being in the industry for seven years has pluses, but also minuses. it makes you more jaded, weary of who you let in — for a girl who knows nothing about permanency, she’s found harder times in friendships, drifting away when she forgets about text messages that leave in silence. however, over the years, she’s collected some people one by one, mainly non-idols and more underground artists, that she resonates with mentally when they fall into wasting time talking away about meaningless nothings. minjung doesn’t have very many friends — or the type to say she has very many close ones. she has a lot of positive acquaintances being the industry, but very few that she considers her people or that she’d extend a hand out, and reply to anything for longer than a day

it’s not purposeful, but more so a side-effect of how she goes about communication. she leaves texts on read, forgetting to reply but not feeling any more motivated to send a response days later. she doesn’t like talking on the phone unless they’re close friends, and meeting up in person is harder for her when she feels like it’s a waste of time to see an acquaintance and talk about nothings for a few hours

as a result, her friendships inside the idol-world is very small to none. however, there are a few friendships that are more keen to the public eye — aka, it’s a business friendship that the public eats up, so they’d play to it rather than actually have that sense of friendship deep in

most times though, they don’t really talk music. they hang out in groups, sometimes minjung makes an entrance in an underground club (albeit very covert, and not really known to public). she’s kept in the back room goofing off with her friends, dancing around, etc.

other times, they sit around drinking at someone’s house — very standard soju, beer, etc. watching movies, tv. these types of hang out are relegated to later night when the public isn’t really actively roaming the streets because she keeps these friendship concealed

also, it’s private because minjung follows 0 people on instagram, and the public can’t speculate who she’s friends with and not friends with

overall, these friendships keep her rooted in some sort of normalcy.

I 100% agree with your post about lm, especially now that leigh-anne is pregnant. Do you have any ideas/thoughts about what might happen down the future? Not like a reunion (was the demons taught us better lol) but of a solo career? I know jesys currently recording but do you think the other girls might do something?

Heads up, I have a lot of opinions that are coming out now. Disclaimer that I love them, naturally, and have been following them for the past eight years with a lot of joy, I just... have thoughts.

As for solo careers, I know Jade’s been trying to find television gigs (this probably stemmed from that whole SERVED show she had during quarantine, as well as LM The Search). Perrie is setting up a business but I’m not sure what it is yet, no one does, there’s just a link in her insta bio. I’m assuming it’ll be a clothing line or shoe line or something of the sorts, based on that collab she had with that shoe brand she had a while ago. Leigh Anne has the baby soon and the documentary about racism in the industry that’s coming up, and I also heard that both she and Perrie have been doing solo songs on the low.

Even if you take the dynamic lately, Jesy leaving and the weirdness about tour out of the equation (like, why the fuck did they announce a tour in the middle of covid while everyone was cancelling shit left and right? Why couldn’t that wait? Why did they continue with The Search and didn’t acknowledge once that Since September definitely wasn’t gonna be their support act in April 2021 because there was no way tour was gonna be happening then?) I think LM has kind of run its course. They already said the new Confetti version was the real closure of that era, and that they had some new music planned and big things coming to celebrate. It’s the ten year anniversary this year so they have some big plans for this year apparently, there’s some OT3 songs coming and I think that’ll be the intro to the end, with tour (if it’s possible within that time frame pandemic wise) being the finale.

Because when they started, they were fresh. Had great songs. DNA was a good start with Wings and How You Doin’, Salute was an amazing album and fit entirely with the early 2010 vibes and was everything fandom wanted, Get Weird was... something, but it worked at the time, and then Glory Days really became their breakout moment with Shoutout To My Ex that became massive, and Touch was everywhere.

But they’ve had so many weird mishaps in their career and to be honest, they marketed LM5 as a feminist statement and it just... wasn’t. That’s partly credited to their label and Simon at the time because they weren’t even behind Woman Like Me, it wasn’t what they wanted (and you could tell), but then... Joan of Arc? Jade introduced it at the Apple event as the feminist anthem they’ve always wanted to write, but it just wasn’t the big feminist song they made it out to be, in fact I found the entire thing very cringeworthy. Actual Joan of Arc was an inspiration, and that song was just about being hot and independent? It was very tone deaf to me, Woman’s World would have been much better suited for that purpose. Although I’m still mad we didn’t see Malfoy!Perrie on film, but that’s my gay lizard brain taking over. Then Strip wasn’t the big body image statement they had in mind, it didn’t land well (and also, if you’re gonna yell about how you’re beautiful with no makeup, wearing a very obvious “no makeup” makeup look with falsies — Jesy even had a smokey eye in the video — kind of kills your message lmao). They mean well but it’s never quite it, they always JUST miss the mark? Same with the Confetti video now, it’s supposed to be a very queer friendly video with the Ru Paul drag queens and the girls crossdressing, but it was still mostly done from a straight lens, with the girls commenting how they’d do the boys and vice versa. They TRY, and they’re allies, and I know they mean well, but just running around yelling about how hot you are and you’re a queen, look I will stomp on your heart, isn’t feminism. And I don’t look to LM for my feminism, LM just makes me happy (and gay) and makes me feel sexy. And that’s FINE. It’s when they try to make it more than it is that it comes across a little... off, and it’s a shame, because their voices are INCREDIBLE. That performance of Secret Love Song pt II on The Search makes me cry every time I watch it, I think it’s their best moment, and that performance of Shout-out on TXF was iconic.

LM works best when they’re honest and fun and let the emotion out, I feel like. Shout-out and Touch were FUN. Little Me was a very honest song and it worked. When Leigh Anne earnestly talks about racism, that was amazing. Same when Perrie opened up about her anxiety, or when Jesy was finally able to make her documentary about her struggle, or when Jade talks about her ethnicity and past eating disorder. But it’s when they forcibly try to make it into something it doesn’t work, and that just kept happening. Confetti the album was just more of the same, nothing about it was new or fresh, even though they seemed to think it was. Their fandom is excited about everything they do, but outside of that... it’s been kind of simmering out, you know? All signs point to it coming to an end.

I’m curious to see what the three of them will come up with music wise before it all finishes. I’m hoping for something fresh, something new, now that they have a new dynamic to work with. It can bring a new perspective: MITAM was one of 1D’s best albums imo, and I’m very curious to see what the girls will make of this.

Reunion wise (and I think this will happen with 1D too, for the record, I never believed it’d be “soon”, not when they ended the way they did with History and that performance of Torn) I think it’ll be a Spice Girls kind of thing. Where once they’ve done everything they wanted in their individual lives, they’ll do a reunion tour in like, ten years. With Jesy, if she’s comfortable (and her contractual exit terms allow it), or without her if she’s not. In the mean time I’m assuming Perrie will make some hippie vibed album while building her business, maybe a musical here or there, Jade will become more of a media personality (with Served and the Bake-Off, it seems like she’s comfortable that way) while still making music, I see her do a Jessie Ware type of podcast, maybe? and I can’t really get a grip on Leigh Anne, maybe she’ll build upon the documentary, her own music (not a clue what that would be, could go either way), and then maybe her own clothing line? The woman looks iconic in everything she wears and she knows it. Either way they’ll want to do things more sustainable than just being a girlband? Things that make money in the long run and aren’t as fickle.

Of course I’m entirely willing to be proven wrong though, if they’re gonna keep doing this for decades because they can’t get enough of it, whomst knows. I don’t personally know them or their team. But that’s my view on it for the time being.

OK I’M FINALLY READY

Here’s a thread about taylor’s HEAVY use of circles this era and how much she highlighted them in the YNTCD music video. I by no means think that I’ve got something brilliant sorted out, but maybe this helps someone else come up with a really brilliant theory. Let’s get started.

I hope these first four are pretty obvious / self-explanatiory. Lots of circles everywhere. Lots of spinning. The pool circles are literally the thumbnail of the video. Circles are IMPORTANT

also!! look at the little circular curls she made with rollers at the beginning! she keeps a look similar to this for most of the video!!!

After that, we see this:

(I’ll note here that a LOT of these are bicycles. I won’t make the Bi joke, but I will say there’s something about bicycles in taylor’s music videos that always seems liberating for her.)

(I’ll also note that, in terms of image motifs, I’m already planning posts for the use of butterflies and flowers in this video, but that’s for a separate post.)

Pretty obvious circle(s) in the above image, but the target/bullseye shot is really interesting to note. Especially since...

and not to be dramatic but this is a 13 inside a circle. maybe a track having to do with this (and i promise I’ll get to theories and interpretations soon) is track 13? (*insert another dramatic sentence about how i’m gonna get a post together about the stars!!! once we have more info to go off on for analyzing them and why she’s been placing them everywhere*)

I also think, to run with the bicycle idea, that I love that these are mobile homes!!! I love that in connection with queerness, because I think we’re often happiest with found families rather than our biological ones. Being able to redefine “home”?? super important to me and other queer people I know, and I’m hoping that was one of taylor’s intentions with this setting.

and AHHH!! another one of my favorite things is how many umbrellas (also circular, usually) there are!! why the fuck does that matter, paola?? you might ask. HERE’S WHY: there have been SO MANY umbrellas present this era.

(this reminds me that I have a theory about at least one song or one moment on tour that’s about messiness, considering both ME! and YNTCD end messily - ME! with the rain paint and YNTCD with the food fight, BUT, again, that’s for another post)

there’s a joke in here about eating cake but y’all aren’t ready for it lmaooooo

this is another one that convinces me this is purposeful. who makes a little circular sign like that?? like, genuinely?

okay this next one’s a stretch, but bare with me

why this outfit? all of these are iconic looks, and she definitely looked fantastic that night, but obviously this outfit holds significance. she even posted three different instagram photos of this outfit (and ok, maybe she just liked it. i’m checking all my bases!!!)

heart filter and butterfly shoes... other recurring images this era. I’m arguing that she chose this outfit because the sequins make this outfit, essentially, just a bunch of circles. below is another closeup of sequins that she posted on insta:

(at this point i’m even revisiting whether or not the shape of the buttons themselves - below - were a clue in themselves) (even the fact that she made COOKIES, beautiful round COOKIES with katy!!! is this a huge stretch?? probably!! do i care??? NO)

PLUS, this little cutie is spinning around in this scene--it’s some of the only detectable movement in that moment

and, of course, there’s the iconic spinning crown. there’s one perfect frame of it as a perfect circle before the scene changes.

once i picked up on all of this, I knew I had to check out ME! - and here’s what I found!

iconic circles in the dance! over the words “like a rainbow with all of the colors, babydoll when it comes to a lover” nonetheless!!

and then HMMM!!! A RING!!!!!

(and the introduction of benjamin button; the fictional character he’s named after doesn’t have a proper timeline to his life - he ages backward. a real example of a reversal of the circle of life)

and finally, some subtle details, like when taylor gets spun around in a complete 180,

the rings of light coming in an out,

and the ripples on the ground as taylor and brandon since the bridge (one of the more significant clues for me, though I’m not sure why - just a gut instinct)

so what do I think it means? i’m not sure, though i’ve been speculating all day.

There’s something about the fact that most of the circles are spinning circles that makes me think there’s a single coming up about a cycle or wheel or ripple or ring or echo, but I don’t feel like we have enough (despite all this) to say what, concretely, it might be. I just knew I had to get all of this down, or I was gonna go crazy with it bottled up in my head.

Katy has a song called Circle the Drain, so it might connect to that. I think there’s value to the circle of life connection, since she posted so much about her childhood a few months back. Or, considering how often these are circles around her or others, it could be about inner circles and real friendship? (esp with the katy reconciliation and their likely collaboration coming soon + the fact that they dance around in little circles together in YNTCD:)

Though it’s unlikely, I kind of want it to connect to her Dany button and the idea of breaking the wheel. With the crown tossed into the air and the buried tires, I think it could be a cool commentary on the lack of necessity to constantly be cycling pop girls and who gets to be “on top,” especially if that’s the katy collab!

but yea!! that’s what I’ve been thinking about all day. I worked really hard on this so if it flops i’ll probably cry, haha, but i genuinely want to know: does this seem absolutely wack??? or do you think there’s some credence to it?? have you noticed anything I missed???

The internet at large, and social media in particular, is home to a particular sense of humor—a unique constellation of memes, clever hashtags, and puns, mixed with a healthy dose of nostalgia. Add in a dollop of self-deprecating jokes and you have internet culture.

And celebs get it. They get it in a way that brands just don’t.

2. They’re so relatable Not only do celebs get internet humor, they also get what works online: nostalgia (the #tbt is alive and well). Specifically, they get that their primarily millennial audience responds to 90s references.

So when celebrities post throwbacks—like this one from Mariah Carey—to 90s moments from their own lives, it’s very relatable for their audience.

But the relatability of celebs—that authenticity that people love to describe as ‘so real’—goes beyond embracing nostalgia. It’s about sharing moments from their lives that are a tad less glamorous than the usual red carpet shot.

In a way, the content that celebs now share on their own Insta timelines is reflective of the kind of material that paparazzos once doggedly pursued. But they’ve realized something fundamental about it: if they post it themselves, they control the message.

And, on a less cynical note, these down-to-earth, ‘authentic’ moments give them the opportunity to connect with fans. It’s precisely this relatability that explains why followers love celebs’ bathroom selfies.

This Instagram from Katy Perry is the perfect example. The photo itself is nothing special, just another group photo at a restaurant. What makes it special is the caption, which cleverly plays on ‘OG’ as short for ‘Olive Garden.’

In this shot, The Rock goes beyond simply posting a photo from the gym. Instead he gives his followers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into his routine and his motivation. It’s the details around it that make the shot special.

When brands post to Instagram, their captions are often short and unexpressive—they lack personality. But personality is something that celebs have in spades. And when it comes to Insta, it not only shows—it pays off.

What many brands fail to recognize is that they need to go beyond the image. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a great Instagram caption can be worth so much more.

4. They get that people connect with faces

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, celebs have selfies down to an art. And while selfies may be considered narcissistic, they’re based on a fundamental truth—people respond to faces.

A study by Georgia Institute of Technology and Yahoo Labs found that Instagram photos that feature human faces are 38 percent more likely to receive likes than photos without faces. They’re also 32 percent more likely to get comments.

The study’s lead, Saeideh Bakhshi, theorized about why this might be: “Faces are powerful channels of nonverbal communication. We constantly monitor them for a variety of contexts, including attractiveness, emotions, and identity.”

The researchers also found that the number of faces in a photo, their age, or gender didn’t make a difference.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that the internet loves a good cat photo. Or a snap of a cute puppy. Or basically any warm fuzzy thing. (Chewbacca aside, though the internet certainly loves him as well.)

Something that celebs do often that brands rarely emulate: they announce big news on Instagram.

Taylor Swift did it with a music video. Beyonce did it with an album.

7. They don’t shy away from taking a stance

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Instagram feed is a mix of beautiful landscapes and endangered animals, accompanied by fact-filled captions urging action on climate change, environmental, and humanitarian issues. Nearly all of them are Regrams.

DiCaprio uses his Insta to amplify the images, causes, and work of activist organizations. The few original posts he shares are still clearly focused on his overall message of environmentalism.

While companies don’t necessarily need to transform their feeds into a list of social justice issues, it can be beneficial to declare public support for causes about which the brand feels strongly. For example, Hootsuite is a B Corporation. B Corps use business as a force for good to solve social and environmental issues.

8. They shoot for a consistent look and feel

Celebrities are excellent at creating aesthetically-pleasing feeds. Whether they’re filled with vibrant colors, muted tones, or black and white, celeb feeds are typically identifiable by a distinctive look and feel.

Kourtney Kardashian has mastered the art of the #triplegram—a series of three related photos posted to Instagram consecutively (something that any pre-Instagram photographer would identify as a triptych).

On the other hand, Joe Keery is all about creating consistency through the look and feel of his overall feed. Joe’s photos typically have a matte-finish look with muted tones reminiscent of film photography. Wherever you land in his feed, it’s clear whose photos you’re looking at.

9. They talk up their friends

Who do you see most often in celebrity photos (other than the celeb you’re following)? Their friends and family of course, just like anyone else.

Except for them, those people just happen to be other celebs.
