First, I apologize to all renters, but mostly those in New York City. This is the story of a beautiful Bavarian fairytale town, the world’s oldest housing complex, where the rent is still less than a $1 yr.  Almost everything is the same as it was when it opened 500 years ago, including the annual rent. Welcome to “the Fuggerei.”
Tumblr media
Located in the city of Augsburg, Germany, residents of the Fuggerei pay next to nothing for a lovely home. So, what’s the catch?  In exchange for an annual rent of 88 cents, you must be an Augsburg resident for at least 2 years, be struggling to make ends meet, yet be debt-free, and prove your Catholic faith.
Tumblr media
Residents are also required to pray 3 times a day and do some part-time volunteer work in the community, such as gardening, to keep the place nice.
Tumblr media
The gates to this walled enclave close at 10pm every night, so if you want to step out after a hard day’s praying, no problem- just give the nightguard a small tip, and a swig of whatever you’re drinking.
Tumblr media
The rules may seem old fashioned, but that’s because they’re so old.
Tumblr media
Compared to the paperwork, credit checks and hoops you have to jump through to get a landlord to accept your earnings in return for a dingy little apt. in some cities, this is a breeze.
Tumblr media
So what’s the story behind this 16th century subsidized housing community that lives on its own terms? For some context into it, let’s meet the Fuggers.
Tumblr media
Jakob Fugger, aka Jakob the Rich, a banker, opened his purse, to those in need.
Tumblr media
The Fugger family was a dynasty of German bankers, nobility and merchants, who controlled much of the European economy in the 16th century and owned   land in and around Augsburg.
Tumblr media
Devout Catholic Jakob the Rich had a social conscience. He founded and donated the Fuggerei to the city in 1521, on the condition that he would make the rules, and it would stay that way forever. By 1523, 52 houses had been built with a church, squares, fountains and more streets on the way.
Tumblr media
The Fugger empire crumbled over the next 150 years, but luckily for Augsburg’s needy, the legacy lives on.
Tumblr media
Even after WWII bombings heavily damaged Augsburg and the Fuggerei, it was rebuilt to its original style and even expanded to 67 houses with 147 apartments.
Tumblr media
The Fuggerei was a stress-free safe haven for many war widows and struggling tradespeople to set up home and even shop on the grounds.
Tumblr media
Today, all houses and apartments are occupied except one, that serves as a museum, reminding visitors of the importance of dignified and affordable social housing.
Tumblr media
All profit from the museum goes back into maintaining the community.
Tumblr media
The entrance fee is 6.50 €, which is over 7 times the yearly rent, and visitors have their own entry gate, for minimal disruption.
Tumblr media
Of course, it has a long waiting list, with enquiries from folks far and wide who want to get in on the free weekly communal breakfasts. You could end up waiting up to 7 years to make it through the gates of this German fairytale town. (Actually, you wait longer here, for some apts.)
Tumblr media
Except for a portrait of Jakob Fugger which hangs in all 147 apartments, the homes come unfurnished so residents can put their own stamp on the place.
Tumblr media
Each identical apartment has an elaborate doorbell, uniquely shaped so residents could feel their way and identify their door in the dark, before the installation of streetlights. I guess social housing doesn’t have to be a broken system.

14 August 1997 - the waning days in Germany for 1997 - the EC Maurice Ravel - last two nights in Paris 11e.
Thursday 14 August 1997
Guten Tag!   Today would be my last day at the job, and I would have to turn in my identification.  Also I had to make sure that I took care of my accomodations for 17th to 19th August before I left for the USA, New York and San Francisco.  Also the big radio and coffee maker would have to be sold.
I had to go to work for the final day, and towards the afternoon, I had to let my supervisor know, how many vacation days I took and at the security gate, I would have to leave my identification card.  My supervisor said he would issue a letter on my performance over the summer.  He gave me a preview that it would be a decent review, as if I were to receive a letter grade of "B", or something like 83, for those who use numerical grades.
For the 17th to the 19th, I had to prepay my first night at the Auberge Internationale des Jeunes so that I could request a second one.  The request was done by fax.  The night charge was 110 FF, about 35 D-Mark per night, and the rest could be paid in cash.  I was set for the 17th to 19th for accomodations.
Once I left work, I went to the store to buy some food for supper.  Then I went home the usual way.  One of my roommates had to return to Ulm the following day, so that would be my only time to say goodbye.  We also settled on a price for the radio.  He gave about 80 Mark for it, and about 20 Mark because it was a Siemens brand.  Not a bad trade.
Friday the 15th August was a legal holiday.  Work was closed, so I could not work that day.  Instead, I went to see the Schloss Nymphenburg.  It was in the northwest of the city.  To go there, requires a bus to Silberhornstraße and the U Bahn to Hohenzollernplatz and then a tram to Romanplatz and another to the Schloß Nymphenburg castle.  Back then I did not go inside it unlike Wednesday 21st July 2021 when I actually did.  To see the castle, would require walking maybe a few hundred meters along a street with a canal in the middle.  Then there are some large ponds to pass by and then you can see the castle.  It was a nice castle, consisting of the main palace, and two wings.  I should have taken time to pay for entry to the back garden.  In 2021 when I visited, it was very nice, something like a small version of the garden at Versaille Palace near Paris.
I also bought a train ticket for Sunday 17th August 1997, namely the "Maurice Ravel" train from Munich to Paris Gare de l'Est.  I was in the second class compartment.
Saturday the 16th August, because the 15th was a holiday, the 16th August would have stores open until about 4 PM, so I took advantage of what I could.  I bought some groceries to eat, but not so much that I would have to leave anything behind.  I went home and packed up, and took my two large bags to Munich Hbf, and put them in a large locker.  They would be safe until the morning when I had to take the train to Paris Gare de L'Est.
I had a decent supper, nothing too filling and went to bed.  I had only my green backpack and basics for the night.
Sunday the 17th August, I took a shower, had a quick snack, and packed my green backpack for the last time.  I even had the bedspread that I brought along with me, put in the bag.  When I walked to the housing authority, I dropped my key off in the drop box.  Then I left for St. Quirin Platz on a bus to Silberhornstraße, the U2 to Hbf and I had fifteen minutes to find the locker with my other bags, and catch the Maurice Ravel train.  I found the second class compartment and boarded for the last time that year.
The train left München Hbf at 7:50 AM, and made an intermediate stop at München Pasing, before proceeding to Augsburg, Ulm Hbf, Stuttgart Hbf to change direction, Pforzheim, Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden, Kehl where I left Germany for the last time that year, crossing the Rhine into Strasbourg, then really picking up speed to Nancy and then Paris Gare de l'Est.  At Strasbourg, the train added some cars at the front and exchanged the DB locomotive for a SNCF locomotive.  I was not exactly in a very good position on the train, being in the second class compartment.
About 3 PM, the train had arrived at Paris Gare de l'Est.  I was towards the rear of the train and had a long walk to the lobby.  Trolleys were in short supply.  I did not have much French money and could not yet buy anything from the vending machine, until I exchanged some D-Mark for Franc.  I managed to buy a one-day Mobilis carte orange day pass for zones 1 to 2.  I would be able to take the metro line 5 to République and transfer to the line 8 for Ledru Rollin, so that I could avoid changing at Bastille which was a terrible station to transfer at, with luggage.
I arrived at the Auberge Internationale des Jeunes at Rue Trousseau 10 in the 11th arrondissement around 4:30 PM.  I let them know that I sent a fax and had confirmation of paying the first night, and paid a further 110 Francs for the second night.  They said my room was ready and I could place my luggage on the free bed.  I was on the third (second for those not from the USA) floor, so it took a bit of time to go upstairs.  There was no elevator at all.
After leaving my bags on the upper bunk, I went out to explore the Bastille area more or less.  I took the metro and RER to Luxembourg park.  I walked around that park for about fifteen minutes.  I also took the metro line 8 to Daumesnil and transferred to a line 6 and I took a photo of the entrance to the Picpus metro station before returning.  I am not sure what else I did that night.
Tomorrow would be my last full day in Europe for 1997.  Please join me when I visit the Eiffel Tower grounds, La Défense by M1 as opposed to by the RER, Galleries Lafayette and try and fail to find the Stravinsky fountain near the Centre Georges Pompidou (how could that actually happen??????).  See you then.

Russia Is Making Heaps of Money From Oil, but There Is a Way to Stop That
“The United States and its allies are leaning heavily on economic sanctions to punish Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. But a key element in that strategy, restrictions on Russian oil exports, mostly appears to be causing pain for ordinary people in other countries. European nations, in particular, are causing considerable damage to their own economies without reducing Russia’s oil revenue. Nations seeking to help Ukraine are aiming at the wrong target. They have focused on reducing Russia’s energy exports instead of reducing Russia’s earnings from energy exports. Russia is exporting less oil but, in a perverse twist, it is earning more money, according to the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air, based in Finland. The sanctions have raised prices, more than offsetting the decline in exports. In May 2022, Russia earned 883 million euros per day from oil exports, up from 633 million euros per day in May 2021. ...”

With England and Belgium within their group, two groups that boast of experience and skill, it should be difficult for Panama, who have a Colombian supervisor Hernan Dario Gomez, to achieve the Round of 16. But that knows, if Iceland could knock-out England, why can’t Panama? The final day's the team stage saw Colombia beat Senegal 1-0 to top Group H while Japan destroyed to Poland 1-0 but nevertheless been able to proceed through to a higher round on reasonable play. Senegal had just needed a point in their last Group H game to attain the second round, but beat saw them pass up to Japan, just who edged them for the runners-up place by virtue of having a far better disciplinary record. Poland vs Senegal - 08.30 p.m. Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia - 08.30 p.m. Egypt vs Uruguay - 5.30 p.m. Costa Rica vs Serbia - 5.30 p.m. Switzerland vs Serbia - 11:30 p.m. Panama vs Tunisia - 11:30 p.m. Argentina vs Croatia - 11:30 p.m. And even though 2014 finalists Argentina are favourites going ahead, Iceland will count on their qualifying performance to make the second area ahead of Croatia and Nigeria. France vs Argentina - 7.30 p.m. Sweden vs Switzerland - 7.30 p.m. Peru vs Denmark - 9.30 p.m. France vs Peru - 08:30 p.m. Nigeria vs Iceland - 08:30 p.m. Iceland have now been positioned in perhaps the toughest team heading to Russia - Group D - with Argentina, Croatia and Nigeria. Croatia vs Nigeria - 12.30 a.m. Russia vs Croatia - 11.30 p.m. Finishing ahead of Croatia and Ukraine to be eligible for the planet Cup proved features that Euro 2016 was not a one-time success tale.

Meeting at the Infinity Line
premise: 1921. Edward Elric has only been in Munich for a month when his father Hohenheim disappears… leaving Edward with only instructions to find his own housing. Strapped for cash and still meandering in mind and spirit, he resigns himself to an irregular schedule by renting a flat as a day tenant. At the same time, Alfons Heiderich moves from Augsburg to Munich and rents the same flat as the night tenant, a holdover until he can find longer-term housing when he returns from Romania. In this liminal time frame, without meeting each other in person, the two young men learn about each other like true scientists — through observation and hypothesis.
written for the Equivalent Exchange Anthology and featured in print project 1! pre-orders end on October 3rd, 2021: order your copy here! (see below the cut for image descriptions and citations)
notes:
A. in projective geometry, two parallel lines intersect at the line at infinity (also called the 'ideal line') - ha, ha
B. I borrowed the premise of this story from my favorite live-action series, Babylon Berlin
C. this was very fun to write and I look forward to sharing the story!
D. the timespan of the images in this preview post is somewhat wide; I hope you'll accept this!
image text - story excerpts:
1. Alfons’s dream is to design a machine that will travel into space. For now—good luck, he wishes, as he drops the envelopes into the post box and then taps the brim of his cap in greeting [...] —he hopes that one of these will make its way back to him with positive news.
2. For years, Edward had been in constant motion—they had, he and Al. It’s hard not to slip into a strange inertia without him. [ … ] He sighs and stands, with a creak from Hohenheim’s prototype limbs. The dexterity is awful; it’s no Rockbell work. Alchemists should stick to alchemy, mechanics to mechanics; each to their respective craft.
Then again, even Edward is trying to dabble outside of his usual sciences. Einstein, Oberth, he’ll see who’ll come out for the better—and come out on the other side.
3. [ Edward ] drops inelegantly onto the bed, only to bolt upright, with a hiss of pain, twisting around to find whatever jabbed sharply and unexpectedly into his back.
A book?
Hardcover, looking like it’s traveled its fair share: a collection of fictional stories. Edward leafs through the pages, unimpressed and irritatedly rubbing at the sore spot that H.G. Wells—evidently—dug into his spine with its own. [ … ] Edward’s eyes are drawn to a particular passage, underlined in careful pencil:
‘Face this world. Learn its ways, watch it, be careful of too hasty guesses at its meaning. In the end you will find clues to it all.’
4. Fairy tales? But then Alfons looks further: red, yellow, blue script in Latin that confounds his schoolboy proficiency, save for some—Sulphur, Aqua—inscribed above kettle-shaped glass flasks, which house small colorful spheres or even smaller humanoid figures. He flips the page. A translation in English, which he scans until:
‘Convert the natures of the Elements and thou shalt find what thou seekest.’
He snaps the book shut. Who is the person occupying this same space during the daytime? Is it a historian who sleeps in his bed? Perhaps an artist, a novelist? An occultist? Or a Time Traveler, Alfons chuckles, somewhat sheepish at the absurdity of that last supposition. Think more rationally, like a scientist or an engineer.
