Opinion: Is the Avonworth Community scared of change?

I graduated from High School in 2012. I went to a small high school in the suburbs in Pittsburgh known as Avonworth. Now if we look back to the years I was in high school a lot of Alums who are older than I am, my age, or slightly younger will probably all agree that Avonworth lacked in diversity and change was needed. We all thought change was needed and diversity needed to be expanded to support minority students. The school was known to not have done anything about racism, homophobia, biphobia, or even transphobia. Fast Forward to now. The Avonworth School Board has unanimously approved a Gender and Sexuality alliance (GSA) club when the proposal concerned some parents and community members, and according to the Avonnew’s (the school paper) online news paper there is artwork that has LGBTQ+ themes that has led into controversy. Which leads me to ask this question. Is the Avonworth Community scared of changes? Here is my answer. I honestly really think there are some Avonworth community members and parents scared of the progressive change Avonworth has made. After reading the citizen article from April 9th and seeing the comments of outrage by some parents over the GSA my mind went "their outrage of an innocent club but where was their outrage when they got rid of the indoor drumline? where was the outrage when they tried to cut band? Where was the outrage when a senior at the school was accused of rape? Where was the outrage about the volunteer band instructor having been arrested for rape of a minor? Where was the outrage that a student who was suspended for having alcohol on the property was still allowed to participate in Indoor drumline? or Where was the outrage when the school got rid of a beloved elementary school principle? Yet you worried about a the school supporting LGBTQ+ students?" Seriously I really think there are current Avonworth parents and community members who are scared of change and progressive action being done at the school district. We have been saying since I was a student at Avonworth that we needed changes and that the diversity because we lacked in that department. I gave Avonworth a 1 star rating in 2015 because of the lack in diversity and I said they needed to be more open minded to LGBTQ+ people and there were parents that liked what I said. Now I changed that rating to a 3 star because while Avonworth still has a long way to go but they have now started to progress after the GSA was approved and one parent was angry at what I wrote and said that the club was shameful and that students should not be exposed to LGBTQ+. Now there maybe a small minority group of students who are scared of this change and in my opinion I think that is because of their parents because studies do show that a lot of the stuff we are fed into our minds do come from our family members and that can range from religious views to political views. Changes are made not only with in society itself but also in the school system. When the superintendent at the time retired parents were actually happy that she stepped down and that the position was being taken over by the former Middle School Principle and that was because under her administration the school kept making cuts to certain programs. Now all of a sudden we got a small group of parents and community members complaining about an innocent club being approved and making statements about them not wanting their tax dollars go to a club like the GSA. I was probably one of the few out LGBTQ+ students at my school and I can assure you that where the school stands now on diversity and inclusion based on what I have seen at past board meetings and reading the school’s online news paper it has definitely got a lot better and is definitely a lot more open minded with in the student body and administration as it use to be. When I was at that school board meeting to speak in support of the students starting the GSA club after the meeting current students and the new school principle shook my hand thanking me for helping them push for this club and thanking me for sharing past experiences from when I was a teenager and I graduated nearly 5 years ago from the school. Now that the Avonworth School District has started to progress in diversity and support to LGBTQ+ student, it is now time to change the attitudes of the community and how we do that is by doing a community wide diversity training and safe zone training that educates people on different topics such as race, LGBTQ+, and religion and how to make the community more welcoming to minority groups and be more open to diversity instead of being tight nit and exclusive.
