So I started the dub of Fruits Basket again.

Forgetting, of course, that the primary theme is about life changing and having to be okay with letting go of the past even though the future is uncertain.

More importantly, forgetting that one of the main threads of this throughout the series is Tohru's grief (and guilt) over her mother's death.

Well, you know what, my therapist told me to engage with grief as homework the past couple of weeks, so between this and starting Anohana again I THINK IT COUNTS.

#musings #bandit liveblogs #bandit liveblogs furuba #i know i could have just skipped to when my murderous akii shows up but #fruits basket is one of my defining pieces of media #the manga more than the anime although the new anime does a FANTASTIC job of adapting it #(they cut a bunch out of the third season which feels weird after everything to that point is pretty much #an exact chapter by chapter adaptation of the manga #BUT #the part i was most upset about being cut got turned into the movie so) #but like #fruits basket as a story influenced so much of how i write and conceive of people and etc. #the manga is very much about everybody has reasons for why they do what they do #everyone is broken #even if they don't show it #even if it shows up in different ways #and i remember when it first started coming out how there was a group of us reading it who had our own characters #i was hiro (although i wanted to be kisa i think) #we didn't get far enough in before i moved #i know now that akito is me #in danganronpa terms - tohru is ryoko to akito's junko #akito is nothing like junko i need you to understand #but in terms of foils to each other and what they represent and how they interact with the zodiac #tohru is light and warmth and hope #akito is constrictive and dark and despair #i just #ugh i love furuba #i love furuba so much #noir is my favorite anime but fruits basket is my manga and left the biggest impact

The Somas....That’s saying there’s more than just you two in the area, or that your family is so big you guys aren’t the only ones in this city.  Just who are you folks?  Who are the Soma(Sohma?)? Just how much land do you guys own/The Other Soma own?  You just get more and more mysterious as we go.

I still stand that Momma Tohru is way too thin to have ever had a child.  Like she is a lot thinner that Tohru is now and she seems way too young.   Something ain’t adding up here.  Unless it’s anime logic, I shouldn’t question anime logic.  TTGL taught me that

She seriously looks like she’s just about to knock out, I really don’t think she has any energy left for anything.  She should just lie down and sleep it off, maybe call in sick to school and work.  If she has a phone.  Oh my god, does she have a phone or any way to talk with people without going to a payphone? Would she even have phone signal so far out there?  I wonder what her wallpaper would be? Probably a picture of her and her mom happy

Sweetie, no.  I know school is somewhat important, but your health comes first.  You get in your sleeping bag right now and go to sleep.  You need the rest.  Just do them in the morning before going to school. Wait where does Tohru bathe?  No really, does she just go to the river and bathe there?

Sweetie noooooo, you’re too weak right now to keep pushing yourself,  Stop, really just stop and sleep your body is telling you that it’s done, that it needs to recover.  Don’t keep pushing so hard.

Oh boy, looks like she’s been had.  The Soma boys now know the truth and are just waiting, probably wondering how long she’s been here.   Hopefully not angry she lied to them.  Well not really lied lied, more like she forgot to tell them where she living exactly.

They just look confused and a little saddened by the revelation, if anything they’re probably wondering how to help her in this situation.  Right now Tohru is technically a criminal for living in private property without consent of the owners.  These two know that, but they also know she’s living on hard times and didn’t know this was their families lands.

Oh no it’s worse than I thought! Tohru is so sick she’s reverting back to a previous animation style!  This is bad.  If she doesn’t get help she might go back to black and white!  The mouse is getting his bat ready, Tohru go back to your more soft and sleeker look we don’t have time!

Fruits Basket is just one of those shows that does what it does so well that I feel no desire to write fanfic for it.

It is by no means perfect, nor is it the best paced thing I've seen (which honestly might be Haunting of Hill House), but it's complete in a way that a lot of other stuff isn't.

I know there's a short sequel manga! I don't need it! I haven't read it! (I think I've tried and didn't get very far.)

It's just. beautiful as it is.

I don't need - or even want - to add anything more to it.

There are so few stories like this.

(For me, anyway.)

also tohru's mom is also named kyoko and her grandfather calls her by her mom's name so that tohru can at least be reminded that she existed because the rest of the family hates her so that's a thing
