#battle of buena vista

One of the treasures in the collection of the Ross County Historical Society is a hand-painted banner on silk. In 1848, presidential candidate Zachary Taylor visited Chillicothe to campaign. The organizers of the event offered an incentive to the township which sent the largest number of people to the rally - this beautifully painted banner. The Whig organization in Liberty Township was the winner.
The image shows Zachary Taylor at the Battle of Buena Vista, a conflict he won with a force of 5,000 men against an army from Mexico thrice its size. Across the bottom of the banner is painted his slogan from the battle. Standing beside Taylor is Colonel Jefferson Davis, future president of the Confederate States of America, and Major William Bliss, the general’s chief of staff.
Unfortunately, the delicate condition of the original doesn’t allow it to be displayed at this time, so we had a replica made for display. That’s the one at the top of the first photo.

Meet Team Atlantis
Find out cool facts about the brave explorers who go in search of the lost city of Atlantis!
In 1914, a young adventurer named Milo Thatch dreamed of completing his grandfather's quest to find the legendary lost city of Atlantis. Though some people thought Milo was crazy, a wealthy businessman agreed to sponsor Milo's expedition. Milo joined a group of daredevil explorers on a dangerous mission that took them under the sea and to the center of the Earth.
MILO JAMES THATCH Team position: Linguist, major brainiac. Age: 32. Birthplace: Fishkill, New York. Education: Earned doctorate degrees in linguistic theory and dead languages from Oxford University in England. Major accomplishments: Graduated from high school at age 11; ranked as one of the world's best linguists; translated ancient documents that reveal the location of Atlantis. Best trait: Milo never gives up. Worst trait: Love of work doesn't leave much time for a social life; best friend is his Persian cat, Fluffy. Secret dream: Milo's one and only dream is not so secret: Find Atlantis. Biggest fear: That he might be wrong—that Atlantis doesn't really exist.
LYLE TIBERIUS ROURKE Team position: Expedition commander, serious dude. Age: 54. Birthplace: Beaumont, Texas. Education: Graduated second in his class from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (in New York). Major accomplishments: Led the charge in tons of famous battles as an Army captain; won awards for leadership and heroism; saved the life of his commanding officer. Best trait: Total focus on his mission. Worst trait: A cruel streak—and quick temper! Both make him a little scary. Secret dream: To make lots of money. Biggest fear: That he might actually fail on a mission.
HELGA KATRINA SINCLAIR Team position: Second in command. Age: 30. Birthplace: Frankfurt, Germany. Education: Studied with famous martial arts and weapons experts around the world; trained in military tactics and firearms under Commander Rourke. Major accomplishments: One of only three living people to beat Commander Rourke in both unarmed combat and chess. Best trait: Intelligent and cool under pressure. Worst trait: Can seem icy and unfriendly. Secret dram: To fight someone (or something) that's a real challenge. Biggest fear: What is fear?

Meet Team Atlantis
GAETAN MOLIÉRE Team position: Geologist, mineralogist, tunneling expert. Age: 39. Birthplace: Paris, France. Education: Became interested in tunneling by exploring the sewers beneath Paris as a kid; went to college at the Sorbonne; left school to become a miner. Major accomplishments: One of the world's best geologists; can tell where dirt is from by tasting it. Best trait: A master problem-solver and inventor. Worst trait: He likes dirt so much, he hardly bathes. Secret dream: To burrow to the center of the Earth. Biggest fear: Being forced to take a bath.
WILHELMINA BERTHA PACKARD Team position: Communications expert, chatterbox. Age: 61. Birthplace: Whippany, New Jersey. Education: Worked as a research assistant to several famous inventors—and married most of them (including Chichester Bell, cousin of telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell). Major accomplishments: Helped develop several major communications devices, including the radio, batteries and a "talking machine" (the ancestor to the CD player). Best trait: Unflappable sense of humor. Worst trait: Can be too chatty, even in the face of disaster. Secret dream: To finally find the love of her life. Biggest fear: Static.
AUDREY ROCIO RAMIREZ Team position: Mechanic, hothead. Age: 18. Birthplace: Dearborn, Michigan. Education: Began rebuilding engines in her father's car-repair shop at the age of 5; took a job at the Henry Ford Automotive Plant at the age of 9. Major accomplishments: Helped invent new gearing, steering and cooling systems for cars at Ford. Best trait: Spunky and smart. Worst trait: A short temper that gets even shorter when all the equipment keeps breaking down. Secret dream: To build a flying car. Biggest fear: That she'll get caught without her toolbox.
VINCENZO "VINNY" SANTORINI Team position: Demolitions, expert. Age: 38. Birthplace: Palermo, Italy. Education: Learned all about explosives on his own—and has a childhood full of blown up buildings to prove it. Major accomplishments: Can create the right kind of explosion for every occasion. Best trait: Stays relaxed, despite his dangerous job. Worst trait: A passion for practical jokes; seems to like blowing things up just a bit too much. Secret dream: To one day create the perfect explosion. Biggest fear: Working in the family business—a florist's shop!
DR. JOSHUA STRONGBEAR SWEET Team position: Medical officer. Age: 42. Birthplace: Bigelow, Kansas. Education: Earned degrees in medicine, botany (the study of plants) and herbology; learned Native American medicine from his uncle Iron Cloud, an Arapaho medicine man. Major accomplishments: Served as a battlefield surgeon with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders; treated soldiers on both sides. Best trait: Strong as a grizzly, gentle as a teddy bear. Worst trait: No one's found it yet. Secret dream: To find a cure for all diseases. Biggest fear: Small spaces.
"COOKIE" FARNSWORTH Team position: Cook. Age: 72. Birthplace: Tulsa, Oklahoma. Education: Served as a sharpshooter in the Civil War; became a U.S. Army cook, feeding hundreds with almost no supplies. Major accomplishments: Was General George Custer's personal chef; became a chef at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel; owned his own restaurant. Best trait: Can make shoe leather taste good—and he probably has. Worst trait: The military has made him tough—so complain about the food at your own risk! Secret dream: To invent something called "fast-food." Biggest fear: Running out of flour.

The complete list of films featured on this blog’s 2023 “31 Days of Oscar” marathon
Hello everyone,
Thank you once more for allowing me to present the annual marathon of Oscar-nominated films to your dashboards. This year, the films were grouped by genre or subgenre in primetime (5 PM Pacific into the night). This is the most exclusive period on this blog, as the selection of films that I can post and queue about is at its most limited. But at the same time, the blog is at its most accessible as this yearly marathon’s selection skew to more popular fare. I hope you enjoyed this year’s presentation of 31 Days of Oscar.
What follows is the exhaustive list of all 380 short- and feature-length films featured on this blog over the last thirty-one days for the 31 Days of Oscar marathon. This is down from last year’s record of 420. But that count remains only a fraction of the 5,019 films that have been nominated for Academy Awards since 1927.
Of those 380, 37 were short films (53 short films is the record, which was set last year). 343 were feature films.
BREAKDOWN BY DECADE 1927-1929: 6 1930s: 52 1940s: 53 1950s: 50 1960s: 37 1970s: 31 1980s: 25 1990s: 25 2000s: 27 2010s: 31 2020s: 50
TOTAL: 380
Year with most representation (2022 excluded): 1940 (11 films) Median year: 1967
Time for the list. 62 Best Picture winners and the one (and only) winner for Unique and Artistic Production that I featured this year are in bold. Asterisked (*) films are films I haven’t seen in their entirety as of the publishing of this post. Films primarily not in the English language are accompanied with their nation(s) of origin.

LAKE BUENA VISTA — Gov. Ron DeSantis’ handpicked board overseeing Disney World’s government services is gearing up for a potential legal battle over a 30-year development agreement they say effectively renders them powerless to manage the entertainment giant’s future growth in Central Florida.

OK but out of all the characters why do you think they chose Peggy - dresses in her ICONIC Agent Carter outfit for that little promo?
I actually have a little theory about it that I spent a half an hour ranting about to my mom, so thank you for giving me a chance to unleash it upon all of my beautiful followers!
Okay, so the announcement said that Rogers: The Musical would be a one-act production and because of CAL-OSHA regulations, the Hyperion Theatre in DCA cannot show anything longer than an hour. That means they'll have less than an hour to put on a show about Steve’s life, so I predict that they'll split the show into two parts: the 1940s and 2012.
It'll start with Steve receiving the serum/becoming Captain America and fast-track the events of The First Avenger with a musical number (similar to how Hamilton presents battles and passages of time through song); this is where I predict Peggy will have a thematically significant number, which is why I think they made the purposeful decision to use her in the marketing. The halfway point will have Steve being frozen and waking up in 2012, and I have a feeling that the second half of the show will be about him adapting to his new life/fast-tracking the events of The Avengers, culminating in the show-stopping finale "Save The City". (I have a hunch that Peggy might appear in this half of the show as some sort of figment of Steve’s imagination, perhaps as a visual representation of his inability to let go of his past).
I don't think that they'll show any events past the ending of the first Avengers film because anything after that is too convoluted to squeeze into an hour-long show/too many new characters would need to be introduced and "Save The City" is the only song that the audience is already familiar with, so they'll wanna end the show on the highest note possible. If anything, they might have a reprise of an earlier number with Steve and Peggy, where he acknowledges that he's where he needs to be and says goodbye to her (idk if they even wanna get into Peggy still being alive in 2012 or not lol).
This might be me being crazy or way too desperate for more Peggy Carter representation lol but I've got a gut-feeling that they didn't use Peggy in the marketing for nothing. Buena Vista Street and its surrounding area is modeled after 1920s Los Angeles, so the marketing team might’ve just thought "Well, Peggy Carter was in Los Angeles in 1947, wouldn't it be cute if we used her in the marketing?" but conversely, why didn't they have Clint and Kate there instead, since the musical was first depicted in their show? Definitely take all of this with a grain on salt, I'm just a Disney nerd with a degree in Performing Arts and History, but I definitely think that Peggy's inclusion was purposeful! 💖

"Anything you find weird, ugly, uncomfortable or disgusting on any medium will become a representative sign"
Definitely "A Goat" is not a skin for everyone, I noticed that most gamers and non-gamers alike didn't like this skin. They call her "ugly," "weird," and a "little scary", but it seems strange to me, because I like "A Goat" skin, to me it is so beautiful and original.
The skin is a bit weird I know, but that's the reason why I think "A Goat" is a beautiful and special skin, there isn't another like it in the entire game.
I am not making this post to convince you to buy the skin or to make you like the skin, I will only give you my opinion and I'm going to try to explain why I thing that "A Goat" is beautiful and special skin.
Point number 1: It was a gift from a very special person for me.
Point number 2: Its originality.
Let's face it, you may or may not like it but it's obvious that "A Goat" is an autentical skin, it's simply but cool.
One of the unknowns with this skins is that it is not possible to know with certainty if "A goat" is male or female, because, from my point of view, from the waist down his body looks like a woman's and from the waist up he seems to have a man's body, but with the head of a goat.
That definitely make it very original, it is half male, half female.
Point number 3: The number 3
Just like I said with my review of versa (Click to read here). The number 3 is on of my lucky numbers. The Goat skin has that number on its belt buckle so for me that's an extra point.
In general terms I like rare, rare and original things because they will always be special.

Thanks for reading me and support my content !!

Cowards We Are Not
Battle of Buena Vista
Battle of Buena Vista, (Feb. 22–23, 1847), battle fought near Monterrey, Mex., in the Mexican-American War (1846–48)
Colonel Davis, who will be mentioned in the below story, was severely crippled at the beginning of the battle. The morning that the American troops came under fire, he was shot through the bones of the arch of one of his feet. He continued to fight and lead his men until after the worst of the battle had subsided. Major Bradford, who will be mentioned here as well, then took command so that Colonel Davis could have his foot taken care of. Major Bradford was known for his coolness in battle and utter contempt of danger.
From the Best History Review, we hope you enjoy the story and we thank you for spending time with us today.
February, 1847
To my brother James,
Forgive me for not writing sooner. I have made a spot for a moment’s rest and write of a great battle. I will now give you a detailed account of what I saw and what I will forever see.
The left flank of our forces was turned by the Mexicans, who at the time had been in pursuit of the Flying Infantry and Horseman.
Column after column, the Mexican army continued to appear until they became one large mass. Believe me when I say, this mass numbered 12,000 men, perhaps more.
Dear brother, I think I learned what fear is at the sight of this mass that stood proudly in our path. Their arms were brilliantly burnished and reflected the rays of the sun in a blinding manner. The uniforms of the Mexican army were richly decorated ,as if to please a king in the highest of courts. Here we stood, all of us, including our officers, in tattered and soiled garments, looking as if we could not take another step.
Soon, the Mexican Cavalry appeared, in the same fashionable dress, numbering over two thousand.
The sight of such a magnificent and organized force was a reminder that at present, they were the victors.
Our father, in his stories of war, would say he did not fear death, because he thought of himself as dead already. I tell you in all honesty, brother, his meaning is clear to me.
Tumblr media
The soldiers of the Mexican army fell before us, score after score. Our men filled the air with Mississippi cheers and let the enemy know that no cowards were to be found in our tattered band.
Our men rushed forward, continuing our cheers and firing of rifles and the Mexican army began to retreat, disorganized and spreading in all directions. The dead covered the ground and our own soldiers would have become disorganized had it not been for our leader.
Colonel Davis saved us from being swallowed by an overpowering number of the enemy and ordered us to retire and rally.
Brother, you remember Major Bradford? He is, quite possibly, the bravest, impatient and impulsive officer that ever drew a sword. Bradford, seeing us falling back, thought we were defeated. He dismounted his horse and followed slowly, and as he followed, pleadingly, he began exclaiming — — “Shoot me! Shoot me!” I called out to him — - “What the devil’s the matter, Major?” At this, Major Bradford continued his performance. “Ah, kill me! The Mississippi Regiment has run, and I don’t want to live another minute!” The Major soon realized as we reformed and the voice of Colonel Davis pushed us forward. “Forward! Guide center! March!” The command was repeated by fifty or more voices and though our ranks were thinned by the killed and wounded, we once again gave out the Mississippi cheer and returned to the bloody contest. At some point during the night, we returned over the grounds from which we had given our first charge. Ten years from now, if I still stand, do I hope to forget the scene. Our fallen comrades, with bodies mangled and some unrecognizable….I can not express the feelings that overwhelm a man, when after battle, he stands upon the field of such death and destruction. Young Caleb, a young man we had known since childhood, was among the dead. If it had not been for the straw hat and a few articles of clothing, he would have been unrecognizable.
He had been shot, stabbed several times and most of his clothing was taken. The enemy is not kind to our dead, dear brother. I do not know if I will ever forget the horrors of this war. For the time being, my mind rest uneasily at the thought that I would be just as young Caleb.
Forgive my choppiness in writing this. I find myself having to put my writing down and return to it.
Brother, do you know, as I write this, I find comfort in the thought of death. I question if there is a one of us that does not find comfort in the idea that this waiting game will one day have an ending. As it stands, from my view point, it is not a matter of if death will come, but when?
Tumblr media
As I walked among the dead, I saw bodies shot and stabbed, mutilated, the same as Caleb. I saw every expression in the faces of the dead, every passion and feeling frozen in death. Some had a peaceful look of acceptance, others anger, having fought the approaching death and enemy at the same moment. Some had begged for mercy while others fought bravely until the last breath, hands reached out to the enemy as if still in battle.
Brother, here on the same battlefield, waiting for burial and never to return home, the young, and reaching up in the ages to the mature and old, died together on this bloody day.
I passed our dead and moved forward to the scene of the Mexican soldiers. The ground was covered with them. The numbers of the dead that had moments before been our foe is not what held my attention. The scene was horrible enough, God knows, but the horror of the sight was diverted.
Brother, not a one of the Mexican soldiers was robbed or stripped of his clothing, nor was there any sign that the the wounded or dead Mexican soldiers had been tortured or abused.
The Mexicans have been know to call us ‘barbarous volunteers of the United States of the North”.
I stood in that spot for a long time, brother, learning who our ‘foe’ was.
One of the dead Mexican soldiers was a young boy, not more than 15 years old. The sight touched me deeply and brought me to my knees. A bullet had struck him, went through the breast and would have brought an instant death. He was lying on his back, his face looking over to the side and towards the sky, and in his death, his face held a smile, a sunny and bright smile.
Brother, I hope when death comes for me, I wear a smile as bright and welcoming as his.
Your brother for eternity,
Tumblr media

Disneyland Park
Tumblr media
Disneyland Park, located in Anaheim, California, is Walt Disney's original theme park that first opened its gates in 1955. Now nearly 70 years old, it continues to be one of the most popular theme parks in the world, attracting over 18 million guests annually. With iconic rides like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, and Space Mountain, as well as shows, parades, restaurants, and shops, there is something for everyone at the Happiest Place on Earth.
Tumblr media
History of Disneyland The idea for Disneyland Park first came to Walt Disney as he watched his daughters playing at a park in Los Angeles in the late 1940s. He envisioned a place where parents and children could have fun together, sparking the concept of an amusement park with different themed lands and attractions. After several years of planning, Walt Disney Productions purchased 160 acres of orange groves in Anaheim in 1953 to house his dream park. Construction began on Disneyland in 1954, costing over $17 million. The park had several lands inspired by real places that were special to Walt, like New Orleans Square and Main Street USA. On July 17, 1955, Disneyland opened its gates in a televised event to over 90 million viewers. The first day was filled with complications from massive crowds to attractions breaking down, but guests' enthusiasm prevailed. Since then, Disneyland has expanded from 33 attractions to over 60 adventures across 8 themed lands.
Tumblr media
Attractions at Disneyland Park Disneyland Park contains popular dark rides, roller coasters, shows, and more across its themed lands. Fantasyland has classic storybook rides like Peter Pan's Flight, Alice in Wonderland, and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Guests can meet Disney Princesses at the Royal Hall or take a spin on the Mad Tea Party teacups. Adventureland transports visitors to exotic locales with the Indiana Jones Adventure and Jungle Cruise. Meanwhile, Critter Country offers a trip down a musical river on Splash Mountain (Tiana's Bayou). In New Orleans Square, visitors can drop in at a dinner party with ghosts on the Haunted Mansion or join the swashbuckling pirates of Pirates of the Caribbean. Frontierland also provides two big attractions: a runaway mine train on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and exploring the old American West on Mark Twain Riverboat. Tomorrowland provides opportunities to zoom through space on Space Mountain or drive cars in Autopia. And guests of all ages will enjoy the Disneyland Railroad, which transports riders around the park.
Tumblr media
Shows and Entertainment at Disneyland In addition to rides and attractions, Disneyland Park offers spectacular live entertainment and shows. Guests can enjoy parades like "Magic Happens" on Main Street USA with stunning floats and Disney characters dancing through the park. At Sleeping Beauty Castle, "Disneyland Forever" fireworks extravaganza lights up the night sky. And don't miss the fun pirate show of "Fantasmic!" on the Rivers of America, with Mickey Mouse and friends in a battle of good versus evil. For shows, comedy and music lovers can catch laugh-out-loud antics at the Golden Horseshoe Revue or jazz tunes from the Five and Dime band on Buena Vista Street. Disney princesses tell their stories at the Royal Theatre in Fantasy Faire. And kids can sing and dance with puppets of favorite Disney Junior characters in Disney Junior: Live on Stage! With so much world-class entertainment, there's always a show starting soon at Disneyland.
Tumblr media
Shopping Opportunities at Disneyland From apparel to toys to specialty treats, Disneyland Park offers a wide selection of one-of-a-kind merchandise and souvenirs. Main Street USA contains the most shopping with over a dozen stores. Guests can find personalized Mickey ears at The Mad Hatter, or the latest Disney pins and t-shirts at the Emporium. The Main Street Magic Shop carries magic sets and tricks for aspiring magicians. In New Orleans Square, Pieces of Eight sells pirate gear after riding Pirates of the Caribbean. Meanwhile, guests can bring home a bit of Frontierland with cowboy hats from the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Gift Shop. Tomorrowland offers space-age souvenirs at the Star Trader shop. And little princesses will love browsing the royal merchandise at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique in Fantasyland.
Tumblr media
Dining Options at Disneyland From quick service to fine dining, Disneyland Park offers unique dining experiences across its lands. Main Street USA contains Plaza Inn, serving American classics in an elegant Victorian setting. New Orleans Square offers Cajun and Creole flavors at Blue Bayou Restaurant inside Pirates of the Caribbean. Guests can enjoy fried chicken and pot roast family-style while taking in a show at the Golden Horseshoe in Frontierland. Fantasyland offers character dining with Disney princesses at the Storybook Canal Boats. Adventureland contains tropical cuisine and tiki cocktails at the exotically themed Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar. Tomorrowland offers sci-fi decor and burger favorites at Galactic Grill. And no Disneyland trip is complete without grabbing a dole whip or churro snack! With so many distinct restaurants, everyone can find something appetizing at Disneyland.
Tumblr media
Crowds Peak Times - Holiday weeks like Spring Break, Thanksgiving, and Christmas/New Year's are very crowded. Summer months of June-August also see high crowds. - Weekends, especially holiday weekends, tend to be more crowded than weekdays. Crowd Management by Disney - Disney uses RFID sensors and magic bands to monitor crowd levels in real-time. This allows staff to disperse crowds when they start building up in certain areas. - Disneyland now requires park reservations in addition to tickets to manage capacity. This prevents the park from closing due to extreme crowding. - During peak seasons, Disney may extend park hours or schedule extra entertainment like shows and character meet-and-greets to handle larger crowds.
Tumblr media
Upgrades and Changes Over the Years While staying true to Walt Disney's original vision, Disneyland Park has continued evolving with new upgrades and attractions over its nearly 70-year history. In 1959, the Disneyland Monorail and Submarine Voyage opened to give visitors new transportation and adventure options. The 1960s saw classic dark rides like the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and It's a Small World open to park guests. In the 1980s and 90s, popular thrill rides like Splash Mountain and Indiana Jones Adventure delighted theme park fans. Recent years have brought Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge in 2019, allowing fans to pilot the Millennium Falcon and explore the Black Spire Outpost. Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway also debuted in 2023 as the first ride-through attraction starring Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. And in 2024, the reimagined attraction Tiana's Bayou Adventure will open, bringing even more representation and magic to Disneyland. As technology advances and imagination continues, Disneyland Park strives to improve the guest experience for all.
Tumblr media
Secrets and Hidden Details of Disneyland Park Beyond the iconic rides and attractions, Disneyland Park contains many lesser-known secrets and fascinating details hidden in plain sight. Inside the Indiana Jones Adventure queue, guests can find a hieroglyphic warning to "beware of the eye" referring to the ride vehicle's blinking light. The Haunted Mansion's pet cemetery features humorous epitaphs on the tombstones. And next to Walt Disney's personal apartment above the Fire Station on Main Street, a lamp remains lit to signify his presence in spirit. Hidden Mickeys, images of Mickey Mouse's distinct outline, appear across the park in ride facades, railings, and more. Club 33, an exclusive private club in New Orleans Square, once had a 14-year waiting list to join. And Disneyland's trash cans all have special details matching their surrounding theme, like "asteroids" in Tomorrowland. By peeking closer at this park created from Walt's dreams and imagination, intriguing secrets await behind every corner.
Tumblr media
Conclusion From thrill rides to dazzling shows, shopping sprees to character dining, Disneyland Park offers endless opportunities for magic and adventure. As Walt Disney's pioneering theme park over nearly 70 years, it set the standard for immersive storytelling and detail-oriented lands to delight guests of all ages. With iconic attractions, world-class entertainment, and Disney magic around every turn, it's clear why Disneyland remains the Happiest Place on Earth today and for decades to come. New Fiction 2024 - January
"Osee" ed. Richard Challoner (1752)
I can't go back to check what Osee was on about. All you need to know about this phase of the bible is guys were prophesying, and pretty much every prophecy is about how the Hebrew people were fuckin' it up. This all feels like items in what should have been the appendix, but since I'm reading a Catholic bible it's all just filler until JC shows up. (And we're just under 70% after two solid years of gettin' through it.)
"Joel" ed. Richard Challoner (1752)
Another dull prophet.
This Gray Spirit by Heather Jarman (2002)
I want to love every DS9 book. It's a struggle to not enjoy them. But there's a trend here in the Mission Gamma series of trying to do Too Much. The last book was very long, but also very focused, and the premise of taking the Defiant out into the Gamma quadrant sounds fine until they do it again... and again... and again. And it gets to the point where I just don't care what they're doing. I want DS9--the setting--and its beloved cast of characters to do their thing there. I'll read on but this one really should have been two books instead of this A plot-B plot structure.
Divided We Fall by John J. Ordover, David Mack, Andrew Currie, Michael Collins, Richard Bennett, David Roach, John Nyberg, Jenna Garcia, WildStorm FX, Alex Sinclair, Jeff Mariotte (2001)
This one contrasted nicely against Revenant by Alex White. Both stories focus on Dax and how the Trill symbiont managers are real bad at transparency. The more I learn about this world, the more it sounds like a pretty clear caste system that should get them booted from the Federation. But then, I suffer the flaw of binary judgement, and there's probably some nuance there to consider.
Gargoyles the Movie Game dev. Buena Vista Home Video (1995)
Wow, this was the most broken version of Chutes and Ladders I've ever played. I recommend a house rule of doubling each number on the spinner if you want any chance at winning. The event cards are just so punishing and the strict time limit makes it a steep uphill battle.
Gargoyles Remastered dev. Walt Disney Computer Software & Empty Clip Studios (1995, 2023)
I had a problem with input lag in the original version that ruined my initial impression, but that was on me. Playing the remaster with no input lag and the extra features like updated art, music, and the rewind all added up to a more enjoyable, if short, experience. It's otherwise an interesting artifact from that transition out of 2D platformers and into chunky polygons and pre-rendered 3D visuals.
Gargoyles: Night Flight dev. Tiger Electronics (1995)
I've played a few of these mid-90s Tiger handhelds and it's fine for a car ride, which is where I always imagine these things were played at the time. It's so overly simple that I can't say it's worth playing, unlike the classic Game & Watch titles that had real challenge and replayability to them.
The Color Purple dir. Bazawule (2023)
I never caught the original movie or book, but this musical was great. And those events are some real fucked up trauma.
The Iron Claw dir. Sean Durkin (2023)
As period biopics go, this one's fine. Not too wild or revelatory, other than its highlighting a segment of the wrestling scene which I had no idea about. The performances were all solid and Ephron clearly committed to the role. The story is from that period of simpler costumes and narratives before my friends and I came aboard in the later 80s and 90s, so it was neat to understand a fictionalized buildup to the more familiar stories.
Poor Things dir. Yorgos Lanthimos (2023)
It was great, stylized, and I suppose does have an act structure but it feels a little loose with it, which I'm all for. It just doesn't match up to the amazing work in The Favorite.
Night Swim dir. Bryce McGuire (2024)
A snoozer, I'm afraid. The seed of it is interesting but it doesn't quite grow enough to make it compelling.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom dir. James Wan (2023)
Another snoozer. It's not as fun as the first one, and if these superhero things aren't fun then what're we doing here?
The Beekeeper dir. David Ayer (2024)
Yeah this was a rough stretch. Another action snoozer that maybe could have highlighted something interesting about exploitation of elders but just uses that as an excuse for Statham to go around punching dudes in a boring way.
I.S.S. dir. Gabriela Cowperthwaite (2023)
There's this particular subgenre of space movie where people are just out there in their tin cans, then they're stuck or screwed, and the drama plays out amid a desperate race to get out of that sitch. Hell, I will myself to sleep by conjuring a little scene I've developed where I'm out in my little space tug boat and need to shut down systems and go to sleep for the cycle. Gravity, Interstellar, and Life are all recent examples of this kind of movie that come to mind, and now we can add I.S.S. to that list. And I love these. I love space trouble. I ran into a bunch of these stories in my recent watch of The Outer Limits (1995), and I really can't get enough. I.S.S. has this uncomfortable angle on what if Earth annihilates itself, huh, smart guy? (Art reflecting reality, etc.) And that's a bummer to consider. But the story that plays out onboard the station is still neat and I would definitely watch this again.
Mean Girls dir. Samantha Jayne & Arturo Perez Jr. (2024)
Dug it! Maybe more than I did the original. Mostly because the musical sequences are great.
American Fiction dir. Cord Jefferson (2024)
Stories about writers can be a little too navel-gazey for me to handle, but I'm glad I caught this.
The Book of Clarence dir. Jeymes Samuel (2024)
It comes from the angle of true belief, so you have to buy into that going in, but the questions it raises and the general production all make it worth the watch. Plus, they tackle the question of why even is Jesus a white guy (well, we know why), so that makes it extra fun.
Battlestar Galactica - "Saga of a Star World" (1978)
Doofy? That's the word. Definitely of its time, but I'm gonna get through it all later this year.
The Twilight Zone - "Shatterday" (1985)
Ey Bruce Willis being moody before that was his brand. I watched the 60s version and now I feel obligated to see what issues of the day were popping up for 80s TV people.
Stargate SG-1 - "Children of the Gods" (1997)
Oh, okay, I didn't realize they were angling for the Showtime adult crowd with this. I was so used to the sanitized Saturday afternoon syndication version of the episodes. In any case, still a good start. Another show to watch in full later on.
Farscape - "Premiere" (1999)
Hm, more white guys as leads/captains isn't as appealing, but the puppety goodness of Henson aliens compels me to continue.
Fringe - "Pilot" (2008)
Holy shit, those first five minutes! I knew immediately I'd enjoy this show, whatever it's going to be. I heard enough good things that I figured I gotta.
Yellowstone - "Daybreak" (2018)
My mom wouldn't stop talking about this show so now I'll have to see what's what. So far it's Kevin Costner as an old asshole who raised his kids to also be assholes?

Is there anything more beautiful than a very large explosion?] [No, I think not!] Panel 6: Vinny: [Hey! Look who's back!] [That explains my sudden craving for fish sticks!] narrator: [Turn to page 84 for the exciting conclusion!]
Notes:
This post is passed the weekly deadline! That's 1 demerit for me. I'll need to figure out something to do with those to make them effective. This still counts as last week's post so I owe another this week, which I have decided will be the last comic in the Disney Adventures issue.
The story here takes place prior to the battle against the leviathan, seemingly before Milo's presentation on the bridge in the film.
We see that the Ulysses, unsurprisingly, carries diving equipment. However, these are ambient pressure diving suits, good for protection against tearing and cold but useless against the pressure at deeper levels. Humans can't really survive more than 60 meters (196.85 feet) below, which is why Atmospheric Diving Suits were invented! Imagine them in steampunk-esque, underwater robot suits instead!
The "scary fish" (the nayap according to Sweet's Fish Story!) is the first fantastical creature encountered by the expedition. It doesn't seem particularly interesting, though. A weird shark with a feathery tail and long snout?
Vinny's dialogue really shows how much Don Novello brought to the performance. Without his adlibbing and weird energy the character just doesn't hit the same.

ITA’s Geographical Moment (Buena Vista County)
Here's another geo-political refence!!
(Reprint) Sometimes when you are studying the geography of a particular area it helps to have a historical perspective of the settlements and the names that were chosen to identify their locations.Such is the case of Buena Vista county. No it’s not named for the college in Storm Lake but rather derived from the name of a decisive battle of the Mexican War of 1846. Students of Iowa history will…

Battle of Buena Vista
Background of the Battle The Battle of Buena Vista, commonly referred to as the Battle of Angostura in Mexico, was a notable engagement during the Mexican-American War. The intensifying tensions between the United States and Mexico, fueled by territorial disputes, led to the outbreak of the conflict. It appears to be important to note that Mexico had never diplomatically recognized Texas’s…

this is an interesting random thing:
we went to a rivertown on Labor Day and rode on a pontoon boat that my uncle rented. This was a town that my uncle lived in a few years ago (I pet sat for him there and lived there for a week several different times-- very fun exploring the town of 700 and going up the hill to the buena vista)
-- On the way there, I wanted to find out how to pronounce it because some people seem to pronounce it with the 'a' sound, like we say 'apple'. Vs the 'ah' sound, like how I say it and people would pronounce it in other languages. i found out it means different things in different languages.
-- so I looked up what it was actually named after. It was named after a battle in the Crimean War! -- Alma

Alright so here are ten albums that, by all rights, should have been on the rolling Stone top 500 albums list. In my research I did learn that one of them (Buena Vista Social Club) was in a previous version of the list so why the fuck did they take it off? My first pick is probably a lil contentious but I feel strongly about it, the rest are so obvious that it is insane they aren't on there.

Three 6 Mafia - Mystic Stylez
I feel like I am screaming into the void trying to explain why this album is so good and influential. Despite remaining an underground artist throughout the 90s Three 6 Mafia were one of the pioneers of horrorcore hip hop. But more importantly than that their eerie lofi production and laid back tongue twisting was an obvious forerunner to the trap scene of the 00s and 10s. In fact you can hear them nearly create the trap beat several times in this album. Mystic Styles simply does not sound like it could have come out in 95 to me. It belongs much more alongside artists like Lil Ugly Mane than Wu-Tang Clan.
Beyond the realm of mere influence this is also just an incredibly good album that never deserves the lukewarm response that it got from the mainstream. The beats are so stark and sloppy, with such an emphasis on horror movie style dissonance. The resulting beats are perfect for both slow and lugubrious tongue twisters, and the intense violent horrorcore raps. Overall Mystic Stylez creates atmosphere more effectively than most hip hop artists could ever dream of.

Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner
UK garage and grime are not genres that American audiences usually pay attention to. Hell they aren't genres that most UK audiences pay attention to. Dizzee Rascal changed that when he released Boy In Da Corner. The frenetic pace of Rascal's rapping and the equally chaotic beats are transfixing. The wild urgency with which every line is delivered lends credibility to the fairly goofy and teenagery lyrics. Dizzee Rascal can be very goofy, but the catchyness of the songs and the sheer energy of it all made grime a hit genre worldwide if only for a moment. Also I love when someone flips a sample so well that you can't hear the original without thinking of the song that sampled it so basically r.i.p. to Billy Squire but Big Beat is just the sample in Fix Up, Look Sharp now.

Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Iron Maiden do two things, rip guitar at one million miles an hour and scream at the top of their lungs. But there's actually a secret third thing and it's that they have some pretty decent lyricism. Iron Maiden are consistently concerned with the horrors of war. The subject is all over their previous singles and is present on both the hits on Powerslave. Aces High portrays a panicked pilot trying to survive a battle in WW2, and the more politically charged Two Minutes To Midnight criticizes the commodification of warfare and the fact that capitalists are bringing the world to the brink of destruction for the sake of profits. It's not all super prescient stuff tho. A lot of Iron Maiden songs are just there to sound cool. And they do. The guitars go fast and squeedly and meedly while the drum and bass are galloping along with the intensity of a freight train.

Metallica - Ride The Lightning
Metallica's first album is good, but the follow up blows nearly every other thrash album out of the water. With just a little music theory knowledge and a willingness to experiment Metallica crafted songs with acoustic intros, actually good bridges and breakdowns and even catchier riffs. All without sacrificing the breakneck speed. In fact Ride The Lightning is probably even faster than their previous efforts. It's not just about speed though, it's pacing. The fact that these songs tend to have slow intros that build into fast paced squeedling helps break up the album so it isn't all on all the time. This would also become a staple of Metallica's sound from this album on. But they never nail their own sound as hard as they do on Ride The Lightning. It's probably my favorite thrash album.

Harry Chapin - Verities & Balderdash
Choosing just one Harry Chapin album was extremely hard because basically all of his albums have at least one of my favorites of his on it. But there was no way to get Taxi, 30,000 pounds of bananas, and Mr. Tanner on one album. So I went for the album that I thought Rolling Stone would be most likely to choose. Verities And Balderdash starts off with Chapin's most well known song, Cats In The Cradle, and then it only gets better from there. Harry Chapin is the greatest lyricist of the 70s adult contemporary scene. Fuck it he's probably the best of the 70s period. Chapin's knack for writing complex and sincere emotions that give a voice to perspectives that don't get enough play in popular music. He gives a voice to people who are typically voiceless. Everymen with humble aspirations that still amount to nothing. The musical arrangements are part of what make this work. Chapin's voice is bolstered by a combination of folk guitar and bombastic strings that make every line about failing marriages and fascist fire departments seem exactly as big as they are to the characters in the songs.
Okay I'm just gonna talk about one song from this album. This song was a hit. The Town That Made America Famous. This is one of the best songs every written. Top ten songs of all time easily. In it the narrator describes his life in a tenement building with a poor family and all the poor families that have given up and don't see any prospects beyond day to day existence. It describes their oppression at the hands of their landlord "The best that we all could afford / But still too fine for the rich landlord / To tear it down" and the local police "The cops would make a point to shadow us around our town". And then when a fire starts in their building the fire department refuse to show up as retaliation for someone drawing a swastika on the firehouse. In the narrative it is made clear that the narrator and friends were the ones that did it, but the fire department doesn't know that. The only person who shows up to fight the fire is a plumber, the only working class member of the fire department. The plumber let's the narrator's family stay at his house and the singer reflects that "It's funny when you get that close, it's kind of hard to hate". This song actually makes my heart race with anxiety whenever I hear it. It is so horrifically real. So basically if you are one of my anarchist friends and you think that some fuck from the 1970s writing folk rock can't be infinitely more woke and prescient than anything coming out today then I've got some news for you. Harry Chapin is a fucking comrade.

Buena Vista Social Club - s/t
By the time this album was made in 1996 many of the musicians featured, Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén Gonzáles, Elíades Ochoa, to name just a handful of the more prominent ones, had been performing for decades. Segundo was already in his 80s. Almost all of them were Havana natives and played the local circuit, but the Cuban trade embargo severely hampered the ability for this music to reach wider audiences. Now there's no obligation to make your music for any audience other than the one right in front of you, but when American blues musician Ry Cooder ran into visa troubles while trying to put together an afro-cuban project he wound up smashing the Cuban musicians he was already working with into a group with several other local artists in the Havana music scene.
Okay history lesson over. The music on this album is so clearly the work of passionate experts with decades of experience under their belt. The delicate and vibrant melodies represent a slowing down of intensity that had become present in the bolero and danzón music of the time. Though many of the songs were newly written for this album, they feel like a return to some comfortable childhood place. A place that can only be kept alive in song. Solo escuchas un álbum de música Cubana escucha de Buena Vista Social Club.

Apex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Alright if anyone says IDM imma go feral. This is an ambient techno album. We don't gotta be elitist about this electronic music. In fact I think it is important that this is an ambient techno album because it gave the techno scene more mainstream attention than it ever had gotten in the past and it brought the ambient subgenre of techno more into the foreground.
If there is one thing that Richard D James understands it is texture. Every track on Selected Ambient Works is so much more than just a drum beat and a melody. While the drums have a hint of hip hop and the melodies are more present than other techno music, the real star is the diverse sonic textures that populate each track. From distant wet sounds that sound like the inside of a submarine to dry buzzsaw sounds to fuzzy bass lines there is so much to focus in on. When a new sound enters the mix it changes the entire flavor of the song as it's new texture slots into the sonic palate. And while later Apex Twin releases are just as incredible it is on this debut that Richard D James shows restraint. Any less and the songs would be boring, any more and they would be overwhelming. Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is one of the high points in electronic music.

KLF - The White Room
The KLF are a weird anomaly, they jumped into the electronic music scene in 87 made a handful of incredibly creative releases and then dipped in 92 after firing a machine gun full of blanks into the audience at the BRIT Awards and deleting their entire back catalogue of music.
So uh The White Room is a house album. Kind of. The KLF were not really easily pinned down to a genre. There are aspects of rave, house, dub, hip hop, acid, etc all over this album. It has a grand and mythological sound that would be at home in an underground rave or a huge stadium. The lyrics are mostly spiritual nonsense. I don't mean that in an "Its spiritual so I hate it kind of way" I mean that The KLF are primarily inspired by the satirical Illuminatus! Trilogy and therefore use satirical takes on spiritual aesthetics. Songs like Last Train To Trancentral make a trip to the rundown shack they used as a recording studio sound like a religious pilgrimage.

Avalanches - Since I Left You
There is absolutely no other album like Since I Left You. There are plenty of sampledelica / instrumental hip hop / turntablist / plunderphonics records but no album is as dedicated to being all of those things at once as this one. The Avalanches conceived of this album while looking at all the weird and forgotten albums that populated thrift stores in their native Melbourne. To quote one half of the group Darren Seltman "[t]he more rejected and unwanted the record that a sample comes from, the more appealing it is, I guess it's almost a reaction to rare record finding, but occasionally things like 'Holiday' come up".
The way that samples are used here is unique. The album is made entirely of samples as is the case with plunderphonics, but the sheer number of samples and the dense layering is incredible. A breakdown of any one song on the album will show dozens of samples flitting in and out things making up the entire backbone of the track that you didn't even register was something you might have recognized. Hell even the very obvious samples like the aforementioned Holiday by Madonna is woven into the mix so well that it is fully divorced from its original context.
Now the other thing that Since I Left You has is atmosphere. Instrumental hip hop in this style has a tendency for one aesthetic and only one aesthetic: driving on the highway at 2:00 AM while feeling contemplative. Trust me that isn't overspecific I have listened to a lot of records. Since I left you is the polar opposite of this. The album is a brightly lit tropical dreamscape. A psychedelic reimagining of a cruise vacation. The joy of creativity and sunshine flows through every second of Since I Left You and it is impossible to come out the other end without a smile on your face. This is one of the greatest albums ever made and it definitely makes my top ten.

Yellow Magic Orchestra - Solid State Survivor
The complete and utter lack of any east asian music whatsoever on both rolling stones top 500 albums and the 1001 albums list actually makes me livid. I could make at least a top 100 list of just Japanese music. So I'm gonna do the bare minimum and put on probably the first Japanese albums to hit it big in the west.
YMO have a sound that, while not strictly ahead of their time is still fairly pioneering. There is a lack of the punk/new wave aesthetics of Tubeway Army, but more pop sensibilities than Ktaftwerk. They wind up falling in this unique synth pop place of very sincere bubbliness, but also artistic integrity. Nothing quite sums it up like their cover of The Beatles' Day Tripper. It's a fun off beat cover that retains the poppiness of the original but with a thrumming synth line that almost predicts techno. And techno artists do tend to list Solid State Survivor as an influence.
