Chicano Batman Show Two Sides at Brooklyn Steel
Tumblr media
Chicano Batman – Brooklyn Steel – May 9, 2024
We all have seen that optical illusion: You look at it and see an old hag, blink a couple times and the same picture is now of a beautiful lady. In reality, it’s both at the same time. Playing to a raucous crowd at Brooklyn Steel on Thursday night, Chicano Batman were the musical version of this, at points a scintillating rock band, a couple “blinks” of the ear and they were now a dance-ready funk band. And during the strongest moments of the set, they were both at the same time. The opening trio of songs — “Beautiful Daughter,” “Itotiani” and “Freedom Is Free” — hit three distinct bilingual eras of the band’s repertoire, but all mixed elements of rock, soul and funk into an irresistible bass-forward sound.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chicano Batman’s latest album, Notebook Fantasy, is barely a month old, and while they played much of the material over the course of their 100-minute set, it never felt like the focus of the night. No, the set was more about showing the crowd a good time, frontman Bardo Martinez, equal parts Jim Morrison and James Brown, dancing, tumbling and strutting across the stage as he sang and played, at different points, organ, guitar and bass, dressed in a blazer and then, blink a couple times, bare chested.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At times, the rock took center stage, “Magma” going full organ-heavy Doors with appropriately yellow and red lights, and “Losing My Mind” was more ’90s alternative. Then others, the groove dominated, from disco to funk to Funkadelic on “Color My Life,” “Fly” and sexy slow jam “Invisible People.” Hope-you-didn’t-miss-it opener Lido Pimienta joined to duet with Martinez on “Lei La,” another highlight off the new record. The show ended as it began, groove and rock, coexisting on the set-closing “Cycles of Existential Rhyme” and the encore, “Black Lipstick,” simultaneously a hag and a lady and always a good time. —A. [Album + Video] Chicano Batman kündigen neues Album "Notebook Fantasy" an!
Tumblr media
youtube
„‘Fly’ is a song that you hope for as a songwriter”, erzählt Martinez über die erste Auskopplung. “Lighting in a bottle, straight up! It’s the kind that comes organically from the universe, and if you get out of the way, it takes shape effortlessly into the song it needs to be. Like a river flowing and weaving seamlessly through its banks.”

(▶︎ Prism | Say She Sheから)
Prism by Say She She
The highly anticipated debut LP from Say She She (named as a silent nod to Nile Rodgers, C’est chi-chi!: It's Chic!), the all female discodelic soul band, will transport you with their dreamy harmonies, catchy hooks and up tempo grooves! The ladies of Say She She deliver a mesmerizing vocal performance, weaving their voices together in an elegant, haunting style that incorporates earworm melodies, lush harmonies, playful adlibs, and climactic hindi riffs accented with operatic cries that will reel you in and lift you into their otherworldly ether. The band's sound is a hat tip to late 70’s girl groups with the three strong female lead voices of Piya Malik (El Michels Affair staple feature, and former backing singer for Chicano Batman), Sabrina Mileo Cunningham and Nya Gazelle Brown at the epicenter of a roaring roster of musicians including former members of the Dap-Kings, The Extraordinaires, the house band at Ronnie Scotts and members of underground cult-funk band Orgone. Pulling sounds from every corner of their record collections, Say She She is a multi- dimensional, multicultural, multi-instrumental, collaborative melting pot. Think Donna Summer meets The Rotary Connection with a sprinkling of Asha Puthli backed by members of the Meters. During the pandemic, the band found themselves making their debut LP- polishing off songs made on old tape machines in the basement studios of friends, and this September will see their much-awaited debut album, to be released via Karma Chief / Colemine Records. The largely self-produced debut album ‘Prism’ features contributions from Dap Kings Joey Crispiano & Victor Axelrod, Max Shrager (The Shacks), Bardo Martinez (Chicano Batman), Nikhil Yearwadekar (former Antibalas), Andy Bauer (Twin Shadow), and Matty McDermot (NYPMH), and is already one of the most anticipated records of the year. クレジット2022年10月7日リリース

Chicano Batman Live Preview: 6/30, No Cap Shows
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Last year, L.A. psychedelic soul band Chicano Batman released their much anticipated follow-up to 2017′s excellent Freedom Is Free, one of our favorite albums of that year. It’s a shame that the band was unable to celebrate last year’s Invisible People (out via ATO) like we saw them do Freedom Is Free. However, they’re touring this fall and have a live stream tonight at 8 PM CST via No Cap Shows, recorded at the Roxy in Los Angeles. (Some of the proceeds will benefit the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, which helps music industry professionals who need money.) Just in time for the stream, today, they dropped two new songs, “Dark Star” (along with an Anders Ericsson-directed video) and its B-side “Pastel Sunrise”. Both songs came together in producer John Hill’s studio; the former sports the band’s penchant for combining warped grooves with lyrics that prop humanism as a way to overcome sociopolitical trauma, while the latter’s a slice of sinewy, yet sunny nü Tropicália.
Who knows what they’ll play tonight, but I’ll guess one or both of these new songs, much of Invisible People, and the hits from Freedom Is Free. A wildcard? Tracks from lead singer Bardo Martinez’s fantastically funky, hip-hop-influenced, occasionally auto-tuned upcoming debut solo LP Everywhere Reminds Me Of Space, released under the moniker BARDO via his own label Yemayá Sol Records.

9:30 INTERVIEW: Carlos Arevalo of Chicano Batman
9:30 Club got the chance to chat with Carlos Arevalo, guitarist of “LA’s House Band,” Chicano Batman, who will be playing the venue this Wednesday, October 4.
Erin Jones [9:30 Club]: For those who don’t know your music, how would you describe your style?
Carlos Arévalo [Chicano Batman]: It’s a mix of soul, psychedelia, rock, and funk. Our influences range from Os Mutantes, Jimi Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Television to Rigo Tovar, Fela Kuti, and William Onyeabor to name a few.
Most of you are from Los Angeles, except Gabriel Villa. What catalyzed the creation of your ensemble?
Bardo formed the band with Gabriel and Eduardo after meeting at various music venues and parties in Los Angeles. They bonded musically over their love for latin soul ballads, oldies, caetano veloso, and cumbia and decided to make a band in 2008. I was asked to join the band in 2011 so Bardo could focus more on singing and playing organ live and in the studio.
Some people consider being Jack White’s touring support as the turning point in your career - do you agree or disagree? How have things changed since then?
We’d agree, it was a turning point. We went from being a regional favorite selling out tiny clubs to a national touring band playing in front of up to 12,000 people a night in basketball arenas during the Jack White tour. We gained national attention in the press for being selected to open his shows and that helped turn new fans on to us. Simultaneously, we also landed a spot at Coachella 2015 which had a similar effect of raising our profile nationally. After years of honing our craft in LA, the universe dealt us a hand signifying the time was right to go and take music and show to the next level.
youtube
Let’s talk about Freedom is Free, your most recent album. What are some of the themes explored on this politically-charged piece of work?
The overarching thesis of Freedom Is Free is to remain fearless and free in your mind, body, and soul in the face of oppression or adversity. It’s meant to be a message promoting positivity and empowerment. Other specific themes addressed on the new record are police brutality in the song “La Jura” and environmental injustice in the song “The Taker Story.” There are also more traditional themes like love and loss explored on the record as well.
Can you talk about your creative process, in terms of who writes and how the songs come to be?
We all write music in the band. Bardo writes most of the lyrics save for the songs Eduardo sings, in that case Eduardo usually writes the lyrics, except for “La Jura,” in which they both wrote the lyrics. For this album the process began with Bardo and I getting together and going over many of his demos and some of my demos of songs we felt would make a collective statement for the album. Once we tightened up the guitar and organ parts and his lyrics, we brought the songs to Gabriel and Eduardo and we completed the initial arrangement process and brought the songs to life. Additionally, this album differed from our others in that Leon Michels, the producer, lent his ideas on how to make our songs better and we listened to him.
You have played both D.C. and 9:30 Club before. Do you have anything in particular that you are excited for with your upcoming headlining visit?
We’ve played D.C. several times and each time the shows have been sold out! Our first humble show took place at a Salvadoran restaurant, called Haydees in Mount Pleasant in 2014, that was followed by two shows at the 9:30 Club opening for Gogol Bordello on New Year’s 2016, then DC9 in summer 2016, and then lastly we played Rock & Roll Hotel in early 2017 when Freedom Is Free came out.
We are humbled and excited to be playing the 9:30 Club as headliners. It is a standout venue in the US. The staff is very nice, the stage and sound is great, and they serve you cupcakes backstage. I rarely buy merch from venues but I had to get my 9:30 Club shirt because the experience was so great when we last played. Every time I wear that shirt people always stop me and mention how awesome the venue is.
What can you tell us about what’s next for Chicano Batman?
There will be more touring next year and in our time off the road we’ll get started on writing the next record.
-Erin Jones

Chicano Batman Get Psychedelic at Webster Hall
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chicano Batman – Webster Hall – December 14, 2021
“We are Chicano Batman from Disneyland, California,” said singer Bardo Martinez, introducing the band tongue-in-cheek right as their set ended. While all four members of the Los Angeles–based band have roots south of the border, the band name is a slight misnomer (drummer Gabriel Villa is from Columbia). But they met at various parties and bonded over their shared love of a wide array of music, from Frank Zappa to Caetano Veloso’s 1972 Tropicália classic, Transa. Their own music pulls from those diverse influences and speaks often to the power of music bringing people together and the liberation that comes from that unity. And there’s no better time to celebrate getting together than a sunsetting 2021—when the times have been, well … you know—as fans did at a sold-out Webster Hall on Tuesday night.
The performance kicked off with the jaunty “Cycles of Existential Rhyme.” “The New Year’s passed it’s almost done / My present situation is this song,” sang Bardo Martinez. The bandmates swapped the spotlight shining through brightly on different songs. “Moment of Joy,” reminiscent of fellow modern-day psychedelic travelers Tame Impala, walking the fine line between trippy and sexy, was topped off with a cutting guitar solo from Carlos Arévalo. The catchy “Freedom Is Free” was made whole with the joyous bounce of Eduardo Arenas’s buoyant bassline, while the fast-paced “Manuel’s Story” was a refugee’s tale that felt like the song was chasing him down. “They were ready to take my life that day / That’s why I live right here 500 miles away,” sang Martinez. “Invisible People,” which sings to the liberation of immigrants, followed just before “Itotiani,” a ballad sung gorgeously by Martinez and with some assistance from the audience on the chorus.
The set then shot into the depths of space with “It’s a Balloon,” an organ-heavy tune reminiscent of Syd Barrett–era Pink Floyd. Chicano Batman returned to space several times throughout their psychedelic set. For “Polymetronomic Harmony” Martinez was in harmony with the audience, crowd-surfing over them. The show ended with “Black Lipstick,” a fan favorite that had all hips moving and Webster Hall feeling like the happiest place on earth. —Dan Rickershauer | @D4nRicks

What are some books you would recommend then?
uhhh okay, this just looking at my bookshelf & trying to stick with things published in the last year or so. most of these writers are on their second or third (or, like, fucking SEVENTH) book though so i would definitely encourage you to check out other stuff by them as well (i bolded the authors whose other writings i dig)!
[a general tip - if you like the tone or style of a book, find out who that author’s agent is and see who else they rep, or check out other books by that publisher/imprint (like, Graywolf Press publishes a lot of unconventional, interesting works in all genres). another tip, usually the whatever book wins the Booker Prize is the one that Did The Most that year, so it’s always good to check out the winner and the long/shortlist. The longlist for 2020 was just announced but i’ve only read like 2 on it so far.]
i tried to include content warnings for what i could remember/think of but be careful and take care of yourself!!!
