It's wild to me how some people think a bottom England that is simply masculine/not super uke-y bottom counts as UKUS.
USUK fans, you are allowed to have a masculine and assertive England if you want! That doesn't make it UKUS, that just means your USUK has variety? 😆 That it's not a stereotype?
Every time someone like this mentions UKUS, it gets my hopes up, but then they turn around and say, "Well, actually, when it comes to the smut part I want USUK..." And I realise that no, you're not a fellow UKUS fan. You're just a USUK fan who likes England to have a little more agency and control. 😆
It's valid to have that preference, but don't make it sound like something it's not, please. It's still USUK.

Usuk or ukus?
UKUS hands down. I became wary of USUK a long time ago after being exposed to too many flanderised caricatures of Arthur and Alfred. Sometimes they'd be based almost entirely off bedroom role stereotypes, sometimes they'd seem like a bitter old boomer couple stereotype, and sometimes they'd be an OC/self-insert in disguise. Often, these three things would overlap.
I'll still look at USUK if the concept seems interesting or it's depicted by someone I trust to do their personalities justice, but in general I just feel more comfortable with UKUS since I find that their chemistry and characterisations are consistently a lot more believable. They're not so forced to adhere to a strict set of stereotypes, either, which is nice.
In terms of the actual, basic physical stuff? Arthur topping and Alfred bottoming is simply more enjoyable in my opinion. They can absolutely still vary who takes charge, but Arthur will usually penetrate and Alfred will almost usually be penetrated.

There is a tragic lack of white-eyed nyo England. I decided to rectify that with a collage, because she deserves them just as much as male England! 😤
Tumblr media
I must humbly request that other nyo England fans depict her with white eyes more often as well. It's very fun to see and fun to draw. 😆

It's true, England and America ARE like family.

In the way friends and spouses are like family, that is.

LET. WOLF. ALFRED. BE. GOOFY. 🤪
Wolves are silly, adorable creatures with a lot of similar traits to dogs. They're not just "the big bad wolf" you see in cartoons.
Therefore, wolf Alfred can be silly and adorable, too!

Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?*
USUK and FrUK. Okay, not completely, USUK is literally one of my favourites and I like FrUK on occasion. But I chose these because sometimes for something to be ruined it had to have potential in the first place, right?
And well, certain sides of them got ruined.
For USUK, I find it hard to like bottom England/top America because of the characterisation that often comes with it. That isn't to say the characterisation is always bad, but I've been exposed to enough bad depictions that I have a very low tolerance for this particular dynamic – or bottom England in general, for any ship.
For FrUK, there was a time when Jeanne D'Arc was a very heavily focused on aspect of their history and relationship, and I just didn't care for it because it made it seem like Jeanne was the one France ACTUALLY wanted, which is fine if you're writing France x Jeanne, but if you're writing FrUK... you're not doing a good job of convincing me why France and ENGLAND should be together. This isn't a common issue anymore, but it's been replaced with something similar. Rather than Jeanne taking the focus, it's FACE family.
Can FrUK stand on its own without FACE? Because given how much FrUK stuff always has to involve America and Canada, I'm not convinced shippers are confident in France and England by themselves... 🤔
It's a shame, because as someone who does not and will never see America and Canada as their kids, it just makes it kind of hard to ship. And even if I did see America and Canada as their kids, who wants the kids around all the time?? Kind of kills the mood, doesn't it? 😅
Again, I still can enjoy both these ships. This is more just a critique of certain fanon aspects I don't like.

Most people acknowledge Arthur as the tsundere in his ships, but interestingly...quite a few of his ships actually have the other character possessing tsundere traits as well. 😆
USUK - Alfred rejects Arthur's offer to be friends, yet his bio says Arthur is one of his only friends. And how many times does Alfred make up silly excuses to hang out with Arthur just so he doesn't have to admit he likes it? "Oh, you were my first Twitter follower, that's why I want to wear matching Halloween costumes with you." "I prank you specifically every New Year because of this list of reasons that I'm pretending only you qualify for."
FrUK- They're both hostile and aggressive to each other, yet they have a weird sort of mutual respect and frenemy relationship.
PrUK- Gilbert talks a big talk, but he gets defensive and embarrassed pretty easily. ESPECIALLY in his past, like in his Teutonic priest days.
EngBela- While Natalya IS capable of forming friendships with others, she's fairly unfriendly towards anyone who isn't Russia.
Engmano- Self-explanatory. Everyone commonly labels the both of them as tsunderes.
SpUK- I'm not as familiar with this ship, but everyone focuses on the pirate rivalry stuff, sooo...they're usually portrayed as having tension with each other.

Arthur x Alfred is a ship that is surrounded by a river of lava and a forest of thorns.
The river of lava will INSIST with all its might that Arthur and Alfred have famiIiaI relations, and if you disagree then you may get attacked. But if you can make it past, you will reach the second obstacle.
The forest of thorns will tell you that this ship must have uwu tsun baby man Arthur and super inconsiderate, unpleasant Alfred. Do not be led astray by these words.
Proceed onwards and eventually you will discover a clearing in which exists a whole feast of thoughtful, fleshed out characterisations, creativity, and fun that can keep you fed for years.

More depictions of France seemingly admiring England–
Tumblr media
–and wanting to be viewed as special to him would be nice, too.
Tumblr media
FrUK is one of the most popular (and accepted) England ships, yet I don't seem to find much variety when it comes to characterisation. France almost always seems to be either confidently seductive or annoyed towards England.
Can we have more of France just being...oh, I don't know, cute? Excited? Flustered, even?
And then England is usually annoyed, annoyed, jealous, annoyed, insecure, secretly pining, annoyed, etc.
I want to see more of his playful side, more of his calm side, and less of him being frazzled by absolutely everything France does. I mean, I can think of canon examples where he's just being casual with him, so it's not like it could never happen.
Don't try to tell me I'm "wrong", as this is simply my experience. If you've seen content of them being portrayed as I've described wanting to see, just send it to me in the comments. 👀
