One parallel between season 1 and season 3 that I really love, but haven't really seen anyone talk about is between the scene where Cousineau has Sally and Barry do the repetition exercise with "I love you" as the line and is continuously trying to make this point to Barry about how you need to listen and react to your scene partner and how they are delivering the line, and the scene in season three where Barry goes to Cousineau's family's house and says "I love you Mr. Cousineau. Do you love me?" and makes Cousineau respond and we get to see Cousineau listen and react to what Barry says in his response but then Barry has kind of reverted back to being unable to do the same to Cousineau's response. It's also paralleled multiple times between Barry and Sally throughout season 3 (ex: ep 1 where Sally doesn't pick up on how the monotone/lifeless "i love you" is indicative of Barry's depression, and again in ep 8 when Sally and Barry are talking on the phone and Barry can't pick up on the 'it's hopeless' tone just like in the original exercise).
I think the parallel is especially interesting in the broader context of the commentary Cousineau was giving Barry during the original exercise - during which Cousineau states "You're saying it like you mean it she's saying it like *spits* get the hell out of here." and then "look at her, it's hopeless Barry, give it the fuck up." and then during each of the previously mentioned scenes where Barry is failing to pick up the cues, it's during a moment when the person saying they love him is saying it in a very "it's hopeless" way.
Anyway I would make gifsets but I am not the guy.

MY THOUGHTS ON BARRY SEASON 1
I started this post a couple days ago and I'll finish now, after finishing the 2nd and 3rd seasons. A post about these two will come up later (not that you guys care).
Just finished watching Barry season 1 and... wow.
I started this series loving Barry with all of my heart and now I just... I just wanted to see him paying for his actions.
I still feel sorry for him. He's obviously good in a sadly twisted way, he learnt that killing is the best way to get approved by others and I was happy to see him learning that this isn't true, but MAN
// Spoilers! //
What I see in him is that he can't face the consequences of his mistakes. Everytime a killing can solve it, he just kills.
Actually, this is a flaw that I see in the series itself. It seems to kill off its problems. Someone discovers about Barry? Kill 'em. Someone is about to discover? Uh... kill 'em. Someone discovered and now is blackmailling Barry? Bro, just kill 'em.
Killing Chris, killing Justine. I really liked Justine, I'm so sorry that she's gone now :c
But anyways, even thought I feel like it is kind of lazy, this killing spree also has some sense. Barry maybe has gone trough so much pain that now he can't face the idea of facing it anymore, not even a single dropplet of pain is acceptable for him. The idea of getting into more pain makes him kill instead of just facing the consequences.
Barry is not following the incredible law of the holes! He's in a hole and can't stop digging more. He's in a bad place because of all the killing and doesn't stop killing. He thinks somehow digging will bring him out of the hole. It doesn't make sense.
Sadly, I get it. Accepting harsh consequences and pain from our own actions it's a part of growing, and I'm still learning this myself. I see myself doing really questionable things out of the fear of feeling negative feelings. Pain, sadness, they are all important to come clean and live a good life. If you want to start over you can't just ignore the consequences of your previous mistakes.
I have gone trought a part of my life where I felt so much pain that after this just the idea of suffering again was unbearable. But it doesn't make sense at all. Living a good life also depends on how much you let pain teach you things.
Barry went trought a sad moment where his pain wasn't exactly self inflicted. He thought killing was a good thing, but turns out he's a human being normal enough to be broken from so much death in front of him. Now he has the option to come to terms and needs to relearn how to deal with life. Killing isn't the best option. Actually, killing is never an option.
Sally is really annoying. Man. What a entitled woman. I get that she's a good artist and a human being, so I just accept her. Even with her flaws the show wouldn't be the same without her feeding Barry's incel status.
Also, speaking about incel, Barry's whole soundtrack could be made out of weezer and Gezebelle Gaburgably's songs.
Hank and Barry are my favorite characters. While Justine was alive I loved her too. I miss her.
Basically, it is a good show. I don't laugh all the time with the jokes. I watched it more because of the moral questionings and Bill Harder. It is funny too, but not as much as it is concerning when it comes to exploring who Barry is and how messed up this guy has become.
I would give 7.5/10
There's still cussing that makes me unconfortable, some things that I don't agree with and I feel like the humor doesn't always work with me.
Came for Bill Harder and his performance is just 10/10. Didn't know this man could be this good. Nice to know there are people like this out there.

Thinking about how Willy, Barry, and Bill are the different types of toxic/abusive parenting styles
Bill: emotionally negligent and unavailable, absent, doesn't really parent so much as be a best friend
Barry: more subtly emotionally and psychologically abusive (toxic positivity, gaslighting, setting impossible standards)
Willy: more obviously emotionally and psychologically abusive (public humiliation, direct degradation), negligent overall, physical abuse (attempted drowning, implied instances of hitting Ron)
