there's so many things in tsc that just come at you all at once, so it's hard to focus on just one thing to break down, but the most glaring thing that stood out to me is how hard it is to really put someone back together. especially someone so shattered that it's nigh impossible to glue them back and pray they don't crumble under your ministrations.
if jean is neil's foil, then jeremy is andrew's direct antithesis. whereas andrew is a steady bedrock because he's been broken too many times to know how to weather the storm, jeremy is too soft hands and an even softer soul. he cares and cares and cares. so empathetic and so gentle it almost breaks your heart. you pray for the impossibility that jeremy can survive knowing the truth because if he doesn't, then what hope does jean have? so you pray he can be steady too. that he can weather the storm as well. that he will not break when knowing that just under the surface lies shark-infested waters.
but then you remember the beginning. "even knowing everything could go completely sideways, you'd make that choice every time"
in every other universe, jean has not survived. but in every other universe, he did not have the trojans.

Ùna have you ever gone/would you ever go fishing? If so, favorite catch?
[ID. a greyscale drawing of Ùna, who has medium brown skin, a birthmark on her face and short dark hair. she's smiling, looking to the left and wearing a wool jumper. there's a screen-tone image of an arctic charr, labelled røye, besides the speech bubbles that read: "i had a few times before meeting ava, but i was mostly too busy with art college and didn't have any gear for it either anyway so... not much. but here it's easier, with the little rowboat to go out on. or we stand in the rivers and wait for the fish and end up just watching.. last time we went out on the boat we managed to catch two røye*. it took the whole day, though." End ID.]

some things that are almost guaranteed to result in me being hooked onto a song is like. violins and acoustic guitars and pianos SPECIFICALLY when you can hear the effort- like clanks and squeaks and thunks that can't be entirely avoided in playing a physical instrument. there's a quality to it that really can't be isolated or replicated artificially. even with shit like synths or electric guitars sometimes you can HEAR the physicality of the instrument. does this make any sense at all

"The coral reefs of south Sulawesi are some of the most diverse, colorful and vibrant in the world. At least, they used to be, until they were decimated by dynamite fishing in the 1990s.
As part of a team of coral reef ecologists based in Indonesia and the UK, we study the reefs around Pulau Bontosua, a small Indonesian island in south Sulawesi...
In many places around the world, damage like this might be described as irreparable. But at Pulau Bontosua, the story is different. Here, efforts by the Mars coral restoration program have brought back the coral and important ecosystem functions, as outlined by our new study, published in Current Biology. We found that within just four years, restored reefs grow at the same rate as nearby healthy reefs.
Speedy recovery
The transplanted corals grow remarkably quickly. Within a year, fragments have developed into proper colonies. After two years, they interlock branches with their neighbors. After just four years, they completely overgrow the reef star structures and restoration sites are barely distinguishable from nearby healthy reefs.
The combined growth of many corals generates a complex limestone (calcium carbonate) framework. This provides a habitat for marine life and protects nearby shorelines from storm damage by absorbing up to 97% of coastal wave energy.
We measured the overall growth of the reef framework by calculating its carbonate budget. That's the balance between limestone production (by calcifying corals and coralline algae) and erosion (by grazing sea urchins and fishes, for example). A healthy reef produces up to 20kg of reef structure per square meter per year, while a degraded reef is shrinking rather than growing as erosion exceeds limestone production. Therefore, overall reef growth gives an indication of reef health.
At Pulau Bontosua, our survey data shows that in the years following restoration, coral cover, coral colony sizes, and carbonate production rates tripled. Within four years, restored reefs were growing at the same speed as healthy reefs, and thereby provided the same important ecosystem functions...
Outcomes of any reef restoration project will depend on environmental conditions, natural coral larvae supply, restoration techniques and the effort invested in maintaining the project. This Indonesian project shows that when conditions are right and efforts are well placed, success is possible. Hopefully, this inspires further global efforts to restore functioning coral reefs and to recreate a climate in which they can thrive."

Merman!Aventurine who gets found by you while out on a fishing trip but instead of a fish you came back with an injured half human half fish
Merman!Aventurine who can't fit anywhere in your house apart from the bathtub so you make sure the water isn't too hot or cold before putting the injured merman inside
Merman!Aventurine who definitely doesn't trust you at first upon awakening well he starts barring his white sharp teeth at you that are comparable to that of a shark well now you have a hissy mermaid inside of your bathtub
Merman!Aventurine who slowly warms up to you after you attend his wounds and try to feed him some food
Merman!Aventurine who upon closer inspection has the prettiest scales on his tail that are comparable to that of a certain gemstone that he shares a 'name' with
Merman!Aventurine whose beauty cannot be described by any word in the world the closest word was probably ethereal
Merman!Aventurine whose wounds have recovered but when you let him go at sea again he refuses being too attached to you
Merman!Aventurine who goes rather reluctantly as you made a point to him saying how the other people in your society might try hurting him if anyone ever saw him so he leaves but promises to come back to see you
Merman!Aventurine who returns and gives you some treasures that he's found while at sea
Merman!Aventurine who uses the fact that you don't know anything about mermaids and their culture to court you, those gifts he's been giving you well their meant for courting and if he sees that you've turned one of the many gem stones or seashells into a necklace well maybe next time if you fall into the ocean who's to say you'll return to land again if Aventurine saves you
Note: might rewrite this as I wrote it while on 3-4 hours of sleep and might write a siren Aventurine hcs soon

Rating Seal Emojis
Somewhat of a tired format but i still enjoy it so i decided to do one myself?
These sweet thangs don't have much history, as the seal emoji was only added in 2021, but there's still enough to go around so let's go.
Apple iOS
Looks to be evocative of a really grey baby seal. It's quite sweet but i dont like that it has shoulders. 7/10
Google Android
Actually biased, but this is easily one of the cutest. I can excuse the undefined flippers. 10/10
Samsung 2.5
Like trying to redraw the Google emoji from memory. The features seem weirdly disconnected from each other. 5/10
Samsung 6.0
They went back, and decided it needed to be cuter, which they overdid, but who's to say it didn't work? 100% baby thing. Hind flippers are way small though 7/10
Windows 11 2021
Feels more evocative of a baby harp seal than the other ones. The tail makes what i can only describe as a "Seal Bident" and the front flippers are closest to the sleeves of a wavy blouse, but above all, it's JOYFUL and y'know what, i love the energy 9/10
Windows 11 November Update
...and then this came in. There's nothing wrong with this one per se but just compare the previous one! They took its joy and made it some kind of undefined mystery species. 5/10
Microsoft 3D Fluent
It's just the last one, but in 3D. Purple is a pretty novel color to shade a seal with but it doesn't add much, and the definition 3Dness gives it makes it feel weirder. 5/10
WhatsApp
"A seal is just like if you put a dog head on a fish, right?" I can't find a single species of phocid that has this coloration making me think they found an Australian sea lion and went "good enough". Ironically, this one also has the most accurate pose and flipper detail, so it's kind of a net zero. 7/10
Twitter
Sea lion! The tail is a hand and while usually that could be fun and interesting this emoji is going for accuracy and it just makes that fall apart a little bit. 8/10
Facebook
Standing tall and proud! This emoji, while recognizing how the hind flippers are placed, seems to forget the tail resulting in Smooth Barbie Crotch for seals. Front flippers bend real weird too. 8/10
