Men still live who, in their youth, remember pigeons; trees still live who, in their youth, were shaken by a living wind. But a few decades hence only the oldest oaks will remember, and at long last only the hills will know.

If anyone is interested in conservation efforts for birds, I highly recommend these websites.
The Audubon society is a conservation charity that focuses solely on birds. WWF is a charity that focuses on all types of wildlife, but I included them because they also help multiple species of birds worldwide. For those of you who don't know how this works when you donate to World Wildlife Fund or Audubon you have the option of "adopting" an animal in the process. This is a symbolic adoption where you receive a free gift and a certificate of adoption with a picture of the animal.

so i’m like mostly sure this little guy is fine now but i’m not a bird expert
pretty sure he’s a fledgling mockingbird (we’re in florida), little dude came up to my mom while she was resting in the garage and called me out for help. i’m preeeeetty sure he hit his head because he was just standing there, barely reacted to us, and to be sure i gently poked him with the end of a bottle to see if he’d react then (he didn’t)
we stayed out there until he started moving again, chirped, and then eventually hopped off, which is what i was hoping for. My mom also tell me that she’s seeing the adult mockingbirds that live here nearby
so again, i’m pretty damn sure he’s okay and we don’t need to interfere, but just in case, can anyone with any sort of expertise give their two cents?

My preference is always to see critters in their natural habitat, but the reality is that there are millions of bugs I'll never have a chance to encounter in the wild, so seeing some of them so beautifully presented at New Orleans' insectarium was kind of a dream come true! 🦋 🕷 🐞 🐝 🐜 #neworleans #audobon #audobonsociety #insectarium #audoboninsectarium #visitneworleans #nola #visitnola #bucketlist #roadtrip #usa #travel #instatravel #travelgram #bugnerd #bucketlist #louisiana #butterflygarden #frenchquarter #nolalove #beetles #butterflies #moths #bugs #insects #art #bugcollection #lepidoptera #coleoptera (at Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium) https://www.instagram.com/p/BXQkuFJFZ-Z/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Killdeer Patrol, June 17, 2023.
Our list of badges increases. We just were unexpected elevated to Killdeer Patrol. On a little walk, we saw a mama and daddy Killdeer. They were acting rather strange, and we saw to our left three little poofs—babies! But in the moment we saw them, a car rushed by, and one didn’t make it.
Or so we thought!
All three babies survived the car passing, but a very tall curb now separated them from mama and daddy. We felt badges pinned to our chest and we stepped into action to help all three babies avoid more cars, dangerous storm drains, and successfully reunite with mama and daddy safely away from all the dangers.
So glad we were in the right place at the right time, and our “Killdeer Patrol” badges looks pretty good next to our “Spring Peeper Patrol” ones.

Every spring and fall, billions of birds migrate through the US, the majority of them flying at night, navigating with the night sky. This mass movement of birds must contend with a dramatically increasing but still largely unrecognized threat: light pollution. An estimated one billion birds are killed annually from direct collisions with illuminated buildings, towers, and other structures across the country.
Light pollution harms birds, but you can help by:
Turning off spot lights and/or decorative lighting
Turning off interior lights when leaving a room or drawing blinds/shades
Using down-shielded lighting outdoors
Adding timers and/or motion sensors to outdoor lighting, where possible
Pledge to stand with Audubon as we call on building owners, managers, and homeowners to turn off excess lighting during the months of bird migration to help ensure birds have a safe passage between their nesting and wintering grounds.

How come I never see Bluebirds in St. Pete? Does anyone see them on the Pinellas Peninsula? Sometimes it does feel like we live on an island here, doesn't it. As soon as you cross over the bay to Tampa suddenly you see cattle egrets, sandhill cranes, and probably tons of bluebirds. This one I discovered in St. Augustine the other day. #floridabirds #roamflorida #floridaexplored #birdnerd #birdphotography #audobonsociety #happierplace #women_wildlife_photography #birds_adored (at St Augustines) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoX_X4svn-J/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
