I had a mild panic yesterday that the weather might be about to get hot and I’d be left still holding plenty of “ready to drink” autumnal/winter reds. To the Barossa Shiraz rack I headed.... that said, this wine from Ebenezer in the Barossa Valley is an elegant number that’d drink all year round. At only 12.7% abv it has an amazing purity of dark berry fruits accentuated by a very subtle and restrained use of oak. Torbreck Does Dallas! Torbreck winemaker Scott McDonald was in Dallas last night pouring wines from the Torbreck lineup. We tried 5 wines in all. Not surprisingly, my favorite was the outstanding 2015 RunRig Shiraz. While young, this 98-point wine (RP), made from some of the oldest vines in the Barossa (more than 100 years old), was already very enjoyable and will only continue to get better! The 2015 Struie Shiraz represents great value. Priced at a fraction of the RunRig, this wine is a blend of 80-year old vines from the Barossa and 40-year old vines from Eden Valley, which is much cooler. The Eden Valley fruit provides very nice vibrancy and acidity to the wine, which is ready for drinking now with a nice steak, but will certainly last another 8-10 years. The 2012 Steading GSM stood out as well. This is a Grenache-based blend that is also a great value. This wine paired amazingly well with grilled quail a couple weeks ago! I love it when you discover a bottle in your wine rack that you thought was long gone. I was convinced we’d finished our 6 bottles of 2012 Heinrich by @rolfbinderwines but apparently not. I either bought 7 or I’m just crap at counting. This was cracking last night, a blend of Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache from the Barossa Valley. As you’d expect it’s an impactful yet graceful red blend which went very well with my lovingly cooked 9 hour brisket last night. A super wine. I recently came across a little box with some BIG treasures in them. One such treasure was this 2008 Earthworks Barossa Shiraz - Gypsy Black. Open vat fermented and bottled more than a decade ago and it has aged beautifully. It could have gone the other way though, as I was not sure how the wines had been stored, but I am so thankful it survived. Lush dark fruit, hint of savouriness, liquorice and yes, some signs of age. Chateau Yaldara is an Australian winery located near Lyndoch, South Australia in the historic Barossa Valley wine-growing region. The winery was founded by the Hermann Thumm in 1947 after he emigrated to Australia from Europe in 1946. The site chosen for the winery was on the banks of the North Para River at an old flour mill dating back to 1855. The winery was named "Yaldara" after the local aboriginal word meaning "sparkling". After over fifty years ownership, Hermann Thumm sold the winery in 1999 to the wine company McGuigan Wines.
