Alice Walker New Documentary ‘Beauty in Truth’

TALLAHASSEE, FL - PBS new documentary highlighting the life of Alice Walker, premiered in the later part of February during black history month. The Documentary  released in the mist of Walkers 70th birthday as a part of PBS’s American Masters series. Walker discuss the backlash she received for the film Color purple, Walker also discuss her role in the civil rights era.Walker who’s latest work “Warrior Marks,” a novel that sheds light on the issue of female genital mutilation in Africa. Has become a must read among the young generation. Walker says “I do feel it’s helpful if you’re thinking about the coming generations to leave your work in a form that people can relate to”.

Pratibha Parmar the film director for PBS’s American Masters series. Focused on the Pulitzer Prize winner Walker service during the civil rights era. Parmer herself had to admit that she was in awe with the fact that she was interviewing Walker. Parmer said “It seemed crazy not to have a film on Alice, given the impact she’s had with her life and her writing,” Parmar said.

The documentary also featured walker’s award winning novel the color purple. Backlash that she received about her portrayal of the black man, resulting in protest and ongoing criticism. Walkers rocky relationship with her daughter is also disused in the documentary. Walker said” It feels like ignorance and ignorance is our greatest adversary,” she said of the cruel criticism. “I think The Color Purple is so bursting with love, the need for connection, the showing of the need for connection about the globe.”Interviews from Steven Spielberg the director of the color purple film, Danny Glover Actor in the film and record produce Quincy Jones rounded out the documentary.
