’s my girl.” His chest rises and falls quickly, but his expression is cool as he watches you suck at his skin. “My girl.”

Ivan Braginsky from Hetalia absolutely has scary dog privilege and his sisters 1000% use that to their advantage in modern times when even the youngest of the family isn’t scary enough to detour unwanted attention.

The other nations, especially Alfred, think it’s funny because this man doesn’t normally touch Alt fashion all that much and is only visually intimidating because of his height on a good day.

Mans deadass is a somewhat baby faced, 6 foot 10 inch tall, “built like a brick shit house” muscular man who’s got cannon combat/war time experience but the fashion sense of what can be best described as “Pastel Househusband/Babushka”. Ivan “I knit cute sweaters for fun” Braginsky has mastered the hidden art of controlling a resting bitch face because he’s known his baby sister her whole life and just happened to pick it up at some point in their childhood.

Hetalia Characters as different Teachers (baltics/eastern europe)

based on my experiences as someone in the education field (ALSO doing this in groups so it's not HUGE)

Poland: MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE. i think he can take it and dish it out, like he does not care. he does have a softer spot for the shy kids and tries his best to help them work thru socially anxious moments

Lithuania: he gives me...... AP Euro/world history vibes, definitely coaches basketball. i think his pedagogy is largely based on "every student has the ability to achieve" and holds each of his students to high expectations

Estonia: at first i was like "omg calculus, NERD" but i thought abt it again, he's a music teacher, no doubt. specifically elementary school, and he runs an after school choir program.

Latvia: TOUGH ONE. i think........ i think i see him like....... middle school orchestra. he always gave me cello vibes. he has to work really hard on his classroom management since he practically looks their age

Belarus: girly is middle school math. nothing gets to her. she is made of steel. she definitely comes more alive when she's coaching girls' volleyball

So, what are the Male Nyotalia counterparts supposed to be like?

I'm aware that canonically, the Nyotalia counterparts are pretty much irrelevant to the series and were probably made for fun, but this has been bugging me for a while.

So, canonically, the female Nyos have personalities that are separate from their male counterparts. For example, Nyo!England is a "Kuudere" instead of a "Tsundere", Nyo!Russia is "emotionally unstable" instead of "childishly cruel", Nyo!France is more argumentative and protective of Canada, and Nyo!China is supposedly more difficult to read emotionally than China.

Female Nyos are also "stronger than their male counterparts." Nyo!Italy, Nyo!Romano, Nyo!America and Nyo!Germany are all total badasses and, according to Hima, "Hetalia with female Italy would not exist because she would keep beating everyone up."

We have all this info about the girls, but...what about the guys?

All we have are the canon designs, but no info on their personalities.

So I've been theorizing a bit. Let's say that the Nyos, regardless of gender, are meant to be stronger than their counterparts. With that in mind, would that make Nyo!Wy less of a Tsundere, or make Nyo!Belgium less insecure about his looks? With the way Hima writes his female characters, who are generally meant to be stronger than his male characters, this wouldn't make much sense.

I think a more likely theory is that the male Nyos are actually weaker and/or more soft-spoken in comparison to their female counterparts. I like to imagine that their personalities are like that of the first drafts of the original female characters (which would make sense in Nyo!Hungary's case since Hungary was originally going to be male and a pervert). But outside of that, perhaps Nyo!Belgium is all happy-go-lucky to compensate for low self-esteem? Is Nyo!Wy is a bit more aggressive and headstrong but secretly lonely (kinda like Ladonia)? Maybe Nyo!Belarus is more of a shy, mild-mannered Tsundere who mutters under his breath like how Belarus was originally meant to.

With that idea in mind, what do you guys think the Nyo!Guys' personalities would be like? I'm more than happy to hear your ideas, so please feel free to share(＾-＾)

Update: I forgot to include Nyo!Monaco, turns out he actually has a personality (against all odds😅).

"He's said to be strong, a gourmet, and enjoy driving, but he's rather bad at gambling despite the prevalence of casinos in Monaco. He owns a Japanese-style garden and has a weird, but good relationship with France, despite the one fight that they had (two days after the fight he said "It’s no good without big brother France" and they seem to have made up.) We can see here that Nyo!Monaco, while being considered "pretty strong", is still a lot more meek and soft-spoken compared to his female counterpart. Versus Monaco herself, who makes it abundantly clear from the moment you meet her that she bends backward for no one.

Belarus' human name

Shout out to @/belarusismymom (tiktok), as this post is inspired by one of their tiktoks.

So... In canon, Belarus is called Natalya or Natalia. But actually, that is not accurate, as that is a name that is more Russian than Belarusian.

How can we name her instead?

We can call her Natallia (in honor to the Belarusian poetess Natallia Arsenneva), and her surname would be Arloŭskaja (instead of Arlovskaya).

For her nyo! version, his name could be Mikalaj Arloŭskij (which is more accurate)

These are small changes, but I think it improves the character. Small details like these make characters memorable and more enjoyable, at least that is what I think.

Besides, Belarusian is becoming more and more Russified, and even though I love Russian culture, the Belarusian language is crucial for their culture as well, and sadly it can disappear if it keeps being heavily Russified.

When They Wake Up vs When They Go To Bed:

Kiku: He seems like an early riser. Probably wakes up anywhere from 5-7 AM and goes for a walk or takes care of household chores like cleaning. Goes to bed around 8 or 9 PM.

Alfred: He thinks he's a morning person as long as he drinks coffee, but he'll definitely sleep in when he doesn't have anything to do. Tries to go to bed anywhere from 11 PM to 2 AM. If he goes to bed later it's because he got distracted scrolling through his phone or had too many Thoughts™. His phone feels like a necessity in order to avoid these thoughts, though. Usually he tries finding a topic to fixate on for when he sets his phone down, hoping he'll fall asleep before he can have a chance to think too much about anything else, as he doesn't want to end up spiralling into anxiety from being left alone with himself or paranoia encouraged by the dark. Sometimes his stomach decides to mess with his plans and make him hungry in the middle of the night.

Arthur: What even is this man's schedule. He'll sleep in any chance he gets, but often ends up having to force himself to wake up early when he has things to do. He'll go to bed anywhere from 12 AM to 5 AM because he feels like he can be at peace and better concentrate, which makes him more productive. Besides, like Alfred, he enjoys having something to focus on until he's too tired to do anything but fall asleep, as he's also prone to over-analysation. The hour he retires changes practically every night, and it's not uncommon to see dark circles under his eyes. He's very much a night person and society makes him suffer for it.

Francis: HE. GETS. HIS. BEAUTY. SLEEP. He likes to pamper himself before bed with a nice glass of wine and maybe some cheese, a sweet fruit, and some bread or crackers. After that he'll do a little casual painting to relax, make sure all his pillows are fluffed, take off his clothes, then snuggle into the covers by 11 PM. Wakes up around 9 AM.

Natalya: If she can't sleep (she can't), she'll go downstairs and watch the TV static for hours. Sometimes a whole night will go by this way and she'll end up passing out on the couch in the morning instead. When she lived with several other nations, she would wander between the rooms to make sure everyone was in place, sleeping, or at least not causing any trouble. She pretty much just rests for small periods at a time.

Forgot if I said this before, but I headcanon Belarus as sex positive (grey-)asexual. She rarely, almost never feels sexual attraction, but does sleep with a partner sometimes when she’s in a relationship. But, instead of penetrative sex she prefers to engage in kink as a form of intimacy and to experience controlled physical contact with her partner that she otherwise usually doesn’t feel the need for, except for the occasional handholding.
