North of Everywhere and Nightfall, headland, home by Dorinda, collected in a cute little A6 tête-bêche hardback.

The cover paper is marbled and the book cloth baby blue to match for a bright sunny seascape mood. The endpapers are Notpla 140gsm and are made with seaweed! Recycleable and biodegradable. Fun fact: when applying paste to this paper to prepare to paste the ends down to the case, the little dark flecks of seaweed in the paper turn bright green. :D I’m ridiculously excited to have found a use for this paper, I bought ten sheets (minimum order) out of curiosity and then was a bit stumped, but it’s got a great texture and thickness and I’m a little in love with it.

The fics are BBC Shetland, Jimmy/Duncan, one of which I’ve read and loved and the other I haven’t yet but now that they’re bound together I’ve no excuse to not dive right in.

Win: she's incredibly chuffed that Caroline was in Coronation Street. The whole family sat and watched *The New Worst Witch* and Fred will never ever, ever admit to how flustered he was by the Miss Hardbroom costume.

Sam: would have much preferred Jack to have played Batman, but omfg young Alfred Pennyworth will do, that's phenomenal.

Joan: she and Sam watched s3 of Shetland and s2 of Guilt. Their parents are banned from seeing either. She is rather jealous of Sara's accent.

Fred: "Oh for goodness' sake, why couldn't Roger be playing a Labour minister instead?!" "To be fair, Dad, I can absolutely imagine you declaring that you're bored of this and are going for a Twix." "What has Morse been telling yoooou... HANG ON THAT LIBERAL MAN LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE A MAN THAT TRIED TO KILL ME!" "WHO TRIED TO KILL YOU, FRED, AND WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME!??!" Anyway, they all watched that Globe *Tempest* together, and Joan refrained heroically from making pointed comments about Prospero's behaviour with Miranda re Ferdinand (at least Roger's Prospero is a lot less... weird about his daughter than some). Win absolutely doesn't have a crush on both Douglas Richardson and Antoine Verlaque, shut up. Fred's been humming "Stars" from Les Mis under his breath at work and it's driving Morse absolutely mad.

i think my favourite jimmy/meg moments in shetland were that bit where they hugged for no reason? or, you know, raised a child together? or where she lived with him for several seasons? or when they cooked together in their shared house or that bit where he gave her ALL his life savings to start a business just so she’d stay on the islands or - *takes deep breath* - possibly the time where he put his whole CAREER on the line to keep her out of jail and then she literally went to the station and turned herself in just to keep him out of trouble and then WENT TO PRISON for him? wasn’t that amazing? what a well-written ship i’m so glad they’re canon. wait

I do love the fact that I'm among quite a lot of fans of British police procedural shows and books (and adjacent genres) who share some or all of the following opinions:-

the police in real life are obviously appalling

so these characters, even when they're fucking up massively and behaving reprehensibly, are still generally unrealistically well-intentioned, compassionate, and competent (in some stories, some of them grapple with colleagues who are more true-to-life, and a lot of drama hangs in that)

all of which is good because otherwise I would not enjoy this genre

but it's so very important to remember that difference because otherwise we end up being far too lenient with real-life police

anyway, I love these characters and because they are decent (if flawed) human beings the job is badly traumatising them, so I would really like them outta there

retirement and/or different jobs for all please so they can thrive and be their best selves!

also hugs which in some cases they keep refusing to give each other which is very annoying

hooray for fanfic which can provide the required different careers and hugs etc.. <3

A tunnel to crawl through - (OFMD, Ed/Stede) Blackbeard swings down from the rigging onto the deck, slashes, parries, meets each piece of steel that flashes toward him with his own. Meets flesh with steel too.

It's misery loves you - (OFMD, Ed/Stede, Izzy POV) Blackbeard is himself again. He is more than himself. More ruthless, more vicious, more magnificent. Not a trace of that namby-pamby fucker in the pink gown.

The calm before the aftermath - (Shetland, Jimmy/Duncan) When Jimmy catches him up, Duncan is in the kitchen standing at the island with a bottle of whisky in his hand and two glasses in front of him on the worktop.

Forgot to bend - (Shetland, Jimmy/Duncan) Everything, including his own body, feels far away; as if he’s no longer fully tethered to the earth.

A fist-full of sand - (Shetland, Jimmy/Duncan) The house is empty when Jimmy finally gets home, silent, but not quite dark; the long twilight filtering through the window shades as the season marches on toward summer.
