Okay for the wip game: green!
A very rough idea for an AU where Lasky and the Infinity go rogue. Tried to make it easy to read and skip the notes, but eh. It's rough, what can I say.
---
He didn't like it.
He'd spent the entire slipspace trip trying to justify the orders. Trying to rationalize them.
He'd done the same thing when Osman had ordered him to execute Dr. Halsey.
Not execute...to murder.
Since [Last Major Thing...Covenant war?], there had been a few years of relative peace. Something Thomas hadn't seen since Circinus...
But something in the back of his mind told him it wouldn't last, and sure enough as soon as the outer colonies had approached the UEG and asked for independence (something something the UEG goes oh hah yeah fucking right losers) the Insurrection had once more boiled into a full-blown war. And this time, the insurrectionists had new allies; former Covenant were all too happy to supply the Insurrectionists with weapons and ships (something the UNSC hasn't been able to put down the rebellion or at least keep it in check near as well? as they had prior to the covenant war, so they decide to bring Infinity in for another refit, add a bunch of PDCs and idk maybe replace the spine mounted mac cannons with something like the covenant's plasma weapons? The ones u can steer using magnets so the ship doesn't have to turn or whatever)
The bridge was silent. Nobody moved from their post, the crew simply stayed in place, looking at him expectantly.
(Lasky spends the whole trip to X system agonizing over his order to slap down a whole colony just bc they want to be left alone, and can't find a way to rationalize it. Does he hear rumors that others share his discontent with their orders? Sarah would take his side and probably grouse abt it. Infinity gets to X system and Communication with the colony is had, at which point Lasky decides that court martial is better than having blood on his hands over this bullshit. Maybe FLEETCOM is all like Lasky why the fuck arent you mopping the floor w these colonists yet and he just straight up says he's not gonna and cuts transmission, 'you'll have to replace me' or smth.)
"Sir," Roland said as his avatar appeared in the holotank "I think I speak for the crew when I say we're with you."
(Lasky is anxious but this decision feels much better, especially with support from the crew and Palmer, he prepares to make his move)
"Roland, please mark all UNSC assets not attached to Infinity as 'hostile'."
"Yes, sir!" he replied. Almost instantly, a cascade of markers flipping from green to read spread outward from the Infinity's immediate vicinity.
(radio chatter goes from routine to surprised chaos as UNSC and Insurrectionists realize that the Infinity's IFF has changed, along with the IFF tags of almost all of her compliment of ships)
"Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war." Tom muttered quietly.
(break?)
"Fire at will! Aim to disable, not to kill!"
(Something PDCs firing looks like 'strings of golden stitches across the black tapestry of space')

Happy Birthday Scottish dart player Peter Wright.
Peter was born in Livingston on March 10th 1970, but spent most of his childhood in England, he chose the country of his birth as his home nation when playing darts and helped Scotland win their first World Cup of Darts title in June 2019, defeating the Republic of Ireland 3-1 in the final in Hamburg.
Originally a qualifier for the 1996 Lakeside Championship, it would be more than a decade before Scottish-born Wright joined the PDC circuit on a full-time basis, he has since given up his job as a tyre fitter and gone from strength to strength.
After making progress up the rankings during 2011 and 2012 - which included his maiden ranking title at a Players Championship in Killarney - the following year saw Wright reach his first televised semi-final at the UK Open. He went on to reach the 2014 World Championship final, losing out to Michael van Gerwen but securing himself a spot in the Premier League and World Series of Darts, where he reached the final on his debut in Dubai.
The most colourful character on the circuit - with wife Jo, a hairdresser by trade, providing the painted hair to match his unique dress sense - Wright’s rise to third in the world included him being a finalist in back-to-back UK Opens and World Series of Darts Finals in 2015 & 2016 as well as in the PDC World Cup of Darts and a World Series event in Japan.
Wright began 2017 in style as he followed up an appearance in the World Championship semi-finals with three UK Open Qualifier wins, before going on to finally claim victory on the big stage with his triumph in the UK Open finals in Minehead, where he saw off Gerwyn Price in the final.
Three European Tour triumphs followed a treble of UK Open Qualifier victories, while Wright also claimed a Players Championship victory to consolidate his status as world number three in a brilliant start to 2017.
Wright went on to reach the Premier League Play-Offs for the first time in May 2017, finishing second in the final league table before defeating Taylor in the semi-finals, but he would pay for six missed match darts as Van Gerwen edged a thrilling final.
The Scottish ace claimed a European Tour title at the start of July 2017, before reaching the final of the World Matchplay later that month, only to lose out to Taylor in his last appearance on the Blackpool stage.
Wright picked up another European Tour win, followed by the German Darts Masters World Series crown, before going down to van Gerwen in the final of the Grand Slam of Darts in November 2017.
Having reached the final of the 2018 World Cup of Darts in June, Wright then won a first title of the year at Players Championship 14 in Wigan and then claimed his second World Series triumph at the Melbourne Darts Masters.
Wright backed up his Australian success with a third title of the year at Players Championship 17 in Barnsley in September and reached the World Grand Prix final for the first time the following month, losing out to Van Gerwen.
In the World Championship in December 2020 Wright survived a match dart at bullseye to win a sudden-death leg against Noel Malicdem in the second round, before beating Seigo Asada and Jeffrey de Zwaan, to reach the quarter-finals, where he triumphed 5–3 over Humphries to reach the semi-final for the first time since 2017 where he played Welshman Gerwyn Price winning through 6-3 in a bad tempered match.
In the final he again met Michael van Gerwen and won 7–3 in the final to become the 2020 World Darts Champion on January 1st.
In a season that was affected by the covid pandemic Wright picked up two of darts “majors” winning the Masters in February and  2020 Unibet European Championship in November, beating England’s James Wade 11-4 in the final. However  Wright had a poor showing at the Grand Slam failing to get through from the group stages, he later admitted it hit him hard and said “ I could have walked away from the sport quite easily.“ His form improved in his next event  with a run to the semi-finals of the Players Championship Finals  making him just the third player in history (after Michael van Gerwen and Phil Taylor) to exceed £1,000,000 on the order of merit.  Peter returned to defend his world title but Peter was eliminated in the third round after losing 4–3 to Gabriel Clemens who became the first ever German player to reach the fourth round. But Peter was back on top at this years  2022 PDC World Darts Championship on January 3rd, only the third Scot to win it twice, the others being, Gary Anderson and  Jocky Wilson, who will be featuring in a post later in the month.
Peter is currently ranked No. 2 in the world, he went out in the third round of the World Championship, he bounced back to win the 2023 Nordic Darts Masters in January, but just got knocked out the UK Open last Saturday to Welshman Richie Burnett, a shock for Snakebite, Burnett sitting at a lowly 71 in the rankings

Midnight Binge: The Nevers (Mid-Season Final)
Beautifully crafted, witty, magical, and filled with secrets, The Nevers, an HBO show created by Joss Whedon (who stepped down as director/executive producer in November 2020), is an epic tale that follows a growing group of Victorian women and minorities (as well as those living on the fringes of London society) who find themselves in the possession of special powers. On today’s midnight binge, we’re taking a look at the world, people, politics, and the production of The Nevers.
Obviously, spoilers!
Tumblr media
THE TOUCHED
After an unprecedented event in London gives women and minorities remarkable abilities, the Touched, as they are called, or at other times, the afflicted. They resort to living at an orphanage because of their turns (or powers) called St. Romaulda’s Orphanage, which becomes a home and sanctuary for the Touched. This sanctuary is sponsored by Lavinia Bidlow, the wealthy benefactor who has ulterior motives behind keeping a close eye on the touched. The sanctuary is run by Amalia True, who not only can see the future but tries to keep her charges safe while harboring her own secrets that she keeps very tight to her chest.
Tumblr media
The Touched are typically women, or individuals, who live on the fringes of society. Their turns differ from one person to another. There is healing, premonition, molecular alterations and manipulation, and the ability to see and manipulate electricity. There is uncertainty surrounding how a turn is chosen for a person, i.e. why does one person see electricity over causing something to explode? Is it similar to the way Inhumans from the Marvel Universe (shows like S.H.E.I.L.D and Inhumans), in which the power is created because the world needs it, as in fixing a lack of balance? Or is it genetics or even personality-based? Or somehow wholly random? Because we sort of know-how, the turns were giving out and even a bit of why.
The manifestation of the Touched flips the hierarchy or more specifically the patriarchy, on its head, and unfortunately because of the kinds of people that ended up getting turns, women, immigrants, and other types of people who live at the fringes of society basically those who are seen as less than or inconsequential in society. This splits people into factions and even radicals, including Lavinia, and the ins and outs of London politics, which is being spearheaded by an ex-military and high government official, Lord Gilbert Massen.
THE GALANTHI
The Galanthi are an alien race who flew over London causing the Touched. Their mission was to give humans the means to save a ravaged Earth. Like how London is split into fractions, so were the military organizations that were against or for the Galanthi doing what they were doing, the Planetary Defense Coalition (PDC) who were for, and FreeLife Army who were against. The FreeLife Army attacked the Galanthi and killed 19 after bombing their project stations. The last station was run by a woman named Zephyr who committed suicide which allowed her soul to be placed on the last ship. Amalia, then Mary, was Touched just as she committed suicide which allowed Zephyr to enter her body and they changed their name to Amalia True.
PRODUCTION
HBO’s The Nevers was announced for a series in July 2018. Whedon became the creator, director, executive producer, and showrunner of the series. A bidding war started between a number of stations, including Netflix, before being picked up by HBO. Executive producers and writers included Bernie Caulfield, Jane Espenson, and Doug Petrie and later Laurie Penny, Melissa Iqbal, Madhuri Shekar, Kevin Lau, Daniel S. Kaminsky, and Hennah Sekandary. In November, Whedon stepped down as showrunner, director, and executive director, stating “unprecedented challenges” and exhaustion as his reason for stepping back. However, he was “deeply proud of the work” on The Nevers. Whedon was replaced by Philippa Goslett as the new series showrunner. Gemma Jackson would serve as a production designer and Christine Blundell as a make-up designer.
CAST
Laura Donnelly (Claudia Black), Ann Skelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Pip Torrens, Denis O’Hare, Amy Manson, Rochelle Neil, Zackary Momoh, Eleanor Tomlinson, Nick Frost, Elizabeth Berrington, Viola Prettejohn, Anna Devlin, Kiran Sonia Sawar, Ben Chaplin, Ella Smith, and Vinnie Heaven were billed as the main cast as The Nevers.
FILMING
Filming, production, and principal photography started in 2019. Locations varied in London, such as Trinity Church Square, Southwark Borough, New Wimbledon Theatre, Charterhouse Square, The Mall, Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Historic Dockyard Chatham, and more. In January 2020, filming took place at the Joyce Grove country house estate; January also saw production and filming temporarily cease because of COVID-19. Scenes had to be reworked to accommodate new rules and regulations because of COVID restrictions, such as the Maladies execution scene, which utilized CGI effects and green screen methods to make it seem like more people within the given space. It also saw the set be rebuilt entirely on a soundstage because they couldn’t film on location. Production and filming were picked up again around September and wrapped up for its mid-season final.
Originally, season one was meant to have ten episodes. However, that was scarped for a two-part season, allowing for a mid-season final at episode six. As of June 11, 2021, The Nevers has not been picked up for a second season, nor has it been canceled.
CONCLUSIONS
I’ve enjoyed The Nevers so far and it was just getting good with its mid-season final. However, the first few episodes were a bit bumpy, and the foundation is built, but it’s taking some time to stitch everything together cohesively. I have hopes for the later episodes and do wish for a second season. I rate the show thus far a 3.9/5, I always give a bit of leniency when it comes to the first season of any show because nothing is really fleshed out. There are very few first seasons of the series I thoroughly enjoyed with little complaint, but I have high ambitions for this show and desire to see it do better.
What are your thoughts on The Nevers? Do you like it, or do you have some issues with the show?
UPDATE
As of December 16th, 2022, The Nevers has been canceled and subsequently pulled from its streaming platform (HBO Max).

So as you know I’m rereading twlg religiously, and I am dying to know what Jaemin was thinking in this moment in part 4,
“You crane your neck to look at Jamin who wears an expression you struggle to recognise, your stomach dropping when he doesn't even look you in the eyes. Did you do something? Is something wrong? You feel yourself start to panic but you try to maintain a normal face. Fuck, what's going on? Why is the silence so deafening? Jaemin raises his head to finally meet your eyes, the pair of you staring at each other in silence before he gives you a tight lipped smile, reaching down to rub your lower back comfortingly. "Let's get you cleaned up"
-🤍
this will be talked abt in part six!!!!
but i think i mentioned when this part first came out that he was experiencing pdc (postcoital dysphoria) which is where you feel low and down after intense sexual activity! (this is when jaemin made the reader call him daddy and fucked her throat etc) its a completely normal thing to experience and i wanted to bring light to the topic.

Trans darts star faces “insane” backlash after winning titles against both men & women in same week
Dutch darts sensation Noa-Lyn van Leuven is facing backlash after historic back-to-back victories against both men and women in the same week. Last week, the 27-year-old won the mixed PDC Challenge Tour in Germany, defeating several past male winners. She’s the first woman to win an event in the series, one level below the sport’s top tier. Related: Trans athlete in New Zealand denied entry to women’s darts tournament “They’re barring me from playing. They’re breaching human rights instead of allowing inclusion.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Darts-Deutschland (@darts.universe) Global perspectives delivered right to your inbox Our newsletter bridges borders to bring you LGBTQ+ news from around the world. Daily * Weekly * Good News * Van Leuven then played a women’s event in the UK on Saturday, defeating two highly placed veteran players, including the current No. 1 woman, Beau Greaves. After that quarter-final victory, van Leuven went on to dispatch Ireland’s Katie Sheldon in the final. Controversy has since courted van Leuven’s historic wins. “No male bodies in women’s sports please, not even in darts,” out tennis legend Martina Navratilova, a vocal opponent of trans inclusion in women’s sports, wrote on X. “Again, women get the short end of the stick and it stinks.” Two of van Leuven’s teammates, Anca Zijlstra and Aileen de Graaf, quit over her presence on the Dutch squad, citing disagreement over rules around trans inclusion. “That moment when you’re embarrassed to come out for the Dutch team, because a biological man is playing on the women’s team, it’s time to go,” Zijlstra posted to Facebook. “I have tried to accept this but I can’t approve or validate this.” “In sports, there should be an equal and fair playing field,” Zijlstra added. “I hope with all my heart and for all women in sports that people come to their senses.” De Graff said van Leuven was free to “change and be happy,” but explained, “I just don’t think it’s right for a biological man to throw for the women or vice-versa. It’s either mixed or not.” Trans journalist and activist Erin Reed wasn’t convinced a trans woman could have any advantage in the sport. “Transgender women have a biological advantage at… Darts? That’s what is being claimed by a few people who are trying to get Noa-Lynn Van Leuven removed from a women’s darts team. There is no evidence transgender women are better at angles and throwing a dart.” Transgender women have a biological advantage at… Darts? She’s described the mostly online debate about her darts success as “insane” but says it’s not getting in her way.  “I just go out and do the thing I love. It gives me joy.” http://dlvr.it/T4c4VN

Hello, friend!! Can I call you that? I'm not sure... I'm so sorry I didn't send an ask sooner! How have you been? I hope you've been well! Make sure you've been getting plenty of rest and water, and please do take breaks if you need them! I'm sure your event has been stressful to manage, and I've heard you had a lot of alt blogs on top of that! That's quite the juggle!
Please do fill me in on what's been going on since my last asks to you, my birds only tell me so much. No pressure, of course, but I feel as though you deserve to at least reflect on your accomplishments! Doesn't everyone need a confidence boost like that?
~🌻 Sunflower Anon, who has missed you dearly!
Sorry it's taken me a few days to answer you! I wasn't ignoring you or anything, just wasn't too up to answering and wanted to answer you properly! Always nice to see you too!
Hello! And sure! I'm perfectly ok with you calling me friend if you'd like! ^-^
And no worries about taking a bit to send another ask, send them whenever you want to and are feeling up to, don't feel bad if its awhile in between!
I have been ok, sometimes stuff can get too much so I try to step back for a bit and go with the flow a bit and focus on being ok again :3 The same goes back at you! Make sure to get enough rest and drink water and take care of yourself as well! ^-^
The event hasn't been too bad to manage, I most do things in the background, occasionally pull some strings and keep things organized as much as I can, which works great, I much prefer to work behind the scenes (While I am not opposed to spotlight, theres simply something nice about keeping all the lil details of something organized :3)
I certainly have a good few (not as many as SOMEONE I know, yes, I mean you Moonlight, they keep growing) But most of them don't get as much virtual traffic to them so I mostly do things on two 70% of the time which are this one and my main side one jestersdlc
Two other's are ask blogs, and those don't get asks too frequently so they mostly just chill there :3
And the last (known) one is a group one and that one is pretty slow on us all to update it, so it's not toooo bad :3 I can't remember exactly when your last ask was...(time wise I mean >_<) So I'll try my best! Not sure there's much to say tho :3
Idk if PDC was made before or after...but me and a pair of friends (whom you may know, Qwill and Sol) made an au blog called playdatecollectorau where we kinda shove a bunch of our au's together so we can have our beans have 'playdates' theres LORE of course, cause lore is awesome
Mostly just intro stuff on there atm but it's fun to have and plan
I have accumulated....more AU's, there is...so many for DCA au's there is....10 and a half (the half is PDC) (JDCAU, J-TOL, LOTC, MIW, LSAU, REDACTED, NBCau, ESSau, CTAMK and secret) along with a few TSAM's ones which there is...less of 3 and a half (Starboy, CuddleBug, SolarMoon and Dream Eater (which is the half cause its...all encompassing lets say)
And just recently got the SolarAndMoon blog up and running which is nice, they look real squishy
I have a couple little projects on the go or completed as well, a few oneshots have been posted (mostly on my side blog...) and am currently working on a mini series for Aromantic awareness week!
Certain characters are being...uncooperative...but I shall figure something out! (...moreso idk much on certain beans yet so its making it finicky to write them >_<)
and IT IS ARO WEEK NOW! ٩(^ᗜ^ )و ´-
So that is exciting, excuse to wear green (one of my favorite colors) and spread awareness for aromanticism! Its great :3
AND new pronouns! Idk if you popped in last before or after that but that was a funky thing, I now use she/they and ey/em/eir so thats fun! ^-^
And I have a few lil secret projects of course :3
I think that sums everything up.....sorry for the really long response! Hopefully you don't mind >_<
I'm in ramble mode rn from rambling to my friend about certain beans being disaster bi's and a disaster lesbian and silly shenanigans for certain au's
How have you been doing? If you're comfy sharing of course, feel free to ramble in turn if you'd like! No pressure tho! ^-^
But remember you deserve a nice confidence booster too :3

Famous Dart Matches in History: A Retrospective
Tumblr media
The game of darts might not immediately conjure up images of nail-biting suspense, but this precision sport has a rich history of thrilling matches that have kept fans on the edge of their seats. In this retrospective, we take a look back at some of the most famous dart matches that have left a lasting imprint on the sport's legacy.
1. Phil Taylor vs. Mike Gregory - 1992 Embassy World Championship
One of the all-time classics took place during the 1992 Embassy World Championship final when Phil Taylor faced Mike Gregory. The match is remembered for its incredible tension and for the extraordinary level of skill displayed. It boiled down to a sudden-death leg after both players were locked at six sets each and two legs each. Taylor, known as "The Power," ultimately clinched the title, earning his second world championship and setting the stage for a dominant career that would boast 16 world titles.
2. Raymond van Barneveld vs. Phil Taylor - 2007 PDC World Championship
Moving forward to the 2007 PDC World Championship, the final between Raymond van Barneveld and Phil Taylor is often cited as one of the greatest dart matches ever. van Barneveld, a Dutch titan of the game, squared off against English powerhouse Taylor in a gripping contest that went to the last possible leg. Barney's victory in a tie-breaker leg after being down 0-3 in sets showcased an incredible comeback and added another layer to their engrossing rivalry.
3. Adrian Lewis vs. Gary Anderson - 2011 PDC World Championship
Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson stunned spectators with their high-scoring and fast-paced showdown during the 2011 World Championship. Both known for their power scoring and quick play, this match was a feast for the fans. Lewis came out victorious with a 7-5 win in sets, but the match is best remembered for the first nine-dart finish in a PDC World Championship final by Lewis himself, which set the Alexandra Palace alight.
4. Michael van Gerwen vs. Peter Wright - 2017 Premier League
Fast forward to 2017, the Premier League match between Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright was a standout moment in darts history. Van Gerwen, a darting phenomenon from the Netherlands, went head-to-head with the colorful and charismatic Scotsman, Peter Wright. In a breathtaking performance, van Gerwen averaged an astounding 123.40 – the highest televised average in the history of the sport at the time. Despite Wright's strong performance, "Mighty Mike" was unbeatable that night, signalling his era of dominance.
5. Rob Cross vs. Michael van Gerwen - 2018 PDC World Championship Semi-Final
Rob Cross, a newcomer to the professional scene, made waves with his incredible run at the 2018 World Championship. His semi-final match with Michael van Gerwen, the reigning world number one, was a heart-stopping affair. With both players showcasing their best darts, the match went to a deciding set. Cross emerged victorious in a sudden-death leg, subsequently going on to win the tournament in what was a fairytale debut season.
Each of these matches not only exemplified darts as a sport of precision and nerves but also captivated audiences and inspired countless players. They're etched into the fabric of darts history for their drama, the exceptional levels of play they featured, and for the way they encapsulated the sheer excitement that professional darts can provide.

DARTS!!!
Tumblr media
Last summer my journey began.
Having watched a couple of PDC tournaments on TV, I decided that now was the time for me to become a champion.
I went to Brøndby (of all places) to buy myself the official new dart board from Winmau, and 3 professional darts.
When I was a teenager, I played darts for fun at home. I really loved it, and I wanted to invite that life joy into my life again.
Got everything transported back to Copenhagen on bike - let's just say, that a dart board is a lot bigger than you think, and got it pretty easily installed due to a new innovative design from Winmau, which made the whole process trouble free.
My ultimate goal is still to become a world champion! It won't be tomorrow and not next year - but it will happen.
Starting out I didn't play any tournaments, I just practised at least 2 hours a day. Got familiar with the board and the darts, which are a total upgrade from what I used as a teenager.
I played 501 - and I still do. This is for ME the best way to practise my skills and be able to daily monitor my improvements.
After 1/2 year of daily 2 hour sessions, I invested in a Scolia system. Now I can play with other darters online, I can compete in live tournaments, and I have a total statistical overview of all dartboard actions.
I use a 3 dart average to follow my level, and starting out my level was at an average of 20-25, which is total amateur level.
Here 1 year later my 3 dart average in 888 matches against the Scolia computer bot is 40-43, which is getting closer and closer to 50, which is the dart average for an experienced player.
What is important for a darter to remember, is, that your average will on a daily basis go up and down - up and down. This can be really frustrating, and believe me, I have been in a gridlock for some time now - resting at an 3 dart average of 35-37.
Last week I finally broke into the 40´s, and I'm slowly getting comfortable to stay In the 40´s on my way to the 50´s.
Hitting 2 180´s during this last week, the future looks promising. 2 180´s out of a total in 1 year of 4.
Like table tennis, I will never grow tired of playing darts. I even listen to e-books now, while I play, and I also practise in loud environments, since tournaments on the PDC tour are being played in front of a rowdy crowd.
On towards a 50 3 dart average and beyond!!!

With a surge of refugee claimants overwhelming some shelters across Ottawa, city staff working in physical distancing centres (PDCs) have secured permanent housing for 375 people since 2020.
Still, rising numbers seeking shelters have offset any progress.
Two of the eleven PDCs that have opened since 2020 remain – the Dempsey Community Centre in Alta Vista and Bernard Grandmaitre Arena in Vanier.
However, the remaining centres have been maintained for reasons other than what they were initially intended for, according to Marty Carr, Ottawa city councillor for Alta Vista.
Coun. Carr told The Sam Laprade Show on Monday, Aug. 21, that physical distancing centres were designed during the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce crowding within the shelter system; however, an estimated 50 per cent of those seeking shelter in pandemic-era community centres are newcomers.
Newcomers to Canada are discovering there’s nowhere for them to stay, and they now account for at least half of the population in those community centres.
“We’re taking a couple of steps forward but taking far more back because of the influx of newcomers arriving with no other place to stay,” she explained.
Refugee claimants have few other options, as local shelters, including the Ottawa Mission operating at overcapacity.
While physical distancing centres serve singles only, a system of family shelters is offered as well, where newcomers are offered temporary housing in hotels and motels.
As Canada plans to ramp up immigration by 65 per cent – in a jump from around 300,000 to 500,000 immigrants per year – some question whether we have the infrastructure to support this intake.
And yet, nearly 60,000 applications from asylum seekers have been processed as of June, marking the highest mid-year count, dating back to at least 2015.
“Ottawa has been looking for solutions; they’ve examined over 160 public listings for office space, 53 industrial spaces, and inquired with community partners, including school boards, provincial and federal governments,” she explained.
But the councillor said they need to identify places to house newcomers aside from community centres.
“We’re at a point where we need to look at the city helping non-profits to acquire properties,” added Carr.
The councillor goes on to say securing more funding is the first step in improving our local shelter system. She’s calling on more support from all levels of government and emphasizes an increase in federal-level funding.
While the federal government provides funding through the Interim Housing Assistance Program (IHAP), Carr explained it’s insufficient in facing overflowing shelters and an affordable housing crisis.
“They (federal government) have an immigration and refugee policy that’s inconsistent with their housing policy, and that’s a big challenge,” Carr pointed out.
To date, the City has received $26.1 million in IHAP funding for costs incurred between 2017 and 2022. As of Monday, Aug. 21, the federal government said that they have recently received a request from the City of Ottawa for funding of 2023 costs under the extension of IHAP.
Director of housing services with the City of Ottawa, Paul Lavigne told CityNews Ottawa that staff has “submitted a preliminary funding request of $13.6 million from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada under the extension of the Interim Housing Assistance Program (IHAP),” and that their funding request is “based on estimated costs that will be incurred by the municipality in 2023 for the provision services to asylum claimants as they relate to interim housing.”
During a community services committee meeting in June, a transition plan was announced that would move residents out of PDCs. According to Carr, the city relied on an increased rental housing allowance and considered leasing a private-market facility to cope with the winter rush into shelters.
But with unprecedented numbers relying on shelter services, city staff now question whether funding will be sufficient as they face new challenges.
“A lot of the burden is falling on the voluntary sector, with food banks experiencing the highest usage they’ve ever seen, and that’s driven a lot by the newcomer population,” said Carr.
Since 2017, the Ottawa Food Bank said they’ve seen a 39 per cent increase in demand, serving more people than at any other time in its 38-year history.
This past February, city staff said both shelters would remain open until mid-August, with a plan to transition away from PDCs as soon as possible. But given the crisis Ottawa shelters are now facing, there’s no word on when this transition will happen.
Carr explained while shelters can’t keep up with this influx in demand, she reassures residents and newcomers that the city is working efficiently to improve our shelter system.
“We have a city council that’s dedicated to ensuring we find solutions,” said Carr. “You’ll hear more to come over the next few months.”
